Best Episode So Far!

This is the third book in the The Mighty First series, and I think it's the most powerful and gut-wrenching episode thus far. Mark Bordner brings us closer to his lead characters, Minerva and Mark and their compatriots. But he also takes us into the minds of the evil Storians, and that evil will chill your soul.

The Storians employ a true "scorched earth" policy, and they think nothing of using subterfuge and traitors to turn the Earthlings against themselves. It was particularly intriguing to me to read their rationalizations for their cruelty. The reader roots for the Earthlings to prevail but still respects the Storians for their cleverness and determination. Much of the action in this episode takes place in the heartland of America, a suitable location for the struggle to rescue Earth from this dark force.

The battle scenes are vivid, with a dizzingly fast pace. Just as one assumes the worst is over, something else happens that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Mark Bordner is also showing new sophistication in this third episode with characters who grab your heartstrings with their courage, generosity, and loyalty. Minerva is a powerful role model, as she grows from naive young recruit to a married woman in love to a battle-tested warrior. This episode ends with a slightly unsettling twist, and I can't wait to see how Minerva will mature from her latest challenge.

All of the episodes of The Mighty First have been great reads, but this was the best one yet. I received an advanced reading copy for this review.

The Brutal Toll of War

Synopsis:

The battle against the Storians for central North America continues with the third installment of the The Mighty First saga. The First Global Marine Division has been hurled into the thick of the battle for Ohio. Yet Emperor Grozet is not giving up without a fight. He strikes hard at Earth’s defenses in general and at Minerva in particular, leaving her struggling with demons of her own. Someone tried to kill her father, and Mark, her husband, has been listed as killed in action. She is grief stricken and angry as the war both rages around her and within her.

Review:

Mark Bordner continues the saga of the First Global Marine Division in The Mighty First Episode 3: Sorrow of Enon Pass. Gears shift in this part of the story, and we see the toll the war is taking on the people. The emotional impacts fall hard and fast on Master Sergeant Minerva Carreno—an attempted on the life of her parents and seemingly loosing her husband in battle are heaped on top of an intense battlefield situation with an enemy pulling out all the stops to regain the initiative.

In this book, the author shows us the brutal toll that war takes on the soldier as it grows more and more desperate. Mark Bordner captures the intrigue of black operations without getting bogged down in the technical details any more than is necessary. At the same time the action is harder and faster, while the rests are darker and more grief stricken.

In the future, the prosperous world is at peace. There's not even been a police action for over a hundred years. The last combat veteran died long ago. Military training programs are more along the lines of basic security outings.

"Her mother immediately came around the bed and took Minerva into her embrace. Being there was what she had needed so badly, to finally release her anguish. The pain, the anger, the utter sense of complete loss flooded out against her mother’s bosom. Cleo sniffled and gazed out the window, his jaw tight, eyes shining with moisture that he would not allow to progress into tears. He had feared this, but more than that, he feared the day that might come when it was his own daughter who would not be coming home."

Mark Bordner continues the wonderful science fiction adventure in The Mighty First: Episode Two. As a master storyteller, he weaves an intricate plot, peopled with his realistic characters.

This was a fun and interesting read

This was a fun and interesting read. It's not my usual genre, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who likes fiction or fantasy of any sort. It flows well and I did not often find myself slipping out of the "reading zone." There are layers to the story and characters and it can be appreciated on more than one level. Each chapter/section covers a different smaller adventure within a larger continuous story, and these served a similar function as the short stories I usually read during my commute to work. Like the previous reviewer, I can also imagine sharing this book aloud with an older child and using the stories as a jumping-off point for some good discussions.

A Pleasurable and Fun Read

This book feels like a story that a mother might share with her child during the course of many bedtimes. It is a charming book that moves from one fairly tale moment to another resulting in a greater, more satisfying, story. The book felt sweet, wistful, and innocent. I read this the span of several hours and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Regarding my rating... The book came to my attention through the author's father. I am a reader, generally going through 3-5 fantasy / science fiction books a week. Like movies, I re-read books I like and I don't finish books that don't capture my attention. A 4 star means I enjoyed it, I will probably re-read it again at a later date, and some of my friends may enjoy it as well.

Folk Tales of Vasilissa, Retold in Glowing Prose

This is a lovely retelling of a group of Russian folk tales linked together by the central character, Vasilissa, with her nemeses Baba Yaga, a menacing crone, and Koschei the evil warrior. The "Circle of Salt" in the title is used as a protective magical device to shield her from their attacks.

The story is told from Vasilissa's point of view, as a memoir. On the first page, Vasilissa introduces herself in the second paragraph and gives a very short overview of her life.

Folk tales often present marvelous, miraculous, and magical events happening to ordinary people. This is a truly wonderful story from the flip side: Vasilissa is a fairy, somewhat indifferent to mortal lives, who wields great power but who must learn compassion and understanding through serious mistakes, punishment, and hard trials. She has frightening adventures, meets interesting characters from shallow to deep, and there are moments of tremendous beauty. She starts out rather cold and becomes much more sympathetic through the course of the book.

But oddly, that second paragraph - which reassures us that she has been through a great deal - functions to somewhat undermine the emotional impact of the story, acting as just a little bit of a spoiler. There are a number of comments where she continues the tale as a memory rather than an experience, placing her interconnected stories solidly in the realm of fairy tale, and therefore just slightly removed from true intimacy or immediacy. Vasilissa is the person we are truly to know in the story, but since she makes it out alive enough to recount her adventures in retrospect, there is little fear that she will be utterly destroyed, and that is the most human thing about us: we fear oblivion more than death.

So this story does not really have the emotional immediacy that would have completely captivated my heart or flooded my dreams. But, if you are in the mood for something that feels like a true fairy tale, Circle of Salt is perfect. I'd love to read more by this author!

Good read.

Heads above most of the post apoc stuff coming out here on Amazon. Good story, believable characters, realistic scenarios for the most part. I have only a few important criticisms. One; the female characters are not fleshed out, and only two have important roles in the community. Two; many passages are repeated frequently, as if the book was meant to be in instalments, with a synopsis at the beginning of each instalment- those repetitions are boring and unnecessary. Three; there is a need for editing out errors that look like they may have been created by an automatic word suggestion, that inserts extra words, which makes for some confusing sentences. Not enough to break continuity, but enough to be annoying. I would have scored three and a half stars if I could (I tend to score tougher than many on here do), but definitely a book worth reading if you like this genre. I really appreciated that it did not go into endless rants about how the world is not prepared, and why society would break down (most people reading these stories have heard it all a thousand times) - it just got on with the story. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

A Good Story Not Well Executed

I struggled between 2 and 3 stars. I settled on 2 although I will say this is a good End of the World story. A master AI has taken charge of virtually every computer in the world and is duped into shutting itself - and every other computer in the world - down. Goodbye power grid. Goodbye virtually every modern convenience. A group of farmers (and a few others) in northwestern Illinois band together to stave off starvation, bad guys and the remnants of the U.S. military. As I said, a really good story. However, a story is only as good as it is told. Here, the negatives overwhelmed the positives. First, the editing was horrendous. Grammatical errors were everywhere and some were inexcusable. "We had to convince themselves . . " Ouch. Missing words, repeated words, poor sentence structure. I think many of these books are dictated using voice recognition software and are just never cleaned up. No one would actually write this out - by hand or on a computer - and not catch some of the glaring errors. There was also a lot of repetition and plot review that was completely unnecessary. It felt like this was written for people with anterograde amnesia who can't form new memories and have to be reminded of the same thing after a few pages - or sometimes a few paragraphs.

The author's own political biases are an integral part of the story. That is hugely annoying. If I wanted to read a catechism on libertarianism, I'd go to a blog. Don't really want to pay to be preached at. I also found the references to elections being "unnecessary distractions" and the suggestion that a caste system is the natural order of things to be rather offensive. The military is characterized as irredeemable fascists. The politicians are evil and are written as silly caricatures and are completely unbelievable. The good guys are exactly that - good. In every way. In fact, they are perfect. And boooooring. The only character who was even mildly interesting was the computer billionaire who caused the destruction of society as we know it. He also founded Scientology - but it isn't called that - which is ridiculed and also made evil.

There are a cadre of brilliant engineers - known as the wizards - who just happen to live in BFE Illinois and are ready to develop marvelous machines for the newly emerged nation - or kingdom, or whatever it turns out to be. That was actually the best part of the story, but again some major flaws. The wizards build 20mm cannon based on some diagrams they find in the old library. I'm willing to buy that. But where do the shells come from that these cannon use? Building explosive shells that will fire through an automatic cannon is not something that can be done by hand, and there is no production line to manufacture them. I don't mind suspending disbelief, but give me something I can pretend could happen. Also, the research (or lack of it) was bothersome. The 20mm shells are described as the size of grapefruit. Huh? 20mm is just over one half inch. The diameter of these shells would be about the same as a nickel. That's a big exploding bullet, but nowhere near the size of a grapefruit.

I give the author credit for putting this out there. I also think there is something to build on. I'll buy the next one to see if it gets better. I hope it does. More editing, less politics and some ambiguity in the characters would go a long way to improving the telling of a good story.

If you liked Stirling's Emberverse, this one could be for you too!

A wonderful and very difficult take on future American history, done from a more science fiction standpoint. We are at some point in the near future when the computers fail us. The New America is the BAD GUY territory of Eastern Illinois, run by a psychotic dictator. On the other hand, shades of S.M.Stirling's Emberverse saga, the GOOD GUYS have selected a elected Monarchy, located south and west of Decatur, and its odiferous Midland(nee Staley) soybean factory. The Okaw County officials have chosen Phil Hamilton as the Founding Farmer, and his teenaged sons, AJ and Sam are set to drive the story forward. Fascinating concepts, to build around the grain silos, creating the equivalent of the motte and bailey castle. Converting old crop dusters into Stuka dive bombers, and bulldozers into armored tanks.
This appears to have possibly been done previously in episodes, as the beginning of several of the chapters, recapitulates the previous chapter's story lines.
But that minor glitch aside, Carter is a great storyteller, in the epic mode.
I do have a couple of questions..what about Decatur Signal Depot, and the Amish Community near Sullivan? Yes, I am an army brat who lived in Bethany Illinois(Okaw High School) as well as in the COs huge three story house at the Signal Depot before it was deactivated and made into a Firestone operation, and we had all our tomatoes canned for a penny each by the Amish near Sullivan.
I think it would be fascinating to include the Amish in this story. I don't recall ever reading a science fiction story that included the Amish, so this would be a first.
Please keep on writing. You are excellent at it.

Bloodmarked - Definately a Must Read!

Where to begin? The storyline and characters are so engaging, getting drawn into the story isn't even an option. You're getting sucked in. I loved how the main character, Greta was portrayed. She starts out as a normal college student with a seemingly normal life, and then she's suddenly thrown into a struggle that she's somehow the focus of. She finds out that she's not as normal as she thought, that the WORLD isn't as normal as she'd thought. She's angry, hurt, confused... Her reactions, her frustrations, her angry retorts... they solidify the character completely.

Her protector is a mystery at first, other than telling her "I'm here to protect you." Such a short answer brings out those frustrations and angry retorts from Greta... exactly what one would expect if they were they in the same situation. I was a bit frustrated myself, so it makes what Greta is feeling easy to connect with. One of my favorite aspects of the book was that feeling of frustration, of only getting little bits and pieces of information. I found myself wanting to throttle the characters at some points. That's what makes the story so engaging, because you can honestly relate to the characters along the way.

While not giving away any spoilers, I will say that Jaromir is a spectacular character. I love his inner struggle that comes out throughout the book, and when the darker side of him is set loose, you realize just why he kept such a tight hold on that darker side of him.

The flow of the story is fast paced, and much of it focuses not only on the 'action' but incorporates the emotions of the characters throughout, which is one of the strongest aspects of the story. The characters aren't just going through the motions, they're feeling their way through them - and they do it in such a way that it's very easy to relate with the characters.

The ending felt a bit abrupt. If this were a standalone novel, I would say that was the story's only drawback. However, in this case, that abrupt ending isn't a closure ending, but open-ended... letting the reader know there's more to come. And this reader is waiting for that next book impatiently, to see what's coming next!

Lu Whitley is an amazing writer and has an amazing feel for telling a ...

What a thriller! You meet Greta, a college girl living with her mom. You may think she’s normal until she comes home to something in her kitchen. It used to be an old acquaintance, used to be. Now it was something else, something that Greta couldn’t explain. Before she can blink her eyes, her mother is dead and she is off with a man she doesn’t know.
Finding out what’s going on turns out to be a challenge. Then Greta learned there was something strange about her too. Her world is turned upside down and Greta finds herself on the move from the Takers, who want her body. She is put to the test and tried to hold her own. Now I’m not giving away to many more details, but you need to read this book. It was a total thrill to read. Keeping me hooked on every page and now eagerly awaiting book 2.
Lu Whitley is an amazing writer and has an amazing feel for telling a good story. I can see her going far with her writing career and I hope to see more amazing reviews on her work soon!

Who ARE these Takers? and why do they do all those nasty things?

I only occasionally read Paranormal and/or Urban Fantasy. I'm more of a Sci-Fi kind of guy, but I kept running across this book and the cover jumped out at me every time. I find the face with the center of a pentagram circling the eye and the blues and purples very appealing. Maybe you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but a nice design like this should get people in the door.

Overall, there were a lot of good points to this story. The characters are likable and have some interesting backgrounds. There are also some well-placed bits of humor. One, when the male lead, Jaromir Ragnarsson tells Greta (the female lead) that his mother called him 'Jami' her response was, "your mom called you yummy?". He corrects her by explaining that Jami is pronounced Yaa-Mee. Cute, and a good way to get the reader to know how the author intended the name to be said, but I often forgot and read Jay-Mee. (Oh well). Jaromir is an eight hundred plus year old who hails somewhere from the Scandanavian area (so, a Viking?) and at one point is listening to ABBA. When Greta asks him about it, he replied that he likes to listen to the songs of his people. I actually LOLed (and I'm a curmudgeonly old guy that doesn't do a lot of LOLing... smiles, or an occasional chuckle maybe).

Jami, it seems, while living his barbaric old life back in the day, was cursed by a Wyrd Woman. (Which sets up a cute line for Greta to say, "did you call me weird?") The curse made him undying (not sure undead is really correct for this guy), but he seems to be a little in denial. Can sprout fangs, check. Drinks blood, check. Has terrible skin reactions to sunshine, check. Doesn't want to admit he's a vampire (wha?). The interesting twist on this curse is the dual personality (Jekyll-Hyde?) thing going on in his head. 'The Beast' part drives him to the base things in life while the Jami part is pretty much a good guy. Not only is he a good guy, he's part of some secret organization called the Fraktioneers who battle with their evil counterparts the Takers. Much of this long standing (centuries old) battle is only hinted at when needed for the current story.

What I didn't like so much: the lustful scenes after Jami spirits Greta away from the Takers and goes on the run. Now, let me say up front, I'm a pragmatist, so to me when someone is attacked by evil monstrous beings, witnesses the death of a family member and is snatched away by some unknown guy and dragged across the country, they're going to have a lot of traumatic thoughts and probably want to escape more than having thoughts about how hot some guy is. I think this is probably just part of the UF/PNR genre that the target readers lap up, but I found silly and out of character.

Another thing that bothered me was what appeared to be inconsistencies with the baddies. Initially, the Takers are easiest to spot from yards away because of their putrid smell. It seems that they also have nasty sun allergies, which leads to a habit of killing humans and draping themselves with their protective skins. OK... gross, but I can see that. Also, in the beginning, Jami talks about how hard the little buggers are to kill, but in later chapters, he mows through them like a hot knife through butter. Or are there some Takers that are wimps? Dunno. The latter Takers don't seem to be as stinky either, so maybe there are levels?

One more thing and this is probably more of a general peeve for the majority of stories that feature immortal (or near-immortal) characters. How come the flashbacks are ALWAYS back to the beginning? The guy's lived over 800 years, think of all the stuff that he's experienced and the changes in the world he witnessed. There was a scene where Jami and his sidekick Stein are flying somewhere in an airplane. (Stein, BTW, is a troll, and a hilarious sidekick). Perfect opportunity for a couple of paragraphs as Jami remembers the FIRST time he flew in an airplane. Perhaps shortly after WWI when one of the crazy gotta-be-the-first-to-get-new-tech Fraktioneers convinces the old Viking to go for a ride in a biplane. Just sayin'.
Overall, the good v. evil and action parts were enjoyable, and I suspect that if one is a true-blue UF/PNR reader you'll love this story.

brilliant story

This story gripped me from the first word and wouldn't let go. A brilliant idea, beautifully brought to life. I loved seeing Alice and Dorothy in the same room as Inspector Lestrage, and though I admit I haven't read all the original books they come from, actually it didn't matter at all. The familiar concepts interweave with the unfamiliar seamlessly, and that gives the book a similar, though far more sinister, feeling of displaced reality to those upon which it draws. A fitting homage, I think, to those well loved classics. The eponymous Red King is fantastically evil (I always love a well written bad guy!), bloodthirsty and genuinely frightening. The descriptions of both him and his experiences in the world he comes from are vivid and absorbing, and I have to admit I secretly hope to see more of him. Threat, violence and cruelty; hope, innocence and bravery, it's all here. A fast-paced, exhilarating chase through Victorian England. Great fun. Give it a try.

Elegant Writing Style, Realistic Setting Due to Research, and Excellent Concept

I would give this review a 4.5 rating for the writing style, although there are parts that I - for ethical reasons - skimmed or skipped. However, the characters were vividly portrayed, and the author has obviously researched nineteenth century London - something that earned my admiration. I've enjoyed Proctor's writing style in the past and was grateful for the opportunity to do it again. I bought the book and don't regret it. The concept behind the story is excellent, and it grabbed my attention immediately. The writing was overall clear and elegant, and the author can pen a good murder. On the constructive side of things, it's my belief that Alice could have been a more active character in determining her fate, although an author can get away with this in the first book of a series. Otherwise, I found it a good read, and will be pleased to purchase more of Proctor's work in the future.

A dark and sinister novel that was a fantastic read!

The Red King was a fully enjoyable read. So much so that I didn't want it to be over when I got to the end. Mr. Proctor describes 19th century London so well that it creates a visually stimulating picture in your mind of what I assume it was actually like in that time period. The story is filled with well-developed characters that you become invested in throughout the novel. It is a dark murderous tale; well thought out and imaginative, an intriguing tale to say the least. The writing is top-notch and expertly flows from chapter one until the end.

Anyone interested in a well-written supernatural thrillers will thoroughly enjoy this book!

Worthless.

Perhaps the most worthless episode yet. Book is written as filler meat just because an episode needs to be pumped out. I've never spoken against the author's deliberate IP steals(Star Wars, Star Trek, Mechwarrior, Battlemech, Dragon Ball), and current media trends as his source of material... but trying to be Star Force and Fifty shades? F*ck that. This book is more about the author's conflicting RL sexuality than science fiction. Garbage.

I agree with the other reviewers. We don't care ...

I agree with the other reviewers. We don't care about arc commandos training. We want more Paul, Jason, Morgan, and the other trailblazers. Battles, Psyonics, tech upgrades, etc. This is pointless filler that no one cares about. It could have been one chapter of starting the arc commandos and what their role in star force was to be.

Thrilling Series!!

The struggle for survival has become a reality for John and his group of friends and family. The hope that, in a few weeks, their lives would return to the civilized world they'd always known has died. Now they just want to find a place where they'll feel safe, where their children can be safe. They think they've found it when they find the stone house in Tennessee, or have they? The Systemic Series is incredible. The author has a true gift for creating characters with real dimensions. The stories are filled with surprises and great survival tip. That's not to say that the leader, John, doesn't make some tremendously stupid moves, but that just makes him real. I'm now up to book #4 and completely hooked. I'll hate when the series is over.

Ongoing Pleasure!

Book 2 doesn't disappoint at all. The continuing journey with this family and friends is written so well. You feel as if you are there! I read book two in one day and I am so happy I have book three, four and five ready to resume their struggles and accomplishments. The description of the castle was so good. I could visualize it! I recommend this series wholeheartedly. Just don't have any plans or a to-do list cause you are not going to want to put the book down.

About the Author

Luke Sloan is a Senior Lecturer in Quantitative Methods and deputy director of the Cardiff Q-Step Centre of Excellence in Quantitative Methods Teaching at the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University. Luke has been teaching quantitative methods all his academic life to a range of audiences including first year undergraduates, masters level students and PhD students. He has also delivered intensive training workshops for academic colleagues and external organisations (such as the International Baccalaureate Organisation).

In 2013 Luke was awarded the Cardiff University Enriching Student Life Award for Most Effective Teacher as a direct results of his innovations in research methods teaching.

Alongside his teaching, Luke applies his quantitative knowledge to tackle the challenges of big data specifically, how social media data can be made useful for social enquiry and investigating how behaviour in the virtual world reflects the real.

Highly recommended

"Lovely" is clearly not the correct attribute for a book on the diagnosis of mental illness. But this book does come in very handy, both for the seasoned clinician who might need quick reminders, and for younger colleagues, as well as the generally interested reader, who wants to get a comprehensive view into the otherwise complex labyrinth of mental diagnoses.
Similarly to the loosening of distinct categories evident in DSM-5, the author goes further in deconstructing the otherwise too firm diagnostic categorizations.
And the Jungian chapter at the end is a bonus!
The book is highly recommended, and, in fact, makes for enjoyable reading.

Fracture of Time

Fracture of Time is a good sci-fi book. It starts out a bit slowly but soon picks up the pace. The battle scenes are excellent. You can almost see the action before your eyes. It would make a great movie with special effects. There are encounters with multiple adversaries, mortal enemies. These all lead up to a surprise ending that I really didn't see coming. Although rather long, it flows along and holds your attention. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone, sci-fi fan or not.

Very well developed characters. Well described surroundings and action scenes. Many unexpected twists and turns. Interesting alien species - very original and well described. Makes you want to keep reading it to find out what happens next. Exceeded my expectations.

This action thriller kept my attention from beginning to end. Great plot and story line. I hope they make a movie of this one.
