From Booklist
Unlike many sequels, this one pretty much demands familiarity with its predecessor (Wolfhound Century, 2013). The story picks up soon after the end of the first installment. Vissarion Lom, a police detective in the author’s alternate version of Russia, is on the run with Maroussia Shaumian, who possesses the key to opening the Pollandore, a sort of self-contained universe that is breaking apart, threatening to seriously impact this world. Lavrentina Chazia, the head of the Mirgorod secret police (a fictional stand-in for Lavrenty Beria, head of the Russian secret police under Stalin), has her own maniacal plans for the Pollandore. Meanwhile, Josef Kantor, a power-hungry terrorist (and, it seems, Shaumian’s father), puts into play his scheme to gain control of Mirgorod. But a wild card, a fallen angel in a forest thousands of miles away, threatens to bring chaos. Higgins has created a compelling Stalin-era alternate Russia that is populated by sentient animals, fallen angels, and other fantastic elements; amid all that, Lom is a very traditional character, a world-weary cop trying to protect an innocent woman. An ambitious and fascinating novel, at least for those who have read Wolfhound Century. --David Pitt

Review
"Like vintage Mieville or Vandermeer, but with all the violent narrative thriller drive of Fleming at his edgiest. I fell into Wolfhound Century and devoured it in three days."―Richard Morgan

"An amazing, fast-paced story in a fantasy world poised dangerously on the edge of quantum probability, a world where angels war with reality"―Peter F. Hamilton on Wolfhound Century

"A dark new Soviet alternative history with angels...an alternate history that will grab you by the lapels and snap you to attention."―io9.com on Wolfhound Century

"A brilliant exploitation of the power of fantasy: the tender green soul of Russian history set free for uncanny battle with its grey, gunmetal carapace."―Francis Spufford on Wolfhound Century

"[Wolfhound Century] captures its world with absolute conviction. Mirgorod is a city of crumbling infrastructure and frightened people, but it is also a living, breathing, and very much vital place, that lives in its narrow streets and filthy river and in the overwhelming sense of cold that becomes more oppressive every time somebody shivers in daylight or huddles in a doorway for protections. There's brutality and heroism in equal portions."―SciFi Magazine on Wolfhound Century

"I absolutely loved Wolfhound Century. Higgins's world is truly original creation, Russian cosmos and Slavic mythology filtered through steampunk and le Carre. What really captured me was his beautiful style and language: his metaphors and associations flow smoothly like the waters of the Mir, and, like Lom without his angel stone, make you see the world in a new way."―Hannu Rajaniemi on Wolfhound Century

"A compelling Stalin-era alternate Russia ... An ambitious and fascinating novel."―Booklist on Truth and Fear

Better than Wolfhound Century?
By JPS
This book is the sequel of Wolfhound Century. Just like it, it is an intriguing novel that is a hybrid and a cross between a thriller/spy story set in a parallel world heavily inspired by the USSR, with bits of fantasy and magic (giants, a shape changer, a sort of vampire, unhuman beings and extra-terrestrial forces). A gruelling war opposing “the Vlast” (the novel’s version of the USSR) against “the Archipelago”, and which the Vlast is losing, in thrown in for good measure.

The war takes on an increasing importance as Mirgorod (the novel’s version of Saint Petersburg), founded some four hundred years in marshlands by the sea and where four rivers met, and is bombed by the aircraft of the Archipelago and besieged by its armies. The allusions to the long drawn out siege of Leningrad during World War II are rather unmistakable. So are the gruelling resistance of the city, spurred on by its entirely fanatical and totally ruthless commander in chief while all dignitaries of the Vlast have abandoned the capital and retreated to the East, similar to what happened when the German Army reached the outskirts of Moscow at the end of 1941. Another allegory, which is also carried over from the first volume, and which sits alongside the horrors of a totalitarian regime and of war, is the opposition between nature and the de-humanised and huge city with its bleakness and polluting heavy industries.

There is much more to this book than this, however, because it has a number of additional dimensions to it. One is a struggle between the huge and endless forest to the East of the Vlast and a fallen extra-terrestrial Archangel, who, unlike his peers who died when they feel from the skies, has survived for decades, is stranded on Earth and seeks to take control of the Vlast (at least to begin with!) to return to the stars. Mirroring this titanic struggle are a couple of others, with one quite rather awful Laurentina Chazia (the author’s version of Lavrenti Beria, the Head of Stalin’s NKVD, which is called VKBD in the book), Head of the State’s Secret Police, at the heart of it.

Again, the characterization is superb and this extends to the secondary characters with the author having a clear fondness for the destitute surviving aristocrats of the previous regime, before the Vlast came to power. The hero is still the secretive Investigator Vissarion Lom of the Secret Police and a mysterious young woman which has affinities with both the forest and the old regime. However, the heritages that both seem to carry and are rather unaware of (at least in the beginning) are not fully explained in this volume, with this being one of the hints that a third book could be expected (at least I certainly hope so!).

Again also, the author has a rare talent for creating specific atmospheres through vivid descriptions. For instance, the first few chapters paint a rather bleak picture of Mirgorod and mirror some of the ones found in the previous volume. Other powerful descriptions are the bombing of Mirgorod and the siege of the city and the suffering of its population and defenders, more generally, but also the description of the north-eastern part of Russia (East of Mourmansk) and of a secret and huge complex where unknown but essential researches are being carried far from anyone’s eyes.

Just like the first volume, this book is extremely rich in content and well-thought out. Unlike the first one, however, the ending is not entirely abrupt. While it may hint at a third upcoming volume, if only because a number of things remain unexplained, the author has this time taken the trouble to tie up loose ends. A well-deserved five stars.

A stellar follow-up to Wolfhound Century!
By MyBookishWays
Shortly after the events of Wolfhound Century, Vissarion Lom and Maroussia Shaumian are on a tram headed into Mirgorod, battle weary and all too aware that they’re being pursued by Commander Lavrentina Chazia, chief of the Mirgorod Secret Police. Mirgorod is on the verge of war with the Archipelago, and they don’t have a chance against their vast armies, but for Chazia, that means an opportunity to remake the Vlast just as she wants, pure and united under her. Her patience is waning, however, and she’s convinced the Pollandore holds the keys to her success. But Chazia doesn’t know how to use the Pollandore, and she thinks that Maroussia Shaumian does. Chazia isn’t the only one after Maroussia, though. Josef Kantor wants her dead, and he plans on remaking himself anew. He has grand plans for Mirgorod and his capacity for hard work is inexhaustible, his desire for utter supplication unending, if it is to meet his goals. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away from Mirgorod, there are diabolical machinations underway of apocalyptic proportions. In the forest, an Archangel is stirring, and it whispers to Josef Kantor, much to Chazia’s frustration, and she continues to use angel flesh on herself, in an attempt to connect to the ancient being, the only living angel, but every day, every minute, it drives her more and more insane.

I was blown away by Wolfhound Century, so does Truth and Fear measure up? Actually, it more than does, and as good as Wolfhound Century was, Truth and Fear is even better. Lom is a man whose only goal has become keeping Maroussia safe, and he’ll do that even at great, even grave, risk to himself. Luckily, he has an ally, in the form of a shapeshifter named Antoninu Florian who seems to have his own agenda, but proves more than useful in aiding the two fugitives. Maroussia is a young woman whose fate is entwined intimately with the Pollandore and believes it has the capacity to remake the Vlast into something good, not this burning mass of chaos and war that it currently is under the psychotic gaze of Chazia and Kantor.

When Maroussia is taken, Lom sets off with Florian to save her, and their harrowing journey will lead them to a glass city called Novaya Zima, and a violent, earth shattering conclusion that will change his destiny. In Truth and Fear, as in Wolfhound Century, Peter Higgins has created more than just a story. It’s an immersive and rich sensory experience, populated by giants, shapeshifters, earthy magic, and the power of ancient beings. Lom is a hero in the truest sense, in that he doesn’t see his actions as heroic, they just are, and they come as naturally to him as breathing. Prepare yourself for quite an ending, and the promise of more to come. The world-building is superb, and Higgins’s writing is, as usual, lyrical and sometimes brutal. I love this world, and I love these complicated, flawed, and utterly unique characters. I can’t wait to see what Peter Higgins gives us next.

Superior Fantasy
By R. Albin
The very good sequel to the author's Wolfhound Century. Higgins has created an original fantasy world drawing on Russian and Soviet history combined with elements of Russian mythology. The quality of writing is quite good, significantly above the usual level of fantasy novels. In this book, Higgins continues the thriller elements of Wolfhound Century while expanding the use of historical elements in combination with further articulation of the supernatural aspects of his fictional world. Significant parts of this book are inspired by the Soviet Gulag, the Soviet nuclear weapons program, and the Siege of Leningrad. The integration of historically inspired elements and the fantasy elements is ingenious.

As has become typical, Higgins is apparently aiming for a trilogy of novels. This is the middle book. Probably partly as a result of his intention to produce a trilogy, Higgins introduces some new characters and plot lines. While Higgins has not written "filler" pages and these sub-plots contribute to the articulation of his fictional world, the plotting is a bit "busy." There will be quite a bit to resolve in what is likely to be the final book. The likely final book should be interesting.

BOOK #4 IN THE BEST‑SELLING TAU CETI AGENDA SERIES.

A century and a half after the Martian Separatist Wars, and the final defeat of insane terrorist leader El Ahmi, Alexander Moore returns to the stars with the Sienna Madira, a United States Navy supercarrier spacecraft outfitted with advanced FTL and endlessly strange, extremely effective, quantum‑based weapons and remote sensing technology. And, of course, he's brought Marines, and lots of them. These are troops superbly trained for space battle, and equipped with advanced powered armor and artificial intelligence backup.

Moore's task: hunt down remnant weaponry platforms left by the brilliant, mad artificial intelligence known as Copernicus, the being ultimately responsible for the Solar System wide civil war. Yet Moore is about to uncover something far more sinister: before his destruction, Copernicus had established multiple mecha‑warrior defended bases with the intent of resuming the destruction of humanity. Worse, an a.i. presence even more dangerous, evil, and clever than Copernicus may have formed an alliance with something else out there with a similar goal: wipe humanity from the galaxy forever.

But those enemies will have to face a fully armed and equipped military task force led by a resolute general and his soldiers who know they are all that stand between human life, freedom, and progress—and the total annihilation of mankind.

Taylor's books and really enjoyed them all
By J. D. Aumann
I have read all of Mr. Taylor's books and really enjoyed them all, so I was excited to see this one come out. However, the slipshod way the story is told, the gaps in time and the lack of explanation around issues in the story make it hard to follow. The previous stories make little if any mention of the AI which took over the head of the Seperatists, yet now this is the main character and the story comes across as if this was something which should have been known all along.

It's very disappointing to see such a good story idea treated so poorly.

Shoulda stopped at One Good Soldier
By Josh
I loved the Tau Ceti trilogy and was very excited when I first heard that the series would be continuing. Sadly it felt like all the things I really enjoyed from the previous books were missing. I loved the solid dog fights and descriptions of ground combat in the other books but somehow this book while it did have some exciting parts, didn't really have those truly exciting fights. It feels like the technology was getting to the point where anyone could do anything now. I mean AEM suits can now do the puke and death blossom and their new QM abilities allow them to move virtually anywhere on the battlefield. Engineers figure out how to create shields that make the ships undetectable to sensor except for the fact they can still be scene with the naked eye and the same shields will bend missiles away from their ship or even turn lasers away. Why not just create AI controlled mecha, battle bots and clones to do the fighting... oh wait they do... It's like all the tactics and strategy the other books used and broke down for us just went out the window in this book. The closest we got to a tactical explanation is let's do the battle of the 300 in space and pincer the enemy using the secret goat path that equates to use just QM jumping in front and behind the enemy. That's pretty much how Alexander outlines their battle strategy. The 300 & the battle of Thermopylae on space... In the 2nd half of the book, it turns into more capital ship battles. I thought it would get better but think, Star Trek TOS type of battles with beam weapons that can just turn in space at right angles to make sure they don't miss. The mecha pilots are relegated to the background. I think more time about Diana Moore is written in sex scenes than she is piloting mecha. The characters we have come to know and love feel like they make choices that are out of character just to make sure the plot advances. Jack Bolan goes from Advanced ground recon to CAG to CAG running supply runs in his mecha to capital ship captain. Also sentences would be repeated multiple times in just a few pages. I lost count of how many times/variations of "Nancy could see why Dee liked the Seal" was used. By the time I finished this book I felt like it was all over the place, and I couldn't really decipher an intelligent reason for the main characters attacking a new enemy. We now trust Capernicus and take it on their word to attack another group because he says they are the enemy... These actions just don't fit the Alexander Moore we've followed through so many other stories and the supposed jumps in logic the characters make boggle my mind. I was seriously shocked that the book is a cliffhanger unlike all the other previous books.

Judge for yourself, especially if you already have read the first three books. While I hope the Mr. Taylor continues to write, I'm not sure if I'll be reading the next book in this series. Sadly I'm just not interested enough to see how things turn out... Though I definitely am open to reading something else he may put out in the future.

If you liked the first three books you should definitely read this fourth book in the series.
By Nobody Special
This is the fourth volume of a series I particularly enjoy. The story changes significantly with revelations that come in this new volume and this indicates that there is a good deal more to come taking the series in a new direction. Only fault I can find with this installment of the series is that the book ends in such a way that you know exactly where the next part of the story will pick up. It was still a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Blind Stud: King of Hearts One (Pulp Friction 2015: Altered States), by Havan Fellows

In a world where supernatural creatures openly exist, who can blame them for coalescing in one of the most fascinating and erotic places on earth? Welcome to New Orleans.

Laurant likes sex...

Maybe that’s an understatement, pleasures of the flesh are more than enjoyment, they’re a necessity. He’d starve without them. Problem is, he isn’t attracted to women, and in his family, if you get your sex from men, you’re the wrong type of demon. The (unfortunate) life of an incubus isn’t all orgies and orgasms.

That life is about to get a lot more interesting, though, when he catches sight of a lost and alone human who definitely needs his help…doesn’t hurt that he’s hot as the NOLA summer with just as many mysteries about him.

A stranger to himself...

What are you supposed to do when you blink your eyes and realize you have no idea who or where you are? Pretty sure the answer isn’t trust a sex demon with your life…all things considered that may be the lesser of two evils…

Wow Havan....Just Wow !!
By grammy1
Havan, again this year you have started out with a storyline and Wow all I can say is Wow !! The Pulp Friction team has brought us to The Big Easy, New Orleans for a very Paranormal Pulp Friction 2015 and I am loving it.

Tom Webb and Laura Harner had begun this premise a few years ago, world building Altered States. The rest of the team has jumped in and we are going to have a very interesting year me thinks.

Imagine opening your eyes one morning and not know where you were or who you are?????Worse imagine opening your eyes and be standing on a street corner, nt knowing where you are, how you got there and who you are?????

Laurant named him Vic at first for Victim as he saw him being harassed by another paranormal. Laurant an incubus demon feeds on humans for sex . He had been brought up by his kind to better let your food live than kill one every feeding. For a reason unknown Laurant felt the need to protect and brought Vic home. It was there guests arrived for the weekly poker game.

Only time will tell whose on first, but Havan gave us some of the boys we already know who were at the game and it was great to see Jet the were and Danny our cop working the odd squad. We have been invited to Spend a year with the creatures that go bump in the night…fighting for their rights to exist and protecting the innocents of The Big Easy.

I am so there….remember there Four authors. Four Series. Twenty books.
One supernatural finale.

Laurant gets his man! This story burns hot.
By Becky C
Imagine wandering around a New Orleans full of preternaturals and humans not knowing who you are or how you got there. Lost on Burgundy Street, a man finds himself in the care of a relatively young (200 years old) incubus and adopts the name Burgundy, or Gun. Laurant, the incubus, finds himself unexpectedly unable to dial back his affect on everyone around him, which causes wildly inappropriate sexual desire to run rampant. Hmmm. That might explain a lot about New Orleans. But back to the story...
There are murders going on that are being blamed on the supernaturals, which could lead to a war between species. Who is the stranger so talented with potions and why does he want Gun?
What would an Altered States version of Trivial Pursuits look like? Maybe the poker players will be playing something else this week. Fun!
I love Laurant. OK, that's supposed to happen with an incubus, but he's a great MC in this series. And just who is Gun?
Havan Fellows writes mystery with a twist in Blind Stud and I am so eager to read the next story in her King of Hearts series within the Pulp Friction 2015 series.

By Cat
For those that don’t know what pulp friction is. It is 4 authors that each write a series that the characters interact from book to book. You can read each series alone, but it really works best to read all the series in order for full effect.

Blind Stud is a great series opener. It begins with a mystery man lost and not sure even who he is. Laurant comes along saving him from a rude man, finding himself very intrigued by the mystery man. We find out a lot about incubi and their part in the paranormal world that is integrating with the human world.
I love the fact that once again we are served with a very intriguing mystery man. I also like Laurant a lot. If you have never read any Haven Fellows this is a great book to begin with. It really showcases her style of humor, mystery, intriguing characters and hot-man-sex.

If you like incubi, mystery men, a little mystery, poker, and of course, hot man-sex this is for you!

I had a great time learning more about Charlie and the world she lives in.
By Gatosqueak
The intriguing aspect of this YA dystopian is it's focus. Rather than completely focused on the main character, Charlie, and her survival in a destroyed world, the author does a lovely job of dealing with young adult/early 20's issues: relationships, grief, death, independence, and becoming an adult (reality sucks and rules, right?)

Charlie is in love (she tells herself) with the leader, Ricky, of the band of survivors that live in an army base/fort. Every day can be a fight for survival as the established group hunts for supplies to replenish their needs. Scavengers are deadly and lurking out to rob innocents and grief eats at the survivors. But sometimes the danger is way, way closer than Charlie will ever realize.

I had a great time learning more about Charlie and the world she lives in. I appreciated her sticking to her guns and morals while she becomes more of a self-assured woman. The post-apocalyptic world and its problems are realistic. Nicole, Charlie's rebel BFF, is an eye brow raising hell raiser but a good side kick to Charlie's steadfast and cautious nature.

Entertaining, enthralling, awesome character development and leaves you wondering what happens next. Must read!!
By Julie Holloway
Absolutely loved the first in the trilogy series by the remarkably talented young writer, Gabriella Wise. The story was very entertaining, mesmerizing, very visually well written. She does a great job of developing the main chacters in written description that I can picture each of them in my head. If you enjoyed the Hunger Games trilogy, this is a must read for you. There are some similarities (strong female character, life and death situations played out on many pages of this novel, serious world issues going on in this book). I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. Many of the scenes play out so well your senses perk up (smell, hearing, taste, bodily sensations such as the hair tingling at the back your neck) you feel as though you are alongside of the main character, Charlie. The author has developed and written the characters so well into the various chapters. I can't wait for the next two books to come out so I can finish the story of Charlie, and what happens next in her life. Very well done!!

A fantastic book! A definite must read!
By Taylor Hurley
This book is absolutely great! What can be better than a love story+an action story set in a post apocalyptic world? Nothing. The author uses vivid language that makes you feel as though you are there with the characters and develops the characters so you grow emotionally attached to them. I couldn't stop reading and at some points found myself was holding my breath waiting to see what was going to happen next. This book is the perfect mix of romance and action with a strong female lead to top it off. If you liked divergent or the hunger games this is the next trilogy for you.

The Terminal, by Jeremy Gosnell

Scuba diver Eric Rayner disappears while diving at Dean's Blue Hole in Long Island, Bahamas. Atlantis researcher Allison Chandley is approached by Italian billionaire Sergio Franca. USGS political liaison Walker Reade is studying a report by a young seismologist detailing a possible eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera. Each of these seemingly unrelated incidents is tied together, leading to an incredible journey back in time to the ancient kingdom of Atlantis. While following in Eric's footsteps, Allison is whisked away, pulled 70,000 years into the past to end up in the fabled Atlantis. She finds the kingdom in shambles and under constant attack by strange creatures called the Abaddon. When Allison is captured by the creatures, the people of Atlantis deploy an ancient biological weapon to destroy them. Eric and Allison must join together to find a control system called The Terminal, which can alter time and space. The Terminal is a stunning sci-fi thriller that adeptly explores how a past civilization could exist and what that existence could teach today's world. Jeremy Gosnell is a magazine writer and a long-time marine aquarist. He lives in the mountains of western Maryland and was inspired to create this story after reading Graham Hancock's writings on a pre-classical era civilization. His biggest challenge was "tying human genetics, ancient history, and seismology together to create a story that leads back to an ancient kingdom, written about long ago by Plato." He enjoyed envisioning a scientific picture of what Atlantis and its people may have been like. Publisher's website: http://sbprabooks.com/JeremyGosnell

I love when I pick up a book thinking
By Jason L Huff
I love when I pick up a book thinking, by title or by the cover, that it is about one thing and it turns out to (in the case, my surprise) be something different. I wasn't sure what to think about Jeremy Gosnell's "The Terminal", or whether or not I would even enjoy it. I didn't know it's genre, I didn't even have a cover to judge. Perhaps this worked in its favor. Immediately after reading the prolouge I was intrigued and immersed in the world of The Terminal. I also had no idea I would be reading a sci-fi action thriller.

The story is vibrant and full of energy. The author has created a world that is full of life and excitement that puts its foot on the gas and doesn't let up. It centers around a mysterious vertical cave in the Bahamas that is strangely calling people to it and an impending cataclysmic event happening in Yellowstone National Park. The story switches viewpoints of several characters, all of which come to life brilliantly, each in their own non-related events. What lurks beneath Dean's Blue Hole near Long Island, Bahamas? What is the Terminal? and Is the world nearing another extinction-level event? And how do they all relate to one-another.

At first, I had a time trying to figure out how things were connected, but eventually we get to the connection and from that point on I couldn't read fast enough. The Terminal is fascinating, blending real-life fact with science fiction creating a believable space to which the characters and scenes create a vivid scene in your mind's eye. You want to know what the motives are for people being attracted to Dean's Blue Hole, and what exactly is the relationship between it and this impending disaster. I would even go so far as to put it on the scale with some of the better disaster movies I've seen.

The author is quite knowledgeable about the subject matter and uses quite a few technical terms, which I didn't always understand. However, it didn't detract from the intensity in which the story was drawing me in. Gosnell does a great job at exploring human-nature and their struggle between self-preservation and the need to want to help others survive. The reader spends a lot of time flip-flopping between locations which can be disorienting but eventually are sucked into the story, eagerly wanting to know the fate of the characters. The non-fictional elements make this story believable and allows for the fictional elements to take hold of the imagination more easily. The Terminal uses science fiction elements and mysterious events to tie together a well thought out and intriguing story.

If you are looking for a good action-thriller with sci-fi elements, then this is a book you should read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, licking up each page and thirsty for more. It had all the elements I love about reading, great characters, fast action, building up to a great climax. The Terminal delivers on all fronts.

Momentous
By Merrick Hansen
Gosnell opens The Terminal with an intriguing scene – a diver, on the verge of some new deep sea discovery in a fact-based deep blue hole. (There are actually these types of things around the world and they frighten me. Anything could be down there.) Gosnell takes a factual phenomena and speculates – what could be down there? Or in this case, who? Now, imagine that in one of these deep blue holes, we find a link to a lost city.

The description itself is rather bland compared to the actual story. Jeremy Gosnell has honestly written a spectacular Vernian-inspired science fiction tale. I don’t want to give away key plot points but holy cow did this guy keep me reading. Not only does he have an amazing and original idea here, but he tells this story in a way that feels like it could be plausible with a few tweaks in reality (very minor tweaks).

The ocean is largely unexplored. Human curiosity has no limit but our technology currently does – but Gosnell plays on this curiosity in such a way as to make me feel like I did when I read my first Jules Verne novel. (See: full of awe and possibility.) He also examines human nature and the directions it takes us in. He turns a mirror on us and shows us what we could become, given our current treatment of the world around us.

{My Thoughts} – I’m not sure where to begin with this book. It was a different kind of read that was more out of my element then usual.

It starts off talking about a subadiver named Eric that disappeared. Then jumped into talking about a researcher named Allison that wanted to prove alien life had somehow helped to develop the Lost City of Atlantis. Anyways, it was a bit out there, and there were like three stories taking place throughout the entire book, at one point four stories.

Towards the end of the book the author found a beautiful way to tie it all together. It was wrapped up nicely with a pretty bow, it even left room for a possible sequel if they’d be interested in writing one.

I was unsure of my thoughts throughout most of the book. However, I did have a high desire to find out what was going to happen through the story line and was able to finish it in a timely manner because I had been pulled into the pages. I absolutely enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more by this particular author in the near future.

~~After the Time Before~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
Book 1 of this trilogy offers a refreshing twist on life after an apocalyptic event. Taking place 322 years after an apocalypse, Ashley finds herself always questioning the 'whys' of everything! The Elders are the governing body of the Island which is located in the NW part of the country. Jobs are assigned to the nearly one thousand residents around the age of thirteen. Mason and Ashley have been friends since their time in school. As a result of a death, both of their futures change dramatically. That is the backdrop for this most interesting and intriguing story.

There is a lot of undercurrent running under the surface of the main plot. There are questions of faith, good versus evil and the promise of hope surfaces more than once. Several parts really impressed me and one was the 'hierarchy' that the Elders strived to attain. The most impressive to me was the fact that the author somehow managed to come up with an absolutely new twist on life after an apocalypse. I call this after the time before! Dare I say 'Oh Ashby'?

This is a well written novel with characters that blend well together, the plot is well defined and the ending leaves the reader waiting for the next book. Lots of unanswered questions for the reader to ponder for the next few months.

Most highly recommended.

Another winner!

This is Stephanie Erickson' s fourth book and she just keeps getting better and, better. This story takes place 322 years after the end of civilization. A small group of survivors live on a small island off the coast. They are ruled by a group of Elders who dictate what everyone does and who they are matched with. Ashley is a girl who has been matched with a man who is next in line to be an Elder. She also is curious about everything and questions everything. The Elders aren't happy with all the questions. They like to keep secrets from everyone. But Ashley is very, very curious about the mainland. Is it still there or is it gone, as the Elders would have you believe. If it still exists, are there people there? Wandering around the island she finds that the Elders have been hiding a canoe, two actually. So she and her friend Mason take off to find the mainland.

There's a lot more to the story than that but I don't want to give anything away. I loved this book! The characters came alive. The twists and turns kept me on my toes. I was constantly saying to myself "didn't see that coming". I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, a little sci fi, and surprises. My one complaint is that September is so far away. Write faster Stephanie!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
So post post apocalyptic books really are not my thing, but the description of the book caught my attention. I was sucked into the book within the first few chapters, and really enjoyed the characters, the writing style was great and the author did a great job of explaining what was going on. The book kept me in suspense and the plot twists, well let’s just say that you will not see what’s coming, coming! Just when you think you figure it out, plot twist! I will be awaiting the next books in the series.
