“For starters, honey, I don't believe in Hell--that's just some old man's way of telling me reasons why I can't be me. Like “biology is destiny” means I have to be a boy.” -- “Lady Marmalade’s Special Place in Hell” by David Sklar There have always been stories of those willing to blur or transcend the traditional gender roles. Some do it out of necessity, others are merely embracing their true selves. Sometimes it’s for fun, other times survival. Every culture has their gender benders, their cross-dressers, their rule breakers. From Bugs Bunny to Mulan, Alanna of Trebond to Klinger, our folk heroes and cultural icons push boundaries and challenge expectations. In Scheherazade’s Façade, twelve of today’s most intriguing authors spin tales of magic, mystery, self-discovery and adventure, each with a twist. In these pages you’ll find shape-shifting dragons, triumphant drag queens, tragic selkies, lost princes and would-be warriors. You’ll find star-crossed lovers and mysterious travelers, cross-dressers and gender bending heroes of all sorts. Featuring all-new fantasy and urban fantasy from Tanith Lee, Sarah Rees Brennan, Tiffany Trent, Aliette de Bodard, Alma Alexander, David Sklar, Melissa Mead, C.S. MacCath, Paolo Chikiamco, Sunny Moraine, Lyn C.A. Gardner, and Shanna Germain.

Good Things Come Eventually
By Jonathan K. Stephens
I also subscribed via Kickstarter and frankly the final product was worth the wait (shed a tear for editor Michael M. Jones' hair which he no doubt pulled out follicle by follicle as he went through this tortuous process).

12 original stories and nary a clunker among them. Since they've all been described above, I'll merely say that for me the outstanding stories are by Aliette de Bodard (who just keeps getting better and better), Sarah Rees Brennan, Paolo Chikiamco, and Tanith Lee. Brennan and Chikiamco in particular are writers I was unfamiliar with and will definitely keep an eye out for in the future.

Surprisingly, none of these stories are listed in the Locus Recommended Reading List for 2012. I ascribe this to the difficult midwifing of the anthology, which is really a crying shame as some of these stories are among the best I read for 2012.

Highly Recommended.

Wonderful collection
By Alysa H.
Individually, a few of the stories in this collection were amazing, a few were okay, and at least one I actively disliked. But for me, the strength of the amazing ones more than made up for the rest, and also helped to illustrate the whole point of the collection, as put forth by Jones in his delightful introduction.

This is an important and timely collection about the mutability of gender and sex, with fantastical elements at the forefront but ultimately serving to express real truths. A very broad array of stories with something for everyone!

Consistent Storytelling...Fast Paced Action
By lawboss
In writing this review, I assume you have read Part 1. Part 2 (to me at least) is a transitional tale--and concludes the end of one era and gives a glimpse of another. There is plenty of action in this read and the plot moves along at a good pace. There are less spelling errors in this book (which won't give you much pause) and I appreciated the good length of the offering. Part 2 picks up nicely where Part 1 ended and seamlessly continues the storyline. If you enjoyed Part 1--you will find Part 2 to be just as enjoyable. I like this author and look forward to Part 3. If you are new to the series, I recommend you start with Part 1 and carefully read the reviews there (good and bad) as obviously all of the reviews of Part 2 (so far) are 5 stars and reflect readers that enjoyed Part 1.

Another Success in this Series
By Fillmore Wood
This new author continues his excellent tale in book 2 of this series. I awarded book 1 five stars in my earlier review and assign the same rating to this volume. This series may not please readers who are hoping for space sex and/or romance novels, as the author does not let such distract from the adventure. But he does desirably devote considerable attention to support and opposition relationships between humans and artificial intelligence beings, an arena that will interest many readers, some of whom may have grown up reading the Asimov “robot” novels and stories. Also suitably covered are the various interactions between characters in a military structure. The author continues with his plausible and appealing characters in a compelling military SF adventure, providing the right amount of attention to astro-navigation and strategic and tactical battle details, but without over-burdening the reader or interrupting the flow and excitement. I like the author’s focuses and approach.

I particularly appreciated the author’s appendix in which he discusses the physics and other details that underlie his treatment of space travel and battles. I also appreciated that the author began this book with the end of book 1 (of particular benefit to those who began book 2 a significant time after finishing book 1) and ended with a sneak preview of the upcoming book 3 (teasing and extending one’s interest).

Space warfare strategy described in great detail. Would like the characters to be better defined. Looking forward to part 3

Different - but not for everyone
By Book Gannet
The style this book is written in won’t be for everyone. Though it’s split between first person (Raine) and third (Cade) there’s a lot of recapping and info-dumping. In fact the vast majority of it is told rather than shown and frequently doesn’t bother with speech marks, putting the dialogue in with the rest of the prose. Normally this would drive me up the wall, since I hate tell not show, but there is something about this book that made it work for me. Well, almost.

Raine and Davey know all about being scared. In fact Raine’s entire life is dedicated to worrying about her son, the future that’s laid out in front of him and the death that stalks him. I liked Raine and appreciated the fear she’d been living with for so long – to the point where I got increasingly frustrated at the way everyone else dismisses her. No, she doesn’t have a “gift” like Davey or Luna, but that doesn’t mean Luna should keep telling her she’s failing her son. Not that she puts it quite like that, but she’s not exactly supportive when she tells her to stop running. And while Cade obviously doesn’t have all the facts, the way he thinks she smothers her son is far from flattering. I get that Davey doesn’t want to run anymore, and he’s not really at the age where he can understand what she’s given up for him, but sometimes I just wanted someone on Raine’s side, to support her and try to help.

I found Cade trickier to like, and I’m not entirely convinced by the romance. At the start Cade is grieving, he has an alcohol problem and he’s an all round mess – understandably. It might have been nice to have seen his relationship with Davey develop, rather than having the story jump a couple of months down the line and have things recapped. That happens a lot, though, the jumping, the recapping and leaving me feeling more than a bit disconnected with the characters and the relationships between them. Cade and Raine certainly have plenty in common, mostly their grief, but there are so many secrets that I can’t see how Cade ever really got to know Raine. He saw things in her that he thought could help him heal, but love? I wasn’t convinced. Nor was I by Cade’s pre-Denny past. It just seemed so unlikely.

There were elements of the plot I really liked – not least the shape-shifter/skin-walker aspect. However, in the same way that I didn’t always connect to the characters, there was a lack of creepy peril for me. The threat is clearly there, but I didn’t always feel it. There were moments when the narration became immediate and showed rather than told, and those were good and gripping, but all too often it slipped back into tell, tell, tell and the intensity was lost. It might also have been nice to have had more a mystery too. Instead it’s obvious who is coming, when and how it will turn out, though I wish the ending had extended a little more to address future concerns.

In all this is a good read, but certainly not for everyone. It’s very detached, and I was left wondering just what the main focus was supposed to be – the skin-walker wasn’t quite scary enough, the romance didn’t really convince me. Mostly in the end this is Raine’s tale, about the relationships in her life, her worries and facing her fears. It’s different, it has plenty of potential to intrigue, but in the end I didn’t connect to it as much as I wanted to.

The Moon Tells Secrets - Shifting Shadows
By Alima Livzletlivz
I’m very picky where paranormal genre is concerned. It took me a long time to initiate myself to read this genre and even now I just have a handful of authors who I read paranormal, and do not venture out. So it is a welcome change to read a brand new author Savanna Welles, and her upcoming book “The Moon Tells Secrets” asked to review by St. Martin’s Press, and I have to admit I was a little skeptical. But it turned out to be an interesting read after all.

Raine is on a constant run along with her 11-year old son, Davey who’s bestowed with the ‘gift’ of shifting, passed on from generations to generations. And now an evil form to eliminate competition and gain territorial rights as per legend is hunting them. Raine ends up with a distant cousin Luna who is aware of what is happening and what may happen. With no choice but to trust Luna, Raine agrees to settle down until things become a little quiet.

Cade is a teacher and mourning the gruesome death of his wife. As Luna’s neighbor, they have a deep sibling and supportive bond that keeps Cade sane from losing himself to his grief. Fate brings him into contact with Raine that sparks attraction and hope that they may make a future together. As he starts tutoring Davey, he comes to know the truth about Davey and wows to protect them. Cade may be Raine’s only salvation, yet the fear of the unknown and that it may harm Cade burdens her with guilt and she makes a decision to leave him and Cade has to come to grips with the truth that his wife’s murder is connected to Davey and Raine.

If you were looking for a gritty, nail biting, and edge-of-the-seat paranormal, then you would be disappointed. But if you want an interesting narration of a family facing distress and trying to accept the ‘gift’ that is creating havoc in their personal lives, then “The Moon Tells Secrets” is just right for you.

Narrated from Raine and Cade’s point of view, Savanna Welles did a very fine job of weaving a story around paranormal, yet keeping it normal. There is no dearth of emotions, sublime passion and the absolute terror that this family goes through as they try to make a normal life. It will keep you captivated, you will feel for their horror and sadness of being targeted, and you will rejoice in their small moments of happiness.

“The Moon Tells Secrets” is a definite magnetic read that will take you on a journey of some amazing legendry stories and keep you reading until the very end.

... was originally on Sara's Books and Things I really liked this book
By Kindle Customer
This review was originally on Sara's Books and Things

I really liked this book. Primarily how it ties it's supernatural element, the skin-walkers, in with the history of the Navajo. It's nice to have a book that tries to get their history right. I also enjoyed how the relationship between Raine and Cade develops. Starting out as a desperately needed friendship then veering into something more.

Davey was another character I really liked. He's trying so hard to grow up, to be strong enough to face what threatens them, but he's still a kid. You see him changing and getting stronger, getting smarter. He's ready to face what he must, even if it means never being normal, or having a normal child.

I also really enjoyed the story. It's not your cookie-cutter shifter novel. It's a tale of growing up, of fear, and of moving on in your life after a devastating loss.

This book is set to be published on March 24, 2015. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

A great read and cannot wait to read the next installment
By R. Real
Although I have not read books 2-5 in this series, I was able to read the book and understand everything for the most part. I did have a little difficulty understanding the Shadows completely but I am sure once I go and read the middle books I will be up to speed. I still think the book could be read without reading the other books but it will leave you with a few questions.
The story line flowed well without those nasty grammar and misspellings that often slow down the flow and take some of your reading enjoyment. The sex scenes were steamy and didn’t seem as if they were added just to ‘sell’ the book. The New Orleans setting could be felt through the food and location descriptions. (However, I still cannot wrap my brain around tuna with crepes.) I was cheering on the good guys, biting my lip with worry over the victims and smiling by the end of the book and wondering if there may soon be the pitter patter of little feet entering their lives.
If you are a fan of the series then you will want to dive right on in and find out how things have been going for the newlyweds. If you have never read a book from the Bourbon Street series, you can start with this one but I would recommend starting with book one and working up to this one so you are not left wondering about the inner workings of the Circle, the Brotherhood, and the Heavenly angels. I would recommend this series and even the Crescent City Fae series as they are both well written and inventive works.

Incubus of Bourbon Street(Jade Calhoun Series)
By Eva
This series just keeps you cheering them on in their adventures that take them to different places and through the veil. Jade does not lead a boring life, since she's come to NOLA she's been a magnet for the unsavory things that lurk. Love her and her coven and friends, they definitely keep us entertained. I will be getting started on Piper`s adventures also, can only imagine where she will take us. Great Job!!!

I just wish that I didn't have to wait for the next book to come out. Deanna is one of my favorite authors. I really recommend all of her stories, cuz I've read most of them and I loved all the characters. I lose so much time, cuz I just couldn't put the book down. So, if you want to read a really great story, just pick up one of Deanna Chase's books, sit down, turn the phone off and enjoy.

"Roma Gray sets the stage magnificently for her short story collection of horror tales, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon: Six Trick-or-Treat Thrillers. Her stories crackle with tension and atmosphere, and sometimes you can even hear a ghoulish chuckling if you listen carefully. I particularly liked her vampire in the first story. Gray's writing is smooth and polished, and the reader quickly gets involved with the characters in her stories.'

They're fun and suitably spooky for a dark evening's delight."

Great Stories Leading to Even Greater Novels
By gzim
The intriguingly titled "Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon" by Roma Gray was an absolute pleasure to read! The book is a collection of six longish short stories that turn out to be more than just short stories: they are also the first chapters in novels of several interlinked series. The double good news is that these works make excellent stand-alone stories, while also serving to get their respective novels off to rousing good starts!

Each of the stories is imaginative and original, written in an evocative, professional style, and full of interesting, well realized characters. They are all so different from each other that I am left in awe at the sweep and majesty of author Roma Gray's imagination.

Feast on Fat Tuesday tells the story of a creature half ghost and half vampire that stalks and attacks vampires in the same way that vampires stalk and attack humans. But has he done his job only too well? Are there any vampires left to feed upon? And if not, what will become of this strange revenant? And Then Everything Changed recounts the discoveries of archeologists who are searching for the cause of the extinction of the advanced race that inhabited Atlantis. Could it be that they exterminated, and were exterminated by, an extinct race of intelligent, non-human beings related to dolphins? Did both races unleash weapons of mass destruction on the other race? And if so, could the archeological investigations uncover the still viable remnants of these deadly weapons and inadvertently release them on the public with deadly results? Yes, I'm afraid that these things just might be! Summer Vacation, perhaps my favorite of the bunch, tells of a teenager who was poorly treated by his family and started dabbling in witchcraft to pass the time and to put mild curses on his family members and other enemies. Then he travels across the country to live with his Native American grandmother on an island in the Pacific Northwest. He and his new friends find a mystery pit in a wooded ravine and start excavating it in hopes of discovering buried treasure, similar to the historical find on Oak Island. But meanwhile, have his spells grown into a malevolent power that he can no longer control? Very intriguing, suspenseful and atmospheric! The Invisible Carrier relates the grim story of an epidemic that is spreading through small isolated towns in the Pacific Northwest. The virus is traced back to a fruit bat that was illegally smuggled into the country. But people can't catch the infection directly from a fruit bat. There is some intermediary species much closer to mankind carrying a strain of the virus that is deadly to humans. Could that intermediary species be the legendary Sasquatch? Unnatural Disasters recounts a series of disasters around the world that have one thing in common: the disasters unleash some kind of force or effect that keeps killing people after the disasters have been abated. We follow the three protagonists of the story as they steal into the secured zone around a mega-hurricane site to try to rescue their mother. What they find instead is disturbing and quite chilling. Will the Real Monsters Please Stand Up introduces a lighter, more comic element into the series of grim disasters that we have been previously reading about. An archeologist and a surviving Egyptian pharaoh with magical powers form a strange partnership in order to find the hidden elixir of immortality and deliver it to a corrupt federal governmental agency which is holding the pharaoh's daughters hostage.

The next part of the book consists of interviews with the main characters of the six stories. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical of this technique at the start, but I'm happy to say that it works! The six interviews manage to be informative about the coming novels that will build off of these short stories while at the same time being quite entertaining in their own right.

Author Roma Gray has done an awesome job putting together a collection of such diverse and entertaining stories. If she has the energy and stamina to flesh these stories out into novels and series of novels as she intends to do, the reading public will be rewarded with a legacy of great books to read for years to come. I wish Roma Gray success in her ambitious project!

Here there be monsters…
By Bridad
I just finished the début novel by Roma Gray called “Gray Shadows under a Harvest Moon”. While the monsters may be what many will be accustomed to in the “Halloween” realm, the author went out of the mainstream to take some risks. The origins and evolution of familiar creatures such as vampires, ghosts, zombies, mummies, Bigfoot and more are highly imaginative. The format and virtual interview of characters from the stories were also unique. It was a good marriage of peculiarly original and familiar.

What I liked more than the unique twists on familiar monsters was the way the author took the reader along for the ride. Her love for the genre is evident. She draws the reader into her passion for spooky stories. Upon reading the setup for the tales, the mood was definitely set.

While the stories are meant to promote future works, the stories themselves hold up well enough to be considered stand-alone in nature. The short stories are precursors to novels the author has planned. The intent is to give the reader a voice on publication order.

My favorite of the six stories is “And Then Everything Changed”. I don’t want to give too much away of the tale, but I can see it working as a SyFy series. It is like The Walking Dead meets Stargate, with a little bit of the X-Files thrown in for good measure. It was a fun read and would be my vote for the first novel published.

Don’t skip the fictional interviews. These are devices the author has employed to give little tidbits of information to the readers in a clever fashion. I found them very humorous. Interviewing a fruit bat? Hilarious.

The author has given herself a long list of future novels for publication. I am anticipating the demand will necessitate more than she has planned. She is one to watch.

SHADOWS and Light
By Katrina Mink
Populated by Mardi Gras stalkers, dreaming cities and skulls that bite, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon is a fun and fast-paced read. Author Roma Gray offers six tales as diverse as they are terrifying: featuring alpha predators too adept at killing to survive, warlocks that unintentionally become victims of their own magic and a mummy who just doesn't know when to stay down, these "trick-or-treat thrillers" hit that sweet spot which leaves the reader satisfied, but still wanting more.
At times author Gray weaves an almost incantatory magic, evoking memories both real and imagined. Within this world, mysteries sleep just beneath fallen leaves, secrets of the autumn season our protagonists cannot resist. No matter how fantastic or unlikely their origins, Gray's characters are natural and believable, giving these tales a richness and depth that is immensely gratifying. In turn sly and beguiling, Gray effortlessly weaves a world readers demand more of. Happily, that is all part of the plan.
Each of the six stories in this slim volume is the first chapter of an upcoming novel. Not only that, the second section of the book is devoted to interviews with the denizen's of Gray's fictional worlds, further embellishing the fiction. From heroes who flee their self-invoked fates to the monsters who embrace them, Gray Shadows Under a Harvest Moon is an immensely readable and compelling little anthology. Recommended!

FORSAKEN: THE SYSTEMIC SERIES (book 4), by K.W. CALLAHAN

“Forsaken” is book #4 in the Systemic series.

It’s been a long and arduous journey since John Stevens rallied his family together in the remote forests of southern Illinois in an effort to shelter them from the most devastating pandemic in history.

Now they’ve finally discovered a secluded spot in the abandoned town of Olsten, Georgia where they finally feel safe from the dangers of the outside world. But are they?

While John and his family look for solace from the Su flu’s aftermath, Jake Stines and Ava Acadro are searching for anything but isolation. They’re looking to make their way – no, force their way – into a world that fits them perfectly – no rules, no laws, no mercy.

Willing to take what they want or die trying, the two are setting up shop in the wilds of the Atlanta metro area. But will their combination of brawn and brains be enough to solidify their presence in the city?

The Best Dystopian Series of 2015!
By Odie
It appears that John's group has finally found a safe haven in a quaint little town in Georgia. The survivors finally have an opportunity to breathe easier and get some needed rest. There's no doubt that they are blessed with a taste of normalcy. Well, as normal as life can be when they're always waiting for disaster to strike, ripping away their good fortune. The group knows not to get too comfortable! While John's group is thriving, unfortunately, so are Jake and Ava. They're like a pestilence that keeps spreading and can't be destroyed. This is an exceptional series!

Continuing Pleasure..
By Sandra B
While I love the continuing saga of John, Claire and family, this book had at least 70% of Jake and Ava's storyline and less of the main characters. I like how Jake and Ava have their own thing going on and I am just waiting for the scumbag Jake to get his comeuppance from either Ava or her guys. With that said, John's story line was boring this time so it evened out. I am curious how the author wraps up the ending. On to the 5th and final book!!

Can You Give A Man A Break?
By Trisha Doran
Great books - I love dystopian novels/series and wow this guy John just cannot get a break. But there's always hope, which is what I like. Very tense most of the time and very exciting.
