"There is no relief. You have made me hollow."
By L.C.
"There is no relief. You have made me hollow."

I swoon at the prose in this book. The words read like a melody, evoking emotion and weaving the reader into an atmospheric world. I cried, I laughed, and I longed to journey with its characters, which grew to feel like close and beloved friends.

The world building is done effortlessly, neither slowing the pace of the story, nor leaving the reader with too little to grasp the world fully. No, the world is lush and developed, with celtic and arthurian mythology at its foundation. The world's mythology is complex and interesting, the wealth of knowledge of its gods and history dancing from my fingertips like magic. I wanted to go like Rufus into Harmatia's archives to delve deeper into the story's world.

But while the world is magnificent, what makes the book shine are the characters. The characters grow on you and are fully fleshed, three dimensional people. When I got near the end of the book, I wondered, perplexed, at how the relationships between the characters and my own feelings toward them had changed. The characters mature so naturally, gradually and almost imperceptibly, so when you reach the end, it does not simply feel like character development. It feels real, tangible, as if you have lived with the characters and gone through their pains and joys.

And the story is brimming with life, whether it be the eerie and dark Harmatia or the lively and enchanting Sarrin. M.E. Vaughan is a master at creating atmospheres. Her prose truly reads like poetry at times, and her diction paints the world and tone vibrantly.

While I am not typically a fan of flashbacks, she made them heartbreaking and beautiful, revealing both the events which shaped the characters into who they are, while also exploring new stories and characters. They did not cause the story to suffer from a halting pace, leaving the reader wanting to return to the present. Instead, they made the reader invested and curious, adding an invaluable touch of humanism and personal history to the story.

I also adored the original stories she created within the world of Mag Mell. The parallels between them and the story at hand were elegantly done, both foreshadowing and lovely in their themes.

Last, but not least, is the intricately plotted story. M.E. Vaughan's skill at foreshadowing is undeniably adept. Every piece of plot is purposeful, connected and invaluable. It is done in the most delicate manner though, making the story flow naturally and only by the end, allowing the reader to fully grasp the magnitude of certain events and information. The way she interweaves the story, like a chess grandmaster, will leave you gasping for air as you cry at the end. The story is like a living, breathing behemoth, only revealing its true intent once you have journeyed through its bulk.

The ending is both devastating and revelatory. It will leave you sad and shocked, making you more invested in the story and its characters than you ever thought possible. The ending was honestly one of, if not, the best I have ever read.

Pick this book up. You will not regret it.

nothing good lasts for long and no relief stays relieved
By Ashleigh Martin
The Sons of Thestian is the first book in the Hamartia Cycle series written by M.E Vaughan.
The book is about a young prince named Jionathan, who escapes the city in which he lived with his dying father and the tyrannous queen who has taken power as the regent. Behind him is Rufus Merle a Magi who attempts to bring him home. The two characters along with a Sidhe warrior called Fae travel perilous woods encountering some rather fearsome foes.
I found the book an irresistible read the plot was fascinating. Vaughan provides a very visceral experience for the reader. Vaughan seems to toy with her reader, nothing good lasts for long and no relief stays relieved. Parts of the story make you laugh some make you cry and others make you scream at it as if you were telling the author oh your evil well that’s the polite version. The story kept you turning the pages thinking it cannot get any worse and low and behold it can. The story incorporates ideas and themes from Irish folklore and Arthurian legend of which I found fascinating. Vaughan creates characters with mystery and depth that makes the reader question every decision an action they make and why they think and behave the way they do. Vaughan also within her story creates her own religion with a series of god and goddesses with their own dominion of which this also captured my interest.
Now every decent book review should have dislikes but suffice to say there was nothing dislikeable about The Sons of Thestian it is truly a captivating read.

Amazing characters, beautifully written story
By Danielle Doolin
This book is honestly the best that I've read in a while. I hit a reading slump that's been hard to shake and I was a little hesitant in starting because I'm not usually super big on fantasy, but a close friend recommended it to me so I had to try it. I'm so glad I did. So, so glad.

You get to know the characters and get attached and while you get comfortable in the story, it's never really predictable. The story is very inclusive and its characters are diverse, and none of it feels forced which I absolutely adore. It's such an amazing read, I'm so glad I picked it up.
