The Terminal, by Jeremy Gosnell

Scuba diver Eric Rayner disappears while diving at Dean's Blue Hole in Long Island, Bahamas. Atlantis researcher Allison Chandley is approached by Italian billionaire Sergio Franca. USGS political liaison Walker Reade is studying a report by a young seismologist detailing a possible eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera. Each of these seemingly unrelated incidents is tied together, leading to an incredible journey back in time to the ancient kingdom of Atlantis. While following in Eric's footsteps, Allison is whisked away, pulled 70,000 years into the past to end up in the fabled Atlantis. She finds the kingdom in shambles and under constant attack by strange creatures called the Abaddon. When Allison is captured by the creatures, the people of Atlantis deploy an ancient biological weapon to destroy them. Eric and Allison must join together to find a control system called The Terminal, which can alter time and space. The Terminal is a stunning sci-fi thriller that adeptly explores how a past civilization could exist and what that existence could teach today's world. Jeremy Gosnell is a magazine writer and a long-time marine aquarist. He lives in the mountains of western Maryland and was inspired to create this story after reading Graham Hancock's writings on a pre-classical era civilization. His biggest challenge was "tying human genetics, ancient history, and seismology together to create a story that leads back to an ancient kingdom, written about long ago by Plato." He enjoyed envisioning a scientific picture of what Atlantis and its people may have been like. Publisher's website: http://sbprabooks.com/JeremyGosnell

I love when I pick up a book thinking
By Jason L Huff
I love when I pick up a book thinking, by title or by the cover, that it is about one thing and it turns out to (in the case, my surprise) be something different. I wasn't sure what to think about Jeremy Gosnell's "The Terminal", or whether or not I would even enjoy it. I didn't know it's genre, I didn't even have a cover to judge. Perhaps this worked in its favor. Immediately after reading the prolouge I was intrigued and immersed in the world of The Terminal. I also had no idea I would be reading a sci-fi action thriller.

The story is vibrant and full of energy. The author has created a world that is full of life and excitement that puts its foot on the gas and doesn't let up. It centers around a mysterious vertical cave in the Bahamas that is strangely calling people to it and an impending cataclysmic event happening in Yellowstone National Park. The story switches viewpoints of several characters, all of which come to life brilliantly, each in their own non-related events. What lurks beneath Dean's Blue Hole near Long Island, Bahamas? What is the Terminal? and Is the world nearing another extinction-level event? And how do they all relate to one-another.

At first, I had a time trying to figure out how things were connected, but eventually we get to the connection and from that point on I couldn't read fast enough. The Terminal is fascinating, blending real-life fact with science fiction creating a believable space to which the characters and scenes create a vivid scene in your mind's eye. You want to know what the motives are for people being attracted to Dean's Blue Hole, and what exactly is the relationship between it and this impending disaster. I would even go so far as to put it on the scale with some of the better disaster movies I've seen.

The author is quite knowledgeable about the subject matter and uses quite a few technical terms, which I didn't always understand. However, it didn't detract from the intensity in which the story was drawing me in. Gosnell does a great job at exploring human-nature and their struggle between self-preservation and the need to want to help others survive. The reader spends a lot of time flip-flopping between locations which can be disorienting but eventually are sucked into the story, eagerly wanting to know the fate of the characters. The non-fictional elements make this story believable and allows for the fictional elements to take hold of the imagination more easily. The Terminal uses science fiction elements and mysterious events to tie together a well thought out and intriguing story.

If you are looking for a good action-thriller with sci-fi elements, then this is a book you should read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, licking up each page and thirsty for more. It had all the elements I love about reading, great characters, fast action, building up to a great climax. The Terminal delivers on all fronts.

Momentous
By Merrick Hansen
Gosnell opens The Terminal with an intriguing scene – a diver, on the verge of some new deep sea discovery in a fact-based deep blue hole. (There are actually these types of things around the world and they frighten me. Anything could be down there.) Gosnell takes a factual phenomena and speculates – what could be down there? Or in this case, who? Now, imagine that in one of these deep blue holes, we find a link to a lost city.

The description itself is rather bland compared to the actual story. Jeremy Gosnell has honestly written a spectacular Vernian-inspired science fiction tale. I don’t want to give away key plot points but holy cow did this guy keep me reading. Not only does he have an amazing and original idea here, but he tells this story in a way that feels like it could be plausible with a few tweaks in reality (very minor tweaks).

The ocean is largely unexplored. Human curiosity has no limit but our technology currently does – but Gosnell plays on this curiosity in such a way as to make me feel like I did when I read my first Jules Verne novel. (See: full of awe and possibility.) He also examines human nature and the directions it takes us in. He turns a mirror on us and shows us what we could become, given our current treatment of the world around us.

{My Thoughts} – I’m not sure where to begin with this book. It was a different kind of read that was more out of my element then usual.

It starts off talking about a subadiver named Eric that disappeared. Then jumped into talking about a researcher named Allison that wanted to prove alien life had somehow helped to develop the Lost City of Atlantis. Anyways, it was a bit out there, and there were like three stories taking place throughout the entire book, at one point four stories.

Towards the end of the book the author found a beautiful way to tie it all together. It was wrapped up nicely with a pretty bow, it even left room for a possible sequel if they’d be interested in writing one.

I was unsure of my thoughts throughout most of the book. However, I did have a high desire to find out what was going to happen through the story line and was able to finish it in a timely manner because I had been pulled into the pages. I absolutely enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more by this particular author in the near future.

~~After the Time Before~~
By USN Chief, Ret..VT Town
Book 1 of this trilogy offers a refreshing twist on life after an apocalyptic event. Taking place 322 years after an apocalypse, Ashley finds herself always questioning the 'whys' of everything! The Elders are the governing body of the Island which is located in the NW part of the country. Jobs are assigned to the nearly one thousand residents around the age of thirteen. Mason and Ashley have been friends since their time in school. As a result of a death, both of their futures change dramatically. That is the backdrop for this most interesting and intriguing story.

There is a lot of undercurrent running under the surface of the main plot. There are questions of faith, good versus evil and the promise of hope surfaces more than once. Several parts really impressed me and one was the 'hierarchy' that the Elders strived to attain. The most impressive to me was the fact that the author somehow managed to come up with an absolutely new twist on life after an apocalypse. I call this after the time before! Dare I say 'Oh Ashby'?

This is a well written novel with characters that blend well together, the plot is well defined and the ending leaves the reader waiting for the next book. Lots of unanswered questions for the reader to ponder for the next few months.

Most highly recommended.

Another winner!
By sgperry
This is Stephanie Erickson' s fourth book and she just keeps getting better and, better. This story takes place 322 years after the end of civilization. A small group of survivors live on a small island off the coast. They are ruled by a group of Elders who dictate what everyone does and who they are matched with. Ashley is a girl who has been matched with a man who is next in line to be an Elder. She also is curious about everything and questions everything. The Elders aren't happy with all the questions. They like to keep secrets from everyone. But Ashley is very, very curious about the mainland. Is it still there or is it gone, as the Elders would have you believe. If it still exists, are there people there? Wandering around the island she finds that the Elders have been hiding a canoe, two actually. So she and her friend Mason take off to find the mainland.

There's a lot more to the story than that but I don't want to give anything away. I loved this book! The characters came alive. The twists and turns kept me on my toes. I was constantly saying to myself "didn't see that coming". I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, a little sci fi, and surprises. My one complaint is that September is so far away. Write faster Stephanie!

Holy plot twists, batman!
By Heather
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
So post post apocalyptic books really are not my thing, but the description of the book caught my attention. I was sucked into the book within the first few chapters, and really enjoyed the characters, the writing style was great and the author did a great job of explaining what was going on. The book kept me in suspense and the plot twists, well let’s just say that you will not see what’s coming, coming! Just when you think you figure it out, plot twist! I will be awaiting the next books in the series.

Angel is a surprising spit-fire!!
By Jen with Moments in West FL
Angel is a surprising spit-fire of a genetic creation...a rare breed...which makes her that much more valuable and coveted by her caretakers and the Gran. She is sexual and is a little fireball of fury and cunning stealth when needed. Her make up is complex and makes her very unique indeed. After the betrayal of the one she grew to love and the loss of her father figure, she leaves on a journey to become a human slave to the Gran. The Gran are a catlike humanoid species that use genetically engineered humans as slave/workers. They are primal animals and feel superior to all ape-like species. Angel, having caught the eye of the leader of the ship, quickly learns she will be a sexual slave and used for breeding...even though she can't reproduce....doesn't mean she wont enjoy it or put on a good show ;) The book has a heat that catches you by surprise as much as it makes you laugh at some moments. I will be looking forward to the following books in the series to see how Angel fairs in this new situation.

Zero Gravity Sex & Genetics - A Great Combo!
By K S Banks
As an avid fan of Travis Luedke’s Nightlife series, I’m familiar with his dark, intense dramas with smatterings of wry comic remarks. All of which is sandwiched between heavy doses of even darker sexual escapades , with quite a lot of tinges of BDSM thrown in to keep all the vampires, shifters and “others” on their toes.
This latest venture of his is into a future, where orbiting scientists are creating clone/drone workers for a race of alien Cats, in accordance to a “peace” treaty. Angelina, “Angel”, is not a worker drone. She is special, even secret! She does not fit in anywhere … and she is constantly looking for what all of us are looking for. Love and validation are what she seeks!
This is just the beginning of her journey … existing in secret, getting kidnapped by the Cats, trying to stay alive long enough to have a life. As usual, the author takes us on a steamy, dark, twisting journey of a read. And I loved it!

A wild tale of aliens, space ships and a nymphomaniac clone
By T.W. Barton
This book is intended for NC17 and above. This is the first in a multi-episodic tale of a space opera romance.

Humans made a mistake.

In our quest to explorer space and prove whether or not there is other intelligent life out there, we found what we were looking for or more accurately, they found us!

Using our intelligence to jump around space, we jumped to the attention of the Gran. A cat race evolved to walk on two legs and incredible intelligent. They have as much in common with our cat species as well...Alien to Sigourney Weaver. They are aggressive, focused, and unhindered by such human things as emotions. They are a warrior species and their goal is to find, overtake, and enslave other beings to do their work.

The Gran quickly take advantage of the unexpected encounter with an intelligent race that will make the perfect slaves. They marshal their forces and send an attack armada to earth.

It's a long and bloody battle that ends when a treaty is signed.

Out in space is the Nugene space station. The result of the treaty where scientists create human clones, destine for enslavement to the Gran.

One of those scientists has been trying to find the answer. The answer to a question that the people back on earth should be asking. How can we free the human race without total destruction?

Angel 6.0

She's the answer, maybe. Angle 6.0 is a clone but nothing like the other clones. She's a hybrid and she's supposed to stay hidden when the Gran come to the station. Problem is they showed up early and she's dancing in the Zero G.

Captain Cronin, the Gran representative has seen something he wants and he will not be denied. Carver the human liaison to the Gran tries to explain that his request is not possible but Cronin will not be denied and is willing to do anything to get what he wants.

Carver doesn't want to lose Angel. They have a very special relationship. Angle has learned many things from him, mostly in the bedroom. Angle's no push over. She knows every square inch of the space station and easily evades the Gran warriors trying to capture her.

Cronin's patience has worn out and he's shut the space station down, locked up all the humans and called in reinforcements.

At first Angel's having fun, not as much fun as sex, for which she has an almost insatiable appetite for but she's forgotten a very important fact about the Gran that will point out her hiding location and set the wheels in motion for a disastrous confrontation.

Captain Cronin has seen that this clone is different and he wants her to breed more like her. A special breed. Whisked away on the Gran ship she wakes to a nightmare. Not only is she the concubine of Cronin, but is expected to breed with a criminal, a criminal whose hygiene hasn't been a priority. Forced to have sex with the criminal as Cronin plays the voyeur (not that she minds much) she learns that things are not quite as she'd thought and that the humans on Earth may not be as informed as she’s been told.

A wild tale of aliens, space ships and a nymphomaniac clone that has a hunger for sex and pain and not always in that order. The sex is hot and heavy through this book that gives new meaning to the term happiness is a purring kitty.

Conor Night, the world’s only surviving necromancer, is used to having bad days. After all, he’s spent the last few years as a minor pawn in the Game of Houses while keeping one foot planted firmly in the grave. But between the job offer he can’t refuse from a wizard he doesn’t trust, and the appearance of a cult bent on sending him to the afterlife, his days are about to get a whole lot worse.

He’s used to the threat of death. Death making threats? That’s new.

First book was great, this one is better!
By Jim Mercer
After reading the first book in the series (Dead of Night), I was hooked. Fortunately, the sequel here was ready to go... and I read it immediately following book 1.

If anything, the sequel was better than the first book! (Which is saying something, because that book was really good. :) )

This book creates a certain amount of chaotic closure to everything in the first book. Things aren't as seemingly clear-cut as they were in book 1... forgive me for saying this but "The plot thickens" in book 2. You find yourself - much like the central character, Conor - wondering who the good guys are, and who the baddies really are!

A good, riveting read, and one very much worth having.

Conor's scrounging, but finds the truth.
By MelHay
*This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com, at my request.

Flat broke as Ms. Red broke her promise to Conor, he's on the scurry to find and purchase his drugs to stay alive. Finally, Conor finds a person, with help of a friend, to purchase from, but it doesn't end well. Another group has been searching for Conor, the longest living and practicing necromancer, to do a job. The boss of this group wants to use Conor to steal something, again, and play against the Houses. Conor feels the chase of Death as he works to earn money and the medicines he needs, and maybe even a way to earn time of invisibility to Death. Death's not willing to give up easily, even threatening his friends.

Jeff is back to voice Conor and all characters. As always I settle in for a great, entertaining listen. Jeff has no troubles acting out Conor and others as they fight through this world. Coughing, and all sorts of small extras are a pleasure to have added to their various voices. The dark laughter of the mask catches my ears with the feel Jeff adds to it for us, it feels like the darkness that it possess.

With this book, I know the term 'ghost' is meant as an assassin in the magical world. Not the ghost as in dead and a see-through, floating soul left behind.

Conor is still struggling for money and meds. He's got a score to settle as he wasn't paid from his last job, as promised. This leaves him scrounging but also gives a reason to take a job he normally wouldn't, for a bit of due revenge for stiffing him on payment.

Conor has a few things to fight through in this book, and they clash against each other at times. He has Death after him as Conor's been alive to long. Death is sending his Reapers after him, getting in the way as Conor tries to live on, earn money, and find his medicine. Death also gives Conor an ultimatum, to come with him or he'll take another in his place - a soul for a soul. Conor's one fear, to die, and he's running from it as best he can. Then Conor has to face the woman he has started to fall for and who stiffed him on payment, Jin. Conor is hired to steal the orb from her, again. Once he gets close, he learns more about Jin's reasons with how things ended on the last case, and where she stands now. He'll have many after him.

I like that we learn about necromancers a bit here. That they usually don't live more than a year or two, which makes Conor the longest living and practicing necromancer. Cool. This makes him valuable and wanted, by people to do jobs and death because he's escaped him for so long.

Oh Conor. His tools of his trade are dangerous. Especially the mask, it feels worse than the dice to me. When Conor uses the mask he makes a deal that is a bit hefty. Six souls. It wants six souls. Ouch. There is a protection yet a danger to the mask. I'm curious about it and wondering how it works.

We finally get to see Tarakona! Oh to see him! WOW! Cool. And what the orb really is... Oh my. I'm not telling you as you have to find out on your own. But he leaves Conor with a warning in the end. A warning that opens the world up to so much possibility.

I found I liked the world and story in this book better. I think I understand it better going into this book and got to see Conor running or fighting something at all times. There are a few turns with those after him that have different reactions that Conor, or I, expected.

Action & harsh humor in a thrilling mix!
By DabOfDarkness
Note: This is Book 2 in the series and can probably be read on it’s own as the story does remind readers of pertinent things that happened in Book 1 with enough detail to understand this book on its own.

This story happens perhaps 2 years after the events of Book 1, Dead of Night. Conor Night is still working as a Ghost doing the odd bit of thievery and the occasional mayhem and murder. He’s barely able to afford his illegal cancer meds. Technically, he’s dying. It isn’t pretty. But it does give him the abilities of a necromancer.

In Book 1, we learned a bit about the Game of Houses when Conor was hired by one to steal from another and ended up protecting a scion of one of these powerful Houses. Mostly, these Houses work in the background, their leaders being powerful magic users. The average public doesn’t know of their existence even though their lives are often shaped by the machinations of these powerful entities. Now, Conor is once again sucked back into this world that he tried so hard to walk away from. Conor is offered the job of stealing back the item that was stolen and restolen in Book 1, a large stone with magical properties. Taking on this job could mean pissing off not one, but two of the Houses.

On top of that, Conor is being hunted by a cult, the Necros. They are hell-bent on sending him to the afterlife and they say they were sent by Death itself. Conor doesn’t doubt this, not after the odd things he has seen and sensed with his magical dice and bone mask. Conor isn’t ready for the Other Side yet. Frankly, he is afraid of what awaits him there.

Once again, we have an excellent mix of action, mystery, reflection, and character development. Conor is joined by two friends he made in Book 1 – Amos and Prythi. There’s plenty of gun play, necromancer magic, and Prythi’s computer hacking skills. Amos is his usual charming self with colorful tales of his tom-cat ways and even more colorful language. He has his moments of solid friendship that make him lovable. My one quibble with this book is with Prythi; quite frankly, she sounds and acts too much like Dani from Book 1. Conor even makes note of that more than once. But even with that nod from the author via the main character, I would have preferred that either Dani was around or that Prythi had her own distinct characteristics.

Even with that one criticism, I still really enjoyed the hell out of this book. Conor has this past that he isn’t always proud of and he spends much of his remaining life trying to make up for it. It gets good and interesting when he has to make some tough, and sometimes questionable, calls to do so. He’s a fascinating character and the fact that he isn’t all superhero muscles and good looks just makes him that much more engaging.

Towards the end, there was this reveal that I was totally not expecting. In retrospect, it was completely obvious and I was pleased that the author kept me distracted with Necros, bone masks, and Amos’s tales of his ex-wife so that I didn’t see this big thing until it hit me between the eyes. And, yes, this big thing is pretty darn awesome. The ending definitely raises the stakes for Book 3, which I am eagerly awaiting.

I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

Narration: Jeff Hays set a new standard for awesome narration with Book 1 in this series and he does not disappoint with the narration of this book. His range for male and female characters is pretty incredible, having some of the most realistic female voices for a male narrator. Also, he goes the extra mile with making phone call conversations sound like half the conversation is taking place via phone and also the choir of voices that reside in the bone mask (rather spooky!). Add to that the voice of Death and the voice of Conor’s new employer for this escapade and we have an excellent vocal performance!

Medicine for the Dead (Children of the Drought), by Arianne 'Tex' Thompson

The story of Appaloosa Elim continues.
Two years ago, the crow-god Marhuk sent his grandson to Sixes.
Two nights ago, a stranger picked up his gun and shot him.
Two hours ago, the funeral party set out for the holy city of Atali'Krah, braving the wastelands to bring home the body of Dulei Marhuk.

Out in the wastes, one more corpse should hardly make a difference. But the blighted landscape has been ravaged by drought, twisted by violence, and warped by magic - and no-one is immune. Vuchak struggles to keep the party safe from monsters, marauders, and his own troubled mind. Weisei is being eaten alive by a strange illness. And fearful, guilt-wracked Elim hopes he's only imagining the sounds coming from Dulei's coffin.

As their supplies dwindle and tensions mount, the desert exacts a terrible price from its pilgrims - one that will be paid with the blood of the living, and the peace of the dead.

Hold fast: there is more to come. And it's great fun
By Merlin Wilson
The author states in her acknowledgments that the second book is where the rubber meets the road. I can say, without question, that her statement is true and correct for 'Medicine for the Dead'. And if this is where the tires grip and the whole wonderful machine busts into motion, we can expect some truly tight, interesting and engaging fiction from Arianne 'Tex' Thompson in the future.

Where 'Sixes' was at times meandering in revealing this new world, 'Medicine' is near masterful in weaving subtle, ornate glimpses of the humming organic clockwork behind the story. Each transition between characters and scenes makes sense and drives the reader forward, needing to know how they will inevitably intersect. Each tragedy or setback tests each geographically separated group of characters and makes the reader wonder 'will this be it? Will this one thing finally prove too much?' While it's clear that Thompson spent months, if not years, creating the border town of Sixes just so, the worldbuilding that she gave to the rest of her new milieu truly shines like a hot blue star. The tidbits revealed about the lost tribes, hidden powers, lost children, the feeding habits and language peculiarities of fishmen, and the rich religious backgrounds fill the story to capacity. And that is certainly not a bad thing. In fact, it leads you onward, desperate to know and understand more about this new, interesting world, people, and story.

The story certainly benefits from having cut down on the number of characters involved. Streamlining the points of view to those we know from the previous novel (as well as a few fascinating newcomers) really makes 'Medicine' a sleeker read. It further allows Thompson to focus on the individual head-space of each of these characters, to flesh them out. She does so masterfully with internal dialogue, struggle, and deep introspection leading to believable character changes. It's clear now that this story is about Elim and the wheel of characters around him. But it's not just him, though that would be interesting and engaging enough on its own. It's also about the tests of faith for Weisei and Vuchak, for Dia, for Shea, and for some incredibly surprising characters.

What really struck me was the quality of Elim's struggle of how to remain true to himself while allowing himself to be changed as he learned more going forward. It reminded me keenly of the struggle Huckleberry Finn dealt with while traveling down the river with Jim. Should I do the right thing, even if everything I've been taught tells me that, normally, it would damn me? Why does it damn me if these people I'm helping are real people, not demons? That struggle, the strong desire to want to do the right thing when it's so hard to, that is something anyone can relate to. It's a universal struggle made engaging and fresh by the author's careful hand.

I can't go into too much more detail without ruining surprises and gripping instances of wonder. Suffice it to say that I neglected my own muse a little to continue devouring this novel. I can say, without question, 'Medicine' is now one of my favorite books, one that I will reread happily. There are not many books that I pick up these days that I can say are put into regular rotation.

In closing, I can't wait to see what Tex comes out with next. She's laid the groundwork for a truly gripping follow-up. Definitely make the time to read 'Medicine': the rewards are great.

Who can prevail against droughtworld?
By sandyt
The title of this book refers to acts of kindness, well-intentioned, loving acts, which make “food for the living, and medicine for the dead.” Perhaps, in a larger sense, it means honoring one's community, one's ancestors, one's religion.

The characters in this tale of struggle are trying to do the right thing. In spite of deadly diseases, in spite of wounds that are slowly killing them, in spite of the danger of attack by bandits and monstrous wild animals, they struggle to do their duty, and to be moral about it. They pray continually. They are surrounded by the dead. The dead, including one of our main characters, come back to life, or at least seem to.

The world, shared by living and dead, is starved by drought and damned by violence and plague. The ghosts of murdered peoples haunt those who are struggling to help their communities survive. This is the Old West after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have swarmed in, done their worst, and gone. No one can dare venture into this land without the risk of death; by violence, by thirst, or by wracking painful disease. I once read a book which argued that the world's enduring religions were all born at times of chaos and collapse. In this book, that rings true as our numerous protagonists rely on faith and duty in the total absence of anything else to cling to. The book is thick with references to beliefs and deities. The title of the series, “Children of the Drought”, speaks to the characters’ sense of powerlessness and dependence on things they don’t understand.

Though the world is dense with violence, we don’t see it happen. We see only the consequences. Two protagonists separately find seven drowned “Ikwei” or “sundowners”, chained to the bottom, polluting the only water source for miles, but who killed them? Who shaved their hair, pulled out their fingernails, and made sure their divine mother could not find them? And who haunts the dark water even now? Did the smashed, looted camp belong to the drowned? We are left to wonder at this “meticulously vicious” act, as at others in the present and past.

I think the land itself is the real protagonist here. The land, along with the drought, presses forward toward its own terrifying destiny. Our characters struggle, hope, and pray, but we are left with no assurance that their heroism will be rewarded.

Like its predecessor “One Night in Sixes”, this novel asks a lot of the reader. But the reader is also rewarded by a beautifully plotted story, full of details that make an imagined world seem real. Separate chapters follow our heroes and heroines until we approach the final, deadly confrontation. Then the pace picks up, the characters lose their tenuous shreds of control over events, and the story switches back and forth at a relentlessly accelerating pace.

Also like its predecessor, this story leaves everything unresolved. We’ll have to wait for the third volume. Personally, I hope the author is hard at work.

Fishmen, crow people, carnivorous deer...what more do you want?
By Laura Maisano
Medicine for the Dead is, in short, a series of separate journeys where the excrement hits the fan for everyone all in the last part of the book. It continues where Sixes left off to tell us what happens to Elim, Weisei, and Vuchak, as well as several other of the inhabitants of Sixes. Although, thankfully, none of this happens in Sixes so we're not burdened by all the tertiary characters.

To be honest, Sixes had me lost at parts because things were not clear (to me). While Tex's beautiful wordsmithing is mesmerizing, it takes effort to unpack the true meaning sometimes. Heck, she speaks in metaphor in real life, so I shouldn't expect differently in text. BUT, listen to the but guys, Medicine doesn't suffer from that little bit of confusion. In fact, it cleared up all the confusion I had at the end of Sixes. Part of me wishes I had understand all that was going down with Sil and the natives back then, but the revelations now made me go "whoah." Medicine streamlines all the great stuff about Sixes into a few different character POVs and packs a mean punch. I had a great deal of feels toward the end, and the revelations in the last few pages made me want book three like yesterday.

I seriously read this 450 page book in two days, and I have a three-year-old. Let that sink in. Medicine moves fast, the pacing is spot on, and there's a lot of action/fear/danger/tension keeping the pages turning. Each separate journey has stuff going for it, and when they converge together, you read faster and faster. I still want an audio revision with Nathan Fillion doing Mal Reynolds and reading in his westerny awesomeness.

Now, the best thing about this book. Fishmen. Yes, the fishmen. Tex creates this interesting and unique race and I just want to read more scenes with them in it. They're alien enough to be different, but similar enough to empathize with. They change skin color like squids, talk with their hands, speak a quasi-French language, and eat meals in massive feeding frenzy competitions. Who wouldn't like that?

I'm beginning to ramble because I loved the book so much. So, long story short. If you're having a little difficulty with Sixes, stick through it. The payoff is worth it. I asked for more magic and weird, and I got a LOT more magic and an unparalleled amount of weird. I'd say to be careful what you ask for, except that I'm happy with what I got.

trying to suck people in as well
By Berni
These are three lovely little stories, all with younger protagonists. I really got a chuckle out of the one involving the mall - I've often felt that it is deadly, trying to suck people in as well. This would be a perfect gift for a teenager who feels she doesn't quite fit in.

What a fun romp!
By Bevi Dobb
Read it in a day while recovering from a mild illness. Riveting, horrifying, thrilling, fast-paced, good character development. Somewhat like the Jurassic Park plot, but divergent and imaginatively different to sustain fascinated interest. Well done.

I bought this based on reviews here at Amazon. Yeah, I agree. A fun romp. Definitely a good beach or poolside read!

Six Stars!
By Laplock
This is a great action, adventure thrill ride! I agree with the reviewer that said this would make a good movie. The author is very talented, and writes a gripping tale. It captured my interest, from the start, like the earilier works of James Rollins, before his writing became so mundane. I look forward to this author's next book!

Fairly good story.
By froggypenguin
To start, let me say that I got this for free, so with that in mind, this was a pretty good story. For those of you, like me, that despise bad grammatical errors, maybe this is not the book for you. The premise is a thriller about monsters. The writing is not as good as it could be, with lots of repetitive descriptions and fake words. If that doesn't bother you, then by all means, read it.

There is nothing "wayward" about the quality of this book.......
By Lee Be Three
The story contained in this book is as interesting as the author's name. It contains all of the elements that a good novel dare possess: a well thought out, diverse and complex plot - interesting characters that are introduced and developed well - scene descriptions that paint word pictures, and thus place you into the reality of the setting - chapter by chapter cravings that keep you reading on, and subsequently losing sleep in the quest for what next takes place - emotional swings that have your nails scratching deep into the edge of your Kindle......and so much more. This book leaves you WANTING more! Long live the good King Landri Altard in many a Cordillera sequel. A hearty "Done well" and hear-hear to "Well done"!!

A Classroom Favorite
By Mrs. H
I am a fourth grade teacher who utilizes Book Clubs (small reading groups of 7-10 students) in my classroom to supplement my Language Arts curriculum. I am always looking for new books to have my students read in small groups, or as a core literature unit for the whole class. Books I choose for the kids have to peak their interest, so that students are motivated to read the book week after week. They also need to have a complex plot, so that students are able to have meaningful discussions with each other in their groups each week. I heard about L. Benedict Dunn's book and thought I would read it to see if it could work in my classroom. I absolutely LOVED Cordillera! It is not only a great read for adults, but its content is appropriate for upper grade elementary students. The plot will allow my students to utilize various comprehension strategies, such as inference, cause and effect, making generalizations, comparing and contrasting, and identifying story elements. I can also use it to discuss themes in literature, as there are plenty of themes to discuss in the book (courage, forgiveness, overcoming difficulties, jealousy, friendship, etc.). The possibilities are endless! I have already purchased a class set. Well done, Mr. Dunn!

Brilliant Storytelling!
By Amazon Customer
I began reading Cordillera: The Wayward Kin by L. Dunn as soon as it was delivered to my Kindle- and I am LOVING it. Brilliant storytelling. This is a breath of fresh air to this genre! The characters are interesting, and multi-dimensional. I have a feeling some of them will surprise and shock us in the end. I love the concept of the story, and how each chapter is a different land within the Kingdom of Cordillera. The cities/villages/towns are imaginative and each more unique than the last. Just when I start to love the characters in one area of the Kingdom, I am transported to the next-which makes me feel for the characters experiencing just this. I cannot wait to see where L. Dunn is taking this story- and by the character development and writing style, I am sure it won't disappoint!

Although a work in progress for this novice author, D. M. Ficke did a good job developing the plot, creating an exciting climax, and giving a hint of what may happen in the sequel.
