Wonderful Second Entry in the Series

There is an interesting line in Jeb Kinnison’s new novel, Nemo’s World: The Substrate Wars 2: “The reward for succeeding is more work.” Kinnison wrote a terrific sci-fi dystopian novel, The Red Queen. His reward for this success was writing the next novel in the series, Nemo’s World. Kinninson’s hard work paid off in the form of a wonderful and engaging sequel that anyone who is a fan of speculative fiction, particularly science fiction/dystopian fiction, will enjoy.

Spoilers Ahead***
The novel picks up immediately after the events of The Red Queen. The students, along with a few older advisors, have escaped Earth, but the major governments on the planet are working to duplicate the technology and create more quantum gateways. They need to hunt down the rebels to stop the spread of the new technology. The governments are afraid that readily available gateways will open up a million habitable planets for colonization. Once people leave the Earth, the established governments will lose control (and power).

As the US government draws ever closer to making its own gateway, it fights the rebels with a propaganda campaign designed to make them appear to be terrorists. But the rebels are not without resources of their own, and soon the President and the security agents find themselves under surveillance by the very technology they created.

I read this novel in one sitting—something I do not always do—but every time I thought about putting it down, I wanted to find out what happened next. It is the type of book where you start thinking “I’ll just read a few pages more,” and then realize that another hour has passed and you are almost at the end, so you can’t quit now. I really wanted to find out about the wedding between two of the main characters, the baby in the works (so to speak), and the results of the court case as well as the outcome of the rebellion, the near civil war, and if the new colonies will succeed or if the attacks from Earth will destroy them.

I think that everyone who enjoyed The Red Queen ill agree that Nemo’s World is just as interesting as the first novel. Like the first novel, I really enjoyed the A.I. (artificial intelligence) chapters and laughed out loud where they start using humor. There is something wonderful about one A.I. “dissing” another one with the expression “your momma.”   This is a five-star enjoyable read!

The Substrate Wars Continue….

The author says it best in this line; “Pride is useless when thugs are running the government. Between the ones that want to save you and the ones that want to bleed you, there’s no room left for living.”

All any of us want is the power to take back our freedoms from the do-gooders and evil that have taken it away from us.

Now, imagine a world where we can be taken away from repressive governments and societies and give humanity a new start without a great deal of bloodshed, death and chaos.

The author has constructed a world where this is possible and how it’s done can either be used for good or evil but the bad guys and gals are trying their best to get their hands on it. The trials and tribulations are well drawn out with interesting characters and realistic scenarios that keep you drawn into the story. Footnotes provide links to places where the reader can learn about things that they may not know about.

It is tightly written, well-constructed and very interesting. It also made my heart ache that something like the scenarios explored by this book aren’t already in existence spreading freedom throughout the world.

Am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

Red Queen on Steroids

A great sequel. Action starts right off, and doesn't stop until the last page. Often times the sequel is a little less, and frankly, when I started this one, my thought was after all the clever ideas in Red Queen, there couldn't be a lot left, just plot/character development...

I was wrong. This volume takes off from the ending of Red Queen, and fully fleshes out the skeleton of ideas from the first volume. You start out wondering how they could possibly make things work, and they succeed. Great expansion of both the hard science and the social science, epic struggle between Darkness and Light, and just enough teases to make you eager for the next installment.

Must read!

Loved it!

It's hard to review this book because I was so immersed in it that I felt like I was living it. I was scared, I was heartbroken, I was cold when it snowed, I was in pain when the main character was hurt, I missed my parents; but I also loved my neighbors, felt joy at new growth, and loved the sunshine. To me that means that this was an amazing book. At one point while reading, I actually stood up to put my light jacket on and go to work when I said to myself, "Oh this isn't a warm enough coat when it is snowing outside". It was 60 degrees at the time, but it was snowing in the book. That's how in thrall I was while reading.
I loved the main character, Carrie. She was so good, loving, loyal, innocent and giving. I wish I was more like her. It made me wonder how I would react given the same circumstances. I will say that I'm still not sold on the main love interest - he is such a jerk at the beginning. I understand that he has gone through horrors in his life, but he is very cold-hearted at the beginning and I had a hard time getting over that.
I found the whole premise of the book a little scary because it felt like something that could really happen. A lot of the dystopian/post-apocalyptic books I have read have dealt with things like a pandemic, nuclear holocaust, alien invasion... This one simply had the dollar fail. There was a run on the banks - the banks failed. The government took over in a drastic way. Yikes! Maybe that was one of the reasons it was so engrossing, because it felt like something that could really happen to me and my family. Anyway, this was a great book and I highly recommend it. Now we wait for book 2, entitled Liberty , and it is being released on the 4th of July. Pretty cool. And I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the final book in the trilogy will be called, The Pursuit of Happiness .

Areas of concern:
When I bought this book for our library, I thought it was a Young Adult novel. The book does begin with the main character being 17 years old, but then it fast-forwards 5 years, so it is actually not a YA book. However, it kind of had a YA feel to it, and it was very clean, so I am not concerned about having it in the library. In fact, several students have read it and really liked it.
There is no bad language.
There is some talk of girls needing to sell themselves to keep their families safe, but it is done in as non-offensive a way as possible.
There are intense situations where characters fear for their lives.
There are corrupt and very scary government officials.

Fantastic and Realistic Dystopian

I was very impressed with this book! What a great start to a fantastic new dystopian series! What really makes this story unique is the way the world changed--it was all from a couple of economic crashes that left the country in shambles.

Logan Pond, in Illinois, is home to 30+ citizens, most of them illegal residents of the country. Carrie, an orphan left to care for two younger siblings, is a very kind, resourceful young woman, who is slightly oblivious to what's going on around her. I couldn't help but love her and root for her and there were many characters who felt the same way. When Mariah and Greg, relatives of the clan leaders, show up, things really come to a head, especially since Greg is so abrasive and rubs many the wrong way. Emotions run high and changes occur that have everyone on edge. Oliver, the local patrolman, is determined to help this peaceful clan, but when the heat is put on him for some arrests, his help may be discovered. Carrie has a big decision to make and it's not an easy one--be true to her heart or sacrifice love for the safety of her clan.

I loved the characters--they were really brought to life. There was one family that I absolutely detested! I was ready to show them the door right off the bat--they're very selfish, rude, and stubborn. A clan like this takes everyone working together to succeed and this family sure didn't do much to contribute. I loved watching Carrie's eyes open up to the world (and people) around her. She's the most selfless person ever. I also enjoyed watching Greg soften up. Oliver is such a nice, gentle man. How can Carrie decide? I honestly can't wait to continue on with the story to see what happens next.

This book was gripping and fantastic! It always gives me anxiety to read "end of the world" books, but the reality is that our economy or government may crash and our way of living could change, so I like to get ideas and feel more prepared after reading books like this.

"Life" is book 1 in this series and has a good ending but definitely leaves you wanting to read book 2. The characters and situations were very well written and I enjoyed the book immensely! I would consider this book to be clean (no language or sex), filled with drama, and some romance. I couldn't put it down and I am looking forward to reading book 2! I would highly recommend this book.

Laura Bickle grew up in rural Ohio, reading entirely too many comic books out loud to her favorite Wonder Woman doll. After graduating with an MA in Sociology–Criminology from Ohio State University and an MLIS in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, she patrolled the stacks at the public library and worked with data systems in criminal justice. She now dreams up stories about the monsters under the stairs. Dark Alchemy

I’m a big Laura Bickle fan, and when I saw she had a new book coming out, I couldn’t wait to read it. DARK ALCHEMY is a fun to read but creepy adventure in a modern day Wild West setting, complete with what I consider the author’s trademarks: a strong woman in the lead and a memorable animal companion.

In DARK ALCHEMY, geologist Petra takes refuge in tiny Temperance, trying to heal from a tragedy in her past. She’s also trying to find her father, who disappeared years ago. But on her first night, a coyote digs up a mysterious golden compass. Then Petra discovers a calcified body in Yellowstone, and things get even weirder.

DARK ALCHEMY is one of those books that’s hard to explain. I never knew what was going to happen next, or how the book would end, and that’s something I enjoy. In particular, I liked how the author went at exploring alchemy in a dark way — yup, this book is well-named. I’m also guessing that the author drew on the Hanged Man tarot card for inspiration, which I found refreshing — something new and spooky rather than a tired supernatural creature.

I liked how Petra was such a strong character. Most of Temperance is ruled by a corrupt landowner, but Petra doesn’t let that stop her from seeking justice where it’s needed. She’s helped by Sig the coyote, who is a cross between a spirit guide and a guard coyote. I adored Sig; Laura Bickle always writes great animal characters. I mean, who wouldn’t laugh at the thought of a coyote in a flea collar? And who wouldn’t love that same coyote when he attacks the bad guys?

DARK ALCHEMY is a standalone (I think), but it does have a bit of an open ending. I’d like a sequel, because I enjoyed my time in Temperance, and I’d like to see more of Petra’s story.

A refreshingly unusual and enjoyable read

An odd mix of urban fantasy and supernatural horror, with a strong heroine, a kick-ass coyote familiar, and a fascinating villain, all adds up to one of the more refreshingly unusual reads I've enjoyed in a long time. Unlike so many books in the genre, Dark Alchemy isn't concerned with saving the world, defeating the ultimate evil, or consummating the perfect paranormal romance. Instead, what Laura Bickle has crafted here is a story of weird people, weird history, and weird science, all told on a rather intimate scale that keeps the action focused and compact.

Bickle starts throwing mysteries at us right from the first page, offering just enough hints to really intrigue the reader. What's up with the two strange skeletons found in the field? What secrets are Sal protecting? What is Petra running from? What's with the odd coyote and its buried treasure? Why does such a small hick town have so many hick tweakers? What's up with drunken Frankie and his talk of prophetic ravens? What's the deal with Gabriel, a man who seems older and wiser than even his quick-healing flesh would suggest? Just how do Sal's secrets line up with Gabe's, and what do ravens and coyotes have to do with it all?

And that's just the first four chapters.

Yes, there's a bit of a Gunslinger feel to this, as the cover blurb teases, and it's easy to see the Breaking Bad element, but it's the small town Twin Peaks oddness to the town of Temperance that pulls it all together. I really liked the idea of The Hanged Men, led by mysterious Gabe, and Luneria (the Alchemical Tree of Life) was a very cool element that was incorporated into the story in ways I didn't really expect. Petra's story alone could have made for a decent book, and setting her against Sal could have made for an interesting conflict, but it's the addition of these supernatural, alchemical elements that really elevates the story to the next level. Petra and Gabe were, by far, my favorite characters in the story, and despite being a stereotypical villain based on the oft-used trope of the corrupt small-town landowner, I still loved the scene-chewing grandeur of Sal.

Dark Alchemy plays with the typical urban fantasy tropes, but puts a unique spin on them all. The magic and the mystery are the hook, but the characters are what will keep you reading. It's a fast-paced adventure, with something significant happening in every chapters, all racing towards a suitably epic climax that satisfyingly ties up all the loose ends . . . but which leaves the door open just a crack for another adventure.

Although I did end up enjoying DARK ALCHEMY for the most part, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be.

Although I did end up enjoying DARK ALCHEMY for the most part, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting it to be. I found some things in the story just plain odd and I had a hard time connecting to the main secondary character, Gabriel, who's story had a lot to do with the book as a whole.

Petra was easier to connect to and understand. Her reasons for being in Temperance and her past struggles were well explained. She knows what she needs and she fights to get it. The surprising addition of Sig, her familiar was fun. He was a crafty little coyote and I found myself looking forward to hearing what he was doing. I do wish we would have gotten more scenes with Petra doing her geology thing. There was plenty of action and danger involved which helped the story move along.

DARK ALCHEMY had a very unique storyline with a nice pace with a slightly hard to understand world if you're not paying total attention to the story. If you're looking for a bit of a different Urban Fantasy, it might be for you.

Great book, that has a twist or two

It was a really interesting book; at first I was thinking it was just another fantasy book, but after the first 20 pages I began to notice that his book isn't really just another fantasy book. As this book starts right off with explaining vivid details of the world and trying to let the reader decided on the likeablilty of a character. But that is not all, as this was one of the best books for it's battles. It was as if every battle was a titan vs. titan, whether it was an epic battle or a battle of emotions. This book was one of my best reads, and I would recommend getting this and throughly enjoying the content.

As in his previous books, I can see myself in the action. It's fantasy, but it feels real life. The descriptions paint a picture for the reader. I am neither a fantasy fan, nor a young adult, but I highly recommend this book.

This is an amazing book. It is much more than a dragon fantasy, it is a book about hope and treating all life with respect. The characters are well presented. Then themes of hope and equality's fight against greed and feeling of superiorty are what we need to teach our children.

Get ready to root for the bad guy....

With Skorkowsky's 'Mountain of Daggers' we are treated to a collection of roguish stories that aren't afraid to cut and bloody their hands on the razor's edge between classic Sword and Sorcery and Outlaw Grimdark.

'Mountain of Daggers' introduces us to the Black Raven. Some outlaws are blood-thirsty killers. Some are thuggish fighters. The Black Raven... is a thief -- lover of the chase and an old fashioned adrenaline junkie. Once you get to know the Black Raven, you realize he does these things, first and foremost, because he CAN. In a cutthroat world of ruthless criminals, killers, and outlaw power-brokers "Mountain of Daggers" follows the Black Raven through the opening acts of a journey that becomes as much for his soul and sanity as it is wealth, infamy, or the thrill of the hunt.

Not without a capacity for ruthlessness, the Black Raven's sinister streak claws at the surface as his adventures in this game of outlaws turns bloody and personal. Veiled just behind a playful smirk is a man on the edge of becoming just as cold and brutal as any scoundrel he shares Skorkowsky's vivid criminal underworld with.

If Ian Fleming had possessed a penchant for Sword and Sorcery rather than Walthers and Martinis, the Black Raven could have been his

Skorkowsky's fantasy world is crisply and meticulously realized in culture, concept, and style. Awesome traditional charming fantasy. Better than Damoren

I picked up this book on the strength of the Valducan series and Im so glad I did. Mountain of Daggers feels like it could have come straight from old school fantasy, with roguish charming thief, aligned to chaotic good, helping his guild manage the diection of nations through subterfuge, thievery, and other not strictly legal methods.

Mountain of Daggers is a collection of short stories / episodes that come together to tell the origin story of Black Raven. We see a young man transition from unlucky whelp to supremely competent master of the shadows. I cant wait to see more of Black Raven

I harbor a lifelong love of genre fiction and particularly the short story form

Warning: spoiler in the last paragraph. I’ve put a marker on it, but thought I’d let you know.
This book makes me nostalgic. I grew up feasting on the assorted short story anthologies available at my public and school libraries. As a result, I harbor a lifelong love of genre fiction and particularly the short story form. That being said, it isn’t merely nostalgia that helped me appreciate this collection.
I love Mountain of Daggers because it aims for the sweet spot of adventure storytelling and hits it from a variety of angles. Sword and sorcery isn’t always the strongest genre for short fiction. It isn’t as established as horror or even scifi, and authors often tend write themselves out of ideas fairly quickly, replacing trailblazing in their fantasy worlds with formula. Skorkowsky could’ve easily followed this path since his stories not only take place in the same world, but are centered on the same character. (Not even a Fafhrd to Ahren’s Gray Mouser to shake up the POV.) Instead, he spices the exploits of the leading man with a wide assortment of intriguing backup characters, motives, and atmospheres. This, of course, is only possible because the stories, while chronological, are not chapters in a novel, but distinct and self-supporting delights.
I especially like the way Ahren’s adventures dabble into other genre territory for flavor. Any tale about a thief will naturally tend toward detective story tropes, but the Black Raven encounters romance (“Race for the Night Ruby,” “Lover’s Quarrel”), spycraft (“The Reluctant Assassin,” “The Darclyian Circus”), and, in a standout closer, horror (“Born of Darkness”).
Weakest link first: “Darclyian Circus” lost me for a bit. It still has the excellent details of a fantastic world, but the ambivalent closure of the one of its main tensions left me unsatisfied. Perhaps there were too many threads to weave for a short story. The Black Raven has a burglary to achieve supplemented by a cover story to keep hidden. He is hidden among innocents (for this world, anyway), hoping to achieve his goal without bloodshed. But the aforementioned innocents are by no means stupid, and the tension ratchets up with each page as I wondered how he could possible wriggle away with the burgled goal but no blood on his hands. Without saying too much, the tale ended with a hearty bang but also a dangling conflict which would have me believe Ahren is absolutely ruthless (a character point which disagrees with several of the other stories).
The last story is the hook for me (as I’m sure it was intended). Each of the others establishes Ahren’s character by degrees: clever but not omniscient, mischievous but never unprofessional, ethical but not particularly moral (or the other way around, depending on what school you attended). But Born of Darkness raises one of the few overarching narrative lines and delivers a hammer-blow to the series. The tale almost immediately eschews the sword half of sword and sorcery for outright horror. Each ingredient is familiar yet detailed enough to be chilling: a fallen townsman trapped by a Faustian deal and unusually scarred by his experiences, a narrow and seldom-used track into the dark forest littered with spookiness, and finally, a villain whose very nature cements this story as a darker world within the already bleak realm of the Black Raven. Spoiler: Proving perhaps that Skorkowsky grew as a writer while finishing this book, while a certain lack of closure in “Darclyian Circus” confounded me, “Born of Darkness” is deliciously unresolved. This narrative ending is not only a hallmark of horror; it makes an effective cliffhanger leading to Book Two of the series. I’m only hoping that the author continues the serial-but-independent nature of the tales, instead of focusing only on what is admittedly as strong a foundational narrative conflict as I’ve read or watched in an adventure story.

Very good

This series is getting better with each episode. Of course, no spoilers will be revealed in this review. I'll just say that the conclusion of Episode 3 left me with that same feeling I get when I see a light left on in the basement just before bedtime. Did I leave that on?

Number Four and Number 12 demand that you read Episode 3

Eden Can Wait, Episode 1 and Episode 2 were FREE so, of course, I gobbled them up. Be careful what you take in because it will take you over. I'm hooked, I bought Episode 3 and finished it yesterday and immediately went to buy Episode 4. I hate myself for falling for "serials." I hope that I will become disenchanted but his writing is so darn good and the story line so different that I can't stop. I've bought up his other writings as well. Damn you Ray Kuili and welcome to my world.
