From the Author
Hey guys! Thanks for reading my crazy little superhero tale about an addict with super powers. I wanted to take a moment and talk about all the drugs in this book. As a recovering addict myself, I think I am in a unique position to bring a realism to Carter and this story in general that most authors would simply not be able to. I've got over six years sober and going strong.
Recovery is no joke and my intention with this book was not to make light of the subject. Heroin abuse nearly ruined my life, but I was able to bounce back with a strong support system and lots of therapy. So please don't think I'm making fun of NA or AA or any of the great organizations out there that help recovering addicts. My intention was to write a story about what its like for a real recovering addict. All the normal human emotions you see Carter go through are real life emotions I have personally felt. I really poured my heart and soul into this book. I'm pretty sure that's what all authors do, but this book was almost like therapy for me. If you're an addict or a recovering addict or have been affected by an addict, know that it/you/they can get better.
That's it. I just wanted to say a little something before I go and thank you for giving Users Book 1: A Suphero Novel a chance.

About the Author
Stacy and Jennifer Buck are a husband and wife writing duo born and raised in Seattle WA. Having known each other since they were sixteen years old makes their writing together a rich experience not only themselves, but also for their readers. Shortly after marrying they began writing Squanto Undead, an alternate history serial novel based on the mysterious historical figure. Stacy has been an archer and outdoorsmen all his life and brings that realism to the character. Also be sure to check out our other series of books like Clockwork Wings: the Chronicles of Icarus. Clockwork Wings is a steampunk meets Greek Mythology series about Icarus and the Greek myths. Or try our superhero drug addiction series Users Book 1: A Superhero Novel (My Angels Have Demons) available now. While it seems that Stacy and Jenn jump from genre to genre, (Horror, Steampunk, Superhero) you will always find that their stories have an underlying theme of action and adventure regardless of genre. Stacy and Jenn live and work together along with their five kids, two cats, and dog in a suburb just outside Seattle.

love this series.
By L. Hayes
First I think book #2 is even better then book #1. I really love the concept if these books and you actually can walk away with something useful if you have anyone in your life who is currently using drugs or is a recovering addict. If you've read what Stacy wrote about author under this books description then you read this book or you've read it .you will totally understand and realize that what he us writing came from experience. You can feel in reading the book that it's coming from someone who knows about addiction. Also i think if you are recovering this book coukd be helpful. You'll read the bad and the good. From when Carter was a user to a recovering addict and also other addicts going through much of the same things in this book. Plus who doesn't want to be a super hero right? In recovery you try to find something to take your time make you feel better, take time you feel is idol, weak time i call it, and replace it with something. Carter replaces his fighting baddies out there. In this book I think you really get to know all the characters a lot better. Carter who's had a really rough life as a user of drugs and also a User with his powers ,as they are called in the books ,is finally getting ahead in life. He's taken on the job as a sponsor, he's trying to repair relationships, become better. Then his sponsee Barber turns around really quick what he thinks he's doing right into wrong making him realize he has real responsibilities. I'm not going to give you Ll these spoilers so you won't need to read the book. I'm just going to end this saying. I think this book is great! I think everyone should read it and maybe besides getting a good read, get a little education on the subject of an addict. Even though it's turned into a super hero type almost comic book like story it's very powerful.
Worth reading , I highly recommend and it's really worth the 5 stars I gave it.

I was given this book by the author for a honest 're view.

A Bang for the Bucks!
By Brenda Evans
Stacy and Jennifer Buck have another winner here. It doesn't matter if you are a superhero fan, or an addict, to enjoy reading this trilogy. The main character, Carter is made believable because we follow his journey to stay clean against what for some would be unsurmountable odds. The reader gets to watch him develop from a somewhat selfish, self-sufficient and arrogant recovering addict, to a reluctant caring and dependable leader. I enjoyed the psychological aspects of the books as much as the writing style. The Buck duo write in a style that is full of action and just enough descriptive lines to give you a sense of time and place. The dialogue is believable and Carter's thoughts lend a unique perspective to what an addict feels and faces daily. In spite of the heavy undertones, the reading is fast and enjoyable. I have book III on pre-order.

kept me reading
By JohnRinggold
Pretty good book. Many of the reviews thought this book was better than the first. It was good, with more action, villains, and battles, but I liked Carter more being the man of mystery and darkness before he shows his vulnerabile and emotional side.

Shake, Rattle & Roll!!
By Kindle Customer
Hildra's been shot by Sheridan, the traitor! The freedom fighters are in dire straits! Sheridan stole The Device!
The original band of resisters (Avery, Layanna, Janx and Hildra), must again, rely on themselves and their wit to save the planet. As they race after Sheridan, in the ancient subway car, Avery ignores the shaking/rattling car; he strives to save Hildra who's lost so much blood and her lung's been hit! Can he save her?
There's tension, anger and guilt between Avery and Janx because of Sheridan; and tension, attraction and repulsion between Avery and Layanna due to the sacrifices made! Come on people! You've got work to do! Get yourselves under control and DO it! Much is happening during and after the subway chase! So many harrowing events occur along the way. My heart was racing as my hands continually turned pages! Thank you for the inspiring and thrilling portrayal, Mr. Conner! Ready for Part five!

I received this book free for an honest review!

Action, intrigue & don't forget the cute monkey!
By Jules
the atomic sea book 4
Omg! I like this series! So much action, so much adventure, so much drama, and so much intrigue. It never stops. You'd think by four books the war would be over by now but nope, not in mr. conner's world; he just keeps coming up with more and more trouble for our heroines to get into, and most of it seems plausible. :) I'm glad the series continues because I always hate to see characters and a storyline I like so much come to an end. So take heart...there's at least a book 5, yay. Can't wait!--& don't know when that will be. The one thing I'm worried about at the end of this book... I'm hoping they don't forget Hildegard! The one comment I will make about this book's writing styles and my preference is this: I prefer when their are conversations and scenes that occur between multiple characters, rather than always between the main character and 1 or more characters. I think it adds depth when there's conversations happening between others that don't include the main character. It's more rounded. I think. In this book, it's always between Doc/Francis and another character or a group conversation including him, that's what I mean. Again, just a note about the style used here.
Really good Syfy book series. Well edited. Age group: probably 17+ due to the violence and in-humane actions. The title and covers are a quandary: I prefer books in a series to at least have their own subtitle; even Star Wars had subtitles. Also the covers, although the graphics are just a bit different (thank you, that's a must), I think they need more differentiation; I think the author could utilize color in subtle or bold ways to help each title stand out from the other. If the author has trouble coming up with titles then maybe he could run contests on his site for ideas or ask his beta readers. If he has them. ;)

Resonator: New Lovecraftian Tales From Beyond, by Howard P Lovecraft

"With five feeble senses we pretend to comprehend the boundlessly complex cosmos, yet other beings with a wider, stronger, or different range of senses might not only see very differently the things we see, but might see and study whole worlds of matter, energy, and life which lie close at hand ... I have always believed that such strange, inaccessible worlds exist at our very elbows, and now I believe I have found a way to break down the barriers!" - H. P. Lovecraft, From Beyond (1920) [dramatically, to camera] "It ate him ... bit off his head ... like a gingerbread man!" - Jeffrey Combs as 'Crawford Tillinghast' in Stuart Gordon's FROM BEYOND (1986) In his classic story "From Beyond", Howard Phillips Lovecraft introduced the Tillinghast Resonator: a monstrous device that stimulates dormant senses in man, opens up unseen worlds to unsuspecting eyes, and calls through terror and ecstasy from a realm far beyond our mundane perceptions. In 'RESONATOR: New Lovecraftian Tales From Beyond', you'll meet the men and women who dare to pull the switch, for profit, pleasure, and ultimately, peril! Thrill to the creatures (both mindless and horribly sentient) that are revealed in wave after wave of uncanny radiation! Turn on the juice, brace your pineal gland for some unprecedented growth, and get ready to go BEYOND! Editor Scott R Jones brings you stories from some of the best writers working in Weird Fiction today (Cody Goodfellow, Scott Nicolay, Christopher Slatsky, Christine Morgan, Richard Lee Byers, Orrin Grey, Anya Martin, and Edward Morris) as well as fresh new voices. With a cover featuring the psychedelic art of Nick 'The Hat' Gucker, 'RESONATOR: New Lovecraftian Tales From Beyond' is the anthology that will break down the barriers in 2015! This book is a creative exploration of form and content ...
By JR
This book is a creative exploration of form and content around the shared conceit of technology/sorcery and third-eye truth. Each author takes those primordial ideas and conjures up terrors both immediate and existential. In Resonator, merely getting eaten alive by unseen monsters from outside time and space is the least of your concerns, and one of the more noble fates the hapless characters end up suffering.

Some of my personal favorites include "IPO" by Darren Brightman, "Film Maudit" by Christopher Slatsky, and "The Wizard of OK" by Scott Nicolay.

This book comes with my strongest recommendation for fans of both science fiction-horror and body-horror.

A cut above the standard Lovecraft-inspired anthology
By Thomas J. Breen
"Resonator" is a joy for fans of horror, science fiction, and H.P. Lovecraft in particular, not least because the anthology manages to accomplish what increasingly seems like an impossible feat: finding something new to say about the themes explored by the old gent from Providence.

It certainly helps that editor Scott R. Jones has rounded up some of the most promising up-and-coming writers associated with the "New Weird" label. It's also to this anthology's advantage that instead of Cthulhu & Co., it looks to Lovecraft's relatively unexplored "From Beyond" for inspiration. In that story, included here, a mad inventor creates a machine that stimulates the pineal gland in a way that enables humans to see otherwise invisible things.

From this promising premise, the writers of "Resonator" explore everything from sex (Matthew M. Bartlett's funny, lubricious "Machine Will Start When You Are Start") to the military (Jones' own "Turbulence") to Wall Street (Darren Brightman's ingenuous "IPO") to Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground (Anya Martin's superb "Resonator Superstar!"). Two of the stories that will probably stick with me the longest are Christopher Slatsky's "Film Maudit," which recalls the best of Ramsey Campbell in its grim urban setting and shabby gorehound film festival milieu, and Scott Nicolay's "The Wizard of OK," which finds cosmic horror not in Elder Gods or the Necronomicon, but in the bad decisions and misspent lives we can't undo.

The quality of the writing is superb throughout - there's not a tiresome Lovecraft pastiche in the bunch. It's a collection that varies in tone from funny to bleakly depressing, and is all the better for it - "Resonator" suggests there's still life in HPL yet. Highly recommended.

(I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the wonderfully psyechedelic cover art by Nick Gucker - too many small presses seem to regard covers as an afterthought, and this is one more way in which Martian Migraine gets it right with "Resonator."

RESONATOR is one of the most fun anthologies I've read lately
By Mr. Anthrope
RESONATOR is one of the most fun anthologies I've read lately, Lovecraftian or non-. A lot of that has to with editor Scott R. Jones' decision to allow stories based on the film version of FROM BEYOND as well as the original Lovecraft story. If you have read the story and seen the film, you know that while they share a basic plot and theme, the results are vastly different. The film version is a crazypants masterpiece, filled with all the sex, gore, humor, and generally questionable taste that Lovecraft eschewed, and this really opens up possible story scenarios.

Cody Goodfellow and Matthew M. Bartlett, in particular, take the sexual implications of Crawford Tillinghast's curious device to disturbing and creative ends. Other favorites come from Christopher Slatsky, Christine Morgan, Orrin Grey, and the always reliable Scott Nicolay.

I have been getting really burned out on Lovecraftian anthologies - there are SO many of them, and like most anthos, the stories tend to be a mixed bag. There are usually a couple of stories I really enjoy, a couple that don't move me at all, and a majority that fall somewhere in between. RESONATOR hits my sweet spot, with all sixteen stories being at least Good and more often Very Good or Great, at least in my opinion.

In addition to the engrossing stories, the cover features knock-out art from Nick "The Hat" Gucker. This is a especially nice one, even for Nick, who has a solid portfolio of great horror and bizarro art.

There is really nothing not to like here unless you are a Lovecraft purist. Old Howard would undoubtedly be very uncomfortable with some of the content in this book, but that is one of the good things about it. Taking Lovecraft's central themes and then running far away from his world to do other things with them is much more interesting to me than reading yet another pseudo-pastiche of hoary tropes and unpronounceable names. This was a very enjoyable book, recommended for both open-minded Lovecraftians and general enthusiasts of modern weird horror.

A Beauty and the Beast with tentacles
By Berning pages
Be warned that there may be spoilers within my review. If you intend to read this novella and do not wish for spoilers please do not read my review.
If you are interested in this solely for the erotic possibilities then I would personally suggest bypassing it. It's there but it to me it was barely so.
The thing I loved most about this is that the style of writing doesn’t make me feel like I’m reading from the journal of a teenager bemoaning their dramatic life in high school (you have my deepest condolences if you understand what I mean by that) rather than a grown person.

The pacing and flow of the story are pretty good. Given that this is 30+ pages Mer manages to fit a good deal into it without overcrowding the story and thankfully does not drag things on with needless filler until the end of the book to give you a cliffhanger in hopes that you'll buy into the next part, but it is far from completed.
We are thrown right into the story and introduced to the characters via our narrator whose POV we will be experience this story through and get an idea of their personalities as well as a bit of back story.
Margret is unhappy with her marriage to a once charming husband who is careless with money and looking for that investment scheme that will make him rich or at least richer than his loaded wife. Margret informs the reader that he’s a cheating bastard and is trying to find out who his mistress is.
Then we have her friend who is along for the ride to look at a decaying lighthouse miles from land just before a storm for unclear reasons other than her “friendship” to Margret. It should not take anyone more than a second to put two and two together to figure out what’s going on. Sadly for Margret, who reveals all of this information onto us, that is not the case.
Margret’s character is rather likable, she doesn’t come off as a too stupid to live idiot, a naive pushover, the super independent ass kicker, or a complete brat. She’s normal, she has her dumb moments for lacking in foresight but given her situation I can actually find myself forgiving that.
The other characters are one dimensional and at times confusing. This works against the story when it comes to the ‘tentacle lord’ Corwin who barely knows our heroine given the short time they are together but wants her love, bringing to mind that this is Beauty and the Beast only the beast has tentacles and you don't really feel pity or anything for him other than curiosity. I could almost excuse it because of his isolation up to that point but it still comes suddenly, heavily, and overall desperate. Perhaps this is further explained and touched upon in later books but in this instances it’s just too soon.
My issues with this is that although I do like Mer’s style of writing there is indeed more tell than show and at times lacking in the telling in parts where I would need the details. Even the explanation of how he became what he is felt off handed even though we're suppose to read this coming from a person who doesn't even fully understand it himself. I had difficulty putting faces to the people and the surroundings, if not for the book’s cover I could not draw up a decent image for Margret. The only person who I would be able to give some details to is the mysterious Corwin and even those details feel a bit vague. I can understand if the intention was to give as little details as possible so that the reader might be able to project themselves and what they like into the story but it is still overall lacking for a person to fully immerse themselves. This really works against the very few erotic scenes that are present, you could mistakenly blink and skip a line and it's over. Which can be an overall downfall given this is listed as erotica.
It does leave much to be desired, some more details and polishing here and there and this works rather well because regardless I was still entertained and actually edger to see what would happen. For this it earns the 3 stars.

Another issue I find with this is that this book is practicing what many independent publishers are doing and that’s releasing small parts of a bigger book. It feels like we are reading an incomplete story and are merely being charged per chapter as it goes along and are told that we’re reading a ‘series’ or a ‘saga’. This is especially feels true with Mer’s work with every part that is on sale has the same cover art if only with a slight change in color and the same description. I am only grateful that they do not charge much for the other installments and may continue to read the rest if they are bundled together once the series end.

Overall it's flawed but it has potential as a free sample to get your hooked on the rest, and can be entertaining that is granted the other books improve.

Tentacle Lord
By book worm
This book was just ok in my opinion. It dragged on in the beginning and it was almost totally her telling a story. There was a little action but it could have been put together better. In short but it was boring. I won't be reading the other two books. I have two stars for effort.

A fun, exciting read!
By Charlene
There weren't any reviews when I bought this, but the description sounded interesting (and I liked the cover), so I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did! The book was a fun, exciting read, and I really hope the next installment in the series comes out soon.

Great beginning...can't wait for the next book!!!
By Donna Weiss
WOW!!! This is Tom Lewis' first book? WOW Tom, that was incredible!! I became so invested in the characters Paige, Drew and Trish. Paige is a survivor and a great character. I hope as the series continues we learn more about her.

This is an alien invasion, but it's more than that, it is about Paige and her struggle to survive. I feel that she has been introduced to us very well, but there is room for growth and I am looking forward to that in the next book in this series! She is a butt-kickin' heroine and If I were in an alien invasion I would definitely want Paige around.

I thought the world building was good, the alien city Tom created was awesome, although more detail would have been welcomed. The hybrids were interesting and learning a little about how they were made. I hope we get to learn more about the aliens, where they're from and exactly why they're there. But I do like how the focus is not on the aliens, but on human survival.

If you like a book that is action packed from beginning to end, this is it! If you like a strong-female lead, you'll love Paige! This should definitely be on everyone's to-read list!!

Great read!
By Just Us Books (M. silva)
do not have time to read so it will take me long to finish a book , but when I saw the cover of Aftermath I knew I had to read it! I am a sucker for aliens books and this was perfect!
The Good : It starts with action. The invasion happens at the beginning of the book. The heroine , Paige, is a very determined young lady risking her own life to safe her friend. The book does not slow down, it keeps getting better and better with each page turn, it is a very dark story, creepy sometimes. All the characters are very likable. I Loved the writing. I hope that in the next book we'll get to know more about the aliens.
I would recommend this book to everyone , especially to those fans of The Fifth Wave.

The bad : There was nothing bad about it. I really liked the entire book.

NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING SERIES. The seventh anthology of tales set in Eric Flint’s phenomenal Ring of Fire universe—all selected and edited by Flint.

A cosmic accident sets the modern West Virginia town of Grantville down in war-torn seventeenth century Europe. It will take all the gumption of the resourceful, freedom-loving up-timers to find a way to flourish in the mad and bloody beginning of the Renaissance. Are they up for it? You bet they are.

Edited by Eric Flint, and inspired by his now-legendary 1632, this is the fun stuff that fills in the pieces of the Ring of Fire political, social and cultural puzzle as supporting characters we meet in the novels get their own lives, loves and life-changing stories. The future and democracy have arrived with a bang.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Mostly mediocre...
By Rodger Raubach
I've been a staunch supporter of the 163X universe books from their inception, but this one is pretty uninspired w/r to the various stories contained herein. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Why do I make such a statement? The short stories are mostly unrelated to the main novels authored by Flint, and are mundane, to say the least. Too many new characters doing uninteresting things, and written in a tedious style. I'm not interested in crocheting, paving roads, doings of sodomites (their own nomenclature, not mine), and inept aviators.

Only the tales by David Carrico and Eric Flint were good.

Nice selection
By Heart O'Mine
Been following the series since the beginning & have enjoyed most. I do like the fact the printed Gazettes are now a selection of stories from ten
e-volumes instead of an exact copy of one e-book. And Flint's explanation as to why he got to/had to write two stories for this volume is priceless.

Persons complaining 'The short stories are mostly unrelated to the main novels authored by Flint', should be made aware of the rules by which those other than Flint must follow to write in his universe. One of which is stories cannot be written using main uptime characters unless the person writing them has officially 'claimed' them. Also, 'You can't create an uptimer, you have to use one who is in the Grid. You can't change the character's sex, year of birth, marital status, uptime education, uptime employment, or uptime religion.' Or they must be peripheral to a Gazette story and also have to be where they are/doing what is consistent with the 'canon' of the main novels.

The story quality is good and the writing very good
By KMacK
This is a compilation of various stories, some which one may have already been read and some that are new. The story quality is good and the writing very good.
This "Gazette" is a stroke of genius in that it lets you see the world of the 1630's from many viewpoints, just as if you were there and collecting stories from the people involved. Not all the characters are admirable; in fact some of them are classic "Good Ol' Boys" (clueless) who act and sound like people from a small town who've made good. By collecting these stories, the 1632 universe is deepened and broadened.
Eric Flint and Co. have a winner here!

Good Addition to the Series
By Wendell
Upon Fair Isle, the garnet-eyed, silver-haired, pale-skinned, twelve-fingered T’En have nearly become a thing of legend, as years of intermarriage have made the race of conquerors nearly identical to their human subjects. But even so, T’En blooded nobles still rule the land, and, occasionally, that blood will show, resulting in a pure blooded “throwback”, causing a disruption of the tranquility as the specter of the violent past rears its ugly head. Imoshen is one of these blessed (and cursed) individuals.

For most of her life, Imoshen’s family has sheltered her from the revulsion and novelty that her condition causes among the nobility, but as dutiful adherents of the laws, they have taught her that as a “throwback” she must devote her life to one of service, abandoning any selfish desires for a family of her own. (Throwbacks are forbidden to marry or sire offspring.) And until recently, Imoshen accepted her fate in silence, but then her path crossed the only male throwback upon Fair Isle.

To say Imoshen and Roethe have sexual chemistry when they meet would be too mild a term for it. For once they are together the magic inherit within them ignites, drawing one to the other. Each touch of the other’s hand is lightning; each kiss is ecstasy; and each caress is pure nerve-tingling erotica. Quickly, Imoshen and Roethe cast societal conventions aside, announcing their intentions to wed. A decision that the nobility find frightening and somewhat abhorrent. But before the two can begin their life together, the wrath of the gods falls upon Fair Isle.

To the north, across the narrow seas, the Ghebite Empire has been spreading across the continent like a plague, engulfing each kingdom it touched. The barbaric horsemen too mighty for even coalitions of nations to hold back. And now – unlooked for – these conquerors have landed upon Fair Isle, intent on destroying the soulless “dhamfeer” as their religion labels the magical T’En.

Armies are raised. Battles are fought. And Fair Isle begins to lose.

All too soon, Imoshen finds herself the last of her family, Roethe’s fate unknown, beset with the legions of the famous General Tulkhan, the son of the Ghebite King and a mighty conqueror. And while every instinct within the young T’En screams for her to bar the gates to her small city, rally the remaining people and fight, the ancient T’En known as the “Aayel” – and Imoshen’s mentor – counsels something different: surrender! Not only of the city itself but of Imoshen to Tulkhan’s carnal desires to bed a pure blooded T’En. The Aayel warns that only by such a sacrifice can Imoshen save herself and all of Fair Isle!

Pretty interesting story. At least, I thought it would be as I began, and overall, it delivered on that promise – with a few exceptions that is. But let’s start with the positives about The Fall of Fair Isle.

As followers of Rowena Cory Daniells’ T’En novels already know, there is a lot of history and legend in the series. Not the general retreaded Tolkien fantasy or even the older Arthurian type that many fantasy aficionados are accustom to but something fresh yet still familiar. And in Fall, Daniells doesn’t make the mistake of unveiling her world in huge info dumps but deftly allows it to be revealed slowly and consistently as the story progresses, so that by the end many of a reader’s questions about Fair Isle and its T’En inhabitants have been answered without them even realizing it.

But the strength of this novel is definitely the romantic love triangle. From the first chapter, the attraction, distrust, and political machinations between Imoshen and General Tulkhan are front and center. The constant shifting of the viewpoint from one to the other allowing a reader to experience each person’s feeling as their first violent meeting leads to an even more complex relationship later on. And while Roethe enters and exits the narrative quite frequently, his presence and pull on Imoshen’s emotions and decisions never totally ceases. So if romantic love triangles and all their wicked twists and turns is something that you adore, The Fall of Fair Isle will not disappoint.

For all its interesting and compelling qualities, Fall did not entertain me as much as I would have liked, however. Mainly, this was due to my preconceptions of the novel. Perhaps I’ve read too many traditional grimdark fantasy series, but whatever the reason, I went into this novel expecting a great deal of combat, warfare, and intense political upheaval in the vein of Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire and instead found myself presented with a novel very light on the violence and warfare and heavy on the romance and emotional turmoil of the characters. A turn of events that was not necessarily bad but which did not meet my needs of the moment.

So should you give this novel a try?

It really depends upon your favorite type of fantasy faire. If that is grimdark or the violent variety of fantasy on the shelves, then The Fall of Fair Isle might not have what you are looking for. But if romantic fantasy is something you enjoy, then I’d recommend you pick this novel up.

Complex and interesting, but missing just a little something
By Daisy
I really enjoyed this book. The characters felt very well put together and real. I liked the mythos, but I feel there could have been more mystery, especially revolving around the Ancients. It also bothered me just a teeny bit that there's a throw away line in the book about the possibility of a civilization on one of the moons, but the idea never went anywhere.

The romance aspect seemed to be the main focus of the plot, and boy was the resolution bitter sweet. I feel like the ending will stick with me for a very long time; however, as much as I loved the romance between Imoshen and Tulkhan, I really felt she and Reothe had much more chemistry, so just a little gripe on my part, I wish Daniells had given Tulkan and Imoshen's interactions a little more oomph. The upside is that Tulkhan didn't necessarily feel mismatched (just maybe a little less compatible than Imoshen and Reothe).

The plot was very up and down - many small climaxes and interludes. I would have liked for a stronger sense of suspense. The final climax felt a little, well... anticlimactic. I feel the final battle could have been more drawn out than it ultimately was. I feel that the love triangle was Daniells' main focus for the story, and that's fine. I personally enjoy a good love story, but this setting really needed more warfare and mythos. Seriously, for a fantasy, the fantasy aspect isn't quite up to snuff.

I give it a 4 out of 5 for these reasons. I loved this book and will read it again, but I think the whole thing only read at 90%, and Daniells needed to give it just a little more to get it the rest of the way there.

Wonderful!!!
By Vanessa Bushell
I love Rowena's work and the T'En. The Fall of Fair Isle wasn't as knuckle biting and heartbreaking as the Outcast Chronicles but it finished with hope and relief which I liked. This trilogy-in-on-book is incredibly well written and the characters are well drawn out. The themes are about fighting for the survival of their people, trust (... that theme was excruciating at times but very well done!) and where to put loyalties. On the trust note, after reading Brendan Sander's Mistborn Trilogy and now this one, I'm realizing the power of trust and the devastation it causes when we don't have it. If your interested read Mistborn and the Fall of Fair Isle and you'll see what I mean.

I've waited so long to read this book... thank you for reprinting it, it was wonderful xoxo

Utterly fantastic mix of SF and Fantasy! Wow!
By A Customer
Usually, most literature which tries to mix technology and magic doesn't work for me at all (e.g. the "Shadowrun" stuff), badly executed and stitched together. Not so this time. One of the all-time best books to read, this novel offers the inside view of a split-personality corporate assassin/sorceror in a future where powerful magic dwells between sophisticated ultratechnology and time-bending psionic powers. It artfully splices together the stuff of ancient legends and high-tech thriller. While certain ideas in this book are not entirely new, I would nevertheless rate it 6 stars, if I could, due to it's beautiful style, in-depth characterization, fast pace and intricately wrought background. I think this book is even better than "Signal to Noise", and just wish the very promising Mr. Nylund would produce more novels in this setting. Very highly recommended.

We need more like this...
By Greg Dufner
I thought A Game of Universe was a great book, and I'm certain my wife hated it. Every free moment I had I had my nose in the book. The author does a great job merging fantasy and science fiction. The two genres are blended wonderfully in this work, and it is easy to envision the world(s) in the novel. The action in the book was continuous, which is why it was so hard to put down. The last few pages where you get to find out about the great battle between good and evil and a third player wrap the book up splendedly. I highly recommend this book, but only pick it up if you have time to read it continuously!

With A Little Bit of Everything, Nylund's Work Continues to Shine!
By Mirage
A Game of Universe is the first work of Nylund's I've ever read. Having picked it up in FLorida on a whim several years ago, I've used my copy so much that it's literally worn out! This is the only book I've given out to several of my friends and co-workers (even my mother!) and every single one of them have loved it. All of us are now trying to hunt down a copy in better condition than mine!

Germain is a complex and hilarious character, with very real-to-life thoughts and actions. His various "personas" and his innner struggles have thrilled everyone I've known who has read this amazing work. The romance between Virgina and Germain was just enough to please the girl in me but not overly so so that I wanted to strangle them both. Virgina was a lovable female lead, easily identifable to and a strong female. Lilian, however, was not my favorite character at all and was rather grating on the nerves. Stebos was an amazing concept and Quilp was annoying, but quite brilliant. The theories introduced were interesting but not overly confusing. All of Germain's personas made the story quirky and adoringly eccentric.

This sotry has a bit of everything in it, satisfying even the pickiest reader. Romance, action, history, adventure, science fiction, betrayal, psychology, even gambling! This futuristic Grail adventure (featuring an ultimate but unseen battle between Heaven and Hell) is satsfying down to the very last sentence!

Nylund's writing is addictive, yet not at all hard to follow. However, the details involved are sparkling! I HIGHLY recommend this work, as it is an easy, interesting read and worth every cent you spend. Eric S. Nylund's A Game of Universe makes everyone want to go on their own personal quest for the Grail and be involved in the battle between Heaven and Hell. It's a shame it's out of print!

Bulfinch's Mythology (The Age of Fable - The Age of Chivalry - Legends of Charlemagne) (Illustrated), by Thomas Bulfinch

If no other knowledge deserves to be called useful but that which helps to enlarge our possessions or to raise our station in society, then Mythology has no claim to the appellation. But if that which tends to make us happier and better can be called useful, then we claim that epithet for our subject. For Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness.
Without a knowledge of mythology much of the elegant literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated. When Byron calls Rome "the Niobe of nations," or says of Venice, "She looks a Sea-Cybele fresh from ocean," he calls up to the mind of one familiar with our subject, illustrations more vivid and striking than the pencil could furnish, but which are lost to the reader ignorant of mythology. Milton abounds in similar allusions. The short poem "Comus" contains more than thirty such, and the ode "On the Morning of the Nativity" half as many. Through "Paradise Lost" they are scattered profusely. This is one reason why we often hear persons by no means illiterate say that they cannot enjoy Milton. But were these persons to add to their more solid acquirements the easy learning of this little volume, much of the poetry of Milton which has appeared to them "harsh and crabbed" would be found "musical as is Apollo's lute." Our citations, taken from more than twenty-five poets, from Spenser to Longfellow, will show how general has been the practice of borrowing illustrations from mythology.
The prose writers also avail themselves of the same source of elegant and suggestive illustration. One can hardly take up a number of the "Edinburgh" or "Quarterly Review" without meeting with instances. In Macaulay's article on Milton there are twenty such.
But how is mythology to be taught to one who does not learn it through the medium of the languages of Greece and Rome? To devote study to a species of learning which relates wholly to false marvels and obsolete faiths is not to be expected of the general reader in a practical age like this. The time even of the young is claimed by so many sciences of facts and things that little can be spared for set treatises on a science of mere fancy...

From Charles Martin's Introduction to Bulfinch's Mythology

In his Preface, Bulfinch firmly sets his work within the emerging American genre of self-improvement: Other kinds of knowledge may “enlarge our possessions or . . . raise our station in society,” and there are, of course, books that will tell us how to get rich quickly and how to behave when we have amassed our pile. But, perhaps because he had seen how fortunes may disappear overnight, never to be recovered, Bulfinch puts his faith in the kind of knowledge that can make us “happier and better.” This knowledge is the knowledge of literature, but we cannot understand the literature of our time without first understanding the mythology that literature so often alludes to.

How is this knowledge to be attained? Bulfinch is very certain about his audience. It does not consist of members of his own class, the privileged few who have had the benefits of a classical education and would have acquired such knowledge already or at least have the leisure and the means to acquire it. His audience has never gone with Homer to Troy; the Trojan War is new to them; and they want to know how the story comes out in the end: “Our readers will be anxious to know the fate of Helen, the fair but guilty occasion of so much slaughter.” As Bulfinch must have known, Helen is the creation of the poets who wrote about her, and different poets provided her with different fates. Americans love happy endings, so Bulfinch sees her reconciled at last with the husband she abandoned.

Bulfinch’s audience consists of those with whom he had come in contact during his long and unsuccessful career as a merchant, the self-made men and their wives, who do not want to have to choke down “only the dry facts without any of the charm of the original narrative.” They want the poetry, too, and they don’t have a whole lot of time to spend on getting it.

They want to be sure that this knowledge may be let into the parlors of their homes without creating any sort of offense “to pure taste and good morals.” Here a word must be said about Bulfinch’s prudery: His subservience to his society’s desire to pass over these offenses in silence resulted in a number of significant omissions. It is hard to see how it could be otherwise: The proper Bostonian of Bulfinch’s day, referring to a bull as Mr. Cow, would scarcely have known what to make of Queen Phaedra’s passion for the prize bull in her husband’s herd.

Bulfinch’s readers also want the assurance that this knowledge, so different from their daily experience, is worth having: “To devote study to a species of learning which relates wholly to false marvels and obsolete faiths is not to be expected of the general reader in a practical age like this. The time even of the young is claimed by so many sciences of facts and things that little can be set for spare treatises on a science of mere fancy.” It is not only the time but the energy as well. Bulfinch can sympathize with the tired businessman at the end of his long day in the office: “Thus we hope to teach mythology not as a study, but as a relaxation from study.”

This knowledge, easily acquired and promoting not only happiness but virtue as well, will allow the less privileged members of a restlessly mobile society access to the kind of lore that is the patrimony of the privileged. It is not, Bulfinch states explicitly, “for the learned, nor for the theologian, nor for the philosopher, but for the reader of English literature, of either sex, who wishes to comprehend the allusions so frequently made by public speakers, lecturers, essayists, and poets, and those which occur in polite conversation.” It is a little bit easier than it ought to be to mock Bulfinch’s tone here, but we would be seriously underestimating Bulfinch if we were to regard him as an elitist: His sentiments are as unabashed in their democratic impulse as those of Walt Whitman, in his preface to Leaves of Grass. Bulfinch wishes everyone to have access to the cultural tokens heretofore the possession of the few.

Beautiful and affordable edition of Bulfinch's Mythology
By Stuart Dunn
I've read a lot of mythology and legends in my 30+ years on Earth. I've read D'aulaire's illustrated classics and Edith Hamilton. It doesn't matter if it's Greek, Roman, or even Norse. I find all of it interesting and fascinating. In fact, my wife is the same way. We hope to pass on this love of mythology to our son, so we are buying him mythology books at an early age, so that when he is old enough to appreciate them, they'll be ready and waiting for him. One book we recently added to our collection was Bulfinch's Mythology.

Bulfinch's Mythology is a gorgeous leather edition, with the face of Medusa on the cover. The pages have gilded edges and there is a ribbon bookmark to mark your place. The book contains all three of the original titles, "The Age of Fable," "The Age of Chivalry," and "The Legends of Charlemagne." "The Age of Fable" not only includes Greek and Roman mythology, but brief mentions of Eastern mythology, Norse mythology, and the Druids. "The Age of Chivalry" begins with the legend of King Arthur and his knights, leads into Mabinogen (early British prose), and concludes with the likes of Beowulf and Robin Hood. Lastly, "The Legends of Charlemagne" discusses the paladins of Charlemagne.

I skimmed through the parts on mythology and Arthur, as I am very well-versed in those subjects, so for me, the parts on Charlemagne were the best. The legends surrounding him and his paladins were a refreshing read. Were they chock full of history? No, but I didn't expect them to be. They were legends that made for fanciful tales and were a delightful read. The edition of this book was a delight to read and would make a good textbook for the high school classroom or homeschooling parent. So far, I have reviewed two books from the Canterbury Classics and each have been impressive in their quality. Highly recommended.

An Excellent Guide to Ancient Myths
By RJ Stokely
This edition of Bulfinch's Mythology, published by Barnes and Noble is an excellent copy. First the basics - it is a sturdy leatherbound edition with gold leaf pages and a ribbon book marker. The font is a pretty good size (I think about pt 10), making it fairly easy to read. There are also several great classical illustrations throughout the book of the various myths and stories.
This is perfect for anyone interested in classical mythology or just looking for a good story. Bulfinch's Mythology covers the Greek, Roman, Norse, and Egyptian myths among others. The book also tells the stories of the Trojan War, Beowulf, King Arthur, Robin Hood, and many others. It is divided into three seperate sections: the Age of Fable, the Age of Chivalry, and the Legends of Charlemagne. This covers a wide swath of mythology to say the least. By reading it you will see where and how writers like Lewis, Tolkien, Scott, Shakespeare, and Milton were inspired.
If you enjoyed this I would also recommend The Illiad and the Oddyssey by Homer (also Barne and Noble leatherbound edition) and Edith Hamilton's Mythology.
