A very satisfying romp through the imagination of Donovan Neal...

I think what makes Donovan Neal's writing so unique, is his ability to take scripture, early Hebrew writings and folklore and put them together in a thrilling plausible story written from a heavenly viewpoint. Handling time and theological mystery with aplomb, he gives us a glance into what an angel might view and feel.

I love the personalities and attributes of the different types of angels and the explanation of the ongoing war between Heaven and Satan's fallen angels. This was a fun read and in no way should we look at this book as revelation or scripture, though its contents are loosely based on scripture. As stated by the author this is speculative Christian fiction. You can't help but wonder at the things we cannot see and the longing in our hearts for the unknown back-story that frames the history of mankind. We know that God loves us, and yet to trust Him sometimes is so hard. We see the same problem with many of the angels in this story.

The character of Enoch is also very interesting and knowing the Old Testament we know that he did not die as other men but was brought to heaven because of his close walk with God. In this book he is given life and character. If he is anything like he is portrayed in this book I can see why God took him without death.

All in all this was a very satisfying romp through the imagination and story telling prowess of Mr. Donovan Neal. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Christian Speculative Fiction. It is a real treat to look at heaven from a different viewpoint and let your imagination go! I am eagerly awaiting the third book of the series.

what an exciting ride!

This book was even better than the first, and had me sucked in from the very first chapter! The characters of angels were believable, intriguing, and sympathetic. I loved how throughout the book the author was able to follow much of the old testament, but still make it a wonderful, stand alone story. I also like the author's to the point, yet fun style of writing that made the book highly readable. I'd recommend this book to anyone Christian or non-christian. This is the best book I've read in years.

This book was so different from what I expected. I totally enjoyed this book. Reading this book felt like a walk through the Bible through the eyes of Angels. Mr. Neal has written a book which will tug on hearts and intrigue the mind with the vivid imagery of his story telling.

gritty urban fantasy

Hell has opened the portal to earth so warrior Elizabeth Phoenix heads to Los Angeles to close it before the Apocalypse Happens. However, as she battles to control her dueling nature, the leader of the light Liz is stunned as someone long dead is alive. Still she must prevent the Varcolacs half dragons from causing the ultimate eclipse that will plunge the earth into total darkness as the sun and moon will be destroyed. Sill even if she wins, Liz sentences many to death.

At the same she struggles with simply saving the world, she wonders about her relationships. Her former lover Jimmy Sanducci returns and her mentor Navajo shaman Sawyer seems to want her on a more personal level. Perhaps it is all her doomsday fighting, but she is unsure whether she trusts either of the men in her life.

The latest Phoenix Chronicles (see Doomsday Can Wait and Any Given Doomsday) is a gritty urban fantasy starring a kick butt heroine who finds her world turning uglier and darker as she has reached the point that she distrusts the two men in her life. Although at times the story line feels overwhelming to Liz and to the reader with so much going on, fans will enjoy her latest escapades as the heroine knows that even delaying doomsday does not prevent Apocalypse Happens.

Who wants to be alone when the APOCALYPSE HAPPENS?

Elizabeth Phoenix is called the leader of the light. She is psychic, psychometric, and very powerful. She is also a sexual empath, one who absorbs powers through sex. When a Nephilim, a fallen angel, is nearby Liz usually gets a vision that tells her all about it. Liz is also a vampire; one she keeps controlled by a tight and magical collar.

Liz arrives in Los Angeles to destroy a nest of varcolacs, half human and half dragon creatures. They crave the destruction of the moon and sun and Liz needs to prevent an upcoming eclipse or all is lost.

Jimmy Sanducci is Liz's former lover and her second in command. They love and hate one another passionately. Sawyer is a Navajo Shaman who is also Liz's mentor. She's slept with both of them and absorbed their powers. It will take all three of them working together to defeat the varcolacs. The problem though is Jimmy currently hates Liz and Sawyer may be working the other side. Liz also keeps reaching to her collar to remove it when danger lurks. Whom to trust with your life?

Lori Handerland has penned another fascinating addition to the PHOENIX CHRONICLES. Sexy and gritty, urban fantasy and paranormal readers alike will enjoy it. This is a great series and I cannot wait for book 4 to get here! I like the mix of paranormal with the view of the afterlife in the h's eyes. I like the twists and turns that have gotten us here so far and the good mix of steamy romance with a storyline. I highly recommend reading this series from the beginning.

A series of vignettes tied together by similar themes and characters, Yoss' "A Planet for Sale" is one of the most intriguing science fiction books I've read recently.

Earth, in the near future, has been contacted by alien species, collectively known to humans as "xenoids", who were compelled to make themselves known as the world was on the brink of self-destruction. The world is now clandestinely ruled by the xenoid species, preventing humanity from taking a role in the greater galactic community.

Being a Cuban writer, Yoss' use of recent Cuban history as an influence on the conditions of the world in "A Planet for Rent" is hardly passive, showing the oppression of the Cuban people and the corruption of the ruling class through thinly veiled allegories that fit very well in the vision of the future he's skillfully crafted. This book continues a trend I've noticed in my science fiction reading as of late of authors deeply engraining sex into numerous aspects of their works, a trend that has greatly confused me: is it that sex is such a deeply animalistic thing that's programmed into every being, it has to be touched on? Is it that science fiction authors tend to be giant nerds that simply don't get any? A minor part of the work as a greater whole, the inclusion of sexual situations stood out to me.

Minor nitpicking aside, this book make me think, and that's all I really ask for when reading novels. I eagerly await Restless Books's next translation of a Yoss novel, coming summer 2016.

Lost interest

I understand the format of this book is a collection of short stories, so my review is somewhat biased because I didn't realize this when I started reading it. It was interesting right off the bat, and the author introduces some truly compelling characters in the first few chapters. After that, however, I thought it fell flat. The stories of some of the later characters failed to intrigue me. Even the pivotal character, Jowe, who is mentioned by nearly every character, lost his appeal.

This book had promise, but personally, I don't think it delivered. But I am curious about Yoss' other works. He certainly had some fascinating concepts.

As one of the 'afflicted' aka the Gluten-Free I had to get this book

I gave it as a gift to my mom for Mother's Day. She is also gluten-free (GF) and kind of a pioneer in GF baking; though the irreverence of this book was definitely pushing the envelope in our mother/son gift-giving relationship, she ended up loving it.

Hysterical. April Peveteaux will make you pee your pants while simultaneously saving you from pooping them. Gluten is my Bitch is a must-read for gluten intolerants/anyone looking to cut down on gluten/all humans who appreciate delicious food and laughing while reading things.

Read the title and knew I had to get it for my sister's bday as we are new on the gf experience. Loved her honest opinion and sharing of experiences. Have already made several of the recipes and already family favorites. My favorite thing was her husbands comment "Somebody please send me some gluten!" Hahah

Franz Bardon is considered by many as the greatest adept of the 20th century. A tireless worker for the light, he survived Hitler's concentration camps but died a victim of Communist persecution in 1958. He left behind him four legendary books which have become acknowledged classics of occult literature.

Initiation into Hermetics is the first and most important of Bardon's works and is rightly regarded as the cornerstone of his entire opus. In contrast to other books on the subject of magic, Bardon focuses his attention on the practical training necessary for all true magical attainment. Using the four elements of fire, water, air and earth as a foundation, Bardon teaches the student how to master these universal forces in the three worlds of body, soul and spirit. The author leads the student step by step through exercises providing detailed training in the entire arcanum of magic, from basic techniques in thought control and imagination to advanced teachings in astral travel, the use of talismans and magic mirrors, and much more. No other writer has ever developed such a clear, concise and practical program of magical development.

About the Author
In 1924, the spirit of a high Hermetic adept entered the body of a fourteen-year-old child named Franz Bardon, destined to become one of the most remarkable magicians of the 20th century. Though he maintained a normal life as an industrial mechanic and family man in the Czech town of Opava, his other, occult life was full of attainment and tragedy. During the last years of WWII, Franz Bardon spent 3-1/2 months in a concentration camp. After the war, he practiced as a naturopath and graphologist and devoted himself to the teaching of Hermeticism and the writing of his books. His work was interrupted forever in 1958, when he was arrested during one of Czechoslovakia's notorious Communist purges. Among other things, he was accused of treason and imprisoned. Bardon died under "unusual circumstances" in a prison in Brno, Czechoslovakia on July 10, 1958.

I wish I had started my Path with this book.

Had I done so, I would not have had to wade through all the new-age waffle that pretends to be magickal training today. And I'd have more money. But with that said, this book isn't for the casual dabbler or the wannabe wizard. This is a serious, PhD- level book for the Seeker on the Path who, like me, has passed through the many stages and levels of insight on their way to Mastery. It is beautiful in its dense Germanic imperative simplicity, and just getting through a chapter and getting it into your psychic marrow may take weeks or months. But the results will be well worth it, as the 'Ah-Ha!' light within your soul gradually brightens, and your world will never be the same again.
This isn't for the timid, or the doubtful, or the casual dabbler. It won't blow up in your face like Crowley's stuff does, but it definitely will blow your mind if you are not ready to accept the responsibility that the exercises and techniques in this book will impart to you. I'd say that if you're under the age of 35, maybe you should wait to get this, because you should have some living under your belt to truly comprehend its impact on your life.
This book should be the keystone of any Gnostic, Hermetic, Kabalastic, or Rosicrucian practitioner of the Western Mysteries library. Mr. Bardon has given the student magus a great gift. Use it with wisdom and care.

Not for everybody

With all the praises this book has been getting, let me make this clear: THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY. And don't think that this is the only magic-book you'll ever need. Wrong. This book containts a complete initiation system which is a true description of the first Tarot Card. But this course can take a lifetime to amster if not many lifetimes for many people. You won't become a magus overnight.
I disagree with the person who said that you shouldn't read ahead until you complete a step; nor that by doing so, you will finish the book in 2 years. It is safe to read ahead; it will also take many, many years to master the whole course. This is THE book for serious magic. But be warned: it's only for the most disciplined, most determined students. Also, don't neglect to study the writings of other adepts.

This Should Be in Every Pastor's Library

This book has become a classic, and with good reason. Some books on emotional stuggles are written as if we human beings do not have a spiritual side. Other books are written as if the proper prescription for all emotional struggles is, "Take two Bible verses and call me in the morning." DON'T RUN........SPRINT AND GO GET THIS BOOK!

The way I came about this book was my church home pastor is doing a bible study series based on this book.Little did I know that the Lord would use this book(as well as His living Word) to destroy yokes and just annihilate strongholds in my life.Dr. Seamands is straight forward with his language,uses the bible , and also human examples to make his points flesh for the reader.Many times I had to put this book down because it was just so deep and I saw myself in a lot of the pages.As christians we have been told the false doctrine that if we are depressed or lacking in self-esteem that something is wrong with us and that we are not true christians.Well this book dispels these myths and outright lies and gives biblical proof that prophets too had emotional crisis at given times. This book gives you simple,helpful and Godly steps to rising above the enemy's tactics to keep you in a pity party with yourself and is not afraid to say to the saints that you can love the Lord with all of your soul and still want to die.It gives a way for us to work out our problems ,issues and just gives a lot of insight. This is the book that simply(along with the Word)changed me and my desire to just live life in Christ. What a blessing this book has been to me.

Except for the Bible, this is the best book I have ever read

God has used this book to wipe away the confusion and frustration that I have endured over many, many years. This book has given me understanding and God has set me free. I can now forgive others and ESPECIALLY myself! I now know the difference between bad theology and true Christian maturity.

About the Author
Gary Klein, PhD, a senior scientist at MacroCognition LLC, was instrumental in founding the field of naturalistic decision making. Dr. Klein received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969. He spent the first phase of his career in academia and the second phase working for the government as a research psychologist for the U.S. Air Force. The third phase, in private industry, started in 1978 when he founded Klein Associates, a research and development company that had grown to thirty-seven employees by the time he sold it in 2005. He is the author of Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions; The Power of Intuition; Working Minds: A Practitioner’s Guide to Cognitive Task Analysis (with Beth Crandall and Robert Hoffman); and Streetlights and Shadows: Searching for the Keys to Adaptive Decision Making. Dr. Klein lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Gaining insight

Gary Klein is a giant in the research field relating to how people actually think and make decisions in natural settings. In this book, he describes the value of gaining insight with reducing errors as two ways to increase individual and organizational performance. Both are needed, but reducing errors only gets us so far. There is much more to be gained by a dedicated focus in increasing insight. The book is organized in 3 sections: How insights are triggered, the things that interfere with insights, and how we can foster insight in self, others and organizations. Throughout there are interesting, well written stories to illustrate the concepts. As always, Klein includes a complete reference section. Since I have read all of Klein's books, I find this one is an excellent deeper dive into Streetlights and Shadows - but you can read this book without having read his other work and you won't be lost. Seeing What Others Don't is great for individuals interested in improving the quality of their own thinking, for leaders in organizations, and it would be a great supplement for an MBA level course of study.

A brilliant explanation of what triggers insights, what interferes with recognizing them, and how to nourish them

Long ago, I realized that the true value of most (if not all) breakthrough insights is best determined by the nature and extent of the disruptive impact they have on the given status quo.

Here is a three-part challenge:

1. How to create an environment within which insights are most likely to occur?
2. How to recognize and then grasp them?
3. How to nourish their development and, if necessary, defend them while in that process?

These are among the questions to which Gary Klein responds and he does so with a series of brilliant insights of his own.

In 2005, he learned about a movement called "positive psychology," started by a psychotherapist - Martin Seligman - who was determined to add "meaning and pleasure to the lives of his clients" by emphasizing the positive dimension of their experience. "I felt that the concept of positive psychology applied to decision making as well," Klein notes, and suggests that to improve performance - increase the quality of decisions - "we need two things. The down arrow is what we have to reduce, errors. The up arrow is what we have to increase, insights. Performance depends on doing both of these things."

Klein focuses on 120 "cases" that demonstrate one or (in most instances) several of five strategies: Connections (dots, yes, but also similarities, causal relationships, and interdependence); Coincidences (clues to possible patterns of evidence and verification); Curiosities (initially, inexplicable phenomena that require closer attention); Contradictions (initially viewed as absurdities but then...); and Creative Desperation (unexpectedly resolving a problem that seems unsolvable). It should also be noted that there are situations when what seem, at first, to be insignificant insights are in fact like individual pieces of a puzzle that, when fully assembled, replicates one of Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionist paintings such as "No. 5, 1948" or "Autumn Rhythm, 1950." Hence the importance of mastering all five of the strategies, and, developing discipline sufficient to eliminate irrelevancies but the determination to explore anomalies and the courage to stay the course to increased understanding.

When concluding his book, Gary Klein makes a number of especially important observations that I have pulled together in a mosaic of brief excerpts. They suggest the thrust and flavor of his insightful curiosity. "I see the examples in this book as a collective celebration of our capacity for gaining insights, a corrective to the gloomy picture offered by the heuristics-and-biases community. [The same community of negativism and myopia that Martin Seligman rejected years ago.] Insights help us to escape the confinements of perfection, which traps us in a compulsion to avoid errors and in a fixation on the original plan or vision...The magic of insights stems from the force for noticing connections, coincidences, and curiosities; the force for detecting contradictions; and the force of creativity unleashed by desperation. The magic lives inside us, stirring restlessly."

Those who read this book will be well-prepared to release that magic and then use its power for discovery and creation in ways and to an extent that may once have been inconceivable.

Do You See What I See?

There's always new advice on how to foster creative environments, and this book gives you 120 examples! Author Gary Klein provides so many studies because he has found that insights come about in many different ways. He organizes this slightly overwhelming amount of information into the categories of connections, coincidences, curiosities, contradictions, and creative desperations. Crafty, isn't he?

After explaining how combinations of these insightful encounters develop good ideas, he moves on to describe common obstacles that interfere with insghts. This section brought immediately to mind the discoveries in group dynamics that the Synectics group made in the 60, particularly the Discount Revenge Cycle, which occurs when people are not careful in responding to another's "wacky" idea. The Practice of Creativity: A Manual for Dynamic Group Problem-Solving is one of my favorite books for its detailed approach to unifying collective intelligence into fresh ideas in a similar way to the "positive psychology" movement that Klein incorporates in his book.

Overall, this is an interesting and well-written book that I recommend to managers and general audiences alike.
