Must read for Dark Dragon Kings Fans

Night's Blaze: Part 4 bring to a satisfying conclusion the dilemmas that had been separating Rhys and Lily, but not without some major twists that I did not see coming. It is a hard-to-put-down-last part to this novel. However, after a harrowing escape all is well for them, just like I want romances to conclude.

Along with Rhys and Lily relationship secure some of the big questions I have had in this series are answered. The identity of the mastermind behind the assault against the Dragon Kings is revealed. The upcoming showdown between Con and Ulrik is growing imminent. Other supporting characters motives and actions are not so clear. Ulrik and Rhi leading the pack in this. In fact, the struggles of Rhi are becoming complicated when the last seen of her raises my eyebrow as well as many questions. I have no idea what she has planned when she asks “I want to know if someone can do bad things and still be decent.” Now that is the question of the ages. I can hardly wait for the next in the series.

Fans of Donna Grant, Night Blaze in its entity is a must read. She has out done herself this time.

The final part of Night’s Blaze is a fury of deception, twists and the ultimate betrayal that puts Lily right in the path of danger and her life is at stake. As Lily tries to fathom the betrayal coming from close to home, the fear of losing Rhys is even more painful, and she would take a bullet to save him.

Part 4 of Night’s Blaze resounds with the echoes of evil that is hell bent on getting to the secret weapon. It unleashes the dragon with Rhys as he’s finally able to shift, but would he be able to save Lily from an imminent death from close to home?

Donna Grant brings an end to Night’s Blaze with more questions than answers, keeping us reeled into the stories of her Dragon Kings. She takes us on a ride of pure danger and the sacrifices the Dragon Kings are willing to make to save their mates. And she ends Night’s Blaze with an amazing twist of sequences that as an avid reader has you caught up in Dreagan Land, will keep you wanting more and more.

Great conclusion... :)

Okay... now we're back in the game... great conclusion!
Now that we're done, I have to say that Nights Blaze probably isn't my favorite of the Dark Kings series but that doesn't tarnish my desire to continue onward for more! For whatever reason, I just never could wrap my head around the Lily, Dennis thing. He came across as a very weak character and perhaps I needed more character development in regards to his role in the story. I was a little boggled as to why Rhys didn't just kill Dennis when he had the chance? He let Dennis play his little game and put Lily in the midst of danger and it was completely unnecessary. Anyway... I struggled with that part of the story. BUT... now I'm definitely sitting on the edge of my seat in regards to Rhi... is she going to give in to her dark side?? Please don't Rhi... :(( The way the story ended has me worried... so, yes... definitely anxiously awaiting the sixth installment now!

“Rules of Enchantment” by David Klecha and Tobias S. Buckell. The American military battle Orcs, Trolls and others in a two-front war.

“The Damned One Hundred” by Jonathan Mayberry. The enemy forces have much greater fire power especially witches and vampires, but they stand united expecting death.

“Blood, Ash, Braids” by Genevieve Valentine. In WWII Russian female pilots use witchcraft.

“Mercenary’s Honor by Elizabeth Moon. On Paksworld, two mercenary commanders seek to avoid massive deaths.

“The Guns of the Wastes” by Django Wexler. The academy grad meets his first enemy alien.

“The Graphology of Hemorrhage” by Yoon Ha Lee. The recipe for shadow soup starts with obtaining a shadow.

“American Golem” by Weston Ochse. In Afghanistan, the deserter seeks the terrorist who killed his brother; unaware that his sibling became a golem searching for that same killer.

A great collection of well written and interesting military fantasy!

I received a free advance reader copy of this title.

"Operation Arcana", edited by John Joseph Adams, was a great read, with consistently interesting and well written stories. The editor kept the stories on topic, military fantasy, yet diverse enough that it wasn't repetitious. The only small complaint I might make is that a couple of the stories were obviously part of a long running series, and to unfamiliar readers, these stories would be more difficult to fully understand upon first glance. However, this is only a very minor complaint as these stories were still well written and entertaining. So much so, in fact, that I am likely to seek out the series that they are a part of (which is probably the author's intention by including them). In summary, I would wholeheartedly recommend this anthology of military fantasy.

This collection did not disappoint. The writers did a fine job in creating new worlds. I hope the editor puts another collection together in the near future. I will look for these writers in their individual work. Certainly worth your time.

Originally self-published in 2001, Vigorito's bloated first novel goes mainstream in this "newly updated" version. When Dr. Blip Korterly, the eccentric philosopher best friend of narrator and molecular biologist Dr. Flake Fountain, vandalizes a bridge with the words "uh-oh," he starts a chain reaction that ends in cataclysm. Along the way, Flake is enlisted by Tibor Tynee, the megalomaniac president and CEO of Tynee University (and Flake's boss), to create a vaccine for the Pied Piper virus, a U.S. military-designed bug that destroys humans' ability to communicate. General Kiljoy, in charge of the Pied Piper project (and very, very Gen. Ripper from Dr. Strangelove), works out a deal with the local police and the university to test the virus on prisoners. Blip, arrested after a confrontation with a raving preacher on the university green, ends up becoming one of the test subjects. The virus, of course, escapes the test facility, leading to some very bad things. Vigorito frequently delves into goofy metaphors and hippie screeds, and though his novel offers plenty of absurdity, his inability to go big with humor or vision leaves this feeling like Pynchon ultra-lite. THIS BOOK WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!

I usually cringe at gushy superlatives, but this time it cannot be helped. This is absolutely the best book I've ever read. To be certain, it would be inaccessible to folks with a fifth-grade reading level. It would also be incomprehensible to people who cannot think on an allegorical level. But for anyone who knows how to think, THIS BOOK WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! Every element of the story is tightly crafted. I wish I could describe the story but I've already tried with my friends and find myself fumbling about trying to describe it. Let me try this: It's a hilarious and hallucinogenic apocalypse, but apocalypse doesn't mean what you think it means. The story and the main characters are so engaging that after the first forty pages I couldn't put it down to answer the phone. The writing has layer upon wonderful layer of allegory and metaphor reminiscient of Thomas Pynchon or Tom Robbins, and the epilogue left me with an afterglow that I've yet to come down from.

One of those books that you just can't put down

I normally do not write reviews. But, it's been quite awhile since I've read a book that engrossed me as much as this one did. It took me through a wide array of emotions; humor, anger, sadness, and joy. Even as I'm writing now, I am almost speechless. Almost. I love how smoothly the book flows; the story itself is beautiful. I recommend it to everyone I know, and all have thanked me profusely for it. So, I guess the real reason for writing this is to recommend this book to all of the people that I don't know. Read it. You won't regret it.

First of all, this is one of the coolest books I've ever read. A review on the front cover calls it a "Dr. Strangelove for the biotech century," but I would also compare it to Cat's Cradle, one of my favorite books, although Just a Couple of Days is a good deal more lighthearted.
Second, it was very difficult to put this book down since the chapters are short. I found myself always wanting to read just one more chapter, until the next thing I knew I had read fifty more pages.
Third, the tangents are fascinating and hilarious. The writing got a little voluptuous at times, but that was one of my favorite things. It was clear that he was enjoying himself.
Finally, the philosophy of language and communication implied by this story left me engrossed in thought for hours. This book is a celebration of life. You'd have to be a jaded cynic to not like it.

The Malazan Saga continues on...but with a struggle...3.5 Stars

This is the 8th book in Steven Erikson's 'Malazan Book of the Fallen" series.

Of all the books in the Malazan series, this is, without a doubt, my least favorite...I will explain

First, the pros;

Overall, this series is epic fantasy at its best; in fact 829 pages in this book alone. There is intrigue, magic, unexpected enemies and friends and even some erotic moments; not to mention the usual backstabbing and clandestine plotting. In this book we are reacquainted with some old friends from previous tales, e.g. Cutter, Druiker, Karso Orlong (Toblakai warrior), Anomander Rake and last but not least, the ever loquacious, forever famished, mound of round, Kruppe.

Erikson's strength is his use of prose to describe people and their surrounding, all the while weaving a tale his characters come alive in; this latest installment is no exception. However, this may be the first in all the books of this series that may be deemed somewhat overwritten, mainly because of some of these perceived strengths. Which leads me into commenting on...

The cons;

1.)As with previous Erikson works, the book starts off by given brief glimpses of several different developing stories. The problem here, in my opinion, is that unlike previous books, most of these story lines do not really develop into something resembling a plot until well after the first 200+ pages.

2.)In addition to the slow development, the writing seems disjointed and difficult to follow; I had to almost 'study' sections to try to figure out what Erikson had his characters doing and saying.

3.)I found I became 'weary' of trying to interpret the vague, unclear conversations and happenings that occurred through out most of the entire novel. Eventually I stopped trying to figure out the difficult passages and just concentrated on sections that I found easy to understand; I don't think I'd have finished the book otherwise.

4.)I never thought I'd ever hear myself saying this about an Erikson book; I found myself somewhat bored by some of the dragged out, confusing descriptions and tales; almost to the point of skimming them.

5.)And last, I can't remember the last time I've been so happy to have finally finished a book.

Conclusion:

An intriguing Malazan tale that had potential, but unfortunately got mired down with a sluggish beginning and middle; the last section (Toll the Hounds) was better...but overall, a somewhat 'difficult' read. That is not to say there weren't some great moments in this book, because there were, many in fact; and this was my main reason for rating the book as high as I did.

I seems to me that Erikson has 'stumbled' with this book; he knows what he's talking about, but I can't say the same for me. I wonder about other readers; I'm I the only one to notice this tendency towards 'unreadability'?

I hope Erikson gets back on track with his next installment; one more book like this and he may begin to lose some of his loyal followers.

Difficult to rate this book, so I settled for a 3.5 and rounded it up to a 4.0 (rather than down to a 3.0 ) because I decided to give Erikson the benefit of the doubt...for this one.

Patience is rewarded

I can certainly relate to those who are annoyed by the frequent jumping from one character (or group of characters) to another every 2-3 pages or so, but if you stick with "Toll the Hounds", everything eventually coalesces into a stunning conclusion, as at least one central theme is resolved. Here are some reasons to hang in there:

1. Mother Dark turned her back on her children, the Tiste Andii. Her son, Anomander Rake, assumed responsibility for the fate of his people. The purpose of his sword Dragnipur is revealed, and is not what it seems. Rake's fate and purpose are revealed in stunning fashion, enough to justify reading "Toll the Hounds".

2. Traveler: who is he, and what brings him to Darujhistan? Another revelation sure to surprise those familiar with earlier books. Never assume the departed do not return.

3. Hood, God of death; what is he behind the hood? His purpose is also revealed; the dead are collected for a reason, and and marching towards their fate.

4. A new player is introduced; the Dying God. The visceral corruption of his blood compares to the Crippled God.

As usual, several players are called upon to make terrible sacrifices, and redemption abounds. As always, a few Bridgeburners fight against extinction. And of course, another group of intrepid travelers bumble and stumble their way towards their destination in comedic fashion, trying not to get themselves killed in the process.

I know the book starts a little slow, but stick it out; the conclusion is worth the price of admission.

From a rabid Steven Erikson fan - I was a little disappointed

I'm giving this book 3 1/2 stars, 4 stars officially because Erikson deserves being rounded up. I'll start by saying I am a hugely devoted Steven Erikson fan and consider this the best fantasy series in print right now. However, Toll the Hounds has some shortcomings from my eye that haven't surfaced in the other books of the series. Here's the specifics:

As noted by the author, Erikson changed his writing style with this book. He is writing mostly as though the story is told by Kruppe, to an audience named later. I didn't mind this too much but it comes and goes like a fake Keanu Reeves accent. On top of this, there is far less action for 90% of the book and much more reflection on emotions, internal monologue, pondering the past etc. Most of it honestly, was quite boring and tedious, not to mention inconsequential. Instead of rewarding the readers with more of the interesting storylines (Traveler/Karsa, Bridgeburners in Daru), he almost delights in teasing them and then immediately switching to something boring once the reader's interest get pique'd. I thought most of the Nimander story, Seerdomin/Redeemer, and even the Rake/Endest Silan/Spinnock Durav storylines were FAR too lengthy and fell flat.

Then after all of the musings (kind of mopey musings) of the Tiste Andii, the Redeemer, Seerdomin, etc we get about 100 pages or so of extreme unadulterated mayhem for an ending. Now, I like unadulterated mayhem, don't get me wrong, but it just came across as rushed. The mayhem was more quick, random and confusing than deep and emotional like it should have been. The emotional payoff of this book should have blown Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice away, given the material. It doesn't. If the pace of the book was a chart it would be a 1 or 2 for the first 90% and then spike to 200. It didn't work in this book and I have to say Erikson kind of asked for it (I'll explain).

Erikson has always been known to be intentionally vague. He'll have flashbacks or dialogue that is meaningless to the reader because they don't know the context. I've always liked this about Erikson because I know he'll explain later (making second readings of his books a must). In this one though, he takes it over the top. There is almost nothing given to the reader so they can get an emotional grip on the story. A spoiler free example is the story of the Tiste Andii, Endest Silan, Anomander and his brothers. There is a bunch of depressing talk of sacrifice, betrayal, redemption, etc but we have no idea what Erikson is talking about at the time. How am I supposed to get emotionally involved when I have no idea what the context is? When I finally get the explanation it is too late, and rushed.

I think others may understand what I mean, perhaps not. I recommend reading the book at any rate. The action at the end IS awesome, and this is still the best fantasy series on the market. I hope Erikson goes back to what he does best which is maintaining an exciting pace and leaving the emotional smash over the head for the end, when we're fully vested. Memories of Ice did this and is still one of the top 3 books I have ever read. The way he balanced the action, emotion and mystery of that book was pure genius.

I still love Erikson and I truly hope other readers see something in this book that I did not. A weak Erikson book is still miles ahead of Terry Goodkind's best.

The World Reacts to Unity

Where we left off: The Armor Hunters have been defeated, and the super-team Unity stands revealed to the world. Sponsored by both the British and United States governments, they are the first line of defense for a world that has been confronted with threats far greater than previously dreamt of. One such former threat – the sentient giant robot and former Armor Hunter spaceship named GIN-GR, believed destroyed by X-O Manowar – is alive, well, and now working with Unity while covertly housed at Cape Canaveral.

Unity vol. 4 presents an interesting paradigm switch for the heroes of Unity. During the Armor Hunters event, Unity felt somewhat constrained as the overarching narrative Matt Kindt had started was seemingly put on hold to accommodate the Hunters story. Now we are getting back into the swing of things!

What I really loved about the tale told in this trade is the continued exploration of how the world reacts in the post-Armor Hunters era. We get glimpses of the marketing blitz undertaken to popularize the concept of the Unity team to the world, as well as the negative reactions that several of the world’s governments have to the idea that the first “superhero” team are representing American/British interests. The team raised to counter Unity – The United – represents a fascinating cadre of characters, and it is my sincere hope that we see more of The United in future Valiant stories to come.

The other side to this story deals with Unity’s first official recruit, as psiot Faith Herbert, aka Zephyr from the Harbinger series, is invited to join the team. As we have already seen from the Harbinger: Omegas, Faith and her boyfriend Torque have become semi-celebrities, and Faith apparently tests very well with focus groups run by Unity’s marketing teams. We are treated to the Faith #0 issue in this trade, filling in the gaps of Faith and Torque after their encounters in Mexico City with Generation Zero (see Armor Hunters: Harbinger), before Unity makes her the offer of a lifetime. But will the good-natured Faith fit in with the likes of Ninjak or the Eternal Warrior?

Also included in this trade is Unity #0, which tells the tale from the Eternal Warrior’s vantage point of an earlier time when he was teamed together with a group of exceptional individuals. While this first reads like just a nice story exploring how this world needs a “Unity,” I don’t think it spoils anything by saying that Kindt takes the opportunity to seed one or two important characters for future stories in this tale, making it extremely important for anyone enjoying the unfolding Valiant mythology. Not to be missed!

Another really great arc of Unity! This one features my favorite character, Faith!! The team is looking for a new member, one that tests well with the public, and cheerful Faith is perfect...until...well, you'll have to read it to see how things shake out. Unity is consistently amazing, and this arc stands out even more!

Basically, I have a hard time complaining about a Valiant book.

As usual, this volume of Unity is a grab-bag, but scaled up this time for sure! Next to Kindt's other Valiant books, Unity has always struggled to fit, serving primarily as a home for cross-over tie-ins instead of really telling its own stories. Volume four subverts this theme by introducing a new villain super-crew, called The United. The United have some really excellent ideas packed in, but the biggest whiff of all is that each individual member barely gets a sentence in before they're under containment and effectively neutralized. They're pretty, and probably cool characters, but you wouldn't know it from the tiny bit we saw of them in this book. The story instead focuses more on Gin-Gr, the accountability of superheroes, and the short lived career of Faith Herbert as a Unity member. The book is successful here, no matter how bummed I am about the missed characterization opportunities for the new big-bads.

Also collected here, are two excellent zero issues, focusing on the origins of Unity, and Zephyr, post armor-war. Guest artists Cary Nord and Robert Gill show up, granting the stories some much needed personality. Joshua Dysart even writes Faith's issue, and she's always incredible in his hands. The zero issues outshine the relative, by the numbers, ho-hum primary narrative, but all together it makes for a fun, worthwhile collection. Still holding my breath on this book really taking off.

Interesting

The first book in the Fall of Fair Isle trilogy, Broken Vows, introduces General Tulkhan of the invading force and Imoshen, the last T'En princess. Each is on a mission--Tulkhan to conquer Fair Isle and Imoshen to save her people from annihilation. Their characters are rich in emotion and nicely fleshed out. I enjoyed the story, but the constant shift of POV within the same chapter was a bit jarring at times. One minute I was in Imoshen's POV and then the next sentence, we're back to the General's.

There is plenty of action in the book and it kept me turning the pages. Lots of twists and turns in the storyline that kept me intrigued to the end. I definitely want to see how this plays out so I'll be reading book 2 and 3.
