Madame Lilly 3: Time of Sanura

Elijah, in hopes of saving Odara from her soulless alter ego, puts her into a deep slumber and shows her what happened, all those years ago, to her Great Grandmother, Sanura, and Grandmother, Sophie. Sanura is a lot like Odara, and after being unceremoniously kicked out of the home she grew up in (working for the Franklins, who got rid of her when Mrs. Franklin grew jealous of the attention her husband was showing Sanura), and ripped from her family, Sanura took a similar path to what Odara is taking now. Sanura's vengeance goes beyond those who hurt her, gaining payback and retribution on those who have hurt others and, along the way, finding out that her heart was not as black as she thought, until one day, she too was pushed too far.

This is the book that I agreed to review, but seeing that it had two books ahead of it, I requested to read those as well. I'm glad I did because I would have missed out on a lot of the story and been confused as to what happened in this one. In the second book, we learn some of the things, through Odara's thoughts, that happened in the first one, but in this one, there is none of that. This book starts where the second book ends.

The cover is what originally drew me to this book. It is definitely one of my favorites so far this year.

I love how the author did this book. In order to show Odara more about her great grandmother, Elijah "transported her back to the time of Sanura, the era of her great-grandmother." Now, this is a little misleading, at least for me, because the way I took that was we were going to do a bit of time traveling, or even some Scrooge stuff where the ghosts are going to see what happened as it happened, standing on the sidelines. Instead, it was more like she had flashbacks of someone's life, watching the scene play in her head like a movie. It still worked and allowed us to learn a lot - and I mean A LOT. We learn about Doctor Smith, a guy who is very similar to Odara's common-law husband, Henry, in that he is not what you originally believe him to be. We learned about Sanura, along with her best friends Ada and Cinese, and Ada's Aunt Mandisa - the person who taught Sanura her voodoo magic. We learn about how Sophie came to be born, Sanura's connection to other families that we heard about in book two, the people that Sanura helped (and how), and what happened that eventually caused the end to Sanura's life and a big change in Sophie.

I think this book was the best of the three, but I liked all three for different reasons. I want to know more about what happens to Odara and where her life goes next, more about Elijah and the connection that they had (which was pointed out, was noticed by the reader, but was never fully explained), and I'm sad that this book ended. BUT... the way it ended leaves it open for the author to continue the series and I really hope that she does so.

Excellent Series

I just can't get enough of this series! From one book to the next, I become more engrossed and blown away by the author's work. She truly knows how to bring the characters alive and blaze the pages. Book 3 of this series is no exception, and Sanura's connection to Odara brings things together in a compelling way. I don't ever want this series to end because it's just that remarkable! There's more to the Madame Lilly storyline than just a horror story. This series involves a woman's struggle to take control of her life. And with that, readers can take an emotional journey of emotional trauma through ML and Sanura's lives. A must read!

I have read three books by this author and I feel that every time she writes she gets better and better. In this story Lilly's great grandmother Sanura is the focal point in this story. We go through this journey of the 1800s and how the lives of women and slaves were. Elijah sends Lilly in the past to see the life of her grandmother Sanura. Sanura and Lilly in my point of view are just alike. Out of the three this one is my favorite. I really did enjoy reading this one a bit more than the others but don't get me wrong, they were all good.

The writing was great. As I said, she gets better with every story. It was a nice quick read and intense at the same time!!!

I..Love..The...Cover! This book cover screams power all over the place. The cover itself alone would have me to pick up the book (Book judging. Don't hold it against me please.)

I can't wait to read more by this author. She is one of those authors that after you have read the previous works, and you find out that there is more coming, you know that they are going to be good.

"Disorder of War"... terrific debut novel... 5 Stars

"Disorder of War: Book I is the first in a medieval fantasy adventure series by author N. J. Shamey with Illustrator C. J. Teague and Editor Kelly Hartigan.

This Kindle e-book was approximately 280 printed pages and sold for $3.99 at time of writing this review.

General Theme (minor spoilers)

Sergeant Dagan Sharaf, a wily combat veteran has reenlisted and has been assigned to head-up a group of raw recruits... his mission is to turn them into a well oiled, fighting unit for the King's war against Arrenon. This first book deals mostly with his exploits and how he and his troops react when they come up against the enemy.

Some thoughts on "Disorder of War"...

1.) well written and edited, with prose that was easy to read and comprehend.

2.a) action... sporadic at first, but then had more and more encounters as Dagan's squad reaches New Bekka.
2.b) the entire story and events had a nice sense of pace and timing.

3.a) character development... a diverse group of individuals make up Company E. Each with their own strengths, weaknesses and personality traits.
3.b) Sergeant Dagan... a man's man and a beacon of hope and strength for his rag-tag company of misfits. His was a personality I liked more and more as the story progressed.

4.) it wasn't until the end segment that magic came into use... I was beginning to think that this may have been misnamed 'fantasy'.

5.) map... a detailed map giving the reader a sense of direction, distance and topography.

Impressions:
I really liked this tale. The main character, Dagan, reminded me a lot of Joe Abercrombie's Logen Ninefingers from "The First Law' trilogy... one of my favorite heroes.
In addition to character development skills, author Shamey has the talent to spin a great tale... keeping it moving and making it believable within the context of the setting.

I look forward to the next installment.

~~Battle for New Bekka in June of 1205 New Katoran Eve (NKE)~~

In the Year 1204 New Katoran Eve (NKE) King Azarah III welcomes a visiting Lord Ambassador Faress who is Arrenese. The Arrenese worship a true god, Vovog. The welcome, however, is not what the Lord had in mind. The story resumes 6 months later in April of 1205 and this is when we meet Dagan Sharaf for the first time. He has fought before but is now rejoining the Legion. It should be mentioned that he is of Svalian heritage while his girlfriend if one of the Followers. If he is able to obtain a promotion and return to his homeland, the hand of Katrina will be his in marriage. Oh, if only battles could be fought and won so easily.

This is an amazing story about the manner in which battles were fought many years ago. One will bear witness to the strategies involved, the lack of food and water and at times be wondering where in the world the officers and supposed leaders went. The fight for New Bekka is described in great detail and one feels as though the battle is being fought around you. In addition to the leadership of Dagan, I thought the addition of several characters added immensely to this story. Edigar proved his value numerous times over as did Bannerman Gill. I also thought the rescue of Neway and Adinew added to the mix in Company E of the 14th Regiment.

One quote that really caught my attention speaks to the horrors of war: 'There was no room in expectations for the horror of bloodshed, for the lingering down that awaits the survivor'. Remember that Dagan was leading raw recruits into their first battle after a short 'boot camp'.

The manner in which the author provides the history previous to the NKE period is most beneficial to the reader. Fills in all of the gaps that one may be wondering about in the time before NKE.

Most interesting story, excellent mix of characters and it will allow the reader to get a true sense of battles fought years ago.

Entertaining start to a military saga

History and fantasy come together in this entertaining start to a military saga plainly set in conflict and war, yet cleverly navigates the trials and tribulations of humanity. In this instance, Shamey’s story is timeless.

The cover instantly draws the reader to the main character, Sergeant Dagan Sharaf as his armor is described in detail. The author’s use of contemporary dialogue and military terminology was distracting at first, until it was clear his Legion was not from ancient Rome. Think present-day mindset with similar limitations of technology, weaponry and transportation used in the ancient world. The accompanying map—though small—does an admirable job helping the reader to follow the action of Dagan’s young band of legionnaires.

Shamey’s use of religious overtones to color the diversity of characters that make up Company E and how Dagan manages to lead his force, made up of essentially green recruits, some old veterans and two servant characters (Neway and Adinew) picked up aboard a transport vessel, contributes to the depth of the story and foreshadows the unknown adversary Company E is only beginning to face as book one comes to a close.

The first book of an epic series, it’s not designed as a stand-alone novel. However, its strength of character design, scope, and believability makes for an attractive story. From a storytelling standpoint, it would have made better sense to place the “lore” summary at the beginning to set up the action in June, 1204 of the NKE (New Katoran Era). It provides clarity and better sets up the action that follows.

Being a fantasy story, [Ambroziak's] introduced other races and worlds.  It's done so effortlessly and flawlessly.  Everything is put into the story line without you having to sit and read a bunch of back story or facts or even a 'new word' dictionary.  The characters pull everything in for you so you just transition right in.  The races are different than any I have seen, but not different enough that I was uncomfortable with them.  Also, the way that she tells the story definitely gives you that glossy, semi-blurry fantasy feel.  It's not a story of what is as we see it, but a story of what may be. If you enjoy elegant, smart writing, vivid fantasy worlds, and everlasting love that stretches beyond the imagination, you should add El and Onine, by K.P. Ambroziak to your TBR list, (or even better, your book shelf or Kindle!) A Well Read Woman

great greenhouses, and luxuriant baths of molten gold

K.P. Ambroziak is unique among authors I'm familiar with. Traditionally even the most obtuse fantastical works will ease a reader into an unfamiliar world, gradually revealing facts as they become necessary - think of Tolkien's hobbits leaving the pastoral Shire or Martin focusing almost exclusively on the Stark family before expanding to the more complicated characters, politically speaking. Ambroziak eschews (or perhaps is incapable) of such worldbuilding. Her worlds seem to pop into existence fully formed, with deep wells of politics, biology, and tradition that the characters are all well aware of, and the reader simply intuits as time goes by (or doesn't.)

It's a dizzying talent, one I'm not sure I would even know how to go about replicating. Perhaps I shouldn't even worry about it, because it's what makes Ambroziak's work so unusual. With EL AND ONINE, she revisits some of the themes touched upon in A PERPETUAL MIMICRY, about spiritual beings taking on flesh and the seemingly casual cruelty that such hybridization breeds.

Rather than the angels of A PERPETUAL MIMICRY, the transcendent creatures of EL AND ONINE are Venusians, often described as beings of fire. (Who else could survive on the surface of Venus, after all?) A civil war amongst the Venusians has led to one of their religious cults taking a sort of a spiritual Stargate to a prehistoric (or perhaps simply ahistoric) Earth. The price of travel to Earth is taking on crude flesh, one that must be constantly fed by the sun, fire, great greenhouses, and luxuriant baths of molten gold. It all seems a terrible burden to the transformed Venusians.

Not to worry, though, because the Venusians have slaves to take out all of their frustrations upon! The Sapients, implied to be a pre-human race of "clay" are cheerfully enslaved by their Venusian masters. Some of the early chapters of EL AND ONINE got me really thinking about slavery. The Sapients hate themselves, despise their own visages, and consider the Venusians to be insanely beautiful - basically for no other reason than that they're constantly told how beautiful their masters are and how hideous they are. The book wasn't especially overtly political, but it definitely got me thinking about some real world parallels - why some people, entire groups of people, even, have to do all manner of nonsense to live up to a standard that was essentially set by slave-owning jerks centuries ago. But I digress without really digressing.

As I said, EL AND ONINE deals with a lot of the same issues as A PERPETUAL MIMICRY. Ambroziak seems drawn to the concerns of non-material beings in a way I haven't really seen addressed since I read Vonnegut in high school. I've kind of rambled on here a bit. This is all very heady stuff. Ambroziak is deeply intellectual in a way I haven't read in a long time either - I gather her stories would all change in light of a vast classical education - but also easily accessible. There aren't fifty cent words thrown in to remind you how smart she is. It's just goat farmers farming goats, and angelic beings trying to explain the ineffable to goat farmers with words goat farmers would use.

I don't really know where I'm going with all this. Perhaps there's just a lot to digest. I recommend you check out EL AND ONINE and all of Ambroziak's work before the secret gets out.

A Wonderful Read.

“El and Onine” is a complex story that does not fit neatly into any box. It is a creation story, an epic saga, a paranormal fiction, a fantasy, and a romance. I took my time putting this review together because I wanted to do justice to the deft way Ambroziak deals with the complexities of a theme which appears in many forms throughout our human history.

Those of us familiar with Ovid’s Metamorphoses will recognize the origins or theme behind the masterful way in which Ambroziak makes this recurring subject in literature new and fresh. As someone not familiar with Ovid’s version I found that my lack did not deter me from enjoying this one.

Even those not accustomed to creation myths will find this book a joy to read. Yet, its complexity will challenge the reader – in a good way. Ambroziak creates characters that reveal themselves slowly and patiently. She does so with such a clever hand that we are drawn to them, wonder about them, want to know them better from the outset, even become impatient to solve the riddle of who they are in their depths. While this is especially true of both El and Onine, our two main characters, even some secondary characters, such as the Venutian goddess, do not appear full-blown, but become known to us bit by bit.

The worlds Ambroziak builds, both on Venus and on Earth, are beautifully and completely wrought. The alien cultures are well developed, including the religious/mythological aspects which drive the theme forward. I marvel at the visual images that invoke both worlds. Ambroziak uses description with just enough detail that we see a full picture, but wastes no extraneous words to get us there.

The story does not follow a chronological line, but moves back and forth in time. This allows the reader to learn why things unfold as they do without giving away too much too early. Some characters are given two names, depending on what part of the story they live in at the moment, or which other characters they interact with. This keeps the reader guessing, at least for a time, as to who is who. We have our suspicions, but no certain confirmations until well into the book. It is a clever device that keeps us on our toes, asking questions, wanting to see how it all ties together.

While I loved all of these aspects, the underlying romance is what drew me in the most. Both El and Onine must suffer greatly before they can fulfil their destinies, El without knowing her role, Onine with full understanding. Yet neither are what they seem, at first, to the reader, or to each other.

This exceptional book will keep readers engaged from page one to its conclusion. I recommend it for enthusiasts of all the genres mentioned.

Complexity, beauty, challenge, and a remarkable wholeness

I’m not sure how to state this both simply and without alienating potential readers, but if you’re not interested in a story that is going to stretch your mind and make you think, research, ponder, compare, and quite possibly struggle with your own beliefs, don’t bother with this one. In fact, don’t bother with anything Ambroziak writes. What you will find with El and Onine, and with her other works as well, is complexity, beauty, challenge, and a remarkable wholeness.

El and Onine is a creation myth, and a love story. It takes inspiration from Ovid’s, Metamorphoses, and if that doesn’t tell you a little something about what you’re walking into, it should. In the same way that Deborah Harkness’s All Souls Trilogy is suffused with depth and detail that only a professor of history could write, so is El and Onine enmeshed in the mythos of western literature that only a professor of comparative literature could weave.
When you begin the story, you begin in the center. Ambroziak doesn’t build worlds as much as she invites you into a world fully built, and has ultimate faith that you, the reader, will discover all you need to know to inhabit this world along with the characters and live out their adventure. I personally, being a fan of creation stories (who doesn’t love a cosmic turtle or a spider woman?) thought I was in a good place to run with the story, and then boom. Suddenly we’re dealing with concepts like divine rape and the -- really truly physical as well as spiritually -- transcendent nature of love and absolute existence.

I scurried back to Ovid. I refreshed myself on the nature of traditional western gods (they were jerks) and the nature of epic poets (they were sneakily political) and the nature of spiritual transcendence (it quite often involves immolation – and that’s just the beginning of the adventure). I reminded myself that although my personal worldview primarily focuses on worldly regeneration and psychological rebirth, there is sometimes more to the story for those who venture further into the realm of the spirit. And truly, Ambroziak does leave that element of the story a beautiful mystery. We’re simply not privy to the whole story, nor are the characters –

“’It is unfolding as it should.’
She had no guarantees. We all walked blindly toward the new world.”

A note as to the characters. I find it fascinating that Ambroziak’s voice often finds its most eloquence with her male characters. You would be wise to pay special attention to Onine, as you read, for while El is the goddess, the creator, the mother of the new race that is to become, it’s Onine who truly gets stuck with the nearly Sisyphean task of making it all happen.

He goes through all the preparatory physical agony, all the politicking, the plotting, he carries the seed, plants it, protects it from all who would betray them, who would tear it out and plant theirs in its place, and he’s the one who, motivated by utter love and devotion, gives his all in nearly anonymous fireworks to ensure the plan works and the old can become transformed into something entirely new. El does more than her fair share of the planning and the suffering, but Onine gets to be aware of it all, he gets to drive, while for quite a while, El gets to snooze in the back seat.
But in the end, they are a team. The two of them, their intent, their action, and their belief are the Omega and the Alpha of this world. Their love transcends the suffering, and their intent works seamlessly hand in hand to create wholly new, unknown, unexplored, untested, brilliantly unique, (a little closer to divine?) life from the ashes of horror and destruction.

And one further note, the goat gets a happy ending. I really cannot ask for anything more.

About the Author
Graham McNeill has written more Horus Heresy novels than any other Black Library author! His canon of work includes Vengeful Spirit and his New York Times bestsellers A Thousand Sons and the novella The Reflection Crack’d, which featured in The Primarchs anthology. Graham’s Ultramarines series, featuring Captain Uriel Ventris, is now six novels long, and has close links to his Iron Warriors stories, the novel Storm of Iron being a perennial favourite with Black Library fans. He has also written a Mars trilogy, featuring the Adeptus Mechanicus. Send in the Ultramarines!

I was, quite frankly, stunned by how good this book is. As far as I know, this is Graham McNeil's first long-form work. Readers of White Dwarf and Inferno! magazines will know him as a writer of Warhammer 40K gaming background and short stories. As Gav Thorpe (13th Legion) has unfortunately proven, game designers and writers of game "fluff" don't always make such a smooth transition "to the big screen" (as it were), but McNeil has arrived with a vengeance. Nightbringer displays the kind of character depth, background density, plot complexity and gift for believable place and character names that we see in the supremely talented Dan Abnett (Ghost Ghosts series and the Eisenhorn Trilogy).
Nightbringer finds us on the troubled planet of Pavonis where an Ultramarines squad and a mysterious Administratum official have been dispatched to find out why the planet's governor has not been meeting the required Imperial tithes. Once there, the Imperial delegation is plunged into a complex web of government corruption, secret alien manipulation and an evil guilder on the verge of awakening an ancient alien entity that nightmares are literally made of.
There is action here galore (for those who feel the need for constant carnage), but there is also fascinating insight into the complexities of Imperial governorship of a distant planet, the shakey collaborations between corrupt humans and alien exploiters, and the fragile nature of Imperial domination of the universe. We also get some welcomed insight into the creepy and perverted world of the Dark Eldar.
Ths novel was obviously timed to be released with the new Nercon miniatures and Codex book from Games Workshop. A bad writing effort might have made one resentful of this obvious "product placement," but McNeil manages to only increase our excitement for what dimensions the revamped Necrons (and future Graham McNeil novels) might add to the already endlessly fascinating 40K universe.

Distinctly Above Its Peers...

From the cover and fluff, you might think this is just a shoot'em up story about the space marines, the 40K Universe's ultimate human warriors. This is deceptive and I am glad that it is! There is a lot more to the book than advertised.
This includes excellent characterization of characters, including humans, aliens, and secondary roles. The plot was also very well drawn out. The horror of the times and various aliens and sociopathic humans is well presented, gruesome but not overdone and ridiculous. If I had to summarize it, the book is a combination of Stephen King horror, gritty sci-fi, and war novel.
It is also faithful to the fluff of the Games Workshop 40K world. If you are a gamer or even just a reader of that imagiverse (which is beginning to rival Tolkein's Middle Earth in breadth and depth...granted, only through the efforts of hundreds of people!), this book fleshes out many plot details and events of 40K.
Basically, the plot revolves primarily around a missing Necron vessel that has been haunting the warp for millions of years. A complicated set of schemes involving the dark eldar, the humans, psycho evil humans, and the faithful Space Marines emerges with various characters trying to stop others from locating the missing ship and the C'Tan god known as the Nightbringer (which is why the title of the book suits it. So it is NOT just a space marine novel, it is really much more.
I would recommend this for anyone who was interested in gritty, action oriented sci-fi with the usual plot twists and teases to keep you excited and reading. You should also be able to tolerate explicit violence, including torture, which crops up occasionally. If you like that style of book, you will love this book. If you want Star Trek style heavily cleansed sci-fi universe heavily guided by modern morality and delicate sensibilities, this probably isn't for you.

An excellent book from any angle

The Warhammer40k universe just got a whole lot more interesting than it already was. From start to finish this was a good book.

Which starts with a promtoed ultramarines captain setn on a simple misson. This mission as it would turn out isn't all that simple. On the planet of Pavonis there is more than meeets the eye. this book has an amazing plot and a nice twist right in the middle, making it a good book to get even if you don't like warhammer 40k universe. But it isn't for people who can't handle reading a book with violence in it.

I recomend this book to anyone 13 or older espeacially if your a warhammer 40k fan like me.

Light hearted, fun read

I had the chance to beta read this story, and I see the improvements Tiffanie incorporated.
This is a light-hearted urban fantasy without the dark and troubling twists often found in such reading. The story shows what daily life could be like with the supernatural with humor, and keeps you wondering what's going to happen next.
I read it with pleasure, and while there weren't any coffee spewing moments, I did snort water a couple of times.
If you like "What If", you'll like this; if you like humor, you'll like this

I found a great author.

This is a short story aimed at the YA Fantasy crowd. Those young at heart will also find this world glimpse to be extreamly entertaining. Full Disclosure time, I was A Beta for this story and it was my introduction to Tiffanie's work. It will not be, repeat not be the last thing of hers I read. Plot and character development are very good. This lady with the proper encouragement( buy her stories) will soon develop into a master slash author to rival Sarah Hoyt, Andre Norton, and Lois Bujold. Enjoy this story!

About the Author

Caroline Graham has worked as a newspaper journalist and magazine writer, and now teaches journalism at Bond University—a small university on Australia’s Gold Coast. Working as a reporter in regional Queensland meant hearing the “yarns” (as the locals say) of drovers and miners, prostitutes and politicians, and she turned to fiction as a way of telling all the stories that stuck with her years later, the ones that were too strange and magical to preserve in newsprint. She has a research master’s degree in creative writing from the University of Wollongong and is currently writing a novel as part of her PhD on the intersections between memory, history, and empathy.

Phenomenal story!!!!

I picked this up because it was on Prime or Kindle Unlimited or something. Anyhow, it was free, so why not? After about half a page, I was hooked. I didn't know whether this short story amout the obscure cousin of a manatee should make me laugh or cry, but I can tell you I read it twice, and will pass it along to my friends. I've never heard of Caroline Graham before, but this bizarre little story has made me a fan, and I will definitely look for more works that she has done. I'd call this a must-read.

About the Author
Jody Lynn Nye lists her main career activity as "spoiling cats." She lives northwest of Chicago with two of the above and her husband, author, packager and game designer Bill Fawcett. Nye was born in Chicago, and except for brief forays to summer camp and college has always lived in the area. She was graduated from Maine Township High School East and Loyola University of Chicago, where she majored in Communications and English, and was an active member of the theater groups, the student radio stations, and the speech team (original comedy and oratorical declamation). She has three younger brothers: a pediatric neurologist, an electronics trouble-shooter, and a CPA. Her mother is a nurse and an artist, and her father owns his own accounting firm.

Before breaking away to write full time, Jody worked at a variety of jobs: file clerk, book-keeper at a small publishing house, freelance journalist and photographer, accounting assistant, and costume maker.

Great capper to the series

It has been fun following the irrepressible Keith Doyle as he has progressed from overeager bumbler to intense protagonist for the elfin community. Each episode engaging and enjoyable. I suspect this may be the last of the series but Jody's fertile imagination just may find a way to bring Keith further adventures. I'll be waiting.

The recipes included with the diet book were good but not great

I started the 10-Day Detox diet about five days ago. The recipes included with the diet book were good but not great. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to stick with the plan because I wasn't loving the food. Lucky for me, 3 days in, Dr. Hyman released this cookbook. I ordered it on Sunday and it came on Tuesday (Thanks to Amazon Prime)! It is FABULOUS! This cookbook has kept me on the diet, without feeling like I am giving up anything. The recipes are amazing. My husband is doing the diet with me, and he keeps asking me, "Is this really allowed on the diet?" because the food is so rich and delicious. I agree with some reviewers, that it does take a moderate amount of time to make the recipes and shop for the ingredients (which are a bit expensive), but it is well worth the time and money because the food is so good. I love to cook and have found the recipes in this book very fun to make, and not too difficult.

Some of the recipes I have tried are: Filet Mignon with Garlic Sauce and Roasted Tomatoes, Southwestern Turkey Chili, Stuffed Compari Tomatoes (ahhhmazing), Vegetable Hash with Fried Eggs, Blueberry Smoothie, and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. As I stated before, the recipes have helped me to stick with the 10 day diet and I have lost 5 pounds in 5 days! I plan to continue with the diet after the 10 days are up, which will be so easy with the recipes provided in this cookbook. THANK YOU, Dr. Mark Hyman!

Delicious Food to Promote Your Health

Dr. Hyman and the amazing team has hit it out of the park once again. This cookbook is fantastic. I have had the distinct pleasure of receiving an early copy of this book and have cooked my way through a large portion of it. There has, literally, not been one disappointing recipe.

As a plant based eater I was thrilled with the Vegetarian and Vegan section of the book and I also modified recipes found in other sections, such as the Broccoli Rabe with Italian Sausage and the Chili-Spiced Turkey Meatloaf with Roasted Carrot Salad.

No modifications were necessary when entertaining or serving the meat lovers in my family. One of these particular meals began with an appetizer of julienned vegetables, Spicy Roasted Pepper and Walnut Dip, and Bell Pepper Mini Quiches followed by Tomato-Basil Soup with Shrimp, Miso Marinated Cod with Fresh Basil and Bok Choy, Spicy Garlic Eggplant and an incredible dessert of Cinnamon and Cayenne Roasted Mixed Nuts with fresh fruit.

In addition to all of the wonderful recipes you will also find tips on healthy living, pointers on the 10 Day Detox Diet and great information on losing weight, living a life free of inflammation, breaking food addictions and boosting your energy.

Never felt better!

I bought the 10-Day Detox book and then ordered this cookbook after we decided to just stay on the diet. I have suffered from joint pain, bloating, swelling and just plain feeling like crap for several years now. I've been through the Western medicine ringer, if you will. Fed up, I started looking into Ayurveda and stumbled upon Dr. Hyman's newsletter and then decided to do the 10-Day Detox Diet. I made everyone in the house follow it since I figured I'm the household cook and it would make my life easier if everyone was on it together. For the first time in 7 years I lost weight (I've done several cleanses and would only lose 3-4 lbs and those pounds that came right back). We have been on the detox diet for nearly 5 weeks now and I've lost 15 lbs and my husband has lost 18 lbs. But the most important thing is that by the 6th day I realized my joint pain was almost entirely gone (I had been living a life of pain 24/7). My "lupus" symptoms all but disappeared making me question the diagnosis altogether. This diet has been a game-changer for me. I suspected I had a gluten sensitivity, but it turned out to be far worse than I thought and my husband has a severe dairy intolerance, both of these were identifiable as a result of the 10-day detox and then reintroducing food items one at a time. When I introduced a small amount of gluten back into my diet I became quite ill and my knees and hands began to hurt almost instantly. This diet is the best medicine I've ever taken and we have decided to make this our new "life diet." I am a total foodie and a very creative cook so I've taken some liberties with the recipes that have taken them to an all new level. I post the meals on our FB page and my friends and family keep asking for the recipes. While it is challenging to maintain the diet, especially as two professional people who have demanding jobs, once you figure out what you can and can't have and learn the new recipes it gets easier. Tip: Make big dinners so you have leftovers for lunch the next day, it will save a ton of time! I highly recommend this diet to anyone, it just makes you feel better overall. If you are struggling with health issues I strongly encourage you to give it a try, it has changed our lives.
