Screaming For More!
By C Is The Big Dog
This is the second in the series of Dark Screams anthologies. I received a free copy for an honest review. I liked this edition better than I did the first one, there were stories from some of my favorite writers, such as Robert R McCammon, Graham Masterton, and Richard Christian Matheson.

The following is from the description on Amazon along with my thoughts on each story.

THE DEEP END by Robert McCammon
Everyone thinks the drowning death of Neil Calder in the local swimming pool was a tragic accident. Only his father knows better. Now, on the last night of summer, Neil returns in search of revenge.

One of my favorite authors, I loved the story about a father so determined to find sense in the senseless death of his son he sets out to find the truth, only sometimes the truth can be more than we can handle.

INTERVAL by Norman Prentiss
Flight 1137 from St. Louis by way of Nashville has gone missing. As anxious friends and family gather around the gate, a ticket clerk finds herself eyewitness to a moment of inhuman evil.

I liked the idea of the story and wished there was something more, or perhaps longer. Once I understood the true meaning of "Interval" I was left flat with its ending. I wanted to know more or perhaps if I knew the intentions earlier on I would have a differnce of opion, but as it stands I felt this was one of the weaker entries.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK by Shawntelle Madison
Eleanor has come from New York City to prep an old Victorian house in Maine for America’s Mysterious Hotspots. Although she’s always thrown herself into her work, this job will take her places she’s never dreamed of going.

Surprisingly good story from a writer I knew nothing about. I thought it was well written and a nice twist. After the story I recalled an old Men Without Hats song, "Ideas For Walls."

THE NIGHT HIDER by Graham Masterton
C. S. Lewis wrote about a portal that led to a world of magic and enchantment. But the wardrobe in Dawn’s room holds only death—until she solves its grisly mystery.

A master story teller takes a fantastic story and reworks it to suite his own twisted needs in this devilishly delightful take on a classic.

WHATEVER by Richard Christian Matheson
A 1970s rock ’n’ roll band that never was—in a world that is clearly our own . . . but perhaps isn’t, not anymore . . . or, at least, not yet—takes one hell of a trip.

Great story, would have liked this to be a bit longer. Whatever seems like a band that could actually have existed or exist in the realm of our imagination. The greatest band that never was, written in a almost biographic style it resonates long after you finish reading.

Summations: I thought that this volume had stronger stories in it and would highly recommend it.

Solid, Creepy Stories
By E.M. MacCallum
Short stories, for me, are just snippets of a bigger, more awesome story. This is often why I don't review them. I want the big story, not a preview. But I couldn't pass up on the incredibly talented authors. If you're unfamiliar with any of the names, this is like that sample platter at the pub. So sit back, keep your feet from dangling over the edge of the bed, keep a light on, and enjoy.

The Deep End by Robert R. McCammon is a haunting tale with a creepy and mysterious adversary. I always like McCammon's descriptions. They're so visual that it reels the reader in. No pun intended.

Interval by Norman Prentiss makes a bad day of work seem inconsequential when it comes to what lurks between hope and dismay. This was a unique story and one I wish I could read more of.

If These Walls Could Talk by Shawntelle Madison. What can I say? It was a classic. Gotchic building, unsuspecting victims and a villain in the wings. What threw me was the ending. What the heck?! I mean this as a compliment. I could have had another 100 pages.

The Night Hider by Graham Masterton is a heart-pounding story that involves a bit of C.S. Lewis. I found this to be fascinating! The premise behind the "night hider" was a cool take too.

Whatever by Richard Christian Matheson is a unique tale. It took a bit more for me to get into but was a great conclusion to the anthology.

At the end of it all, I wish I could have full novels out of each of these stories. *Sigh*. My favorite story was probably If These Walls Could Talk by Shawntelle Madison. It surprised, horrified and kept me glued to those pages. I also enjoyed Robert R. McCammon's style. The man knows how to paint a picture in the reader's mind.

So, if you don't have a lot of time on your hands, take on a short story. It's not long and will please anyone looking for a solid, creepy story.

While I enjoyed Dark Screams
By Michael Cieslak
Once again, let me preface the review by stating that the copy I read was an ARC I received for free for the purpose of reviewing it.

While I enjoyed Dark Screams: Volume Two, I found it a little disjointed. The stories did not mesh with each other as the stories in the first volume did (despite different topics, the tones were similar enough in the first volume that the book seemed more seamless).

The second volume in the series contains five short stories by masters of the horror genre.

"The Deep End" by Robert McCammon was by far my favorite in this volume. The story of a shape-shifting creature living in a community pool, taking small children year after year, is full of tension and genuine fear. There is an undertone of uncertainty as well. Is any of this actually happening or has the protagonist been driven mad with grief?

Norman Prentiss' "Interval" starts as a heart wrenching tale of loss and grief. The build up of emotions is almost unbearable. When it switches to a different type of story near the midpoint, the result is a totally different story, but one which is equally entertaining. My only complaint is that the end seemed a bit as if it was the set-up for a series of related tales.

"If These Walls Could Talk" is reminiscent of classic people-invited-to-explore-a-haunted-house stories like The Haunting of Hill House and Hell House, but with an ending twist from Mr. Poe. Creepy and fun.

In "The Night Hider," Graham Masterson poses the question: what if CS Lewis' Narnia series had a horribly dark inspiration? The answer is a story of revenge and haunting which is fun, but a bit too long.

The only story which I did not particularly care for was the last one, entitled "Whatever." I am normally a huge fan of Richard Christian Matheson, but this history of a rock band, while intriguing, lacked any genuine scares.

About the Author
M.E. Cunningham came from a land, far, far away, and ended up on a little farm in northern Utah, living with numerous magical creatures: horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and a goat. Cunningham began writing quite by accident, the fall through the fabric of time dropped M.E. into the mysterious land of Terratir. Terratir is not the first magical realm Cunningham has discovered, but it is the only one to be written about so far. Favorite topics include ghosts, monsters, dragons, and magic. Cunningham also likes TV, going to the movies, and camping in the mountains as long as there are no spiders, mosquitoes, or ticks. Cunningham’s first book, Reluctant Guardian, was published in August 2013. While always in search of the strange and unexplainable, this author will write each story as it is discovered. Be on the look out!

She's back!!!
By Jayelle
*I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.*

Wow! As far as sequels go, this one takes the cake!!! The Elementalist answers questions you were left wondering after Reluctant Guardian. There is definitely more action and the journey this book takes you on is out of this world!

Melissa writes with a flair for blending our world with the afterlife. Alisa has possessed the body of Claire, an elementalist. She looks at as an opportunity to reunite with Brecken. But things don't always go as planned and evil forces are at work to disrupt Idir Shall. Alisa must figure out what's happening and how to get help from Brecken, who no longer remembers her.

A definite must read! One of my favorite sequels in a long time.

This is the sequel Reluctant Guardian fans have been waiting for! V""V
By VampireLovingDork aka NerdGirlVamp
This is the sequel that Reluctant Guardian fans have been waiting for! You get some of the answers that you have been waiting for since the first book but wow what a journey you have to go on. Melissa does a wonderful job of mixing in the current world with the various places in the afterlife and certainly makes you think about what might be out there.

I love that YA authors are taking this sort of path and whilst this is a paranormal YA so may have a touch more leeway it brings things such as teen suicide to the surface and possibly opens the door for conversations because ALL actions have consequences.

5 out of 5 stars from me! V""V

Definitely more actionpacked and fastpaced than book one!!
By CrazyBookworm
Book two moves on a lot from how I remember book one being... this instalment to the series is more action-packed and fast-paced as opposed to the thought-provoking first book. We start off one year after book one ended as the two main characters are once again reintroduced when Alisa starts to possess the body of an elementalist. Finally she can take the opportunity to revisit Brecken. However, there are larger forces at work as Alisa becomes a pawn to capture Brecken.

A must-read second instalment to Reluctant Guardian!! Happy reading :)

Keeps getting better and better
By vhor
I'm sure I don't need to tell you how well written this series is now that we've reached book four, but I will anyway. The action scenes are clear and easy to understand. The personal interactions between characters make sense and flow naturally, which is something many authors seem to have a problem with. I particularly like how Mr Bailey throws in little bits of real life such as music and books, it makes the world and characters seem like they actually exist.

Many writers seem to believe that endless action and non-stop fights make a superhero story. In Action Figures Mr Bailey has proved that false, his writing is just as enthralling when dealing with personal moments as when describing epic battles. This book is slightly more mature than previous entries and a little darker but no less enjoyable. If you liked the first 3 you'll love this one! And if you have not read the earlier volumes now's the time to get started.

Can't wait for the next.
By M. Rotton
I started reading the Action Figures series at about book 2 and have eagerly awaiting all follow ups. I'm a big fan of superhero fiction and these books are in my top three series'. My favorite is usually whichever I've read last.

With three previous book the author has already done a great deal of development on the characters. That allows the fourth book to be a little more character heavy. There's still certainly enough action to keep ones heart rate up, and I never felt the book dragged, it's just a bit more about how the characters relate to each other. This book is definitely darker, with all of the characters going through some real trials.

The problem with blowing through a book in one day is now I'm done with it. I'm already looking towards the future and anticipating a great book 5.

Michael Bailey has another hit on his hands.
By Seth Holmes
One thing I realized while reading this book is it's not a series about super heroes who happen to be teenagers, it's a series about teenagers who happen to be super heroes. It's a world where people know super heroes and villains exist. These kids are dealing with personal issues all while dealing with trying to keep their world safe. It would be as if we had a squad of undercover teenage FBI agents in the real world.

In that respect, the book lives up to its title (which has ear-wormed me again). I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but throughout the series the kids have had to deal with some pretty awful moments in their life, including the loss of a brother or parent. But never in the context of the story as well. There are times where you're going to feel your heart being ripped out of your chest, it's true. All the heartbreak that a teenager might have to deal with comes through in this book.

Bailey also tackles the sensitive subject of teenage sexuality in all its forms. There is a lot of dealing with the sensitive subject of revealing things to one's parents, and I'm not just talking about, "Hey mom, I'm gay." There are so many different things that come out in this book, revelations by major and minor characters. He even touches a bit on inter-race relations, but there's a chance to explore more of that in later books.

Some people may not like the focus on teenage sexuality, but it's not like there are steamy love scenes, there is only innuendo and exactly what one would expect from teenage sex...disappointment.

It is a cruel summer for Carrie and her friends, but Bailey doesn't seem to like cliff hangers so much so while there are more stories to come and more issues to look at, most things are resolved within the story.

I am what one might call a "slow reader" in that I tend to fall asleep a lot while reading, but I made it through this book in about 3 days. This doesn't happen often so it tells you just how good this book must be.

great book but too many errors!
By marie79
the ending was good, I do feel (as others have said on Spark X) that the story left Cameron hanging. Over all the book was good, I liked how it flowed, however; the editing was HORRIBLE! I am not perfect by any means, but the errors were so noticeable and I feel if I pay for a book--it should be edited properly! That is why I gave 3 stars..

Great finish to this part of the series
By Amazon Customer
I picked up my first book in this series after being hooked by the Orphan series and loved the way it changed the whole direction of the story but remained in a familiar set of worlds. This book was a great finish dwelling on the cold war aspects of relationships which the author openly admits are reflective of our own. Like all good science fiction books it sets familiar themes where we can explore them and explore our reactions to them from a distance. Loved the characters, loved the final linkages, but ould have loved the ending to be a little more drawn out as it all finished with a bang. Great book, keep writing

Rescuing Orion
By Arthur W Jordin
Balance Point (2014) is the third SF novel in the Orphan's Legacy series, following Undercurrents. The initial volume in this sequence is Overkill. This volume also contains the short story Mole Hunt(2011), set in the same universe, but with different characters.

In the previous volume, Polian was checking an operation in the arctic circle when someone fired on the Tressen troops. He sent out a skimmer to search through a blizzard for the intruder. They couldn't find anything in the snowstorm, but accidentally collided with the shooter.

The intruder was taken to Tressel for hospitalization. The Tressens thought that the patient was an Iridian assassin. Yet Polian believed that the patient was a Trueborn operative.

The operative remained unconscious in the hospital. Polian brought in a Yavi interrogator to tap the memories of the unconscious operative. The specialist brought the patient back to consciousness and drained ninety percent of the pertinent memories.

Howard talked Jazen back into Human Union Intelligence. Kit had vanished on Tressel while investigating an alliance between the Yavis and the Tressens. He was concerned by the alliance, but was more worried about the disappearance of Kit.

In this novel, Jazen Parker is the son of Jason Wander and Mimi Ozawa. He was born on Yavet without official authorization and then served in the Legion as a tanker. After the grezzen incident, he became a special-operations case officer for the Human Union. He is Kit's partner.

Catherine Trentin Born is a Trueborn from Earth. Kit is a Colonel in the US Army, seconded to the Peacekeeping dForces of the Human Union. She is also a Senior Special-operations case officer. She is Jazen's partner.

Howard Hibble is a Lieutenant General in the US Army and the Director of Intelligence for the Human Union. He is Kit's boss and a friend of Jazen's father.

Maxillian Polian is Director General of Internal Security for the Unified Republics of Yavet. He is the father of Ruberd Polian, who died on Tressel.

Gill is the new Director General of External Security for the Unified Republics of Yavet. He was the commanding officer of Ruberd when he died.

Orion Parker is an Illegal midwife on Yavet. She had been Jazen's foster mother until he escape into the Legion.

Carl Otto is the Hospitality Vice President of the Bank of Rand. He is a spy for Union Intelligence.

Mort is a grezzen male, a eleven-ton sentient telepathic alien carnivore. He and his species have been the top predators on their planet for millions of years.

Bartram Cutler is a Trueborn from Earth. He owned the richest and most powerful interstellar firm in Human Space. Then he was convicted in a secret trial and imprisoned. He was forced from his prior positions and all his know bank accounts were forfeited.

In this story, Jazen has been summoned to the Okefenokee Chemical Weapons Test Range. When he arrives, he finds one soldier playing possum, a wrecked multi-terrain transport, and a flame thrower. The fires are slowly dying down.

Jazen hears Mort roaring nearby, so he walks out to communicate with the telepath. He could have mindtalked from where he was, but his personal presence is necessary to hold Mort's attention. Mort has mindheard that Cutler was pardoned and released.

Three days later, Jazen attends a political affair. Kit has just returned and he is much more interested in her presence than the affair itself. They find a bed near Kit's sailboat.

Later, Howard tells them that the new president is cutting his department. No more raids against Yavi excursions. Jazen points out that if the Javis get C-drive, then the only alternative would be nuking the planet.

Being a former native of Yavet, he knows that most of the population are not enemies of the Trueborn. Kit suggests that Cutler may be working with the Yavis. Jazen believes otherwise.

On Rand, Cutler is using the alias of "Quartermain" and Polian is using "Hitchcock". Quartermain and Hitchcock are hunting with Otto and a hotel guide. When they get back to the hotel, Cutler makes a proposition to Polian. The Yavis will get classified blueprints of the C-drive if they do some favors for him.

After returning to Yavet, Polian checks on Cutler. Then he has a talk with Gill. The two decide to deal with Cutler without informing their superiors.

Polian gets Orion released from prison. In her effects, he plants a letter from Jazen. Orion sends two messages offplanet, one to Jazen and the other to Jason and Mimi.

This tale brings Jason and Mimi to Rand. Otto brings them the letter from Orion. They make plans to return to Yavet.

Jazen gets his message from Orion on Mousetrap. He and Kit have a dispute. He leaves for Yavet. Polian gets more than he expects.

"Mole Hunt" (2011) takes a Yavi crew onto Dead End to salvage the C-drive out of a crashed fighter. They run into trouble with the flora and fauna.

The next installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon.

Highly recommended for Buettner fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of special ops, dangerous beasts, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

Continues the excellent story in the Orphan’s Legacy Universe
By James Connolly
This is the 3rd book in Orphan’s Legacy series. It continues the stories of Jazen Parker and company, and involves events during a second Cold War between Earth and Yavet. What stuck out about this book were the historical parallels to the cold war, with lots of tidbits about the original cold war, spying + covert actions. It was a very entertaining continuation of the story, involving all of the characters from the past two books. I would say it has a bit less action sequences as the previous books, but made up for that by containing a great story. It actually prompted myself to look up some true life Cold War events on Wikipedia (The author instructed to look it up).

The Orphan’s series contains a well fleshed out, interesting universe, and I hope to see more books involving its characters. And like Buettner’s other books, it contains great humor and entertaining writing, making it an enjoyable read.

A Wedding, A Best Man & A Spy!
By KPBaudoin
This sixth book in the series escalates the passion and commitment of Aira and Aiden's bond to seal their love with a marriage. A sexy spy sent to observe the happy couple seeks Dylan out and their is instant chemistry. Dangerous events unfold before either can explore where that chemistry might lead them. This was so good! A little shorter than the other books in the series but not without it's dramatic climax! I can't wait to read the next book! I highly recommend this series!!

Fantastic Book
By Kindle Customer
This is such a great book, that I look forward to going back and reading this story again and I am impatient to read the rest of this series. Hot chemistry and tension filled scenes, a well written, creative and intriguing story about people with elemental magic, plus inventive, vivid characters, all on top of a seriously sexy paranormal romance. All of that is combined into this fantastic series and make this book a "must-have"!!!! I didn't want to set it down....seriously

Excellent
By Peejay
Aira, Aiden and Dylan have come a long way...from simply guarding her to Aira taking her place among the rulers. You would think elementals would learn to keep their hands to themselves. But no, even as the couple take their wedding vows, someone is planning to kill them.

The excitement never ends, and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the next book. Dylan needs to find a little happiness of his own.

A tragic love story set amidst the struggle for survival
By Cathy Murray
North: A Post-Apocalyptic Journey is the third book in G.P. Grewal's Post-Apocalyptic trilogy. At the start of the book Elgin, the protagonist in 600 Miles: A Post-Apocalyptic Adventure, is still alone and desperately trying to survive in a bleak and devastated landscape.

When Elgin meets Annie their loneliness becomes assuaged in a beautiful but tragic love story set amidst the struggle for survival.

The post-apocalyptic world explored in North is a dreadful place: in the struggle for survival most of the remaining humans have developed a deep suspicion and hatred for each other and the rare kindness of strangers is barely to be trusted.

North is a very readable novel and the voice of Elgin, the narrator, comes through strongly in an old-West, hill-billy style. This voice is consistently sustained throughout the novel and adds greatly to the originality and quality of the book.

The descriptive writing is vivid and real. The smells - stinks - are overwhelming; the taste and texture of some of the animals cooked and eaten are nauseating; the oppressive darkness of an unilluminated night is scaring.

North A Post-Apocalyptic Journey is a book of tension, drama, emotion and tragedy. There is a rare glimmer of hope in the final pages although, sadly, not for Elgin. Highly recommended.

I love dystopian novels and I found this one to be well written and tough to put down. 600 miles was very good also but I enjoyed this one even more. Haunting and compelling. I was deeply drawn into the life's of the characters. I highly recommend it.

Gritty
By Sean
So this is the second Grewal book I have read. I have to say I enjoy his main character and find myself hoping something good will happen to him. The man goes through a lot of hardships and I can't help but hope for a happy ending. I recommend this book if for no other reason it makes you thankful for what you have.

Jack Cloudie (Jackelian World), by Stephen Hunt

Jack Cloudie is a tale of high adventure and derring-do set in the same Victorian-style steampunk world as Stephen Hunt's acclaimed The Court of the Air and The Secrets of the Fire Sea.

Thanks to his father's gambling debts, young Jack Keats finds himself on the streets and trying to survive as a pickpocket. Following a daring bank robbery gone badly awry, Jack narrowly escapes the scaffold, only to be pressed into the Royal Aerostatical Navy. Assigned to the most useless airship in the fleet, serving under a captain who is most probably mad, Jack seems to be bound for almost certain death in the faraway deserts of Cassarabia.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the slave Omar ibn Barir finds his life turned upside down when his master's religious sect is banned. Unexpectedly freed, he joins the Caliph's military forces―just as war is brewing.

Two very similar young men prepare to face each other across a field of battle. But is Omar the enemy, or is Jack's true nemesis the sickness at the heart of the Caliph's court?

From Publishers Weekly
In the swashbuckling fifth steampunk-inspired fantasy in Hunt's Jackelian series (after Secrets of the Fire Sea), Jack Keats is caught red-handed trying to break into Lords Bank. He faces death at the hands of the Jackelian middle-court until he is saved by the might of the Royal Aerostatical Navy—which just means he'll be cannon fodder in the ongoing war against the Cassarabian infidels. Jack becomes a transaction engine operator on the Iron Partridge, the RAN's ramshackle, unloved prototype aerostat. Getting the ship to fly is the first order of business for a crew made up of misfits, convicts, and drunkards, and their mission, to penetrate hostile territory to spy on the Cassarabians new airships, is so risky as to be suicidal. Hunt combines elements of fantasy, genetic manipulation, and a large dash of Patrick O'Brien to form a wonderfully satisfying tale of adventure. Agent: John Jarrold. (Aug.)

From Booklist
Set in the same world as the author’s popular The Court of the Air (2007) and its sequels, but otherwise mostly unrelated to them, this is a rousing steampunk adventure in which two men, a young Jackelian small-time thief and a Cassarabian ex-slave, are thrust into an air war between the two nations. Although they are fighting on opposing sides, their experiences are similar (the story alternates between their points of view), and soon we begin to understand that the real enemies aren’t our two heroes, but the forces that are pitting them against each other. Hunt’s Victorian-style steampunk world is very well realized; he doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining its unusual technologies and cultures, preferring simply to show them in action and let us figure out what they are and how they work (the same way that, in a western, nobody slows down the story to explain what a horse is or how a rifle works). Steampunk fans should devour this one. --David Pitt

Great Action, but the wrong side wins
By TomC
While this is a passably good adventure tale, it has some disturbing undercurrents that ultimately make it into a tragedy - which I can only hope was what the author intended.

It is set mostly in and above the ancient and ruthlessly theocratic Cassarabian empire, which oppresses much of the world. Opposing that empire are two forces - the Jackelian empire (Great Britain more or less, and more or less the good guys), and what appears to be a vicious religious cult on the verge of taking over the Cassarabian empire and then the world. Tragically, the cult has chosen to seek power through the same means of oppression that their goals ought to cause them to fight.

The Cassarabian empire has incredibly capable "womb magic" - secret genetic science and technology - that allows them to produce strange creatures and radically modify human beings (often for purposes of torture). The empire deliberately chooses to turn slave women into womb machines to gestate their creatures, in horribly torturous conditions - even though a moment's reflection by the reader should make it obvious that they should have the capability to create mindless womb machines for that purpose.

So the empire is essentially evil to the core. Which makes it doubly tragic that much of the action occurs in the name of thwarting the conspiracy to overthrow that empire, and installing the "rightful" emperor as apparently the lesser of evils.

Since this is an adventure tale, it is forgivable that secondary characters are somewhat cartoonish - exaggerated in an attempt to make them interesting without giving them much actual depth. But the development of two central characters - Jack and Omar - leaves a lot to be desired.

Jack starts out fairly interesting, with solid motivations driving his bad choices. But for the rest of the book he is mostly driven by forces beyond his control. The one time he shows true initiative, takes a risk and saves everyone, he is whipped bloody in punishment - and it seems to break him. Barely resenting that injustice, he submits to the system and is eventually rewarded by being driven by circumstances to success and power. He barely even uses his vaunted technical skills - odd for the main character of a steam punk novel. Ultimately, he is mostly shoved out of his central position by another character that doesn't grow in any interesting way, but takes over the central role.

Omar is somewhat uninteresting, as - even with the reader's insight into his thoughts - he appears embedded in his culture, unable to ever break its bonds on his mind, despite the mental agony it creates for him. He does evolve from a slave mentality - but unfortunately only to adopt the righteousness of his brutally oppressive society and his new role as a successful and powerful defender of that society.

The most interesting and least adequately explored character is that of Omar's doomed love interest. (He loses her no less than 4 times through the story, each time arguably due to his cultural blindness.) In part this was of necessity, to keep secret the twist around which the story ultimately turns. But it says a lot that she ultimately takes her own life rather than submit to Omar's "love" for her.

I'll probably read more in this series, but mainly because it is an interesting setting, not because I'm hoping to see more of any of the characters.

Two good stories, short but sweet
By Joe Young & Rhonda Jones
Two short stories that were sweet romance with a touch of action. Tycho has a lead on another imprisoned God, through a tip a young girl left on the hotline. The situation is dire for both the God and the girl's pregnant mother. Plutus is also sent on a mission, but it ends up being more than the retrieval he thought it would be.

From Publishers Weekly
A sorcerer-turned-vampire wreaks havoc on Washington's Tri-Cities, causing death, destruction and a paranormal faceoff in the second of Briggs's series featuring Mercy Thompson, a mechanic and "walker": one who can turn into a coyote at will. After attempts by the paranormal community to destroy the malevolent sorcerer fail, Mercy finds herself pulled into the fray: though her werewolf and vampire friends are stronger than she, it turns out that Mercy's abilities make her the only one in town who can save them all. While she discovers the truth about her powers, she also learns more about her past, and the werewolves who raised her. Though the romantic subplot-involving two rival werewolves, Alpha wolf Adam and Mercy's roommate Samuel-fizzles, Briggs has a refreshing knack for imbuing her characters (even non-humans) with lived-in human qualities. When it gets going, this paranormal adventure story is engaging, but a flabby first-person narrative stunts the suspense.

From Booklist
Jalopy mechanic Mercedes Thompson may not be a were-creature, ruled by phases of the moon, but she can change into a coyote whenever she wants to. Because she owes him a favor, Mercedes agrees to back up vampire friend Stefan when he confronts another of his kind. But, being demon-possessed, that vampire proves deadlier than most. Before she can so much as bark, Mercedes is up to her ears in vampires fighting vampires, werewolves fighting vampires, and humans in the middle. She aims to off the demon-possessed vampire before any more killings, but she can't count on everyone who ought to be her ally because the local top vampire has schemes of her own. Briggs' world in which witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people is plausibly constructed; the characters are excellent; and the plot keeps the pages flapping. Those who haven't read the first Mercedes Thompson tale, Moon Called (2006), may well want to after reading the second. Frieda Murray

Not quite as strong as Moon Called, but still worth five stars.
By Rhianna Walker
Blood Bound picks up not too long after the first in the series, Moon Called. Introduced to mechanic and sometimes-coyote, Mercedes Thompson in book one we get to dive right back into her world. A walker raised by werewolves, trained in mechanics by a fae and friend to vampires and ghosts, Mercy's world is far from ordinary. Blood Bound finds her vampire friend Stefan calling on her for return of a favor from Moon Called (book one). There's a new vampire in town and he's brought a demon with him. From here the story takes off at a stop-start pace involving both the local wolf pack and the vampire seethe, even getting some of the fae involved. But it is Mercy's ability to speak to ghosts that is in high demand and eventually she saves the day.

With diverse characters carried over from the first book and a few new ones salted into this one there were no faces I missed. I look forward to more unique and enjoyable characters as the series continues. Her efforts to make Mercy a girl-next-door-who-just-happens-to-be-a-shapeshifter character who is a girl most readers can relate to are spot on. I won't compare her to other characters of books in this same genre because she tops them all in sheer likability.

As a native of the area Briggs' tale takes place in I was once again impressed with her knowledge of the region and pleased at how well she carried me back home through her accurate description of the simple things like the climate, local culture and real places within the area. The unique choice of location certainly adds to the story as cities like New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles and such, while all wonderful places, have been over-used in similar series. Using an area not widely known has given this series a refreshing change from the cliched and expected.

If you enjoy a good paranormal tale with vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts and the like that won't get lost in between pages of sex scenes this series is for you. While there's still a tantalizing love triangle element I appreciate that Mercy is a very real woman who doesn't sport a harem of Adonis-like fellows at her beck and call. Briggs never loses the story's plot in attempts to hook her heroine up with her heroes.

Supernatural tough chick Mercy is at it again!
By Snowbrocade
Patricia Brigg brings her coyote shape-shifter character Mercy back in this sequel to Moon Called. Mercy is a rare coyote shape shifter raised by a werewolf pack. By day she works as a mechanic in a world that has only recently become aware of the fae--who live on a reservation, and werewolves--who keep a very low profile. Vampires are still not part of the mainstream.

Yet Mercy seems to collect preternatural friends of all types, from her werewolf roommate, to her fae ex-boss and her vampire friend. When a demon possessed vampire goes on a killing spree, Mercy goes into action to stop him from outing the vampires in a very bad way. Her friendships and budding love-affairs with two werewolves are put to the test as Mercy resists efforts by the local vampires and werewolves to control her.

Briggs does a nice job of portraying a gutsy preternatural hero in a supernatural alternate universe. Her characters are appealing and lively. The writing in Blood Bound is tight and creates spine-tingling suspense. My only gripe is that I wish it were longer!

Second Book Book 3 on way
By Hugh C. Haynsworth IV
Ok, Mercy is a used car auto-mechanic who specializes in German manufactured cars. Mercy is also a coyote skin-walker. Her best customer is a vampire who drives around in an old VW mini-van with a Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine paint job, and her next door neighbor is the alpha-male of the local wolf pack, who she has gone out on a couple of dates with. Her room-mate is the son of the chief were-wolf in North America, who she almost eloped with when she was 16. Her ex-boss is a fey who calls himself a gremlin, and whose talent is working with metal and iron (normally poisonous to all fey.)

With her first book, Moon Called, we barely meet the vampires and fey in the Tri-Cities of Eastern Washington State. In this book, not only have the weaker fey creatures been outed, but the were-wolves have also outed themselves to humanity. Vampires are still unknown however; and the local vampire sidhe queen needs help stopping a rogue vampire who is a sorcerer, a human who has invited a demon into his body giving him powers over vampires, were-wolves, and fey. Can Mercy stop this sorcerer/vampire?

Part of what makes this book and series important is the look into the politics of the various supernatural groups in Briggs's modern world, and Mercy's struggles as a businesswoman and member of the paranormal community. She must also help protect her fellow humans, while struggling with her potential boyfriends, and helping all her friends whether human or paranormal. Briggs along with David Weber, Kim Harrison, and Charlaine Harris do an excellent job of this with differing levels of emphasis. By the way, I agree with Patricia Briggs that this 2nd novel is an improvement over the first novel, and I am avidly looking forward to book 3 which has been submitted to the publishers even as we speak.
