When a television documentary crew break through the cordon looking for a story, they find they've recorded more than they'd bargained for. Caught up in both a deadly conspiracy and a historical mystery, retired Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart calls upon his old friend the Doctor. An adventure set partly in the Second World War, featuring the Sixth Doctor as played by Colin Baker and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Won't leave you Glassy-eyed
By Jason A. Miller
Right off the bat, forget that this book was plotted overnight, and written in just three weeks by the former and current "Doctor Who" editors at BBC Books. In spite of the behind-the-scenes woes (shown here as spelling errors and details that change in the middle of scenes), the book is quite enjoyable.
As with any Justin Richards book, the story sets up slowly, each chapter introducing a new character and idea, or a new setting. "Shadow/Glass" opens as a UFO crashes near a RAF military base in 1944, and slowly works up to the present day. Neo-Nazis gather in England and Antarctica, using alien technology -- and someone who looks a lot like Adolf Hitler -- in preparation for the Fourth Reich (given how many other Fourth Reichs there have been in recent DW, this should really be the Eighth Reich...).
As the mystery unfolds, the retired Brigadier and intrepid journalist Claire investigate Hitler's death, and the Sixth Doctor travels through time and meets a war epic's worth of historical figures. Tension mounts and builds up to the showdown with the aliens, and Hitler's suicide in the Berlin bunker in April, 1945.
At the end, the book self-destructs, with a too-short action sequence and a too-stale historical reenactment. Because this is the Sixth Doctor, there's some forced angst literally on the final page, and the Brigadier makes an unusually clumsy metaphor to try and cheer him up.
But never mind the rushed ending -- "Shadow/Glass" is a fun mixture of time travel and authentic history that, in its best moments, summons up the thriving spirit of "Doctor Who" and makes for great potboiler sci-fi. Highly recommended.

A fun tale involving an old friend
By J. Surowiecki
The Brigadier needs the help of an old friend and that old friend comes arunnin'... albeit slightly bothered... at first.
I think this was a classic Doctor Who adventure. There really was no actual need for the aliens involved in this tale. It would have sailed along on its own merits with just the Fourth Reich group, a resurrected Adolph Hitler!?!(I won't spoil anything) and the time travel to WWII.
Both the Brigadier and Doctor are brought to life in this story. Although, neither this incarnation nor the Brig met in the original series, the conversations between them are just right. You can easily picture/hear Colin Baker and Nicholas Courtney saying these lines.
The solo trip back to WWII by the Doctor and the subsequent trip with the Brigadier were pure Doctor Who fun.
And I myself was not surprised by the ending. In traditional Doctor Who fashion... all the clues of what was going to transpire was there in the text.
A fun Doctor Who adventure! I can't say that for a lot of the novels I've read in this series. But I can on this one. Give 'The Shadow in the Glass' a try!

wonderful alternative view about World War II
By David Roy
This book is great, even more so because it was written in such a short time and yet managed to maintain that fun sense of adventure. Nobody will ever confuse it with literature, but if you want a fun read, this is it.
The Sixth Doctor meets up with the Brigadier, and hijinks ensue. Since the Sixth Doctor has already met the Brigadier in the book series (in one of Gary Russell's books), there is no need to have yet another initial meeting between the two. Instead, Justin and Stephen can get on with the story.
And what a story it is. Did Hitler survive the events of the bunker at the end of the war? What's going on in that strange house? Why has an entire English village been cordoned off since World War II? All of these mysteries come together in a delightful fashion.
Colin Baker *is* the Sixth Doctor in this book. I could see him perfectly in this part. The Brigadier is perfect as the wise old soldier who's still got the will to go on an adventure even though his body may not agree. The "companion" role is taken by a television reporter who is also well characterized. She's got a nose for a mystery, and it shows. What happens to her in this story actually surprised me, though it was almost poetic when I thought about it afterward. It's something that Cole and Richards couldn't do if they had been forced to use a real companion from the series.
There's also a wonderful use of continuity in this book. I love continuity as long as it's used well (for an example of how not to use it, see The Quantum Archangel). This book references both the series, a previous BBC book and also a previous Virgin book, which surprised me a bit.
This book is a lot of fun. Don't expect anything truly deep and meaningful out of it, but it's a nice, straightforward adventure that will make you smile.

A MYSTERIOUS KILLING

After years of waging a secret war against the supernatural, Marley Jacobs put away her wooden stakes and silver bullets, then turned her back on violence. She declared Seattle, her city, a safe zone for everyone, living and undead. There would be no more preternatural murder under her watch.

But waging peace can make as many enemies as waging war, and when Marley's nephew turns up dead in circumstances suspiciously like a vampire feeding, she must look into it. Is there a new arrival in town? Is someone trying to destroy her fragile truce? Or was her nephew murdered because he was, quite frankly, a complete tool?

As Marley investigates her nephew's death, she discovers he had been secretly dabbling in the supernatural himself. What, exactly, had he been up to, and who had he been doing it with? More importantly, does it threaten the peace she has worked so hard to create? (Spoiler: yeah, it absolutely does.)

Please go out and buy this book.
By Trey
I really liked this one. The author's described it as a pacifist urban fantasy, full of diplomacy, trickery and thoughtfulness and I have to agree. I enjoyed it from beginning to end, and I'll say the end delivers a plot twist I'd have never expected given the tropes of urban fantasy.
It leaves me wanting more and I hope I can find more books out there like this.
So, what did I like?
The characters. Marley and Al are a blast. Marley as the seen it all former hunter of the super natural. Al as her mundane nephew back from Afghanistan on a medical discharge. Also, the opposition. Because they live up to the old saw about the villains being heroes in their own heads. And I felt sympathy for a vampire and a werewolf.
The plot. Its fairly twisty, but not outrageously so.
The concepts. A sanctuary city for the supernatural. Vampire rest homes. The challenges of vampirism. How to deal with a werewolf.

A refreshingly unique take on the urban fantasy genre
By David R. Rich
"A Key, An Egg, An Unfortunate Remark" is a remarkable book containing many remarkable things: trolls, demons, vampires, ghosts, werewolves, a sexagenarian character who isn't automatically written as a bumbling technophobe, and much more.

I was a little worried, with the release scheduled so close after the Great Way Trilogy, that this book would be an afterthought — prolificness often fills me with a sense of dread in that regard. However, I'm pleased to say that nothing could be further from the case here. Having had the benefit of ripping my way through Connolly's oeuvre in a relatively short time, it's apparent that what he's doing here is a natural evolution of what he's been doing all along. The result is a book that simultaneously feels very much its own thing and a natural growth of what's come before, a spiritual successor to Twenty Palaces and The Great Way that is at the same time wholly unlike either.

The book is a delight from the first page to the last. If you're worried that a pacifist urban fantasy will inevitably be boring and unengaging, rest assured that a peaceful resolution is far more challenging than a violent one. Violence is direct; it gets things done, and done quickly. Peace requires subtlety, forethought, cleverness, and a healthy dose of outright chicanery. The book is also an urban fantasy mystery that takes the "mystery" part as more than an afterthought to be resolved deus ex machina in the last few pages. If it were merely character-driven, that would be enough, because the characters are wonderful, but there really is plenty of plot here, even without the casual body count endemic to the genre. In fact, the story succeeds so well that it makes the sarcastic-antihero-coldly-wading-through-the-corpses-of-his-enemies sort of urban fantasy feel lazy and uninteresting by comparison.

The characters, however, are definitely the best part. Connolly has a real talent for making even those with the tiniest parts to play feel well-rounded, fully realized, and intriguing, an ability he puts to great use as Marley and Albert go through a whirlwind grand tour of the supernatural. There may only be snippets of any given flavor of supernatural beastie, but a snippet goes a long way when the author has interesting things to say and interesting characters to say them with. Connolly cuts through the bulls*** at the heart of the mythology with a remarkable economy, focusing on the humanity and tragedy of each creature in a way that lays bare the flaws in our thinking about them.

And Marley, of course, is our guide for all of this. She understands and empathizes because she has bothered to learn. She is a phenomenal pacifist protagonist, full of both empathy and steel resolve in equal parts, not above bribery or trickery or threats to maintain the shaky peace she's built. Demographically, Marley is such an unlikely lead that you can't help but think she's a nose-thumbing at the genre prescriptivists who "helpfully" felt the need to diagnose the perceived flaws in Connolly's early work. It would be easy for such a character to fall comfortably into some sort of wise crone super-character trope, but she never does; she's remarkably human, vulnerable, and self-aware underneath her eccentricities and skill, and the moments where that humanity peeks through are among the best in the book.

For those critical of the Twenty Palaces books for their in media res approach to worldbuilding, you'll be pleased to note that Albert serves as our ingenue tourguide, asking many of the same expository questions we would in his shoes. For those who, like me, rather appreciated Twenty Palace's Ray Lilly's discomfort in a world he didn't fully understand, rest assured that the exposition that's here doesn't slow things down and leaves plenty unanswered, often in fact raising more questions than it answers. You get a sense of a much bigger, much more complicated world, but you never feel adrift or apart from it. It's the same sort of just-in-time exposition Connolly employed in The Great Way, and it really is expertly done. It also helps that Albert is well-developed enough to stand on his own, because, let's face it, Marley is going to upstage pretty much anyone you pair her with. Albert's development, complete with the stumbles and triumphs along the way, is a delight to read.

There are a few quibbles here and there. The copyediting isn't perfect, though it's rarely more than an occasional repeated or omitted word. Marley and Albert's investigation leads them to meet an enormous cast of side characters and I sometimes had to flip back a chapter or two to remind myself who one of the smaller players was. And the climax and resolution, while certainly enjoyable and unexpected, does leave a few threads of the plot in unresolved shambles.

All told, however, "A Key, An Egg, An Unfortunate Remark" is an astonishingly unique take on a genre that has a tendency to suffocate in its own formula, with novel and thoughtful takes on all of the established conventions and populated by memorable characters unlike any I've read before. It would be easy for such a book to come off like an experiment, a writer's exercise more than a reader's indulgence, but it's also a ripping good story well told. It is, by turns, smart, funny, thought-provoking, and touching, and remains engaging and fresh throughout.

Well worth reading for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy
By Max Kaehn
Urban fantasy usually comes with snarling showdowns between supernatural bad guys, often with big magical fireworks. This is the first one I’ve ever seen where the protagonist— an elderly woman with modest magical talents— is committed to solving problems without violence and has to work very subtly. The story is driven by a good whodunnit mystery that gradually unravels bigger and bigger problems, all the while giving us a tour of this version of a Seattle with supernatural hijinks happening behind the scenes. Overall, a good story and well worth reading for the novelty value for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy. It’s self-published (through Kickstarter) and has some rough bits that I think could have used another pass with a reading group and/or editor.

Five people are thrown together to quietly get to the bottom of an unfathomable event that must stay quiet. If the population of Terath becomes aware of the truth, it will spark a civil war. That war would pit the majority of the population against the powerful minority with the ability to harness and manipulate mana. The resulting cataclysm would decimate the population and tear apart the foundation of society.

The five people chosen for this must reconsider everything they thought they knew about mana, even as they learn to trust one another's abilities. They must embrace everything they never wanted in order to prevent the devastation of their world. One of them will be forever changed. Love will be denied, badassery will be unleashed, and Terath will never be the same.

Review

"Guardians of Terath: Seeking Sorrow is very unique. Immediately I noticed that not only is the writing style unique but the world, characters and plot are all unique as well." -Candace's Book Blog
"I truly enjoyed reading Guardians of Terath: Seeking Sorrow. The writing is excellent and I felt that it blended aspects of many beliefs to form a world and characters that really felt alive to me. My favorite is the Shiv I won't say much but let's suffice that being reborn, awe inspiring and badass are great descriptive words;) I honestly can't wait to see what comes of this quintet of characters."-Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock
"Imaginative and exciting Seeking Sorrow was an awesome adventure with great characters. The writing brought together action, emotion, curiosity and a little bit of magic for a very exciting and fast-paced ending that I didn't see coming."-Stephanie's Book Reviews

From the Author
Hi, thanks for checking out Seeking Sorrow! This is a very character-focused sci-fantasy book, and a good fit for an adult or NA crossover audience.

The main thrust of the story is  how society would evolve with abundant resources, including a resource that resembles what those of us on Earth would call magic.

Rather than a dystopian with heroes fighting to break free of something oppressive, this is more of a utopian, with heroes fighting against previously unconsidered problems. It's a reversal that has been very interesting to explore.

From the Inside Flap
Author's Foreword

Welcome to Terath, a world much likeEarth, with advanced technologies and humans much like us. Terathians werelucky enough to evolve on a world without environmental stressors like foodscarcity and life-threatening climates. As a result, there was never any hunger, homelessness, or war. There was no need to develop advanced weapons.

But what happens when a nearly utopiansociety suddenly realizes that it's unprepared for a crisis they neverconsidered? With sword and shield and bow, plus a natural resource called mana thatwould look a lot like magic to us here on Earth, a chosen few must worktogether to forge a new path and safeguard their world.

Welcome to their journey.

The Shiv rocks this story!
By Kara Lauren (karatheredhead)
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!

I have been looking forward to reading this one for over a month and it did not disappoint! Once I found out that Zen was another redhead like me I had to check it out! :)

This story was intriguing to me because it is about Mana. I play a mmorpg, called Ultima Online(it's an older one, before WoW), and mana is very important. However, it is even more necessary to the Guardians of Terath.

Zen DiPietro did an awesome job at building up the plot and characters. Once I got to the middle of the book, I couldn't stop reading. I stayed up into the early morning hours to finish it. I cannot wait for the next book. I am a fan now for sure.

I loved each character, especially the Shiv. I loved all the surprises in this book, and I won't spoil any of them. However, I did not see any of them coming, so it definitely was surprising each time! Zen described the characters so vividly I could picture them in my head. I loved Arc, his charisma never faltered.

This book had some violence, no sex or even kissing that I saw (Here's hoping for a lot of kisses in book two.), and just one bad word "dammit" if you consider that a bad word. So I would definitely recommend this for anyone 13+. I think male and females would equally enjoy this story as well!

The ending was great, but left me wanting me more. I cannot wait for book two to see what happens. I couldn't get enough of this story or the characters.

If you like YA fantasy(but really this book is for any age), awesome characters (especially the one with red hair!), and an awesome plot check out this book, you won't be disappointed!

Completely unique!
By Candace Robinson
This book is a sort of sci-fantasy. It has some futuristic aspects and it takes place on a different planet, but it also has some magical elements and some creatures that seem more in the fantasy zone. Lately though I have discovered this is a really great mix! I love fantasy but scifi I’m not always sure about. When you combine the two though, it’s fantastic!

Guardians of Terath: Seeking Sorrow is very unique. Immediately I noticed that not only is the writing style unique but the world, characters and plot are all unique as well. I happened to LOVE this particular aspect and it kept me anxious to see where things would go, just because I couldn’t really predict anything.

This is a character driven novel, at least I felt it was. But it’s pretty equally focused on all five characters. Which is not often done. This obviously makes it take a bit longer to get to know them, but it worked surprisingly well regardless. The transition from character to character was smooth and done in a way that I didn’t feel confused. It may have taken a chapter to get use to it, but it wasn’t at all long and I barely remember ever not connecting with the style.

It’s not often that I find myself almost giddy about characters. Like there’s just something you can’t help but really love. I actually felt this way about several of the characters and at first I was wondering how it would work, everyone was so nice and so agreeable and they all just got along so well. I really liked this, but how realistic is it? Well, we do start to see the other sides of the characters so it felt real, but I never felt annoyance and irritation at them.

I never felt like this book had info dumps but I still got a good idea of the world. And of course the author was clever and had characters asking other characters questions which made it easy to get to know this information.

There are some good twists in the book but the first one was kind of given away by the cover so it wasn’t as shocking as it could have been (apparently this wasn't even suppose to be a twist, interesting!). However, I LOVE this cover. Seriously, LOVE it! So I’ll deal. ;) I still loved how that particular aspect went with the maybe romance and well, other stuff that you’ll have to read to know.

So should you read this book? Yes, you should definitely read it! Be prepared for a slower start novel, as it’s not packed full of action off the bat. But for me, I didn’t care that much as I was enjoying getting to know the characters and world. Totally worth reading!

A great new fantasy adventure.
By C. J. Anaya Author of The Healer Series
There were so many things I enjoyed about this narrative, I hardly know where to start. Just a brief summary here: Two towns have literally disappeared, gone up in ash along with any inhabitants. A group of five people with varying gifts and backgrounds must band together in order to discover who or what is causing such widespread destruction before another town is obliterated from the face of Terath.

Not only is the plot intriguing and original, but it is full of luscious, captivating detail in regards to world building, emotional conveyance, inner conflict and dialogue. I learned a thing or two from the author about fundamental writing techniques that I truly appreciated and needed.

Anyone who knows me understands my obsession with strong female leads, and Kassimeigh is everything I could have ever hoped for in a main female character. She has trained and as a shiv, a kind of judge and peacekeeper of their realm where the discipline for her order strikingly resembles that of buddhist monks. On the flip side of this role, as adjudicator and peacekeeper it is necessary for shivs to be masters in the art of combat and Kassimeigh has some serious skills in that department. She is a well rounded character who uses her training to keep her emotions balanced and in check despite being thrown out of her comfort zone due to changes in her environment and changes in her relationships.

I related to Izzy's character as well. Having studied psychology and possessing a weird obsession for the social dynamics and interplay between others, I thought her insights into individual's emotions and motivations were spot on and so interesting to read about. Her quirky, teasing nature lent itself to some wonderful levity in the book. I guess you could say she and Arc were the plucky comic relief.

I adored Arc, and felt that his personality most resembled mine due to his genuine interest in other's backgrounds, thoughts and feelings. He's a real people person, affable and charming. I couldn't help but hope that something might happen between he and Kassimeigh.

Luc and Will play important roles in combat. Luc has the innate ability to control Mana, a powerful energy source on Terath. As a Mana wielder he possesses quite a bit of power. He must wield that power to encounter the person responsible for the devastation of two towns. Will is a blade and an incredible fighter who is coming into his own and learning to lighten up a little.

This isn't a romance novel, but there is romance present, something I enjoyed immensely, and the romance was very tasteful. I could easily give this to my teenager and feel fine about it. On the whole DiPietro has weaved an intriguing mystery where first impressions are not always what they seem, and bonds of loyalty and friendship are tested to their limits. It is enjoyable to discover just how each of these fully developed characters handle every challenge that besets them. I highly recommend this to...well...pretty much everyone. I can't imagine anyone not liking this well written fantasy adventure.

Incredibly creative...
By Ruth M Cohen
From the first chapter through to the last, this book held my interest in a continually stronger way. Written in a rich prose, the story line developed and emerged in a fascinating style, with twists and turns I could not anticipate. I was drawn to the main character, Babette, and found myself both impressed with and cheering on her sense of purpose---certainly not a weak female of her time!

I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive style of writing, and the dialogue was clean, clear, and distinct to each character. Although the book tied many ends, it also left enough with promise of things to come, and I look forward to Book 2 very much.

A MUST READ!!!
By Rebekah Callahan
From the moment I got this book, I've not been able to put it down! It's a BRILLIANTLY written, beautifully illustrated novel, rich in TRUE style story telling. The extremely talented G.D. Falksen pulls you in from the very first page with his every word. It feels very much like you're reading a classic novel with just enough of a modern-genre touch to keep readers from any generation hooked from the very first page!! I HIGHLY recommend this novel to ANYONE who appreciates not only true literature, that doesn't bastardize the English language, but a GREAT story that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let go through the last page!! A++! Well done, Mr. Falksen!!!

By far, one of Mr. Falksen's best.
By Kinzie Wells
I became a fan of Mr. Falksen through his first series, Hellfire Chronicles: Blood In The Skies, and I knew immediately that I had to read this book when it came out. I finished it within one sitting and have reread it twice. It's beautifully written, incredibly witty, and has an amazing balance of adventure, angst, and a well thought out love story. I've laughed out loud and sometimes garnered unwanted attention by my giggle fits that ensued by some amazing, and sharp tongue dialogue in this book. I've even pouted a few times, cried, and experience a severe punch to the solar plexus. The end of this book left me wanting more.

Mr. Falksen was able to merge a rich historical background with well developed characters. Each of their personalities differing from anything else he's ever published. To say that I'm eagerly expecting the second book in the series is an understatement. Buy this book, you won't regret it. The art parallel's to the gorgeous story lines adding a depth that most books lack. This book is perfection for those who have a sweet tooth for historical fiction, romance, and fantasy.

The adventure opens as young Jedidiah Reuel is forced to flee his home in north Georgia because of nature and relatives. Heading west he encounters interesting post apocalyptic characters, both good and bad, and faces the dangers of a new and primitive civilization. It's the world of Survival Apocalypse. Be advised...Though the chief protagonist is only a lad, this book is not presented as juvenile fiction. Jed is no Harry Potter. Much grown up action and adventure awaits. In the Survival Apocalypse series you’ll experience the romance of being a pioneer with all the hardship, challenges, and successes too. You’ll read about love, laughter, death most cruel, and a promise for the new future, post apocalypse. In the world I have created, scattered humans still manage to survive. But one bunch survives better than the rest, and that’s the residents of The Choccolocco Valley. How they did it, and why they succeed will be revealed in the books beginning with this one. You’ll find no hocus pocus or contrived material. Everything is as accurate and realistically extrapolated as I can possibly make it. Come enjoy this hearty series beginning with Escape to the Choccolocco Valley

Refreshingly different
By Amazon Customer
A different take on survival set 80 years after the apocalypse. Survival means hiding and sometimes killing in a brutal world of cannibals and preachers. Yes that seems unusual but its quite fascinating. It also reveals a divergent language and it's courageous to have a new style of speaking because the writer has to be consistent...this was achieved. Looking forward to the next one.

I read a lot of post apocalyptic books and was excited to find one that didn't just regurgitate the immediate apocalyptic event
By babytxblue
The story was a little slow and was difficult to get into. I read a lot of post apocalyptic books and was excited to find one that didn't just regurgitate the immediate apocalyptic event like so many do. It was refreshing to have a book that dealt with the survivors years down the road. Unfortunately, the book didn't quite live up to my expectations. I couldn't place my finger on it, but something about the author's writing style made some parts difficult to understand and retain.

Enemy of the Gods (Sons of the Gods Book 3), by James Von Ohlen

The whole of humanity lies broken and scattered.

More than a thousand years have passed since the Modi virus brought human civilization back to the middle ages. The Long War has finally ended with Torsten triumphant, forging the remains of the Coalition and his own armies together into a burgeoning empire. He is now the undisputed master of Veldt. But there are worlds other than his own to worry about.

The Eaters.

Like demons from tales of old, a new enemy has surfaced. An insatiable swarm of xenos monsters devouring everything in its path, including entire planets. One human world after another falls prey to this new danger, and Veldt has not escaped their notice. A huge alien armada descends upon the isolated world, driven by hunger and vengeance.

Time is running out for Torsten and his crew. They are faced with an enemy that could mean not only their own deaths, but literally the end of the human race. They must ply the depths of their courage and ingenuity as well as testing the limits of their will. A deal with the devil himself may be their only path to salvation. In this war there can be no negotiated peace or settlement. Against The Enemy of the Gods, this is a war of annihilation and there can only be victory or death.

Fantastic book! Really enjoyable, chalked full of symbolism!
By The Loge
I really enjoyed this book. It was a nuanced and original take on what can sometimes be a rather crowded and formulaic genre of fiction.

The protagonist's underlying passion for the esoteric and homoerotic was so skillfully conveyed while still appearing subtle really causes the reader wonder whether or not this character is in fact an amalgam of how the author truly feels on the inside.

Whether the books homosexual undertones were intentional or not they shine brightly and consistently through the pages as the author weaves a whimsical story of extraterrestrial contact full of phallic symbolism.

The massive black ships of the alien fleet which, much like a puffer fish, swell to many times there original size when aroused by the threat of a rival squadron. The ships proton canons that spew loads of translucent goo capable of rendering other craft completely incapacitated. The forbidden tall and slender onyx obelisks that denote extraterrestrial habitation of particular areas the discovery of which compel and obsess the protagonist almost to the point of madness.
These carefully crafted symbols are not lost of the astute observer.

I would highly recommend this novel.

A disappointment
By Dean Esmay
I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this self-published book, but I do like fantasy literature and the reviews were so raving about its groundbreaking and masterful storytelling I picked it up on impulse.
While the book was not horrible, I must say it was marred by plotting that was rather hackneyed and disjointed. Major events happen with little buildup or warning. The characters mostly seem two-dimensional. The language is often odd and strained, with weird word-choices (like "disgustingness," just for example). Nor do you get a strong sense of time or place that these characters inhabit--describing the world it takes place in seems almost an afterthought.
A love interest between two primary characters is central to the book, yet the explanation for how they fall in love is very disjointed and abrupt, and you never get a strong feeling for the romance between the characters, there's no buildup to passion. The sex scenes are also rather airy and vague and not particularly passionate.
I've seen finer fantasy writing by countless authors. Nor is the "twist" of a male-to-female character all that interesting. Although I've never seen that done particularly well except in comedies, I've seen it done better than here.
I think Ms. Hignutt has the potential to be a good fantasy writer but I feel this effort falls flat. Those who like the transgendered theme for its own sake will probably enjoy this, but those looking for a solid and enjoyable fantasy adventure for its own sake will probably want to look elsewhere.
Hignutt so far has not lived up to the potential she shows in this book. Interesting concept, flawed execution.

A finely wrought fantasy
By Sherry Russell
Diana Hignutt has written a finely wrought fantasy. Fans of good and evil thrillers will delight in this suspenseful confident and intelligent novel with artistic dimensions galore. The author takes you on an exploration masterly crafted with startling intensity and meticulously shaded in all the right places propelling you to read it at a ballistic speed.
I have to say that the thought of reading this genre held all the essence of a mud puddle for me but after being told several times about this book, I had to giddy up and jump in. Moonsword ensnared me in the first several chapters with a gripping energetical pace combined with a certain emotional signature from the author.
When your flesh is weary from the world and you can use a therapeutic cocktail, read this vivid tale blending danger, destiny, courage and balances. Well done!

Feminine Mysteries
By Audrey Ihrig
According to Druid prophecy, "a Demon will arise who shall destroy the world." "The Demon shall be mighty, but not indestructible". "He shall be killed by no man, and by none born female and by no one who is delivered in birth by a living woman". Prince Tolian, a warrior prince and heir to the throne is the only one who potentially meets these qualifications since he was untimely ripped from his dead mother's womb.
This book has several interesting motifs with one of them being gender identity. Prince Tolian reluctantly agrees to become a woman to save the world. Prince Tolian considers suicide rather than face the humility of being a woman. How can he face his father, the king? The prince struggles with the belief that women are inferior. As a man, Prince Tobian is given a love potion and falls madly in love with a Druid maiden. Still in love and now a woman further contributes to his melancholic state.

Prince Tolian realizes that to defeat the Demon, develop her magic and to lead her troops in battle, it is necessary to come to terms with being a woman. Success depends on a positive mental outlook. The author, Dianna Hignutt draws upon her personal experiences to handle these complicated gender identity issues.
The story is fast paced and the author's writing style makes for an easy to read.
Moonsword is Dianna's first book and this reviewer is looking forward to her next book.

Veil of the Deserters: Bloodsounder’s Arc Book Two, by Jeff Salyards

Veil of the Deserters is the second book of Bloodsounder’s Arc, which picks up as Captain Braylar Killcoin and his army continue to sow chaos among the political elite of Alespell. Braylar is still poisoned by the memories of those slain by his unholy flail, Bloodsounder, and attempts to counter this sickness have proven ineffectual.

The Syldoonian Emperor Cynead has solidified his power base in unprecedented ways and demands loyalty from all operatives. Braylar and company are recalled to the capital to swear fealty, and the captain must decide if he can trust his sister, Soffjian, with the secret that is killing him. She has powerful memory magics that might be able to save him from Bloodsounder’s effects, but she has political allegiances that are not his own. Arki and others in the company try to get Soffjian and Braylar to trust one another, but politics in the capital prove to be far more complicated and dangerous than even Killcoin could predict.

Deposed emperor Thumaar plots to remove the repressive Cynead, and Braylar and his sister lie at the heart of his plans. The distance between “favored shadow agent of the emperor” and “exiled traitor” is an unsurprisingly short road. But it is a road filled with blind twists and unexpected turns. Before the journey is over, Arki will chronicle the true intentions of Emperor Cynead and Soffjian. And old enemies in Alespell may prove to be surprising allies in a conflict no one could have foreseen.

“Jeff Salyards creates a vibrant tapestry of betrayal, intrigue, and brotherhood. In Veil of the Deserters, conspirators weave plots within plots in a land where memory can be wielded like a weapon. Salyards’s characters are bold and complex as they clash upon the world’s stage. The magic is refreshingly innovative. This is one you don’t want to miss.”
—Jon Sprunk, author of the Shadow saga

“Mix a dash of Lord of the Rings and the Riyria Revelations with a pinch of the Broken Empire and you’ve got a taste of the Bloodsounder’s Arc. Dark, witty, and full of wonder, Salyards’s characters scream from the page.”
—Tim Marquitz, author of the Demon Squad series and Embers of an Age

“Veil of the Deserters builds upon the promise of Scourge of the Betrayer, continuing Salyards’s unique blend of gritty realism, brutal action, and thoughtful introspection even as the story deepens with a host of intriguing revelations. If you’ve any taste for military fantasy, read these books!”
—Courtney Schafer, author of The Whitefire Crossing and The Tainted City

“Jeff Salyards continues to impress with Veil of the Deserters, second in his Bloodsounder’s Arc, chronicling the adventures of Captain Braylar Killcoin and his company of soldiers. Told from the point of view of a young scribe, Veil of the Deserters gives us a believable and brutal world filled with believable and brutal characters, dark machinations, and political intrigue. A fast, fun read for fans of gritty, well-told fantasy.”
—Ken Scholes, author of the Psalms of Isaak series

“Veil of the Deserters is a gritty military fantasy with intriguing world building and grimly dark magic, as well as complex, interesting characters.”
—Martha Wells, author of the Books of the Raksura series

About the Author
Jeff Salyards grew up in a small town north of Chicago, where he honed his writing skills, leaning toward stories that were loud, chaotic, and full of irrepressible characters. While his tastes have grown a bit darker and more mature over the years, he’s never lost his fascination for the fantastic. By day he’s a book editor for the American Bar Association, but he writes his own novels by night. Salyards resides in Chicago with his wife and three daughters, and Veil of the Deserters is his second book.

A rare sequel that actually manages to outdo the first
By Bob Milne
Veil of the Deserters is everything I was looking for in the highly anticipated follow-up to Scourge of the Betrayer. What Jeff Salyards has crafted here is a rare sequel that actually manages to outdo the first. The stakes here are bigger (and clearer), the world-building is taken to a whole new level, and the characters really come alive. Paced exceptionally well throughout, it also has the kind of killer climax that manages to completely satisfy, while still leaving the reader desperate for more.

In wrapping up my review of Scourge of the Betrayer, the opening book in Bloodsounder's Arc, I said:

"My only complaint is that this feels like less of a complete story and more of a first arc in a longer book, the kind of opening installment that catches your interest but leaves you wanting to reserve judgement until you know more."

Well, you can forget what I said about reserving judgement, and stop waiting to know more. Salyards gives us answers aplenty here, lifts the veil on the larger story, and pulls everything together in a novel that feels complete in every way. With the introduction of his sister, Soffjian, we not only learn more about who Captain Braylar is, but we begin to understand where he comes from, and what it means to be Syldoon. Their shared back-story is revealed throughout the novel, a few pieces at a time, and proves to be as complex as it is tragic. Soffjian is an interesting character in her own right, but it's in her role alongside Skeelana in exposing the reader to the secrets of Memoridon magic where she really excels.

Arki really comes into his own here, stepping up as a man, a fighter, and as a force to be reckoned with in the army. He still has a tendency to stammer and draw out his explanations, but he also has learned to stand up for himself against Braylar and the rest of the Syldoon. He even begins to develop something of a tentative friendship with Vendurro, which adds a whole new angle to the story, particularly in revealing a more human side to the old soldier. Most importantly, though, we learn the Captain's true purpose in recruiting a scribe, and see him play a crucial role in the latter half of the book.

There are some moments of morbid, gallows style humor to the tale that play well against the darkness of Captain Braylar's affliction, with his addiction to Bloodsounder getting worse by the page. It's that addiction which leads to a well-intentioned act of disobedience by Vendurro, Hewspear, and Mulldoos, and that simple decision to heal the Captain that proves to have significant repercussions in the story's final act. There's also some softer moments throughout the story, with friendships and the tease of a relationship rounding out what we already know of the Syldoon.

It's with the revelations of Memoridon magic and overall world-building where Veil of the Deserters takes the biggest steps in escalating this second installment to a new level. We get to see more of the wider world, including Sunwrack - home to the Syldoon - and learn about the deeper politics involved not just between nations, but between Syldoon Towers. It's that world-building that brings about the biggest twists in the story, and which sets up a climax that delivers more than enough 'wow' to make up for the more subtle end to the first book. It's an entirely satisfying conclusion, one that pulls together all the key plot threads in the novel, and which provides a stunning cliffhanger - physically and emotionally - for the next book.

Not that the first book needs to be redeemed or anything of the sort, but Veil of the Deserters puts that story arc into a larger context, and opens up the larger tale that Salyards has set out to tell. Definitely one of the strongest middle installments I've read in a very long time, and just an overall fantastic read. Highly recommended, especially to those who (like myself) came away from the first book wanting something more.

Innovative Magic and Fresh Characters
By Jon Sprunk
Salyards creates a vibrant tapestry of betrayal, intrigue, and brotherhood. In Veil of the Deserters, conspirators weave plots within plots in a land where memory can be wielded like a weapon. Salyards’s characters are bold and complex as they clash upon the world’s stage. The magic is refreshingly innovative.

This is one you don’t want to miss.

Perfect Sequel That Surpasses the First
By Mr. M
Last year Jeff Salyards came out of nowhere and gave us the amazing debut Scourge of the Betrayer, a novel that was one of my personal favorites for the year (review here). This year, his follow up novel Veil of the Deserters outs does his debut.

When Braylar's sister comes calling to bring him and his troops home at the behest of the Emperor, Braylar realizes that his plans are quickly running out of time to come to fruition and that he must return home and face the emperor. In the last book we didn't know much about the Bloodsounder, Braylar's possessed flail, but in Veil of the Deserters the weapon's mysterious creation starts to unfold and with its past starting to unravel we also start to learn about the world's past and why the gods and their chosen champions have left mankind. These new discoveries seem to be where the story's direction is headed and while Salyards is still keeping things close to his chest, it makes for a compelling read and makes me anxious to see where book three takes us.

Veil of the Deserters introduces us to new characters. Soffjian, Braylar Killcoin's sister and a powerful warrior from the mystical Memoridons. She adds a lot of complications to the story but also does an excellent job of informing the reader of the politics that are found in the Syldoonian capital. She is still quite the enigma but her insight into Braylar's past does a great job of letting the reader in on why Killcoin is the gruff officer he is. The emperor, Cynead, is also introduced to the story and we learn a great deal about him and the way in which the politics work between warriors and the ruling class. While most of the story regarding the emperor is told in this book, I have a feeling there is much more to come in the series.

Just like in the first book, Arki is the central character and he really comes into his own in the one. He takes a much more active role in the unit and also learns his real reason for being hired by Braylar's company. When there are battles, and make no mistake Salyards can write battle scenes with the best of them, Arki does his best to help out. To some extent the results are rather mixed.

Veil of the Deserters does what very few novels are capable of. Salyards has written a book that surpasses the first. The world building is taken to a new level and the stakes are even higher. While Veil of the Deserters doesn't really feel like a sequel, instead it has the feel to the opening of a much larger story. A story that I cannot wait to find out how it unfolds. I have to warn readers that by reading this book you will have a hard time waiting for the next book in the series to be released. I know I plan on pestering Jeff for a advanced copy once I know it is available. If you found yourself enjoying the first book, you are in for a rare treat as Veil of the Deserters surpasses it.
