Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematica

This book uncovers the biggest scientific fraud of our age. It tells the fascinating and frequently astounding story of how the massive enterprise to restructure the genetic core of the world's food supply came into being, how it advanced by consistently violating the protocols of science, and how for more than three decades, hundreds of eminent biologists and esteemed institutions have systematically contorted the truth in order to conceal the unique risks of its products–and get them onto our dinner plates.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth provides a graphic account of how this elaborate fraud was crafted and how it not only deceived the general public, but Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and a host of other astute and influential individuals as well. The book also exposes how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was induced to become a key accomplice--and how it has broken the law and repeatedly lied in order to usher genetically engineered foods onto the market without the safety testing that's required by federal statute. As a result, for fifteen years America's families have been regularly ingesting a group of novel products that the FDA's own scientific staff had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health.

By the time this gripping story comes to a close, it will be clear that the degradation of science it documents has not only been unsavory but unprecedented--and that in no other instance have so many scientists so seriously subverted the standards they were trained to uphold, misled so many people, and imposed such magnitude of risk on both human health and the health of the environment.

Review

“Without doubt, one of the most important books of the last 50 years. I shall urge everyone I know who cares about life on earth, and the future of their children, and children’s children, to read it. . . . Steven Druker is a hero. He deserves at least a Nobel Prize.”--Jane Goodall, Ph.D. (from the Foreword)

“A fascinating book: highly informative, eminently readable, and most enjoyable. It’s a real page-turner and an eye-opener.”--Richard C. Jennings, Ph.D., Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, UK

“This incisive and insightful book is truly outstanding. Not only is it well-reasoned and scientifically solid, it's a pleasure to read--and a must-read. Through its masterful marshalling of facts, it dispels the cloud of disinformation that has misled people into believing that GE foods have been adequately tested and don't entail abnormal risk.” --David Schubert, Ph.D. molecular biologist and Head of Cellular Neurobiology, Salk Institute for Biological Studies

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is lucid, illuminating, and alarming. As a former New York City prosecutor, I was shocked to discover how the FDA illegally exempted GE foods from the rigorous testing mandated by federal statute. And as the mother of three young kids, I was outraged to learn how America’s children are being callously exposed to experimental foods that were deemed abnormally risky by the FDA’s own experts.”--Tara-Cook Littman, J.D.

“Steven Druker has written a great book that could well be a milestone in the endeavor to establish a scientifically sound policy on genetically engineered foods. The evidence is comprehensive, clear, and compelling; and its credibility is irrefutable. No one has documented other cases of irresponsible behavior by government regulators and the scientific establishment nearly as well as Druker documents this one. His book should be widely read and thoroughly heeded.”--John Ikerd, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Missouri – Columbia

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth will stand as a landmark. It should be required reading in every university biology course.”--Joseph Cummins, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Genetics, Western University, London, Ontario

“Steven Druker's meticulously documented, well-crafted, and spellbinding narrative should serve as a clarion call to all of us. In particular, his chapter detailing the deadly epidemic of 1989-90 that was linked with a genetically engineered food supplement is especially significant. I and my Mayo Clinic colleagues were active participants in the attempt to identify the cause of this epidemic. Druker provides a comprehensive analysis of all the evidence and also presents new findings from our work. Overall his discussion of this tragic event, as well as its ominous implications, is the most comprehensive, evenlybalanced and accurate account that I have read.”--Stephen Naylor, PhD CEO and Chairman of MaiHealth Inc., Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, & Pharmacology Mayo Clinic (1991-2001)

“Steven Druker has done a beautiful job of weaving a compelling scientific argument into an engaging narrative that often reads like a detective story, and he makes his points dramatically and clearly. The examination of genetic engineering from the standpoint of software engineering is especially insightful, exposing how the former is more like a ‘hackathon’ than a careful, systematic methodology for revising complex information systems. I will recommend this book to my friends.”--Thomas J. McCabe, developer of the cyclomatic complexity software metric, a key analytic tool in computer programming employed throughout the world

“Based on over 30 years of teaching computer science at universities and on extensive experience as a programmer in private industry, I can state that Steven Druker has done an excellent job of demonstrating the recklessness of the current practices of genetic engineering in comparison to the established practices of software engineering. His book presents a striking contrast between the two fields, showing how software engineers progressively developed greater awareness of the inherent risks of altering complex information systems – and accordingly developed more rigorous procedures for managing them – while genetic technicians have largely failed to do either, despite the fact that the information systems they alter are far more complex, and far less comprehended, than any human-made system.”--Ralph Bunker, PhD

“Steven Druker has written one of the few books I have encountered, in my many years of public interest work, with the capacity to drive major change in a major issue. What Ralph Nader’s Unsafe at Any Speed was to the auto industry and what Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was to synthetic pesticides, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth will be to genetically engineered food. It is profoundly penetrating, illuminating, and compelling, and it could stimulate a monumental and beneficial shift in our system of food production.”--Joan Levin, JD, MPH

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is a remarkable work that may well change the public conversation on one of the most important issues of our day. If the numerous revelations it contains become widely known, the arguments being used to defend genetically engineered foods will be untenable.”--Frederick Kirschenmann, Phd Distinguished Fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa State University, Author of Cultivating an Ecological Conscience

“Druker's brilliant exposé catches the promoters of GE food red-handed: falsifying data, corrupting regulators, lying to Congress. He thoroughly demonstrates how distortions and deceptions have been piled one on top of another, year after year, producing a global industry that teeters on a foundation of fraud and denial. This book is sure to send shock waves around the world."--Jeffrey M. Smith, international bestselling author of Seeds of Deception & Genetic Roulette

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is very readable, thorough, logical and thought-provoking. Steven Druker exposes shenanigans employed to promote genetic engineering that will surprise even those who have followed the ag-biotech industry closely for years. I strongly recommend his book.”--Belinda Martineau, Ph.D., a co-developer of the first genetically engineered whole food and author of First Fruit: The Creation of the Flavr Savr™ Tomato and the Birth of Biotech Foods

“Altered Genes, Twisted Truth reveals how the inception of molecular biotechnology ignited a battle between those committed to scientific accuracy and the public interest and those who saw genetic engineering’s commercial potential. Steven Druker’s meticulously researched book pieces together the deeply disturbing and tremendously important history of the intertwined science and politics of GMOs. Understanding this ongoing struggle is a key to understanding science in the modern world.”--Allison Wilson, PhD molecular geneticist, Science Director, The Bioscience Resource Project

About the Author

Steven M. Druker is a public interest attorney who, as executive director of the Alliance for Bio-Integrity, initiated a lawsuit that forced the FDA to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. This revealed that politically appointed administrators had covered up the warnings of their own scientists about the unusual risks of these foods and then allowed them to be marketed illegally. In organizing the suit, he assembled an unprecedented coalition of eminent scientists and religious leaders to stand with his organization as co-plaintiffs - the first time scientists had sued a federal administrative agency on the grounds that one of its policies is scientifically unsound.

He is a prominent commentator on the risks of GE foods and has served on the food safety panels at conferences held by the National Research Council and the FDA, has given lectures at numerous universities (including the Biological Laboratories at Harvard), and has met with government officials throughout the world, including the heads of food safety for France, Ireland, and Australia. In 1998, he was invited to the White House Executive Offices to discuss risks of GE crops with a task force of the President's Council on Environmental Quality. His articles on GE food have appeared in several respected publications, including The Congressional Quarterly Researcher, The Parliament Magazine, and The Financial Times. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley (with high honors that included a special award for "Outstanding Accomplishment") and received his Juris Doctor from the same institution (and was elected to both the Law Review and the legal honor society).

A meticulously documented account of corporate influence overriding sound science at the U.S. FDA
By n brown
Altered Genes, Twisted Truth meticulously documents the case against the U.S. government’s laissez-faire policy on genetically engineered foods.

Author Steven Druker raises an interesting parallel between computer systems and genetic manipulation. While computer systems – especially those that are life-dependent and life-sustaining – are carefully tested and retested to make sure that no “glitch” or “bug” could cause catastrophic harm, alterations to the far more complex genetic code of plants are made without similar precautions. These novel plants are grown, harvested, and consumed with little or no independent testing.

Two far-reaching reviews of GMO safety studies—one conducted by the University of Minnesota and another spearheaded by Dr. Jose L. Domingo, editor in chief of the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology—both found that about half of the studies reviewed linked GMO consumption to health risks. If a car’s brakes failed in half of its pre-market road tests, that car would certainly be kept off the market until it met basic safety standards.

Altered Genes, Twisted Truth is a clarion call for a much closer examination of the environmental and health issues raised by each and every one of these products of industry laboratories. Everyone concerned about human health, the health of our land, and the future of food must demand answers to the serious questions raised in this book.

This was an interesting read. Steven Druker, filed a lawsuit against the FDA The book, Altered Genes, Twisted Truth, features a foreword by the renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall, hailing it as “without doubt one of the most important books of the last 50 years”.The book is the result of more than 15 years of intensive research and investigation by Druker, who came to prominence for initiating a lawsuit against the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that forced it to divulge its files on GM foods. Those files revealed that GM foods first achieved commercialisation in 1992 only because the FDA:

• Covered up the extensive warnings of its own scientists about their dangers.
• Lied about the facts.
• And then violated federal food safety law by permitting these foods to be marketed without having been proven safe through standard testing.

The book points out that if the FDA had heeded its own experts’ advice and publicly acknowledged their warnings that GM foods entailed higher risks than their conventional counterparts, the GM food venture would have imploded and never gained traction anywhere.I was completely shocked by what I read.

The book the agrichemical industry doesn't want you to read...
By Concerned Parent
Altered Genes, Twisted Truth clearly demonstrates how political and corporate considerations may trump science not only in our federal agencies, but even in the ivory towers of research science. This unhappy and, until now, largely unpublicized, saga therefore has implications far beyond agriculture or genetics. Author Steven Druker points out, with ample documentation, how for at least the past three decades, the public has been exposed to a façade of reassurance, while dissenting voices, however expert, experienced or distinguished, have been shunted aside, spurned, and even smeared. Today the Emperor’s clothes have surely been strewn about the landscape where genetically engineered foods are concerned, and those who doubt this need only follow the carefully documented steps in Altered Genes, Twisted Truth to comprehend the accuracy of this title. No matter which side of this debate you currently occupy, this book is a must read!

Subtle chemistry, subtle magic, mind-blowingly addictive
By Valerie M. Mullen
"The Trouble with Kings" takes place in four main countries, leading to delightful cultural comparison and quite some speculation on fashion, which Sherwood Smith is known to do well. So when you read the summaries, please remember that there is much more to this book than just a plotline and a jumble of characters.

Princess Flian, her memory gone, is told by her cousin, King Garian, that she is passionately in love with, and engaged to, King Jason Szinzar - a man who is "as expressive as a stone. A stone in the dead of winter, to give an idea of how much warmth there was in his countenance." When she is kidnapped on the eve of her wedding, the outlaws that capture her jog her memory, and all she wants to do is get back to her home in Carnison and be with her father in his old age. The powerful men all around her have other plans, however, and she's forced to face more of reality than she would like to deal with. Can you kill a man because he's an enemy? Can you really not trust anyone, when you've a fortune to your name that's easier to acquire through kidnapping and threats than by a wedding?

Flian is not a hothead, and she could be called passive. Her subtle charms may not appeal to everyone, especially not people looking for a kick-butt princess willing to take on anyone and everyone (for that, read "Once a Princess" - hilarious and exciting in all the right amounts). However, there is chemistry. Not in the Twilight-esque, ground-shaking, throat-tightening animal attraction, but in gestures and conversations and how the characters interact with one another. It struck me as very realistic - the kind of romance you can relate to. The magic is mostly present in the fact that "The Trouble with Kings" is set in a magical world with some handy magical objects and interesting magical history. Both are believable.

That said, I stayed up until 6 o'clock in the morning reading this, unable to put it down. It was great to see Flian grow and decide to take action - decide to find out who really is on her side, and help them if possible. If you're willing to read a book about a girl who is strong in a way that doesn't necessarily involve kicking butt, I recommend this book as highly as I can. It's fun, it's fast, and it's full of all the things we love: adventure, excitement, kings, queens, princesses, romance, magic - and beautiful dresses.

Good but not as great as Crown Duel
By HHK
Like the other reviewers, I am a big fan of Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith. This was therefore an automatic buy. The book was good but not great.

The plus points-
1.Engaging but somewhat passive heroine. I like the fact that she is not a raving beauty but is described as quiet and plain.
2.Interesting cast of characters.
3.Gentle romance

The minus points-
1.Plot seemed to drag at the end.
2.Overall missing the spark that takes a book from good to great. I am not sure why- perhaps the meandering plot?

Still I liked it. Pleasant way to pass an afternoon. Also a clean read for your teenage daughter with romance but nothing graphic or inappropriate. I hate the cover!

Flian Tops Crown Duel's Mel in My Book
By BookFiend
Princess Flian is one of those very rare heroines that catches your heart even more because she is so realistic. I readily admit that I am a Sherwood Smith fan and thing that I am a rabid fan of her writing style, but The Trouble with Kings holds a special place in my heart. In my opinion, Sherwood's heroes are some of the best in the genre: they are competent, honorable and caring, but have a tendency to be misunderstood (especially by the heroines).

The author herself once admitted on the blog that her fans might think that Flian is too passive a character when compared to Crown Duel's Meliara, but I simply do not believe that. Meliara in Crown Duel is always jumping into situations with the best of intentions with often disastrous results due to too little planning. Flian is a much more diligent planner. She thinks before she acts and often decides, quite correctly, that there is no point in exacerbating an already bad situation. It think that Flian's shy and diligent character only make her more endearing and her ability to readily admit her flaws in refreshing. Just because Flian thinks before she jumps, though, does not mean she has no backbone. Afterall, the opening scene of the story involves the results of her fleeing on horseback.

I love Flian's story and the imperfect nature of all of Sherwood's characters. I hope you will take a chance on this wonderful story.

I won't be reading anymore of this series. There is just something about it that doesn't read right. Kimi t like the author leaves something out but includes non-important items which are described in to much detail. I don't recommend this book or the series.

Predictible, stereotyped characters and plot, too much emphasis on graphic descriptions of violence.

Dave Duncan is incapable of writing a bad book. I believe he is one of our greatest living authors. And this one rates right up there with his best. Complex characters in a fun, interwoven plot, excitement, action and a very satisfying ending. In many ways, Dave Duncan's greatest skill is the creation of exotic worlds and cultures, and that skill comes alive in this book.

Reliable and gripping!
By Paula
Among fans of fantasy novels, the readers who will like this best are those who want their storytellers to consider alternatives to non-stop combat scenes. Duncan certainly knows when to use combat, but he doesn't indulge in non-stop fighting at the expense of character development or world-building. Among fans of Dave Duncan novels, those who liked his earlier pair of novels about the storyteller Omar will be pleased, as this novel hits some of the same tone.

Pretty weak effort by my favorite author

I LOVE Dave Duncan's books. This was one of his weakest by far. I'll buy everything he writes, but had I started with this book I never would have become the fan that I am now.

“My legal name where I currently reside in the city of Liege, Belgium, in the year 2010 A.D., is Gaspar Valessi, but that is not my real name. The name I was given some 30,000 years ago, when I was born in a Paleolithic settlement in the region that is now called Germany-- the name my father gave me shortly after I was voided, bloody and howling, from my mother's womb-- is Gon." So begins the saga of the immortal Gon, a 30,000 year old vampire. This, the first volume of his memoirs, recounts his mortal life in prehistoric Germany alongside his male companion Brulde and his two wives, the Neanderthal Eyya and his Cro-Magnon mate Nyala, and details the fearsome events that lead to his transformation from man to undying monster. This Revised and Expanded Edition includes more than 30,000 words of new material, adding depth to much loved characters and more fully realizing the author's vision of the Oldest Living Vampire and the prehistoric world that gave birth to him. By turns beautiful and subversive, poetic and seductive, the Oldest Living Vampire Saga is like no other vampire series you've ever read! Readers Rave About The Oldest Living Vampire Saga "Sensual and exciting"..."Had me on the edge of my seat"..."Anyone who enjoys Anne Rice's Lestat stories will find this a great read."..."The story of Gon is incredible"..."This author has tremendous talent"..."Not your run of the mill vampire"..."BRAVO!"..."I'm an Anne Rice fan but decided to dive in to what I hoped would be a good read. I was not disappointed!" What The Critics Say "In the competitive literary world of glittery immortals and undead enchantresses, [Mr. Duncan] has successfully created a unique vampire with an extensive historical background that has been embraced by multitudes of fans."--Examiner.com..."I wasn’t expecting much. It’s an interesting book with a very unique main character."--Uwanted2C.com The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All has been a Kindle best-seller since its debut in 2010... find out for yourself what all the rave reviews are about! Clan of the Cave Vampire
By W. V. Buckley
Ever have a friend who keeps trying to get you to read a book you just know you won't like? That was certainly the case with The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All. First off, I hated the title. It sounded too much like Allan Gurganus' The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, a book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Then there's the author's name - Rod Redux - which sounds a bit like the stage name of a actor in '80s porn. Finally, the description of the book made it sound like Jean Auel had ingested some sort of hallucinogenic drug and decided to plop a vampire down in the middle of her Clan of the Cave Bear series. Uh-uh. No sir! No way!

Finally, over a long weekend, I wanted something quick and escapist to read and settled on Redux's Oldest Living Vampire Tells All. Expecting a campy vampiric satire, I started reading and made an interesting discovery. The book wasn't bad at all. In fact, I found myself almost compulsively turning pages wanting to find out more about Gon, the 30,000-year-old member of a hunter-gatherer society who becomes a vampire.

Sure, there were places that strained credibility. For one, many researchers now believe that our ancestors and the Neanderthals had little or no interactions ... certainly not the interbreeding that takes place in the novel. Still, I have to admit being intrigued by Redux's description of Gon's family life; a group marriage consisting of Gon's male partner, a Neanderthal female and a Cro Magnon female. This is not the world of Jean Auel's Ayla and her hunky cave-stud Jondalar. As some reviewers have mentioned, there are some fairly graphic desciptions of sex in the book, but those hardly rise to the level of paleo-porn some reviewers describe.

If there's one frustration I do have with The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All it's that there's a lot of build-up to Gon actually becoming a vampire ... and then no real explanation for the origin of vampirism. Granted, it's only the first in a series, so I'll hold off judging it too harshly because it leaves questions unanswered.

All in all, I found the book to be a unique entry in the plethora of vampire fiction available today. And I'm looking forward to re-entering the world of Gon in future volumes of his saga. The Oldest Living Vampire series may not be a classic, but as an enjoyable way to pass time I was pleasantly surprised.

All in all a good read
By Irene
As an avid horror fan this is not the type of book I usually buy. The reviews and the description at amazon (A blend of historic fact, fearsome fantasy and explicit sex)caught my attention. It was an interesting, well written, and enjoyable story. Even though it's not exactly my type, I'll be reading part 2 to see what happens to Gon next. As for all the reviewers who were shocked by the sex... well I guess if you are easily shocked this book is not for you. However there have been far more graphic sex scenes in so called romance novels.

Drop Dead Great
By Tomato Woman
Finally,a vampire novel with no love-stricken teenage/vampire angst. Couldn't read this one fast enough and was thankful I got it with the second in the series included. The only disappointment was when I found out the third one isn't out yet. Not since the Covenant With the Vampire series have a I read a vampire story for real adults I enjoyed this much.

More please!

About the Author
I write in coffee shops. I edit in coffee shops. I live in coffee shops. Why, hello there! I am Melody Robinette, a 26 year old writer who is married to an amazingly handsome man and has two super fat cats. I've been writing since the age of 15, getting my start on The Sims games. I would take screen shots in the game and write a scene to go with it. Then I came up with my first book and started writing that, but my computer deleted it and I gave up... BUT THEN I started back up in my early 20's and never stopped. :) Primarily I write YA and NA, dabbling in a variety of genres including: Contemporary/Urban Fantasy, Dystopian, Paranormal Fantasy, LGBT, and Commercial Fiction. In my non-writing life, I am an English/Special Education teacher. When I taught 12th grade English, I had the great pleasure of sharing some of my work with my students, and their enthusiasm for my books is what encouraged me to seek publication.

Absolutely Loved It!
By ellen
When I read first novels by any author, I tend to read with slightly lowered expectations than I have of authors who have an established publishing record. This author blew all my expectations out of the water!

The language is engaging, inviting the reader into the Underground. The author describes vividly, creating a scene without bogging the reader down with unnecessarily intricate details. She gives just enough - we can picture what she shows us, use our imagination for more, and move on to the action taking place in the scene. Mrs. Robinette is a talented author who knows how to find the right balance to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. I found this book eminently readable, which is higher praise than it may sound!

But what I think I enjoy most about this book was simply how fun it is to read! The author captures the personalities of her characters and develops them individually, which is not only a talent but it creates for the reader a relationship with her people. I do not have time to sit and read in one setting, but I found myself thinking about the characters during my work day - something I rarely do! She allowed me the opportunity to make new friends, for which I am grateful. I plan to introduce them to my students as well, and may create a unit based upon this book or series of books!

The second book cannot be released soon enough for me!

Great Read!
By kellay
This is now one of my absolute favorite books! It has an interesting and dynamic cast of characters, that I'm sure will grow and change through the series. The plot is full of twists and turns that you don't see coming. It is really worth reading and appeals to a broad audience. Enjoy it!

I wanted to like this. I really did
By Jennifer Lynne Quinn
I wanted to like this. I really did. I thought the premise sounded intriguing. But the writing style was a complete turn-off. Incredibly juvenile and bland, the narration caused me to put the book down halfway through chapter 7. An excerpt:
" 'Arbor Lake.' Crystal said. 'It's where everyone our age goes for fun. And school starts back Monday so I'm sure nearly the whole school will be there.'
Luke's eyes lit up. 'Will, uh, will there be girls there?'
Crystal giggled. 'Of course, and I'm sure they'll all be quite interested to talk to the new prince.'
'Who's that?' Luke asked.
'Er...you," Crystal said.
'Oh. Right. Then what are we waiting for?' "

High school aged twins are uprooted from their entire lives and discover they are really royal elves from a magical underworld realm and their reaction is simply, "Whoa, way cool, let's live here now and check out all the HOT ELVES, WOO!"

I made myself keep reading a few times, but....no. Not even worth finishing. Sorry.

I normally read YA books too. I enjoy the light, fast reads, as a working mom it fits with my schedule better than, say, Game of Thrones. Which I've read too, but I'm just saying that that is not my normal fare. This book is set with high school age characters but written at about a 6th grade level. All the stereotypical characters have made their appearances:
-Young main characters who discover there is more to them than they knew.
-Mysterious benefactor (and newly discovered relative)
-Down to earth, average girl who they befriend upon arrival.
-Dreamy mysterious boy who the female lead feels an immediate romantic draw towards.
-Popular, pretty "queen bee" enemy character
-Major nemesis OUT TO GET THEM.

No originality, cookie-cutter characters. Boring.

The Runaway Robot, by Lester Del Rey

  • The robot named Rex had been bought as a companion for Paul when the Simpsons decided to pioneer on Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter...a rough, dangerous satellite where a small boy needed a strong, intelligent robot to protect him. By the time Paul is sixteen, they are inseparable. Robots, of course, have a personality leeway that gives each one a certain individuality within its pattered capacities — and Rex had a wonderful personality, with a logic quotient that allowed him to reason. But when the Simpson family is ordered back to Earth and Paul refuses to part with Rex, the robot plans to stow away on a spaceship to Earth — no easy feat, even for a robot with Rex's abilities. Thrilling chases in skimmers, through spaceports, and over the deserts of Mars are just the start of the problems for The Runaway Robot!

Classic Science Fiction in print again
By Sarah Cole
I first read this book over forty years ago, and it's still a favorite. It follows the adventures of Rex, a companion robot, and his teen-aged master Paul, as they make their way from one of Jupiter's moons to Earth. The story is reminiscent of /Huckleberry Finn/, in that Paul had run away from his family, when they are recalled to Earth, in order to find Rex; and Rex had run away from his new master in order to find Paul. Their adventure, told from Rex's point of view, is a memorable reflection on the extent and sacrifices of friendship, the wonder of new worlds, and the nature of life.

The Runaway Robot
By Teddy Rose
Well, for one, the book I received was NOT a hardcover. Two, this was the first book I had read that peaked my interests in science-fiction and robots!! I thought, at the time I read it, that it was the most intriguing story I had ever read! I truly wanted a copy for my own personal collection.

I've remembered this book since I read it as a kid
By Brent Butler
As a juvenile sci-fi, as a kid I found this book to be great fun and fascinating. Of course Lester Del Rey was one the the writers at the top of the sci-fi field.

I'm surprised that it is still so easy to get a copy of.
