Engaging and thought provoking!
By PD
I'm not normally someone who reads the science fiction genre; however, I found this book to be both engaging and thought provoking. After the first few chapters I was completely hooked! This author skillfully draws you into a realistic accounting of a nuclear aftermath through the struggles, fears and ultimate bravery of a young girl, Charley. A cryptic message of hope from a dying stranger leads her to discover unique relationships and an incomprehensible destiny. Once you experience this novel, it WILL leave you changed, especially in light of many current events. You don't need to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this book. Just be prepared for a great read that keeps you thinking long after the last chapter is finished!

From the gripping opening scene to the conclusion, The Last of Her Kind will capture your interest. It is a contemporary, fast paced tale that leaves the reader questioning how much could possibly come true. The story beings with a young girl, Charly, navigating survival in a nuclear winter. She meets a dying stranger with a mysterious message and then the adventure begins. Does Charly's courage change fate? The book is skillfully written with vivid descriptions and multiple themes, perfect for book club discussions. While some scenes are heartbreaking, others are lighthearted and hopeful. The story tugs at your emotions and intellect on many levels. I highly recommend this read.

Hooked from the start.
By Fitzran
This story had me sucked in from the start. The author takes us on a journey with her main character that is wonderful and chilling at the same time. The combining of humanity and the metaphysical is thought provoking, it left me asking questions of myself as these stories normally do. I think for me, the underlying message ......., well I'll let you decide for yourself what that underlying message is. I highly recommend this book. If it leaves you confused, wait a a little while and pick it up again, I don't think you'll be confused any longer.

The City of Man, by Brandon Butera

Why do humans exist? What is our purpose in life? How did we get here? William Natas, a Harvard scientist and professor, has been on a mission to change the world by answering these questions. After years of research and labor, he has finally solved the most complex theory in science, and with it, believes he can unveil many of the mysteries of life, including the answers to these questions. He thinks the answers have nothing to do with religion, and, therefore, sets out to eliminate the institution from the planet.  After he consults his colleague John Mandeus about his discovery, however, John is not excited about it. He fears what the discovery means for the world and what Natas intends to do with this knowledge and power. He argues that religion is necessary for the survival of morality and happiness in the world. He insists that, without it, society would fall apart.  Nonetheless, John's warning is not heeded. Natas releases his theory to the world, and all of the leading scientists back his theory, except for John Mandeus. As a result, John becomes the laughing stock of the scientific world and seemingly loses the battle of convincing society that it needs religion to sustain itself. Ten years pass, and the future is dark. John Mandeus was right about society, but so was Natas. The progress of technology and science has exponentially increased; however, morality and religion have almost ceased to exist in the future world. In the middle of this future chaos is Joseph Mandeus, son of John, who embraces this new world and thrives in it. Working as a computer programmer by day and thief by night, he has made quite a living for himself in the lively city of Miami. Until one day, a robbery goes awry, and Joseph's life is left in disarray. After reconnecting with an old friend, Julianna Danielson, Joseph is convinced to move back to live near his family in Indiana. In his search for reason in this future world, he slowly starts to understand why his father fought for his beliefs. Happiness still eludes him, but his life is getting back on track. That is, until he begins to fight back against the regime of William Natas, his father's old nemesis, to resurrect the war for his father's beliefs. When a presidential backing and limitless wealth make William Natas one of the most powerful men in the future world, Joseph finds himself in the middle of a power struggle that could cost him his life.

From the Back Cover
When he was younger, Joseph Mandeus never understood why his father, one of the leading scientists in the world, fought so hard for religion, an institution that the rest of the scientific world had decided to denounce. Ten years after the institution has been destroyed, Joseph has joined the ranks of the darker side of society, continuously falling into the moral abyss on his way to living a corrupt adult life.  However, a theft gone wrong forces Joseph to re-evaluate his life. In this search for reason in the future world, he slowly starts to understand why his father fought for his beliefs. Joseph reestablishes his relationships with his family and his old friend Julianna Danielson, and everything appears to be working out. That is, until he begins to fight back against the regime of William Natas, his father's old nemesis, to resurrect the fight for his father's beliefs. When a presidential backing and limitless wealth make William Natas one of the most powerful men in the future world, Joseph finds himself in the middle of a power struggle that could cost him his life.

Justin Kesselring's Most Ambitious Work To Date
By Wes Sillaman
The Envaryan Chronicles is set in a fantasy world and focuses characters from two different cities. The people of each of these cities, Envarya a city of immortals and Resint a city of mortals, do not know of each other except through legends. Cinder, a young man in the city of Envarya, soon learns of the truth of the mortals that has been hidden from ages past and sets out on a journey to find them. Meanwhile Trigger, from Resint, in his restlessness resolves to search for the mythical immortal city. Cinder and Trigger, with the help and guidance of others, must face perilous situations on their journeys to discover who they are and to uncover the truth behind the mysterious legends.

The Envaryan Chronicals is rich with vivid detail, fantasy lore, and spiritual allegory. The author has obviously put a lot of thought into crafting the story and the ideas that are explored in it. The density of all of the elements can feel a bit overwhelming at times but a reader willing to be immersed in the world, paying careful attention to the details, will be rewarded in the end. Fans of Justin Kesselring will find this novel to be quintessentially Justin Kesselring.

I really enjoyed this book
By Amanda o'brien
I really enjoyed this book, a vivid fantasy adventure with a deep connection to each of the colorful characters. I'm not a reader and seldom does any book catch my attention and hold it long enough for me to finish it. This is one of the few books that did not fall into the unfinished pile. I highly recommend it.

Very entertaining movie. Being a dad, I can fully relate to William Powell's character. He's trying his darnedest to manage his world, but it constantly gets upset by events that leave him bewildered.

Review

“A force to be reckoned with…a stirring tale of loyalty and love.” ―Publishers Weekly on Firebrand

“This new world is made more familiar with the return of self-deprecating Seth and his adored older brother Conal and their snappy dialogue, but a whole new younger generation makes the family drama even funnier.... The fairie qualities of the Sithe and the otherworld remain strong and compelling for fantasy lovers.” ―RT Book Reviews, four stars, on Bloodstone

“…ferocious tangle of family politics and passions…. Still, patient, persistent readers will be rewarded with a conclusion of terrifying savagery and reassuring precision.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Bloodstone

“Setting the stage for more conflicts yet to come, Philip's second series entry (after Firebrand) is a compelling tale of love and deceit that may have a broad appeal to fantasy readers.” ―Library Journal on Bloodstone

read the whole series, because this is the grand finale
By Jessss
This is book 4 and the final installment to the Rebel Angels series. If this is the first time you’re looking at this series, don’t start here, go back to the first book and begin there. It’s an action packed raging story that spans these four books and is well paced throughout. It will be life or death, victory or defeat, and survival for their souls or oblivion. It’s a chaotic realm full of shifting times and allegiances. Be certain that injuries occur, torture delivered, and twists abound.

Seth and his friends have to make their stand, and they have to overcome. For some the journey has been arduous and torturous. I don’t want to give anything away, but this series is worth a read. I will say that some of the vastness of the plot lines and multitude of characters was overwhelming at times to the point of confusion, but it works. I even know that there are parts that are easily predicted. It’s not a perfect story, but in a way it works for these characters. They’re gritty characters who draw you in and you can feel kindred with at least one of them.

Thanks to Edelweiss for the review copy!

Rachel Brackett is living on the edge, and the view is exhausting.

The lines have been drawn. Rachel searches for ways of setting her adopted family free of the evil caused by Telov's experiments. Winning requires nothing less than full cooperation from all factions, leaving Rachel and Leonardo to unite forces bonded by hate. In the search, Rachel uncovers truths more crippling than any she has known, and threatens all that she has come to love.

The war has arrived, and anything less than success promises to forever poison the beauty of the mountains with the stench of death.

Full of surprises with and ending you will not expect
By Cyn
This is the finally book in this series the author gives you as many twist and turns in this as she did in the last two. This was a really good series which will keep you turning the pages trying to guess how it will end. I have really enjoyed this series this last addition was full of surprises and might not have the ending you think. To understand you must read in order or you will be totally lost.

Rachel is still on the hunt to set everyone free and stop the research of mixing human and animal DNA. The war is coming and Rachel is right in the middle of it. She finds new information telling of her own background which will shock her and put her world in a tailspin. Her love for Leonardo is strong and growing each day. She will gain a lot but lose so much more.

Leonardo and Justin are still in a battle for Rachel heart. There is no love like that of Rachel and Leonardo. In this war many will die and others will live only to have to walk away and hope for the best. Leonardo stole my heart from the start, Justin he just didn't do it for me.

Shana Pennington-Baird did a good job of the narration. There were a few times I could tell that she had taken a break and come back to restart. There are no background noise in this audio and her different voices were good. I just didn't care for Justin he always seemed angry never was his tone soft or sweet. I really liked the other characters that she did they were good. A few voices where close to each other but you could still tell who was talking. Some were outstanding.

I do have to say I understand the ending but I didn't care for it. It just wasn't the way I saw this ending. The ending makes since and works well. This was a great series and some of the characters I liked didn't make it but with all wars some good ones must die. It broke my heart to lose some really wonderful hero's that I came to love. The author did put a lot of thought into writing this series. It was well thought out and written. I had not read anything by this author until I picked up this series. I enjoyed it so much I look forward to reading more from her.

♥ Team Justiz ♥
By Willow Star Serenity
I just finished reading Revelations. It is the third book in the Shadow trilogy written by RM Alexander. Rachel has grown tired of losing those she loves to the menacing scientists of Telov. She has decided once and for all that they need to be shut down. Can she find a way to shut them down? Will they be able to defeat the scientists? Will they learn to move on and heal?

I really loved this book. I loved the entire trilogy. I can easily say that it is one of my favorite all time trilogies. The characters are easily to feel for. It’s easy to see how much time and effort the author put into the story and the characters. It’s truly inspirational. There is a love triangle in the story line, but it isn’t dramatically overplayed. It’s subtle but obvious enough to know it’s there.

There isn’t really much that I didn’t like about this book. The only thing that I have a problem with is that I wanted the story to just keep on going. I wanted to forever be a part of Rachel’s life. I wanted to see how they rebuilt their lives. That’s just me though. Other than that, the author did a fantastic job with this book.

I fully recommend this book. I strongly encourage everybody to read the entire series in order though. Wouldn’t want anybody to get confused. Not only did this become one of my favorite trilogies, I can honestly say that the author has become one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to see the great things she writes in the future!

My worst fear was thankfully not even remotely realized
By SemismallChic
Wow! If you've read my reviews of VEIL OF SECRECY and DARK CROSSING, then you've already heard me cheering Alexander for her skills in honestly surprising me with twists and turns that I NEVER see coming. REVELATIONS is no different. From the beginning I could feel a change in the air, so to speak. I knew something huge was going to change between Leonardo, Rachel, and Justiz. My worst fear was thankfully not even remotely realized, though it came SERIOUSLY close! The end of this trilogy, that has had a gentle theme of romance laced among all the awful drama that is the SHADOW SERIES, is like nothing I could have ever imagined, heartbreaking in its selflessness, and yet perfect. Alexander's development of her characters is the only way she could have pulled off such an exquisitely pieced ending.

Whatever June Coffin says, goes—literally. And it’s not just because she’s a chain smoking rebel. As a Siren, June has the ability to force people to obey any command she voices. But in a world where those with supernatural powers quickly become lab rats for science, she’d rather look out for herself than fight on the front lines…until her similarly gifted twin brother, Jason, is captured by Chicago’s Institute of Supernatural Research.

To save Jason, June has no choice but to enter a hidden world of conspiracy, murder—and strange bedfellows—including a widowed paranormal advocate whose memory June accidentally erased, and a fiery paranormal separatist leader. Soon the lines between attraction and strategic alliance become blurred. But in a city exploding with paranormal crossfire, and her brother’s life at stake, June will have to face her inner demons and finally take a stand.

Good start to a new series
By Kahea
*** I received an ARC from Kensington - Lyrical Press through NetGalley for an honest review. Expected publication date: 3/3/2015 ***

3..5 stars

June, a Siren, falls under the category of paranormal but due to things that happened in her past, she has done everything she can to live a normal life, until she and her twin, Jason, get cajoled into going to Chicago and The Institute. Not long after they arrive things go to hell in a handbasket and June finds herself in the middle of a middle of a situation she spent her whole life trying to avoid.
June was an interesting character and I can’t say that I didn’t like her, but there were quite a few moments where I had the urge to smack her. She could go from being a snarky badass to a sullen teenager in two seconds flat, and her lack of edit button could be off putting to some, but I still couldn’t help but like her. She just felt real. While she was strong, she wasn’t a total badass all the time and her reactions to some things were pretty funny. I also found it interesting how little she knew about the situation in Chicago, but it fit since she has done all she can to maintain a normal life.
The rest of the cast of characters: Jason, Micha, Sam, Cindy, Muse, Robbie, Serendipity et al. All made the story fun to read, especially Cindy, They also served to give the world more depth because of the different roles they occupied in it. While this book/series is touted as paranormal romance, I’d classify it more as urban fantasy. There is a romantic element and a few sexy moments, but it’s not the main focus of this book and there are still a few things up in the air when it comes to that relationship, though I wouldn’t put it in total cliffhanger area.
Overall, I enjoy this book, there were times it dragged due to the authors attention to detail, which was not a bad thing and I believe others may enjoy it quite a bit, so I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next for the Siren and her cohorts.

Recommended to Anyone That Likes Paranormal Books
By Angel Hatfield
**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review**
June Coffin has what the scientists call a hypnotic voice phenomenon, or an invasive persuasion. June's twin brother's name is Jason and they are both sirens. June saw Micha Bellevue give a lecture at the Chicago Institute for Supernatural Research. She had been held captive there but broke out. June needed to get out of Chicago but couldn't until she got Jason out of the institute where he was being held captive. Micha was a paranormal activist but still believed in the institute. June is staying at Cindy's house while she tries to figure out a way to rescue Jason. Cindy's friend Robby is telepathic and also a powerful telekinetic. Cindy and Robby take June to see Sam Haain. he is the leader of the Paranormal Alliance. Sam has all kinds of connections within the city. Using an Oracle of Death, they are told not to go to the institute but to have him brought out in public instead and for him to get to Ethan Roberts. Ethan Roberts is the lead paranormal reporter for the Tribute. There is also the Secular Normalists of Chicago, a dastardly force that is spreading misinformation and blatant ignorance about paranormals.
I feel June loves her brother and is very determined to rescue him even at the cost of her own life. Yet she's also very attracted to Micha although she also feels guilty as his wife was recently murdered trying to help June and Jason escape.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. There are a lot of turns that June goes through. I like the way the book ended. I would recommend the book to anyone that enjoys paranormal books.

Great voice!
By S. Patel
This was definitely an entertaining novel. The thing that stood out to me the most was June's amazing voice (she's the only POV). The characters are well-written, the writing is great, and the story itself is interesting. There was a huge OMG moment about 75% of the way in, and I hadn't even realized I was that far into the book. A captivating book for sure.

Just so you know upfront, it's a bit different than most HEA's. June and Mischa (her 'love' interest) do get together at the end, but they were never really apart because for most of the book they were having a casual relationship. Their story ended on a positive/optimistic note, but their saga continues so to speak (I'm assuming this will be a series). And although it was a casual relationship, there was tension between them, making you want to root for them. Also, June is a very tough/rough around the edges character, and at first, I had trouble relating/connecting to her. I realized part-way through that I wished she had a bit more vulnerability about her -- something softer that I could've emotionally related better to -- but that's highly specific to me and what I look for in a heroine. Those 2 things are probably the only things keeping it from a 5-star.

I'd definitely recommend it for those looking for a different type of paranormal romance. Being that it's entertaining and well-written, it's worth it. It's a great start to what I'm sure will be an awesome series.

Fell flat for me
By Samuel Rafael
I begin to read “300 Rains,” by Heather O’Malley once before and couldn't get through all the wordiness, so I quit about one-third of the way in. However, when I began to see so many glowing reviews about this work pop up, I somehow thought that perhaps it was me. Maybe I wasn't in a good space when I attempted to read it for the first time, so I picked it up and began again.

Well, this time I did get all the way through the book, so I’m now writing this review only to provide some balance to all the “glowing,” and curiously, mostly very brief reviews that have been posted. I have long been of the opinion that if you have nothing to say that is good about a book, it probably would be better not to say anything. After all, a typical author invests considerable time and energy in telling their tale. On the plus side, author Heather O'Malley is obviously very knowledgeable about matters both academic and anthropological and her book is well-edited.

However, I found the story that was presented to be so far-fetched as to be ridiculous. Although the author has knowledge of gender variance, she included almost every possible element that could exist in a transgender novel, and put them all together in a long-winded and drawn out concoction, leading to what most of the reviewers felt is a highly moralistic and inspiring ending. Well, I beg to differ about the ending. I found it to be “much ado about very little.” I don't want to spoil the reading experience for those who still want to attempt this novel, so I won’t go into detail. I'd really like you to formulate your own conclusion, if you choose.

On balance, I feel that this book was a bloated attempt at a transgender novel that fell completely flat. Although the story held some promise, I did not like how it was “teased” out longer and longer, and I particularly did not like the ending. Perhaps this was so because I expected so much more after reading the views of the scores of reviews of the positive reviewers.

A Wonderful & Diffrent Story.
By Dizzy Littlestone
An interesting and different unasked for gender transformation story, with plenty discoveries and insights. A peak at what it is to be transgendered from someone who did not start out that way. While the transformation is unasked for and unwilling this is Not a "Forced Fem" book and all that usually means. Filled with reactions of interaction with family, friends and coworkers and his own feelings as he becomes a she. What does "he" tell people? Can "he" stop it? can "she" change back? can "she" live with it? How and why did this happen? It is intriguing journey as follow the protagonist's quest to answer these questions and more. All to the background of being a researcher in to aboriginal tribes and a university professor, plus all that entails.

Overall, an entertaining and thought provoking read.

the alternate viewpoint i hope will show some what it would feel like to be in a trans persons shoes
By Teresa M. Landreth
for an "Indie" novel it was quite moving to read, the alternate viewpoint i hope will show some what it would feel like to be in a trans persons shoes. I highly recommend this for anyone, but especially for someone who is trying to understand a loved one or friend who is trans to get an idea of what they are going through

Gritty. Action Packed. Full of Twists n Turns.
By Tony Healey
I had the pleasure of reading Fool's Gambit as an earlier draft, and then as a finished product in the Kindle Store. I am a fan of Simon John Cox's snappy writing, and fans of Confederation Reborn so far will not be disappointed in his take on the concept. Reading it, I was reminded of the imaginative works of Larry Niven, only with more grit, more action, more twists n turns. You'll love it. As I did.

I would recommend Rapture: The Big Daddy to anyone who likes ...
By Ismael Velasquez
I am worried that if there is a book per main character that this will dilute the plot arc. Fingers crossed I am wrong on this. Other than those small things, I would recommend Rapture: The Big Daddy to anyone who likes a novel with kick ass heroines. One way is given in this book - you keep a few good humans around who are willing to supply you when needed.

Nice short story, a little too short
By Amazon Customer
Rapture: Big Daddy was the story of how an emigrant family to Rapture became entangled in the plasmid trade. It was a good read over all, if a bit short. The story could have continued further to describe the main character's experience as a big daddy, but ended abruptly instead. Not bad for an adaptation from a videogame, though.

Great Mystery, A Superb Plot That I Thoroughly Enjoyed!
By David
I wasn't completely sure what to expect when I first saw this book, but the description looked promising. I decided to go along with the purchase and I have to say I was in for an exceptional story.

The author made me feel as though I was experiencing a completely new kind of criminal underworld that was wonderfully depicted by the author's own captivating and brilliant imagination. The plot is unlike any that I've read before and I was glued to the book the whole time.

I would suggest reading this if you can enjoy a mystery that will leave you wanting more or even if you just want read a great story.

This book took me on an immensely excited ride and I can't wait to read more by Dustin Brubaker in the future!

Avenues into the Future...
''Truth to tell, we're tourists, out to see the wonders of the universe.''

--Paddy Blackthorn, The Rapparee

Grand journeys among the stars--pursuits, quests, explorations and encounters. These were very much science fiction and fantasy Grandmaster Jack Vance's stock in trade, whether to have Kirth Gersen roam the Oikumene and Beyond tracking down his five Demon Princes or to strand Adam Reith on far-off Tschai. Or, as in this present volume, to take Earthstyle opera to the nonhuman folk of distant Rlaru, to study the much coveted treepod dwellings on Iszm, to follow the clues in five gold bands to the knowledge that lets a handful of races control all space travel in the universe, or to endure servitude at the hands of ruthless alien overlords.

Just as Vance sought adventure and the joys of a fulfilled life by travelling the highways and byways of his own beloved Earth, so he had his heroes and heroines do the same on other worlds. The five early tales featured in ''Grand Crusades: The Early Jack Vance, Volume Five'' take us on a fascinating selection of such journeys, showing us how the future was in the earlier years of his writing career.

And inevitably, as with storytellers from Homer to Shakespeare, Dickens to Austen, Tolstoy to Twain, our Grandmaster also used his craft as something on which to hang personal preoccupations, fascinations and longings. For as with any good writer, the completions and payoffs of these otherworldly travels often deliver more than just a satisfactory conclusion to the affairs on hand and a few hours' pleasant diversion for the reader. Vance also put us in touch with things beyond the page, delivering an awareness of a universe and a future for humanity filled with possibility, leaving us--as the best writers, artists and makers always do--with feelings of connection with something larger.

Five Great Jack Vance Novellas for a great price!
By ralph blackburn
The Early Vance Vol. 5:Grand Crusades by Jack Vance- Five exciting and inventive stories from Jack Vance.
THE RAPPAREE( also published as The Five Gold Bands), is a galactic treasure hunt with nothing less than the entire universe and especially the Earth at stake.
CRUSADE TO MAXUS, In a bleak future, overthrowing a harsh regime becomes a crisis.
GOLD AND IRON(also published as Planet of the Damned and Slaves of the Klau)Another take on combating an alien menace and freeing mankind.
THE HOUSES OF ISZM, pulp SF with an unusual pretext.
SPACE OPERA, bringing music to the stars was never so fraught with danger and misunderstanding.
All of these stories are, as the title suggests early works and all are novellas and some would later become novels. Yes, there is some of pulp leavings mixed within their pedigree, but that also makes these stories all the more fun to read. Most assuredly well worth the price of admission.

5 Novellas
By Manly Reading
Grand Crusades appears to be the final volume in the "Early Jack Vance" series, and it’s a departure from the previous 4 volumes, in that it contains 5 novellas in almost 500 pages as opposed to 10-12 short stories. Of those 5 novellas, only "Crusade to Maxus" is genuinely difficult to find: all of the others can be picked up in used paperbacks comparatively inexpensively (certainly, more inexpensively than buying this volume in print, for example - but that still won't get you Crusade to Maxus). All of these novellas can be classed as space operas, although one only gets there on a technicality.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of "The Rapparee", aka The Five Gold Bands. Its a nice little space adventure story, with an irritating Irish protagonist, that happens to have been written by Jack Vance. It is not, however, "Vancian" in any sense of the word - even less so than Vandals in the Void, for all that was written for a YA market. Originally this appeared in Startling Stories in 1950, which explains things to a degree: its very early Vance, and expressly written for the pulps at a cent a word. It may even have been written (or at least have a scene included) for a particular cover - go and google it after reading the story (or now, if you like).

Um. Well, basically we have an Irish thief - although he may be more, its never quite clear - trying to steal the secret to (warp drive) spaceflight from the descendants of the accidental inventor thereof, who are no longer "human" due to occupying alien planets (although of human stock, they have mutated or adapted in just a few generations so as to be quite alien). Amazingly, he succeeds, only to find the secret is a riddle hidden away across the stars. So, accompanied by a feisty love-interest (oops, spoiler!) he sets off to take the secret back to Earth.
Don’t worry if my plot summary makes no sense. The story itself is kind of like that too.

All you get here is an action adventure mystery story set in space with aliens. No more, no less. Its not classic Vance - hell, its not classic anything - but you wont damage any brain cells reading it, and you will have a little fun - if you can stop wanting to throttle the hero.

Crusade to Maxus is the shortest entry here, and the only one never reprinted anywhere. It’s a fairly bleak and muscular little piece, for all it relies on a bit of a maguffin in the end. It does raise some interesting questions about morality actually, but its hard to really cheer for anyone in particular here, other than for our hero, simply because he is our hero.

Gold and Iron (aka Slaves of the Klau, aka Planet of the Damned) is an early forerunner to Big Planet or Planet of Adventure, only without all the weird settings, just the various weird cultures all clashing together. In a first-contact future, Roy Barch is abducted together with golden-girl alien love interest, duly escapes, and tries to forge a weird coalition of fellow ex-slaves into a shared goal of escape offplanet rather than mere survival in a cave. The title here refers to Barch's "iron" will - and the drive and pluck of earthmen generally - and compares it the malleability of the golden woman of the stars. Its also very bleak.

To make up for all this, Houses of Iszm and Space Opera are both quite a bit lighter. Iszm combines some beautiful scene-setting in the titular tree-houses with some suitably exciting action adventure and intrigue back on Earth - but this is not a lot of the story per se. Its good but not great.

Finally, only Jack Vance could write a novel called Space Opera, and get away with having it actually being about an Opera company in space. Its full of lighthearted jabs at the artistic temperament, assumptions of cultutal superiority, Opera vs "real music" (ie the kazoo, which Mr Vance himself played), and in between this is a series of picaresque adventures on a variety of worlds, some inhabited by aliens, and, in one memorable case, a prison colony with a sideline in plastic surgery.

There is an almost incidental love interest, and indeed our protagonist, Roger Wool, is more in the nature of a chronicler of events than an action hero. Certainly he is no Cugel, but the structure and form of the novel otherwise has some parallels with The Eyes of the Overworld written a year or so later.

This is best read purely for the amusement it provides, which is considerable, but it is a short novel not part of a wider series (or, perhaps, even the Gaean Reach milieu). There are some memorable moments, but this is not Lyonesse, or Dying Earth, Planet of Adventure, or Demon Princes.
All of this is just good fun, with Vance's distinctive voice throughout, and all that should satisfy you for a few hours.

A worthy addition to your Vance library or a nice donation to the local public library after you have read the stories of course
By Paul F. Brooks
Grand Crusades - The Early Jack Vance Volume 5 (anthology - science fiction - 0671 - 01-10-2016)

Jack Vance (1916-2013) was a prolific science fiction author whose many notable novels have been out of print for many years. Subterranean Press has been reprinting handsome hard bound collections of his works and in 2015 released volume 5.

"Grand Crusades" includes 3 previously published novels: "Space Opera"(1965) - "House of Iszm"(1964) - "Five Gold Bands"(1963) aka "The Space Pirate"(1953) and two novelettes. A helpful editors introduction and a delightful cover illustration makes this book a worthy addition to your Vance library or a nice donation to the local public library after you have read the stories of course!

The Outcast
By azog
The author begins with an introduction giving a broad summery of his intentions for books in this universe. It helps understand what could appear to be a lack of cohesion between the various volumes.

While I did enjoy this book, I'm not sure I would place this at the top of my favorites for the series. The overall story (and tie-in) is interesting, as are a few of the characters, and I generally agree with the author's soap-box. But somewhere around 70%, I just lost interest. Hard to pin down exactly why, but I think I felt that the book was just taking too long to go somewhere. I peeked at the last few pages, which prompted me to continue on. Around 90%, my interest was piqued enough to get me going again.

Editing is improved. The notes I made were mainly relegated to punctuation, and more towards things like missing or spurious quotes, commas and the like. There is a frustrating use of the construct "nothing, but", used often enough to pick up on. One example:

"that nothing would be left, but a handful of low-tech worlds. She told herself that was an exaggerated fear, but in truth she didn't know."

The first "but" is a preposition, and needs no comma. It is followed by a restrictive clause, and bounded by a comma, is meaningless. The second "but" is a conjunction, which is where one normally uses commas.

I'm not one of "those" who debates the proper usage of "lain vs. laid" (which is just pretentious), but neither am I picking nits; incorrect or erroneous punctuation can profoundly change the meaning of a sentence, either becoming ambiguous ("Sameena stopped, dead"; I doubt she is dead, but rather came to a dead stop) or introducing nonsensical phrases.

The story ends with some interesting possibilities to develop, so I will look for another volume in the series.

Could not put it down!
By David L. Dunagin
While part of the Empire's Corps series, this is certainly a stand alone book. I could not put it down, the story line grabbed me from the first page and held me through until I finished it. It deals with a different backwater than the other books, and the main characters are the traders, basically tramp starships that carry cargo and people. Fleeing her planet she is rescued by such a starship and becomes a trader. A smart young lady, she sees that trade is collapsing and the empire is failing to protect the shipping lines. So, what can she do about that? And that is what the book is about. More please!

Through luck and pluck, a young muslim girl saves a sector.
By Gary F. York
While I have thoroughly enjoyed the preceding volumes of this series, the "coming of age" story has long been a personal favorite.

In a, "coming of age," story, a boy or girl encounters various trials and tribulations and, perhaps with the help of some good mentoring, learns how to be a successful man or woman. As with Heinlein's, "Citizen of the Galaxy," the young person is thrust into a culture entirely alien to their own.

Sameena, the heroine, flees from an extremely restrictive, Muslim, planetary culture, and is adopted by a family of, "Traders" -- who are very nearly libertarian anarchists -- perhaps loosely based on gypsies. Following Sameena's 'outsider' viewpoint, the author has the opportunity to explain elements of the Trader culture that would otherwise be taken for granted.

With luck, pluck, and determination, Sameena, through many adventures, grows to become, "The Trader Queen."

If you enjoyed Heinlein's Juveniles, or even, "Stranger in a Strange Land," odds are you'll find, "The Outcast," a splendid read.

NOTE: "Citizen of the Galaxy," was written as a Juvenile, with all the constraints that implies, "The Outcast" is in no way a 'Juvenile!
