Really, really badly written

From the first couple of chapters I thought this book would be clumsily penned but at least interesting enough to entertain me for a few hours. The fog was interesting, I was curious to see what mysteries it held and hoped the author was creative and simply unpracticed at writing. Once I downloaded it and got past those first few chapters, however, I realized my gross mistake. The author is not just clumsy at writing, the story itself, the characters, are a study in everything a writer should never do. It read as if it had been written by a sex-obsessed seventh grader. To be fair, I was not able to get very far in the book before I had to stop reading, so I have no idea what conclusion was reached or if anything ever improved in the writing department, but I sincerely doubt it, and frankly I can't imagine that anything would be great enough to make up for the book's faults.

It was downright painful to read the idle, idiotic thoughts of the characters as they thought about why they would never do something, followed by a halfhearted thought to the contrary, followed by exaggerated and melodramatic action throwing them in that contrary direction without any good reasoning whatsoever. I kept getting thrown by the absurdity of it, the whole story coming to a screeching halt as I thought, "What? They did what? Why? Where did that come from? They were dead set on not doing that two seconds ago. This is too stupid for words."

The villain was equally painful. A girl with pigtails with spikes in them, who apparently attacks people by shaking her head at them. I am not kidding, although I really wish I were. This just about killed it for me all by itself.

Disappointing (Contains Spoilers)

I was really excited to read this book, even though dragons aren't a particular thing I'm interested in. Unfortunately, the story bored me rather quickly. I found Tressa rather annoying. When she and her two friends walked into the fog, I was hoping for something in there to explain anything. Maybe what caused people to "disappear" and never return. Aside from having no visibility while in there; the supposed "creature" Tressa and Bastion were keeping quiet from was weak. There was no confrontation with it or what it even was. With the help of a little owl that helped Tressa see through the fog ONLY if the bird was on her shoulder was so lame. But, seriously, when a dragon showed up and fell into the village, the fact that no one was really curious about it made no sense. As soon as Tressa and Bastion decided to have sex only moments after their "best friend" Connor was killed, made my mind up for me. I stopped reading and don't plan on continuing. This was a waste of time.

Cringeworthy writing overwhelms any redeeming features.

This book is awful. Two stars for the interesting concept but the execution doesn't live up to the idea. The writing is extremely cliched and has no subtlety or nuance. The plot slogs forward in spite of the characters' apparent lack of skills and means. Major events happen with no build up and characters change their entire trajectories based on a conversation or random suggestion.

I saw nothing in the description to suggest a romance element to the plot, but there definitely is one and it's the worst part of the whole mess. The author's attempts at sexy dialog are pretty lame and the internal monologues are even worse. To quote directly from the book, "A man sat atop the horse’s strong back, his legs grasping tight to the horse’s barrel, reminding Tressa of her own legs wrapped around Bastian a few short hours ago." SERIOUSLY? Seeing a guy riding a horse is supposed to be a turn on for the main character? Cringeworthy lines like that made me give up about halfway through. I did want to know how things turned out, but I couldn't deal with the poor writing long enough to get through the book.

I loved this story

I loved this story! I'm a sucker for alternate world tales anyway, but this one is very imaginative. A crew has gone to Venus on a study mission. As they explore, one of their own goes missing under suspicious circumstances (what other ones COULD there be on as harsh a planet as Venus?). There is a need to leave, but they all want to find their missing crew member.

After finding some amazing clues to the planet and the disappearance, the Captain makes a brave decision that risks his very life.

I loved the mystery and characters! I could not put it down and am looking forward to the second installment from this series!!

A fun sequel that can stand alone and is well worth revisiting in the future

In the interest of full disclosure, I got a free advanced reader's copy of this book in order to review it (but I'd have bought it to read after the release date even if I hadn't).

I read the first story in this series - the novelette Me, Myself and I (http://www.wittegenpress.com/wp_main/books/me-myself-and-i-dark-reflections) - back when it first came out in 2012 and really enjoyed it at the time (and not just because it was well written erotica, the premise was just so much fun!). So when Natasha announced she was publishing a longer sequel I was immediately interested in Dreams and Reality.

It has been long enough since reading MMI that I have forgotten many of the details, so I can reliably say that when Natasha says you don't need to have read MMI to read Dreams and Reality, it's accurate. All of the pertinent points are covered, fitting smoothly into the narrative so you never feel like you're being given a recap.

I know star ratings are a very subjective thing (spend 2 minutes on TripAdvisor and that's obvious). So giving some context, 4 is my usual rating for 'I really enjoyed this book'. What takes a 4 star rating up to a 5 is re-readability, and for me Dreams and Reality has that.

The main character is Tristan, an actor forced to face the fantastic reality that the imaginary world he portrays on film actually exists as an alternate dimension. Tristan succeeds as the protagonist on two fronts. The first is that in his own right Tristan is a compelling character, going through things he has already relegated to the realm of dreams and not only coping and succeeding as you'd expect of a superhero story, but having his fail-able moments as well. That right there makes him more relatable than your average superhero story protagonist. That's also what leads to the second way in which Tristan succeeds, the fan angle.

Not only can you translate Tristan's experiences to imagining your favourite actor set in the reality of their fantasy/sci-fi franchise and having to cope, but you can relate as a fan put in the same situation as well. Tristan doesn't see his role as an actor in ‘Power Up’ just as a job, he knows and loves his material as well as any dedicated fan would, gives a great deal of thought to the characters and their motivations, and that all plays a role in how he engages with the people of the alternate universe.

As fans it's often fun to imagine yourself in your favourite fictional world, but I think all of us know it would be harder to live it than is portrayed by Hollywood (one of my favourite bits of internal dialogue in the story is when *Mini-SPOILER* Tristan wishes he could get a training montage to speed things up).

That's the thing that really makes this story for me. Not only is there a fun plot - with enough questions left to make a sequel desirable, but enough answered it can stand alone - interesting characters, and intimate scenes that serve the story rather than distracting from it, but most importantly it's immersive. Tristan is the reader's proxy in the kind of daydream so many fans often have, and for that reason Dreams and Reality is a title that will be sticking around in my library for plenty of years to come.

Okay, so I don't write reviews despite how much I read mainly because I suck at it and it takes me forever and a day. However I really like this author and she doesn't get many reviews so here goes! This is the second book in a series the first of which is free and I would recommend reading it first or you aren't really going to get this one as it starts off pretty much were the last stopped. The blurb is a good summary of what happens in the book so I'm not going into a lot of details. What I think you should know, is this is a well written book without typos or lots of misspelled words. It's not a huge book but it had a decent number of pages to me and thank goodness was reasonably priced. I was surprised and pleased with how much character development the author fit into this book. The ending is complete enough to feel satisfying but definitely leaves room for more in this series. So if you like M/M romance, superheroes and kinda supervillians, action, and some hot sex I would give this book a shot. If you like the first book in this series you'll like this one. I myself loved this book and am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that the author writes more of these quickly!

This is a must-read series full of action, laughter, and edge of your seat action!

I loved the first book in this series (Me, Myself, and I). and the idea that fiction in one world could be the reality of another world. When I found out that the next book was out, I didn't even scan the description, I just bought the book. I am so glad I did! I enjoyed slipping back into the story of an actor (Tristan) who winds up in an alternate world where the characters from his movie are real, including the character he plays. This series brings a whole new meaning to falling for oneself!
The characters were well thought out and true to themselves. It was refreshing to read that even with all his newfound superpowers, Tristan could be honest with himself about who he really was. Seeing Devon begin to develop into a more heroic figure was rewarding and at times funny. I'm really hoping for more books in this series as I don't think their story is quite done yet!

Beautifully woven tale!

The story weaving in this book astonished me. I was really expecting the book to be very different than it was. I guess I had preconceived notions because I read so many para type books. This book, however, is unlike anything I have ever read. It was a cross between a family saga, historical fiction, horror and paranormal. That does not even do it justice, but it had elements from them all.

I loved how the author had "time travel" but did not allow themselves to get sucked into the normal time travel traps. The way the characters moved through time allowed the story to really develop and to be reveled in a very intriguing way. I never really knew what was going to come next, but as a new scene developed you knew it made perfect sense.

None of the characters were completely "good", which made the plot twists very interesting. They were flawed people, just like we are all flawed. There were times when I simply did not like some of the characters. I love it when read a book and actually care about the characters, even if it is in an "I can not believe you are doing this" kind of way.

There is some true darkness in this book. There was the "evil" of the book, which you expect to be evil, but there was also some human darkness. You know children were being treated horribly during different parts of the book, but you never get in depth descriptions of it. This added to the horror of it. That being said, if this is an issue that is too difficult for you, this may not be the book for you.

I am hoping that there will be a sequel to this book. I really would like to find out what happens next.

Stunning novel

Where do I start?

This novel is amazing: beautifully written, gripping, and un-putdownable (I nearly overran my journey to work via London Underground several times).

Vera Jane Cook has created a timeless character in Annabel Horton - literally. Destined for her soul to pass through time dimensions and to constantly face her demons, Annabel must save her extended family from the Devil's clutches. When I say extended, I mean close relatives, extended by several hundred years!

Running at about 137,000 words it is never tedious. It is, however, sometimes a complex matter to keep up with the family tree, but it is well worth bearing with.

At times heartfelt, always verging on the dramatic, Vera Jane Cook's novel is a masterpiece. When reading this you may find yourself questioning time and reality, but I doubt you'll question the abilities of this author. Five very large stars.

This book gave me chills. Following Annabel as she went from body to body, visited time periods past and future, and fought for lover and family over and over. This book is chocked full of action, magic and philosophy.

All through the book, though Annabel knows she is a witch, she also knows she is a Christian and that God has blessed her. She also spends a lot of time battling a demon who doesn't even have a bone to pick with her, it's a great aunt or something.

I will admit, while I adored this book I was uncomfortable with the idea that the only religions touched on were Christianity and Satanism (media's definition on that one, too). But that being said, it really did drive the story. There is such a stark disparity between God and Satan. It made the story so colorful.

As for Annabel, she is not without sin. She stole the bodies of innocents early on. Then she only stole from those she deemed "evil" but I think the problem in that is thinking she has the right to judge. The other mistake is working so hard for revenge over the loss of money in the time period she keeps returning to.

It's kind of weird. She goes all over, but there's a central progression to the story that anchors it. I liked all the characters - and truly there's not a complete hero among the bunch. Annabel has caused some of her own problems, and her children and grand children have caused others. It's not all on that demon.

The story also has some harsh reality in it. It's very well written, with a polished and professional feel to it. Yeah! Seriously couldn't put this down. I worked so hard yesterday to clean the boys room and do the house work that needed to be done...but all I could think about was when it was time to stop and pick up that book again! So yup, this one is getting 5 stars.

Captivating and enchanting tale....

Coming up with just one word to describe the mood of this book is difficult. There are light moments, emotional moments and mysterious moments, but I wouldn't characterize the entire novel as any ONE of those things. It's many things and has many moods. It's engaging and fun and adventurous and even a little scary and romantic. The Glass Gargoyle is everything that a fantasy novel should be and more. With faeries, minotaurs, elves, and a myriad of other fantasy creatures, all of whom are intelligent characters, there is a huge racial diversity in this world and it's clear that we're somewhere (perhaps some-when) else. We're kept grounded by the first-person point of view as well as the narrator's immediate world of universities and archeological dig sites as well as pubs and modest apartments. I can't wait to read it again!!

Unfortunately, her horrid landlady turns up dead not long after that, and she's not the last body Taryn has to deal with. The pace quickly picks up with alternating rescues between Taryn and Alric, Taryn's faeries getting drunk and into fights, and a mysterious artifact tied to the dig site she was working at. I thought the middle spun the same events a couple too many times, and some of the action scenes were so swiftly summed up, that I had to re-read them. I liked the banter between all the characters, it was hilarious, and they're all special and liable and diverse. I wish there had been some more clues about just what Taryn can do or who she really is. Luckily the next two books are both released this year, so I can find out soon.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. Very fun and it moves along, does not bog down in a lot of needless description.
I love the fighting fairies and Taryn’s seemingly endless way of trouble finding her in the strangest of circumstances. I admit, I said the same thing at the end of the book as Taryn did as I wanted more NOW. I am very glad the next installment will be coming soon as I need to find out what happens next.
Great read for those looking for a good paced book and fun fantasy story.

Definitely a Beginner's Book

The recipes look good, but I'm not sure this is a strictly Paleo diet - although eating grass-fed beef and organic fruits and vegetables are. I don't think that was clear enough in the explanation of why certain foods were on the list, but the recipes do include. Also, I disagree that the Paleo diet alone (or any diet for that matter) is going to make anyone "fit". Fitness has nothing to do with how much you weigh. Fitness has to do with cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and agility. A healthy lifestyle is comprised of both eating well and exercise.

Otherwise, the recipies are something I am eager to try out.

Tasty and healthy

I am definitely new to the Paleo style of eating, so I appreciate that this book talks about the diet itself and the benefits people have discovered by following it, as well as presenting recipes. There are lists of foods that are allowed on the diet, broken out into food types, and which ones to avoid (dairy and grains mostly). But you reap the benefits if you follow the Paleo diet to at least 80%, so there is some leeway, which you don’t always have with “diets”. I’ve only tried a few of the recipes so far, but the apricot power bars and pumpkin pancakes have been given a thumbs up by my family.

The benefits of Paleo Diet mentioned under section "Benefits of Paleo Diet" are amazing. I wasn't aware before reading this book that Paleo Diet is so helpful to our body. Moreover, the list of what to eat and what to avoid during Paleo Diet is very well explored. The recipes are mouthwatering, tasty and full of health benefits too. Paleo Apricot Power Bars look so beautiful and yummy.

About the Author
Anne Inez McCaffrey (April 1, 1926–November 21, 2011) was an American-born Irish writer, best known for the Dragonriders of Pern science fiction series. Early in McCaffrey’s forty-six-year career as a writer, she became the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction and the first to win a Nebula Award. Her 1978 novel The White Dragon became one of the first science fiction books to appear on the New York Times bestseller list. In 1999 she was the recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award, honoring her lifetime contribution to writing for teens. In 2005 the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named McCaffrey its twenty-second Grand Master, an annual award to living writers of fantasy and science fiction. She was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2006.

Menolly finds a life of happiness in the Harper Hall of Pern

Interesting to find out "Dragonsinger" is the fourth book in Anne McCaffrey's Pern series because I have always thought of it as the middle volume in the Harper Hall of Pern trilogy. In "Dragonsong" we met Menolly, my favorite character in the entire Pern universe. A musical prodigy who has been forbidden by her stern father to sing or play music, Menolly runs away and ends up impressing a clutch of nine fire lizards. But Masterharper Robinton has been searching high and low for her and having found her, brings Menolly to the Harper Hall. In "Dragonsinger" Menolly begins to learn her craft as an apprentice. The Harper Hall is not sure what to make of the island girl and her singing fire lizards, but Menolly is equally astounded by her new world. Menolly is one of the most enchanting heroines in fiction, mainly because the girl has not a clue in the world that she is so talented. After just about every test she is convinced she has failed, convinced that her only friend in the world is Piemur, another one of the young apprentices, and amazed that Robinton takes any interest in her at all. But it is Menolly's encounters with the other Masters, especially Jerint the instrument maker and Domick the composer, that stand out in this tale. Oh, and there is also Journeyman Sebell, who has also taken a special interest in her. "Dragonsinger" is a fitting conclusion to the story begun in "Dragonsong," and since the "next" volume in the trilogy, "Dragondrums," really focuses more on Piemur, this is really the climax to the story of Menolly. McCaffrey's conclusion is extremely satisfying and my only serious complaint about the Pern series after "Dragonsinger" is that Menolly has been reduced to a minor supporting character. One of the nice things about these books is that they are fairly self-contained, you do not have to read all the Pern books in order for them to make sense. I would think young girls who love music would especially enjoy reading these novels.

One of My All Time Favorites!

Dragonsinger is the second book in the Harper Hall Trilogy and is the sequel to Dragonsong. It starts right after the previous book ends, with Menolly arriving in Harper Hall a-dragonback. There she begins her musical education with the masters of music. Menolly always thought that harpers would be different and that she would fit in among them, but she finds that people are the same wherever you go. All of the other girls are jealous of her musical talents and do not want her living in their cottage. The boys insist that she has no place with them and her nine fire lizards make her stand out even more. Still, she is Masterharper Robinton's special apprentice and he seems to believe in her and to love her new songs. As Menolly struggles to find her place among the harpers of Pern she will discover much about herself, as well as the remarkable secrets about fire lizards and eventually find an honored place among the Harpers of Pern.
Even though I have enjoyed all of McCaffrey's books, the Harper Hall trilogy has always been my favorite. I first read this book when I was in junior high school and simply loved it. I have read my copy time and time again. McCaffrey has a nice, smooth writing style with great descriptions so readers will have no trouble visualizing the life on Pern. She also does a nice job of throwing in little recaps so that those who have not read Dragonflight and Dragonquest can still understand what is going on. I simply loved the world of the Harpers and think that any reader of fantasy will enjoy this enchanting series.

Cheezy as it sounds..a lifechanging novel of me.

I first read this book in the early 1980s when I found it in my elementary school library. This was the only time I have ever been justified by judging a book on it's cover! I devoured the whole series by the age of 12, and though I enjoyed all the books, this one stands as my all time favorite. There is real emotional depth in McCaffery's characters. Unlike a lot of fantasy and SF novels you can really relate to all her characters. Menolly in particular is as "real " a person as you can get in fiction. Her isolation and depression as a result of her neglect are all too common among young women everywhere. It is not fiction that girls are passed by in favor of men still. Her eventual rise out of her depression and acceptance of her own talent was encouraging to me as a creatively stifled young artist. When I had no Petiron or Robinton in my life it gave me hope. It has always been my favorite novel. I strongly recommened it. I am reading it again right now!!

Wow! I love it! Rosette Bolter has delivered the sixth and final installment of her awesome new series, Worshiped By The Bear Kings. And what a marvelous ending it is! The story is original, action packed, exciting, compelling, thrilling and romantic. The characters are captivating, fascinating, imaginative and sexy. They capture your heart and your imagination. This is a serial folks, so in order to enjoy the story, these books must be read in order. Here's a quick recap of the first five episodes. Beautiful curvy Jasmine Whiley has once again found herself in a totally unpleasant and 'unbearable' situation with her dimwitted brother, Dennis. Why in the world she let's him talk her into these things, she'll never know! So when her trip with her brother and his two companions takes a tragic and very dangerous turn, Jasmine realizes that she must sacrifice herself to save her brother - again! But Jasmine soon learns that the restitution demanded may be more than she can pay - or can she? Handsome Thunder Brad is not only a park ranger but also a bear shifter of the Uthuro Tribe. He rules as King along with his sexy cousin, Spike, and they share the same mate as their queen. When Juliet, their queen is viciously murdered, they demand restitution-a new mate! Oh my! Jasmine is instantly attracted and feels magically drawn to both of the werebear kings. But Jasmine soon discovers that her life is in grave danger-again and fears her secret may be revealed. There's a new alliance and a new deadly enemy that threaten Jasmine and her Kings. Arch Baron Gaspar Travis of the Ice Storm Panthers has kidnapped Jasmine. As it turns out, Gaspar's brother was the now deceased demon dragon, Quraal and Jasmine is pregnant with Quraal's dragon child. Oh my! Thunder has turned to lion shifter and former love, Lady Lynette Thistle. But all is not as it seems.....Lady Lynette may not be a savior at all. Brad is betrayed and is now a prisoner himself of the evil Gaspar Travis on Firebound Island along with the Uthuro, Stacey, Zane and the island's entire army of dragon shifters. But never fear, Spike and Dennis haven't given up hope and are desperately seeking help to rescue Jasmine and to do that, they need Dara's help. So...to get Brad to turn the chopper around since her baby was kidnapped by the evil Mage she kicks him in the leg? LOL. He was gonna do it but she like freaked out or something. Ok...what the freaking hell would you name a baby Grizzly? LOL. Are you serious right now? OMG. That poor child!

Anyways, I have to say that this part was the best of them all. Not sure if its because its the conclusion or what. Everything kinda came together for their HEA. I probably have been harsh with my reviews in this series. Reason being is she continues to make these same decisions in each of her series she writes. They all are written like this one. Her writing style needs to change or improve. This series is a 3 star at best. However, with all the errors through all 6 books it deserves 2 stars. I know she has a new series out about Dara and I really hope its better and improved. I sure as hell hope the sex scenes are written better. Those just really sucks and weren't scenes at all. There was nothing to them. No intimacy or even animalistic hard core lol. If your gonna write a sex scene write it and dont dance around it. Its annoying.

I did like the story line. But besides there being a lot of mistakes, there wasn't much details. The sex was boring. Some of the lines didn't even make sense. They should of told us to read Stacey's story first. I've enjoyed other stories by this author, and really wish this one was better.
