Get ready to root for the bad guy....
By Clay Sanger
With Skorkowsky's 'Mountain of Daggers' we are treated to a collection of roguish stories that aren't afraid to cut and bloody their hands on the razor's edge between classic Sword and Sorcery and Outlaw Grimdark.

'Mountain of Daggers' introduces us to the Black Raven. Some outlaws are blood-thirsty killers. Some are thuggish fighters. The Black Raven... is a thief -- lover of the chase and an old fashioned adrenaline junkie. Once you get to know the Black Raven, you realize he does these things, first and foremost, because he CAN. In a cutthroat world of ruthless criminals, killers, and outlaw power-brokers "Mountain of Daggers" follows the Black Raven through the opening acts of a journey that becomes as much for his soul and sanity as it is wealth, infamy, or the thrill of the hunt.

Not without a capacity for ruthlessness, the Black Raven's sinister streak claws at the surface as his adventures in this game of outlaws turns bloody and personal. Veiled just behind a playful smirk is a man on the edge of becoming just as cold and brutal as any scoundrel he shares Skorkowsky's vivid criminal underworld with.

If Ian Fleming had possessed a penchant for Sword and Sorcery rather than Walthers and Martinis, the Black Raven could have been his
love-child.

Skorkowsky's fantasy world is crisply and meticulously realized in culture, concept, and style. Boasting exceptional atmospherics throughout, the environment of the fantastic locations - cities, ruins, tombs, estates, brothels, wine-soaked taverns, and the grim rotten underbelly of civilization - come alive in a narrative truly immerse of the five-senses.

Punctuated by gritty outlaw-versus-outlaw capers and the most vividly narrated tales of a fantasy rogue's trade-craft I've ever read, 'Mountain of Daggers' keeps the spotlight burning bright on the concept of the master-thief and turns up the heat from beginning to end.

If you are a lover of swashbuckling rogues and merciless outlaws - pick up a copy of Seth Skorkowsky's 'Mountain of Daggers' today... and get ready to root for the bad guy.

Awesome traditional charming fantasy. Better than Damoren
By Ryan
I picked up this book on the strength of the Valducan series and Im so glad I did. Mountain of Daggers feels like it could have come straight from old school fantasy, with roguish charming thief, aligned to chaotic good, helping his guild manage the diection of nations through subterfuge, thievery, and other not strictly legal methods.

Mountain of Daggers is a collection of short stories / episodes that come together to tell the origin story of Black Raven. We see a young man transition from unlucky whelp to supremely competent master of the shadows. I cant wait to see more of Black Raven

I harbor a lifelong love of genre fiction and particularly the short story form
By JRS
Warning: spoiler in the last paragraph. I’ve put a marker on it, but thought I’d let you know.
This book makes me nostalgic. I grew up feasting on the assorted short story anthologies available at my public and school libraries. As a result, I harbor a lifelong love of genre fiction and particularly the short story form. That being said, it isn’t merely nostalgia that helped me appreciate this collection.
I love Mountain of Daggers because it aims for the sweet spot of adventure storytelling and hits it from a variety of angles. Sword and sorcery isn’t always the strongest genre for short fiction. It isn’t as established as horror or even scifi, and authors often tend write themselves out of ideas fairly quickly, replacing trailblazing in their fantasy worlds with formula. Skorkowsky could’ve easily followed this path since his stories not only take place in the same world, but are centered on the same character. (Not even a Fafhrd to Ahren’s Gray Mouser to shake up the POV.) Instead, he spices the exploits of the leading man with a wide assortment of intriguing backup characters, motives, and atmospheres. This, of course, is only possible because the stories, while chronological, are not chapters in a novel, but distinct and self-supporting delights.
I especially like the way Ahren’s adventures dabble into other genre territory for flavor. Any tale about a thief will naturally tend toward detective story tropes, but the Black Raven encounters romance (“Race for the Night Ruby,” “Lover’s Quarrel”), spycraft (“The Reluctant Assassin,” “The Darclyian Circus”), and, in a standout closer, horror (“Born of Darkness”).
Weakest link first: “Darclyian Circus” lost me for a bit. It still has the excellent details of a fantastic world, but the ambivalent closure of the one of its main tensions left me unsatisfied. Perhaps there were too many threads to weave for a short story. The Black Raven has a burglary to achieve supplemented by a cover story to keep hidden. He is hidden among innocents (for this world, anyway), hoping to achieve his goal without bloodshed. But the aforementioned innocents are by no means stupid, and the tension ratchets up with each page as I wondered how he could possible wriggle away with the burgled goal but no blood on his hands. Without saying too much, the tale ended with a hearty bang but also a dangling conflict which would have me believe Ahren is absolutely ruthless (a character point which disagrees with several of the other stories).
The last story is the hook for me (as I’m sure it was intended). Each of the others establishes Ahren’s character by degrees: clever but not omniscient, mischievous but never unprofessional, ethical but not particularly moral (or the other way around, depending on what school you attended). But Born of Darkness raises one of the few overarching narrative lines and delivers a hammer-blow to the series. The tale almost immediately eschews the sword half of sword and sorcery for outright horror. Each ingredient is familiar yet detailed enough to be chilling: a fallen townsman trapped by a Faustian deal and unusually scarred by his experiences, a narrow and seldom-used track into the dark forest littered with spookiness, and finally, a villain whose very nature cements this story as a darker world within the already bleak realm of the Black Raven. Spoiler: Proving perhaps that Skorkowsky grew as a writer while finishing this book, while a certain lack of closure in “Darclyian Circus” confounded me, “Born of Darkness” is deliciously unresolved. This narrative ending is not only a hallmark of horror; it makes an effective cliffhanger leading to Book Two of the series. I’m only hoping that the author continues the serial-but-independent nature of the tales, instead of focusing only on what is admittedly as strong a foundational narrative conflict as I’ve read or watched in an adventure story.

Very good
By Jason Meyer
This series is getting better with each episode. Of course, no spoilers will be revealed in this review. I'll just say that the conclusion of Episode 3 left me with that same feeling I get when I see a light left on in the basement just before bedtime. Did I leave that on?

Number Four and Number 12 demand that you read Episode 3
By Gwen
Eden Can Wait, Episode 1 and Episode 2 were FREE so, of course, I gobbled them up. Be careful what you take in because it will take you over. I'm hooked, I bought Episode 3 and finished it yesterday and immediately went to buy Episode 4. I hate myself for falling for "serials." I hope that I will become disenchanted but his writing is so darn good and the story line so different that I can't stop. I've bought up his other writings as well. Damn you Ray Kuili and welcome to my world.

Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame baseball player Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on a relief supply mission on December 31st, 1972. In this fictional novel his plane does not crash! What will the rest of his baseball career be like? What will the remainder of his life look like? The story of Clemente’s Lost Years are told through the voice of Rico, a team trainer hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1972. Rico, who is now an old man, befriends a young boy in his native Puerto Rico. The boy takes an interest in Rico’s stories about the old days with Clemente and the Pirates. Rico tells the boy every detail he can remember from over 40 years ago including working to heal Clemente’s chronic back and neck pain, and how he is invited on the near-fatal plane flight to Nicaragua. He tells of the dangerous experience of landing in the earthquake-ravaged country. Rico also follows Clemente closely through the last seasons of his baseball career, his big retirement ceremony, the building and grand opening of the Ciudad Deportiva Youth Sports Facility in Puerto Rico, and the rest of his life after baseball. Clemente’s career is well documented with his 3000 hits, 12 Gold Gloves, and a .317 lifetime batting average. This novel lets the reader’s imagination explore The Lost Years after December 31st, 1972.

Great "what if" scenario for baseball fans
By Anthony Rutigliano
This novel is very well crafted and brings to life the environment of the 1970's Pirates. As a lifelong Pirates fan, I found enjoyment reliving those years with the big hitters- Stargell, Mazeroski, Sanguillen, Clemente, and the bunch.
After the shocking plane crash, which shortened Clemente's career, I never considered what might have happened in the aftermath. In my opinion, the strength of this novel is how the story weaves the actual events of the time together with the fiction to create a new reality. Of course, no one will ever know what would have happened to Roberto Clemente after his plane crash, but the scenario in the novel is about as plausible as any I can think of.
I have personally met Danny Murtaugh on a number of occasions and I was happy to see that he was portrayed realistically here.
I enjoyed it. I think most baseball fans will also.

By Amazon Customer
The premise of the story is good, but you do not speak to a 10 year old Puerto Rican boy using the the vocabulary that the uneducated Rico uses. The words and phraseology is way out of place in the slums of Puerto Rico. There is overkill when bringing in famous baseball players. It is too bad, because the story has lots of good ideas, but it suddenly rushes to and end. It is as though the author ran out of time and needed to finish the book or he would starve. Again, too bad, because it could have been a great story. It does have a twist at the end, that was unpredictable.

Valour and Vanity (Glamourist Histories), by Mary Robinette Kowal

Acclaimed fantasist Mary Robinette Kowal has enchanted many fans with her beloved novels featuring a Regency setting in which magic―known here as glamour―is real. In Valour and Vanity, master glamourists Jane and Vincent find themselves in the sort of a magical adventure that might result if Jane Austen wrote Ocean's Eleven.
After Melody's wedding, the Ellsworths and Vincents accompany the young couple on their tour of the continent. Jane and Vincent plan to separate from the party and travel to Murano to study with glassblowers there, but their ship is set upon by Barbary corsairs while en route. It is their good fortune that they are not enslaved, but they lose everything to the pirates and arrive in Murano destitute.

Jane and Vincent are helped by a kind local they meet en route, but Vincent is determined to become self-reliant and get their money back, and hatches a plan to do so. But when so many things are not what they seem, even the best laid plans conceal a few pitfalls. The ensuing adventure is a combination of the best parts of magical fantasy and heist novels, set against a glorious Regency backdrop.

From Booklist
If Jane Austen were to write about a magical heist, her novel would not be all that different from the fourth installment in Kowal’s (Without a Summer, 2013) Glamour History series. Jane and Vincent travel to Murano, an island off of Venice, to study glassblowing in hopes of amalgamating it with glamour (magic). Though clever, they fall victim to an elaborate hoax that consumes their funds and leaves them stranded in Italy. Living in poverty, they team up with Catholic nuns and a street puppeteer to enact retribution. Adventures, obstacles, and high jinks propel the story while upholding its romantic core. Jane and Vincent’s healthy, steadfast marriage makes sense in the Regency era yet satisfies modern standards, even when their quips and stubbornness create problems instead of solutions. The act of weaving glamour into art or apparatuses makes for entrancing imagery, complementing Kowal’s Victorian writing style and enhancing the action-packed scenes. Lively, well written, and with sprinkles of history, Valour and Vanity will charm both adventurers and romantics. Add Lord Byron as cohort for extra fun. --Biz Hyzy

Exciting and engaing
By Cissa
If you are not reading this series by Kowal, this book- the fourth- is a fine place to start. Its tone is a lot different than that of the previous novels, though- they were more "Jane Austen with magic", and this one is "if Austen wrote a heist/intrigue novel..."

We get to see much more of Jane's and Vincent's relationship, and how they are learning to work together and rely on each other, albeit through struggles both within the relationship and caused by outside forces. Fot this reason, it seemed more intimate to me than the previous novels in the series, much as I loved them.

Also, the plot is more obviously exciting! Pirates! Swindles! Reversals of fortune! Revenge! Secret motivations and spying! and even Lord Byron! Kowal did a brilliant job of winding the very personal and intimate into the more carefully convoluted and eventful plot, with each reflecting on the other in many ways. Wonderfully wrought!

The other characters come alive, too, both the Good Guys and the not. I especially loved the portrayals of the nuns. Having attended a Catholic women's college, I learned great respect and admiration for nuns, and these are GREAT nuns, each very distinct.

I also appreciated that the glamour- the magic- was described more precisely, giving me a better idea of what it can and cannot do.

This was an excellent novel that kept me up a few times reading when I ought to have been asleep- and that's rare for me these days.

Highly recommended, for a perspective on the Regency era and for those who would love a very unique magical system in fantasy, or who have been reading the series. I think this one is my favorite in it thus far.

SO much better than the rest of the series!
By How Roode
Having just finished Valour and Vanity, I find myself wishing that the rest of the books in the Glamourist Histories had been heist novels! This book is head and shoulders above the other three in the series, both in terms of character development (and likability), and of plot, not to mention the evocation of time and place.

What most impressed me in this book was how Kowal managed to balance the intrigue and suspense of a heist story with the unsettlingly intimate and personal portrayal of a marriage in an all-too-common crisis. I suspect I am not the only wife to feel that I've had the exact same argument as the Vincents, almost word for word. Had that struggle made up the majority of the novel, it would have been too heavy-handed, but when interwoven with the mystery and action of a pirate attack, spy activities, and a quest for revenge, it makes for an exciting and compelling novel.

In short, each Glamourist book has been markedly better than the last, so I can't wait for the final installment!

Mastering illusions
By raesdays
I have not yet read the three books before this, but that did not keep me from enjoying Valour and Vanity tremendously, and it should not stop you from picking up any book from this series either.

The Regency era is Jane Austen’s England. The Prince Regent, who is the son of Mad King George (remember him from learning about the revolution, my American friends?), is a big proponent of excess and art, and Jane and Vincent work as his glamourists. Glamour is basically magic that creates illusions by manipulating light and sound.

And that becomes Vincent and Jane’s trade in this novel: not glamour, but illusion.

When the couple heads to Murano to find a glassmaker, they are waylaid by pirates. And that is the least alarming thing that happens to them on this trip. They end up swindled by those they thought were friends and can’t leave Murano until they pay back what they owe.

It seems so simple right? If you lose your money on vacation, you go back to your hotel and call the bank, or your mom, or the American Embassy, if things really go wrong. But Jane and Vincent don’t have telephones or airplanes or online banking. Penniless, and with no practical skills save for glamour, they are left with nothing but each other. Well, that and Jane’s wedding ring, which they pawn for cash.

We never have quests any more. When is the last time you had to go somewhere to find something or bring it back or travel to create something you need or fulfil your destiny? We don’t even have to go to the mall at Christmas time, you can just order everything online. Our problem solving these days is very different from what Jane and Vincent face.

But what they go through is familiar. I’ve been poor and struggling to pay the rent. I’ve bought something fancy and small as a treat just to beat myself up about the extra $5 it cost. I haven’t been able to find a job and have lied about how great I’m doing in the meantime. And I’ve fought with loved ones and tried to hide the painful truth. And I’ve turned to something drastic to get back on my feet again.

When Vincent gets to the edge of what he can take, the couple gets a lucky break. (As so often happens in life, as well.) Their lucky break allows them to make a plan to take back what was stolen from them. Using every glamourist trick they know, plus new tricks in the physical realm, they embark on their dangerous plan–with the help of some new friends.

This heist is more fun than any I’ve ever been a part of (which, ok, is actually none in real life), and it includes feisty nuns. So while Jane and Vincent’s plan may go wrong, those reading about it can’t lose.

I loved this story and I love Jane and Vincent. I’ve been known to roll my eyes at romance every now and again, but I could read about this couple forever. Neither of them is perfect, and they fight and struggle like everyone else. Romance isn’t nonstop perfection or the absence of conflict. That is exhausting and impossible. But their love seems true–true to life and true to each other.

Odd, original, heartfelt, compelling.
By BoB Napier
A daringly imaginative introduction into an ancient secret war. The narrative is fast-paced but never lets you go. I loved the contrast of sleek, powerful forces battling it out in back alleys and abandoned, overgrown old houses. We only get a peek at the lore behind the war, but I can't wait for the next installment to learn more about this eerie and mysterious history. I only gave it four stars because I want more!

Good collection on the same theme and events
By JPS
This is a good collection of four novellas, each of which is about a hundred pages long. The general theme is the Tau invasion of the Empire, beyond the Gulf of Damocles, and their attack of the strategic Agrellan system. An interesting feature of this collection is that while the four stories can be read separately and are written by four separate authors, they are also clearly linked and the authors seem to have coordinated and talked to each other.

Another good feature is that this title does add to the existing collections in several respects. The descriptions of the Tau and the multiple illustrations of their highly advanced technology and their consummate skills of deception, subversion and surprise are one of the most interesting aspects that are common to all four stories. A second element that I enjoyed was the variety of styles and perspectives from which various episodes of the same theme of events – the Tau invasion – are being told. One perspective which I found particularly interesting what that of the human “traitors” – whether an ex-captain of the Imperial Guard or an ex-Inquisitor turned rogue – serving the Tau against the Empire of Humankind and wanting to believe in the “Greater Good” because they hope it is better than the ghastly, decadent and cruel Empire.

Those liking battles will, of course, find plenty to their liking. Interestingly, and for a change, the Imperials do not end up by winning, quite the contrary in fact since their shock troops, among which are the White Scars of Korsarro Khan and the Raven Guard commanded by their Chapter Master. Also present are a regiment of Catachans and the (great!) heavily armoured and devastating Knights of Voldoris who turn out to be more than a match for their Tau counterparts.

I liked all four stories, although some are perhaps better than others. While not really “bad”, I found that “Black Leviathan” was perhaps the weakest of the four, essentially because the behaviour of the squad of Jade Dragons’ Space Marines, and of their sergeant in particular, is hard to believe. At a minimum, the author should have provided more elements and explanations, perhaps more context about this Successor Chapter (about which I knew nothing, not even who their Primogenitor Chapter was supposed to be!) to explain why they compromised the whole mission in the way they did. The end of this story is also somewhat implausible, with the sergeant commanding the Jade Dragons’ squad getting of rather lightly given his actions.

Then there are the characters, many of which are rather interesting. You will get to know quite a bit more about the White Scars, their captain, but also a couple of their seers and Cemakan, the old grumpy veteran, but also about the Tau with their gifted warlord (or rather “warlady”) Shadowsun, and some of the other caster, in particular the idealist Skilltalker, ready to sacrifice himself for the “Greater Good”, and the rather unscrupulous Supreme Ethereal. My personal favourite, however, was Patriarch Tybalt of House Terryn and his massive Imperial Knights.

There are nevertheless a few glitches here and there and this is why I will rate the collection four stars, but not five. I have already mentioned those in “Black Leviathan”. There is also one in “Blood Oath”, the first and one of the strongest stories. Several mentions are made about a certain Traitor Shoh to which the warlord Shadowsun seems to be somewhat related but you never get to understand who this person is, what he has done to become a “traitor” in the eyes of the Tau and what the relationship with Shadowsun happens to be.

Problems with all these Space Marine novels
By Steven L. Coker
The problem with most of these Space Marine novels is they are pretty much all the same plot -- Bad guys pop up and catch them off guard. Big Battle - everyone dies, except the Big Name bad guys (who always seem to escape).
The Space Marines NEVVVER seem to be on the offensive and are always out-numbered.
Cant figure out why the Astartes NEVVVER seem to be the aggressors in these books. A few of the writers of these books are quite good but need to work on different angles.
I also wonder if anyone is ever going to write about the battle for Earth, when the Emperor and the traitors (Horus) battled it out. Something everyone knows happened but it has never been novelized.

Bookworm Speaks!- Damocles (Space Marine Battles)
By Jordan T. Brantley
Bookworm Speaks!

Warhammer 40,000

Damocles

by Phil Kelly, Guy Haley, Ben Counter, and Josh Reynolds

****

The Story: Four Novellas that focus on the events of the second Damocles Gulf Crusade.

Two centuries ago, the Imperium of Man and the upstart Tau Empire fought to a standstill in the Damocles Gulf. Now, as the 41st Millennium draws to a close, the Tau have returned. As the world of Agrellan falls under attack, the White Scars and the Raven Guard rush to its defense, but with the skilled Commander Shadowsun leading the alien forces, the Space Marines and their allies are hard pressed. Kor’sarro Khan, Huntmaster of the White Scars, swears that he will win the day in the most direct way possible-by taking Shadowsun’s head.

The Good: First off…it is a story of the White Scars. A first founding Legion under the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, who have an emphasis of mobile conflict, are sorely lacking proper representation in the Black Library, which is a real shame as they are quite fascinating. This is only the third book that emphasizes the White Scars to any significant degree. The same can be said about the Raven Guard. Bookworm doesn’t think he owns any books with the sons of Corvus Corax as the focus, which is also a shame. To see both chapters further expanded over the course of the novellas is a real treat. Furthering the entertainment value is the contrast to how the different chapters operate. The White Scar’s ride proudly into battle and collect the heads of their foes and display as trophies. The Raven Guard operate from the shadows and strike silently, their names unknown, even among their brothers. Contrast is a gateway to conflict and it leads into the primary reason why the antagonists of this volume are so appealing.

Of all the enemies of the Imperium of Man that Games Workshop has introduced, the Tau Empire may not be a favorite but from a creative standpoint they are one of the best. A great way to really challenge a protagonist is to pit them against themselves. The Tau represents what the Imperium of Man should have been had the Emperor had not been imprisoned upon the Golden Throne, a peaceful, progressive society, which values technological innovation and a government that works for the benefit of all, (supposedly). The Tau are also zealots in the same way that the Space Marines are. The Astartes fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Emperor and the Tau fight whole-heartedly for their faith in the Greater Good, the philosophy that governs their society. The other enemies of the Imperium are fairly one dimensional: The orks just want to pillage and plunder, the Tyranids just want to eat everything, the Chaos Space Marines want to do both, and don’t get Bookworm started on the Necrons. The Tau are not a force of nature like Orks or Tyranids, they are a rival society which has multiple dimensions, same as the Imperium.

The only exception to this might be the Eldar but Bookworm has not read any stories about them yet.

Also, like the Imperium of Man, there may be less than honorable forces at work. While the Tau preach something that sounds good, the authors are wise to include little tidbits here and there that show that there is something far more insidious to the Tau than meets the eye. This is just Bookworm’s own hypothesis but it is hinted in one of the novellas that the Tau surgically alter humans to look like Tau. Whose greater good is it?

Speaking of covert motives. We get a new Space Marine Chapter! The Jade Dragons are introduces in the third novella of the volume. They are very interesting and Bookworm hopes we see them again. They definitely follow a more mystical approach to war than the Ultramarines. Like the differences between the White Scars and Raven Guard, the contrast between the two very different chapters provides amusing conflicts and different approaches between the chapters of the novella.

The Flaws: While by itself, the story is not bad, the fact is that the third novella in the book, Black Leviathan, feels out of place compared to the other stories. It takes place on a different planet other than Agrellan, which is contrary to the plot summary, and it involves neither the White Scars or the Raven Guard. It is back to the Black Library favorites of the Ultramarines, and The Jade Dragons, which we know nothing about. The other three stories share a common denominator but the only thing the Black Leviathan has in common with the other three is the fact that the Tau are there. We have plenty of Ultramarines stories, lets keep exploring the world of the Khan and the Raven.

Another common flaw is the disparate head-hopping that takes place. The perspectives switch places between the character pretty often and it can get a little confusing. In a few of the chapters the pacing needs some reworking.

Final Verdict: Damocles is an excellent book that provides multiple perspectives on a great crusade of the Imperium of Man.

2015 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention
By Elisa
This story was an absolute joy to read. The Duchess of Manusk is what all historical fiction should espouse to be; rich, sweepingly epic, full of both stunning heights and painful lows. The pacing was smooth, the manner engaging. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, and demand anyone who enjoys historical romance set in medieval times read it.

I love a good historical. I'm a huge history nerd. So because the author introduces a sort of historical feel to the book with the clothing, means of transportation, titles, weaponry, etc. I read this book with an eye sort of turned toward certain historical elements; giving leeway to the fact that this was still a fantasy novel, therefore, anything was literally possible. There were moments when the spelling, speech, and dialogue were incorrect or changed/switched from one part to another, but in spite of that, this story, filled with non-stop action, adventure, survival, strength, endurance, courage, intrigue, trust, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, and love was simply brilliant. The actual plot in and of itself was delightfully refreshing, and certain elements of it were heart-wrenchingly emotional. I was very invested in the characters and the plot, and though there were times when I was lost when it came to the setting, it was still beautifully described. The entire book was amazing and I am so glad I read it twice.

Promising yet disappointing
By Marissa
I read the first 2 chapters of this novel as a sample and was hooked. If only the rest of the book had lived up to those promising first chapters. The "twists" of the plot were laughably obvious and most egregious of all; there is no chemistry between characters that are supposed to be falling in love. It all played out like a less than b grade romantic action movie for teens. I am not usually this harsh, not being a writer myself, but I found this novel deeply disappointing. Only die hard fans of the genre will enjoy this novel.

Great story
By Dwynwen
Really nice story and the beginning of I hope what it's to become a very good fantasy adventure series. I didn't gave it yhe 5 start because I think we could have gotten better development in some areas and unless they used magic to heal the last battle was a bit to much to believe at least for me. But I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, other than that I really recommend this title if you love RPG's, fantasy, knights and all that's in between

page turner, fascinating story, teenagers loved it too
By J. Kuhn
This book really captured my attention! The descriptive scenes and developing plot kept me turning the page well into the night. There are few books that have me as gripped as The Beauty Thief. My two teenage daughters loved it as well, and we can't wait for the next one in the series.

Wonderful Fairytale
By E. Rawls
I give 4/4.5 stars out of 5

This is a lovely book and an enjoyable read. A new fairytale classic. It begins a little slow, depending on what you consider slow (everyone is different) and peaceful, where everything seems wonderful and a dream come true for Princess Caityn. But the peace doesn’t last long. The Princess is attacked one fateful evening, as the person known as the Beauty Thief steals away what is most precious to her: her inner beauty. And since that moment, she becomes an empty shell of a person who can barely grasp emotions or what it means to feel anymore. The race is on as her Prince and friends work to get back what was stolen and make her whole once more, before it is too late. The clock is ticking, and the Beauty Thief is nowhere to be found. Can they save Caityn’s life and restore her lost heart, her inner beauty, or is she doomed to remain this pitiful existence that knows only anger and bitterness? What perils must they face on this quest, and can they survive it? You’ll have to read it to find out! :)

The writing isn’t always perfect, but the story makes it a worthwhile read, in my opinion.

Story contains: There is sword fighting, creepy thieves, a dangerous quest, castles and extensive kingdoms inside this book and its world known as The Twelve Realms. We get a glimpse of these Realms, but there is so much more yet to lear; I hear that the sequel and following books will show us more, and delve further into these other lands. I am looking forward to that!

Characters: The villain, named The Beauty Thief, is a villain to match any of the classic fairytales’ villains with his cunning, greed and evil. The Prince, however, is more than charming; he is a strong male role model, and a person like you or me with genuine feelings and emotions; his love for Caityn drives him to the ends of the Realms to try and save her. Caityn is an interesting character to follow throughout the story as she goes from being sweet, loving and kind to bitter, harsh and unable to understand others’ feelings. She often wonders why people care about her, and thinks they are idiots for caring. Overall, I enjoyed the different characters and how they interacted.

Plot: I really liked the concept of the Beauty Thief and the lesson within its plot. It speaks of inner beauty being the most important beauty, for without it we are like empty shells and unable to understand love.

I recommend this book to all who read fairytales, and stories with princesses, genuine love, and the battles between good vs evil.

Captivating Fantasy
By Maureen Murray Heaton
"The Beauty Thief" by Rachael Ritchey is a charming and original tale that takes the reader to a magical realm inhabited by princesses, princes, knights, knaves and, of course, villains. It is a lovely YA novel, but also has crossover appeal to lovers of fantasy, or, as in my case, sentimental readers who fondly recall the fairy tales and myths of youth. As a bonus, the story highlights a wonderful set of morals and character traits that enhance its value for young readers. The fictional world was colorfully and enticingly described and the characters drawn believably. From the beginning, we care about the inhabitants of this enchanting land. The heroine, Princess Caityn, immediately captivates the reader with her inner and outer beauty and her intended, Prince Theiander, with his quiet strength and bravery. The main villain, the fearsome gnomish creature for whom the book is named, and who lives by stealing inner and outer beauty, is artfully depicted and so much fun to hate! A good villain is the heart of a fairy tale or myth and this one more than lives up to the task. Kudos to the author, too, on her artful cover selection and enticing title; they are both masterful and draw the reader in with a promise that is more than met. Highly recommended for fans of YA fiction, fantasy and all my fellow lovers of fairy tales, myths and enchantment. Grab a copy and read this captivating tale of love, envy, treachery and bravery. Like me, you'll be eagerly awaiting the second book in the series, "Captive Hope."

Not just for tourists - learn something new with every step!
By Suze
This book was written by a friend, so I was a little biased from the start... However, it is a GREAT guide to New Orleans. I lived in the Crescent City for almost three decades. moving after Katrina incurred her wrath on our home. My heart lives in two places, my hometown and my adopted NOLA. What a treasure for natives, visitors and tourists! Walking the city is a great way to justify all that wonderful food and drink you will enjoy while there!

This book is a fantastic guide for any one who is really desiring to get the most of there visit to "The Big Easy." I wished I have had this item my prior trips. The author does an excellent job in breaking down the different parts which one might wish to spend time exploring in more detail. I would suggest utilizing this guide along with your "smart phone" or tablet to get the most of your walking or driving experience. Also, the restaurant reconmendations are a bonus saving one time and a few "$." I recommend the Kindle edition as it will provide one with detail maps of the areas you are walking through.

Wonderful Ideas for Easy Walks around NOLA
By S. A. MCGEE
Just back from a trip to New Orleans and purchased this book at the Tulane University bookstore while I was there. Now I can't wait to go back and try some of the suggested walking tours. I've been to the city several times but there is always more to see and I love how the author presents 30 walks you can do by yourself and really get to experience all the wonderful neighborhoods of New Orleans. Easy to follow and written by a native. It's small enough that you can pack it in your bag and bring it along. Enjoy.
