Omg, zombies, degenerates, Cullen & Phoenix!!! Enough said!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I had some questions from the first book Into The Darkness & luckily they were addressed in this book. Like I had mentioned in book one I had some parts that weren't believable to me concerning Ike & how he handled the outbreak & getting to his family. That was addressed here during Ike's POV this helped me to see into the mindset of this character that I had such high expectations of. Thank you for that Kira, I really appreciate how things were addressed & settled. As we follow these characters through their determination to survive from the zombies, degenerates & the breakdown of the American society we get more information on their pasts. I know I kind of questioned how Phoenix was so badass off the bat in Into The Darkness & why there wasn't a meltdown. Slowly learning about the characters past it all started to make sense to me. Seeing her being badass in Emerging From Darkness but also seeing her have an emotional breakdown & struggle through some heavy emotions solidified her growth to me. This book was emotional almost immediately off the bat with it picking up right where the first book left off with Ike, Cullen, & Forest being held hostage & about to be executed by the Degenerates. We loose Forester to the Degenerates & when we do here is where we see Ike & Cullen's badass military skills come into play. So as I'm crying over the loss of Forester, I was cheering on Ike & Cullen. Kira really pulled out a lot of emotion in this book, there was some serious loss, some strides in finding a cure. & of course tons of action. Some of the Degenerates finally get what's coming to them but just when we think that there may be a happily ever after. We are thrown for a loop & left with a cliffy!!! One doozy of a cliffy! So this one is a so,I'd 4 stars for me & I can NOT wait to read the next book & find out what the heck happened that led to the cliffhanger.

Not your momma's zombies

We met Phoenix, Cullen, and Ike in Into the Darkness. There’s a virus that is turning everyone into a zombie and the prisons have been let loose and that group calls themselves Degenerates. This doesn’t make for a very friendly world. Add in the fact that Phoenix seems to have something everyone wants, and you’re in for a world of deceit and treachery. The only people she has to rely on are Cullen, Ike, and Rian.

I still really like all these characters and am afraid of what’s happening next. I will say that there were a few surprises that I didn’t expect, but no tears. YAY go me! This isn’t the end of the series. It ends on a cliffhanger. And I’m not sure when the next book in the series will come out. So if that’s a deal breaker for you, then you heard it here. I wish I could say something because as I think of what to say, it’s going to be a spoiler of some sort. I will say that I found the writing more tight in this second book than in the first. I also enjoyed it more. I think it’s the investment of the characters.

Ms. Adams writes a very interesting story about the zombie apocalypse. It’s been done, yet not. I also like her characters. They are all tough but not impervious and are vulnerable. I mentioned before that I’d avoided reading her stories because I’ve been told that they’ll turn a person into a blubbering mass of jello, and I don’t like blubbering or jello. But so far this series, I’ve been fairly safe. I’m glad that I risked the chance. So would I recommend this book? I would. If you’re not one for cliffhangers, then I think you should wait until the series is complete. If not, go out and get Into the Darkness first, then this one.

I was given this book in exchange of an honest opinion. Emerging from Darkness is the very definition of "What else could go wrong" and it shouldn't be Emerging more like Submerging to the Darkness. Now don't let this stop you from reading, because what someone doesn't like others might enjoy.

The Best Yet!

I read the first two books in this series and enjoyed them a great deal. They are full of fast paced action, terrifying suspense and very human characters caught up in a world gone mad, fighting to survive against incredible odds. The third book in the series fulfills the promise of a new and talented writer, giving me everything I liked in the first two with the addition of subplots, mini-mysteries and a truly evil new arch villain. I couldn't put it down and I am looking forward to much more from him.

Action Packed Adventure Series

As much action as ever. This being the third in the series, I was afraid in might wind down sooner. It keep me reading till the end. Mr. Thomas makes you feel like the demented are after you. Well written and most exciting series I have read in a while. Start at the beginning with book one you'll be glad you did.

They just keep getting better. The third book was filled with wonderfully varied characters and gripping situations. This one had the blazing fast pace that I love about the series plus more tense subplots than the other two in the series. I hope to read more.

Love this series

I became invested in Dorian and his journey in the first book in this series, "The Immortal Coil". Someone who possesses some pretty amazing powers, yet still needs to learn to harness them, Dorian is a hard guy not to love and the secondary characters in these stories are pretty amazing as well. In "Shadows of Humanity", two years have passed and Dorian has returned to New York from Japan only to be met with news of the ultimate impending doom. The dark paranormal elements in this particular book are what is making this story so intriguing and chillingly powerful. A really great urban fantasy read.

Every bit as good as the last one

After tearing through the previous book, The Immortal Coil, I bought this one /immediately/ upon finishing it.
In my opinion? Every bit as good as the last one, and my god the mindscapes J Armand brings to life are spectacular!!
I really enjoyed the budding romance that began between Dorian and a certain someone, and I can't wait to see where it ultimately leads!
I'm still not good at reviewing without fear of giving too much away, so all I can say is, get this book after finishing the first one as soon as possible!

Kerry Hotaling has been a member of the Friends of Gettysburg since 2001. He has built historic fences on the battlefield during the annual volunteer workday since 2007. He has also lit candles on the graves during illumination night in November. He is also the author of What they Endured What they Wrought, a history of what some of the regiments experienced in the Battle of Gettysburg.

These are the kinds of books that will save history for young people.

I'm not a "History Buff" but I enjoy reading about it and this book did not disappoint at all. History is best learned when we understand the details of what happened and why. This work describes the men involved in the heart of the conflict, their interactions with each other, and the folding out of the war seen through their eyes.

I love when I get a character list at the beginning of a book, so I can reference who is who back and forth and keep everything straight. Thank you for this!

What makes this book so interesting is all of these Generals and their individual personalities. You like some, and dislike others. You see friendships and foes. You see political pandering, as well as genuine military skill. You see some loose their cool with hotheadedness while others go out of their way to sacrifice self for the good of the Country / Army. Big Ego's clashing with military rules. All the makings of an interesting drama.

You find yourself pulling for these men, despite knowing we win in the end anyhow. I love how Kerry Hotaling has brought this story to life and made this piece of history interesting and engaging. You can feel the heart that went into telling their stories and connecting them all together. These are the kinds of books that will save history for young people.

The afterward with the recap of the characters was quite interesting and a nice touch. I also like how the book didn't end on a warm fuzzy feeling. The country was broken, and in need of great repair. Gettysburg was won, but it would be some time before healing was evident and ending the book the way it did leaves room for the feelings that were evident at the time. Hopeful, but not over or healed.

Yes there are some typo's but another printing will fix it. Don't let it bug you.

The Battle of Gettysburg as told by a fly in the battle field

This review might contain a spoiler alert for anyone who has not studied United States History. Let’s get that part over with immediately: The Union won the Battle of Gettysburg and ultimately the Civil War. Now that the spoiler is out of the way, let’s address the historical fiction piece written by Hotaling. This story was amazingly written. The details of the battle were impressive; and it is clear to this reader that Hotaling did his research. The dialogue might be a little bit of a stretch in some places, i.e. when the generals are calling each other sons-of-bitches. But other than some language that might be a little more than a dramatic embellishment, I felt as though I was in the battle of Gettysburg.
Hotaling describes the scenes in vivid detail. I felt as though I wasn’t sure that Lee would come over to fight this infamous battle, even though I know from studying history that this battle was a positive turning point for the Union army. This work of fiction might be that, but it makes learning about the Civil War battles more interesting. Perhaps Hotaling will grace us with more works so that all the battles of the Civil War might be as educational as they are entertaining.
However, a word for those who are not war enthusiasts, much like I am not, this book does contain some terminology which might be confusing. Although I read the introduction which provided details about the major players in the Battle of Gettysburg, I was, and still am, confused about the constitution of the Union Army. I am not familiar with a corps, or a brigade, or what the differences are between all the divisions of the army are. I think this puts some of the readers at a disadvantage. While I am sure that Hotaling and many of the readers of this work are Civil War enthusiasts, for those of us who are not, we are at a major disadvantage. I was sharing The Yankees with a friend of mine who is married to an army veteran, and according to her, if she wasn’t married to an army man, she would be confused by the breakdown as well. I think it would have been helpful to a novice reader of war stories such as myself to have a little glossary or explanation prior to delving in to this otherwise amazing story.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who might be looking to learn more about the Gettysburg Battle but isn’t inclined to read a history book. The facts might not be 100% accurate, after all this is a piece of historical fiction, but the basis of the story has merit and foundation. It provides people who want to learn more with a starting point. It even makes the generals more approachable, from a human standpoint. Unfortunately, it doesn’t paint Lincoln and others in Washington in a positive light, but, the battle was not about them, after all.

Vivid portrayal of the Gettysburg Campaign

Kerry Hotaling does a great job in putting us right in the midst of battle with these Union generals, and the tough decisions they faced during their strategy sessions. I agree with other reviewers in that it is quite detailed, but if you are a history buff, then you will appreciate the detail and background that is provided. It certainly was interesting to learn about the various generals, and the different perspective and personality each one of them had. He really brings the characters to life, and has you feeling as if you are right there with them. It is obvious to me the author is a fantastic storyteller, and I do look forward to reading his next book (about the battle of Iwo Jima). I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Can't Stop Loving this Series

I have to give credit to Mr. Collings. He has managed to hook me completely with this series. And yes, I am going to ultimately end up paying the full price of a hardcover book to get to the end of this series. Don't care - it's worth it. It is just a wonderfully fun, funny and inventive zombie/alien series. I actually enjoyed this installment more than some of the previous ones, despite the longer wait for its release. And it was a longer wait. I had to actually go back and reread installment 5 because I forgot some what occurred.

I felt I actually did get some answers in this installment - and some unexpected and nice twists as well. Looking forward to the next installment.

Excellent Fast Paced Zombie-Munching Fun

Michaelbrent Collings did it again!

He created a fast-paced ride through an even faster collapsing world and left me dangling wanting more.

I did feel the story was a bit TOO fast and far too short. There were some things that I think could have slowed down and been developed more, rather than to put out a book to feed the fans who have been waiting. Some things were expected, but there were some twists there that had me hanging on to every word.

Will I buy #7? Yes indeed. Michaelbrent Collings is one of my favorite authors and honestly? Your fans can wait an extra month or two or three to really put some "meat" in the story!

awesome I can't get enough of MBC.

Fast paced. Not predictable. Omg I could not put it down. When does the next book in this series come out? Not your normal zombies here. More like zombies on steroids. The only thing I didn't like was it wasn't long enough. I gave it a five because all I could think about was when was the next time I would have time to finish the book. I made time. Highly recommend for horror, zombie, action lovers.

I have read the 3 books in this series and can't wait till the next book comes out. The fight with the intelligent aliens who are predators and who conquer and make the losers serve them to include them as a food source is graphic and while it is more about how to defeat these predators, it shows man to be a predator to be dealt with. It is cunning and guts to go into a fight with these aliens and take down their rule of only those that conquer can roam the galaxy. Captain Jack and his band of fighters take it to the aliens on their turf and prove the adage take no prisoners and show no mercy. He knows who to trust and does ally with a group of predators who recognize there is a new top dog in the fight. Jack lets everyone know who is at the top of the food chain. Humans!

An interesting and enjoyable series

In this book, the crew not just battle more aliens, a couple of which, they haven't seen before, but Jack also negotiates with new alien forms who are in danger of, or who already have become dominated by predator aliens.

The mix of cultures is challenging to the Earth fleet, as they struggle on with their campaign. There are a few civil war situations for the crew to sort out as well. Picking the wrong side could be disastrous. If they get it wrong, they could adversely affect the new planet's future.

About the Author

V. R. R. Richards began as a physicist designing ballistic rockets before working on advanced computer systems in California's Silicon Valley. Later, a research program in neuropsychology led to a doctorate in human behavior, brain function, and consciousness.

After moving to northern California as a consultant, Richards focused on a lifelong ambition: developing quasi-historical science fiction stories. This tale about the ancient alien god, Enki: Lord of Earth, earned a place as finalist in the Pulsar Sci-Fi Contest and as semi-finalist in the ASA international competition for screenplays.

Richards now lives near the redwoods, with beloved spouse and Siamese cat.

Exciting read!

ENKI: Lord of Earth is an entertaining Sci-fi adventure. The author creates an incredible and detailed world to escape into, with an imaginative and action-packed story. The character Eä is in search of gold to save his planet from destruction. He finds it on another planet but it will require mining to extract it, and with genetic manipulation and breeding on this planet from bipedal apes, he creates a species capable of this task. He is initially driven by saving his planet, and yet, as the story unfolds, this main character evolves. This new species is more to him than laborers, for a means to an ends, instead, they become like his children and as any good father, he becomes protective. He struggles with Morgoth that believes they are freaks with no destiny. Eä believes they have a destiny even greater than his people, and embedded divinity in their code. Morgoth believes that love is weakness and power belongs to those who take it. Eä in contrast says, "Strength isn't measured by brutality. Or war. It comes from cooperation, from compassion." Good vs. Evil. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys an exciting read – 5 Stars!

Gripping

The writing of V. R. R. Richards has the power to take you to a whole other world. I found the story to be captivating right from the start--the plot is very original, and I loved the unique and three-dimensional cast of characters. I loved the sci-fi aspect of this book as well... and that's coming from someone who doesn't typically enjoy books in this genre! I think the reading experience, for me, for Enki: Lord of Earth compared to other books in this genre is that Richards does not alienate his readers simply because the events and technology inside the book is unlikely to happen in our own world. I found this to be a gripping read, and I will gladly read something else by V. R. R. Richards again in the future if another book comes out!

Good start to a new series.

Tattered loyalties is a good start. Gideon and Brie start it off. Do to circumstances that come about, They have to mate. Gideon is the alpha and Brie is the submissive. Gideon underestimates her strength to defend herself. She proves she can be as strong as the next wolf. A crazed relative comes out of hiding to stir things up. Then the story ends. I was disappointed that at page 250 on my kindle it ended with a what the hell. I know it will carry onto the next book and so on. But there could have been 24 more pages of story rather then intros to other books. There where some errors in words but nothing that takes away from the story. I enjoyed it and recommend it. It is a good beginning to the new series and I will continue to read the other books to come. Because I want to see what's going to happen next. It's a new beginning.

I really do not like alpha men who are ass@$$__#( at heart and never seen to change, yet the female loves them anyway. It is a recurring character trait amongst the males. Not reading anymore.

I loved the The Redwood Pack but after reading this I'm torn, because I like both Series. Ms. Ryan has me definitely hungry for Book Two.
Brie Jamenson knew since she was a child who her mate was. But she kept it to herself, first off she was to young now and he wasn't from her Pack. If that wasn't bad enough there is no way The Fates got it right they had to of made a mistake, she was a submissive and he was an Alpha.
Gideon Brentwood was Alpha of the Talon Pack for thirty years now, ever since he killed the old Alpha who was out of his mind and evil, the man who should have protected him but didn't, his father. The Packs were coming into change lots of change, but are they ready? I was gifted this ARC for an honest and truthful review.

Entertaing, interesting and important

Cranky Ladies of History is an anthology conceived and developed by Tehani Wessley of Fablecroft Publishing and author, Tansy Rayner Roberts. Crowdfunded through Pozible during Womens History Month in 2014, the concept attracted many supporters eager to be a part of project.

Twenty two authors have contributed to Cranky Ladies of History, including award winner's Thoraiya Dyer, Juliet Marillier, Jane Yolen and Garth Nix.

Each short story in Cranky Ladies of History features a real female historical figure. I'm not familiar enough with history to separate fact from fiction in these pieces but these strong, often fierce women are those who challenged society's rules and ideas about how women should behave, though not always in heroic or noble ways. While Garth Nix honours Lady Godiva in 'The Company of Women', 'Look How Cold My Hands Are' by Deborah Biancotti features Countess Bathory, an insane serial killer.

The women featured include an Ancient Egyptian ruler ('Neter Nefer' by Amanda Pillar), a Chinese Empress ('Charmed Life' by Joyce Chng), a British women's rights campaigner ("Mary, Mary" by Kirstyn McDermott) and an Australia doctor ('Due Care And Attention' by Sylvia Kelso. Some of the protagonists represent well known figures such as Queen Elizabeth 1 ('Glorious' by Faith Mudge) while others feature woman whose lives have all but been forgotten, such as the Icelandic Viking warrior, Hallgerðr Höskuldsdóttir ('For So Great A Misdeed' by Lisa L. Hannett)

An entertaining and interesting anthology, Cranky Ladies of History is an important collection of fiction that gives voice to an extraordinary selection of women from a broad range of backgrounds, era's and cultures. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Cranky Ladies are awesome

This is another book that I've given my mum recently. She started reading it and rather smugly emailed to say that now she doesn't feel so bad about being one sometimes. She says:

I particularly loved "A Song for Sacagawea" because it is the story of all those unsung women who were forced to help conquerors take their lands. They were looked on as trade goods, but much of the exploration/exploitation wouldn't have occurred without them. There is a similar story of a woman who translated for the conquistadors in Central America [she means Malinche]. Much as I admire those women, their treatment really p....d me off, of course. Don't quote me on that, though.
(Oops. Heh.) Anyway, I am so totally excited that this book exists. I supported it in its Pozible funding, I did a little bit of supporting in terms of writing a blog post (I had big intentions to do a few but whoosh there went the month), and generally YAY stories about real historical ladies! !! So I finally got around to actually reading it. Firstly let me say I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE WITH THE ORDER OF THE STORIES, TEHANI AND TANSY. Ahem. The first few stories were the sorts of things I expected. Mary I as a child, Lady Godiva, Mary Wollstonecraft... and then Bathory Erzsebet. Who is someone I had never come across and who was very, very not nice. Very not nice. Like, Deborah Biancotti you had already scarred me with your Ishtar and now my brain is even WORSE. Because this story does not redeem Erszebet. It shows that women are quite capable of being cold and cruel and nasty. And, at a chronological and geographical distance, this is almost something to be pleased about... since after all, we are just human. Hmm. Getting to Erszebet has meant skipping over Mary (a story showing how difficult her childhood must have been, thanks Liz Barr), and Godiva (thank you, Garth Nix, for making her more than just That Nude Lady) and Wollstonecraft (Kirstyn McDermott, I have always loved her at a remove - that is, knowing only basics of her life, I knew she was wonderful. This fictional take helps just a bit more). Leaving Europe, Foz Meadows goes to the Asian steppes with "Bright Moon" and a fierce tale of battle and kinship obligation; Joyce Chng to China and silkworms and captivity. Nice Shawl teases with "A Beautiful Stream" by talking about events and people from the 20th century I felt I ought to know and drove me to google find out if I was right (yes); Amanda Pillar pleased me immensely by being all provocative about Hatshepsut, one of my favourite historical women ever. Sylvia Kelso stunned me by talking about two women from Australia's history that I had no knowledge of (a doctor? lesbians?? in the early 20th century?!) and Stephanie Lai puts flesh on the bones of Ching Shih, the female Chinese pirate I've only encountered in passing. I would like to thank Barbara Robson profusely for writing Theodora so magnificently and by incorporating Procopius, to show just how such historical sources can be used. Lisa L Hannett continues (what I think of as) her Viking trend, while Havva Murat takes on Albania's medieval past and the trials of being born female when your father wants a son. I don't mean this as a negative, but I am so not surprised that Dirk Flinthart wrote of Granuaile, the Irish pirate. I was surprised where he took her; pleasantly so, of course. LM Myles brought in one of my other very favourite and bestest, Eleanor of Aquitaine, this time as an old, old woman - still cranky and sprightly and everything that was great about her. I didn't love Kaaron Warren's "Another Week in the Future," but I have no knowledge of Catherine Helen Spence so I had no prior experience to hang the story on. Laura Lam brought in a female pirate I'd never even heard of, the French Jeanne de Clisson, while Sandra McDonald writes a complicated narrative of Cora Crane: there are unreliable narrators and then there are unreliable timelines and sources and they get fascinating. Thoraiya Dyer introduces someone else I've never heard of, by way of 19th century Madagascar and a royal family negotiating the introduction/imposition of European ideas. Juliet Marillier brings a compassionate, loving and beloved Hildegard of Bingen, while Faith Mudge caps the whole anthology with Elizabeth I. Look, it's just great. A wonderful range of stories, of women, of styles, of close-to-history and far (but still with that element of Truthiness). I think we need a follow-up volume. I'd like to order Jeanne d'Arc, Julia Gillard, the Empress Matilda, Pocahontas, Eleanor Roosevelt, Malinche, and the Trung sisters. Kthxbai. You can find Cranky Ladies over here.

All in all, this anthology is *glorious*!

I love living in the future! To have the privilege of participating in the funding of a book to really get behind books I want to see in print, to demonstrate with my frugal spending what I really want to read. I am proudly one of those who backed the Pozible campaign that was responsible for funding this book. What an extraordinary time in publishing, to be a reader and hooked into communities and networks! I funded at the level where I received a gorgeous hardcover book, and I have to compliment Kathleen Jennings on her gorgeous cover and internal illustrations. From first glance at the cover you can see what this book is about, what kind of stories about ladies it tells, and it whets your appetite marvellously.

Historical fiction is one of those things I dabble in, historical non-fiction I just haven’t done remotely enough reading of. But there was no way I could resist an anthology like this that highlights the interesting lives of historical women, imagining how they lived, what they thought and looking at the impact they made – not always for the greater good. And that too is a strength of this anthology, it features all kinds of cranky ladies, from those who seek to improve the moral good, to those who are remembered with horror and fear, daring women, wronged women, women I’ve heard of and those who are brand new to me. This book is both a pleasure to read, and gives you some small insight into the historical significance of several women, mostly those who are forgotten by modern history. It’s not that the book is educational exactly, but it does make you want to learn more, to study these women and their lives.

Stories that particularly resonated with me, and it was hard to pick just a few I promise:

Bright Moon by Foz Meadows:

A woman who is determined not to submit to any man unless he can best her in wrestling, and because she is so fierce and talented, she wins thousands of horses from them as they fail to beat her. I love Khutulun’s fierce spirit and that she is herself and doesn’t have to hide from her father, that he supports her even if he is surprised by her declarations and strength of character. It’s these two things, her strength and his love that really resonated for me in this story.

Due Care and Attention by Sylvia Kelso:

I love the writing tone of this story, it plays in my mind almost as though I’m watching an episode of period drama like ‘Call the Midwife’ or ‘Downton Abbey’ or similar. I love Lilian’s dedication to medicine and care, and reading about the early use of cars in Brisbane was really interesting – particularly including the Royal Automobile Club. I loved in particular her discovery about the water treatment for burns. The whole story was just gorgeous, I’d read a whole novel about Lilian, absolutely.

Hallowed Ground by Juliet Marillier:

What a gorgeous story of piety, commitment and activism. Sister Hildegard has such quiet strength and Marillier’s writing truly brings her to life. I love the quiet opposition, the use of letters and negotiation with logic that Sister Hildegard uses. I love that although she has visions that the story isn’t really centred around them but about her own perseverance in developing her virtues. Trying to better oneself, trying to better the world around you. Such a beautiful story.

The Dragon, The Terror, The Sea by Stephanie Lai:

The storytelling voice in this story is unique, it’s different and I found that unlike most of the other stories which I read in a single sitting, this one I savoured over several sittings because each word and sentence seemed to be so layered. I loved the character of the Dragon, that she was so ruthless and yet operated within her own rules. I love that she had family, children and that this clearly didn’t stop her being both terrifying and powerful. This was one of the stand out stories in the anthology for me.

The Company of Women by Garth Nix:

Another favourite from the anthology, Nix’s story captivated me. I love the mythology behind this story and that Lady Godiva was a saviour in partnership with the bees. I loved the way the story was centred around women’s business in tending the bees, that became the saving of everyone else. This was a perfect short story for me – completely self contained, gave me every satisfaction and left me content.

Charmed Life by Joyce Ching

Queerness and silk discovery, choosing love over a certain kind of elevation into prosperity/wealth/power. This story was sweetness, it was delightful, and I loved that Leizu got to be with her lady love and that nothing tragic happened. Maybe it was different in history, but I’m in love with this story where the story ends on such a perfect note.

The Pasha, The Girl And The Dagger by Havva Murat

Strength and determination, proving one self to be just as good as the men who never had to question why they didn’t get to be the best and brightest. Earning the approval of one’s father. Trying to hold out against invasion, this story has everything – as I read the words, it seemed like an action movie was playing in my head! Nora reminds me of every young heroine I’ve read and loved, through this story and seeing her grow into a powerful young woman who seeks to prove herself and be recognised for her strength is so satisfying. I love that she’s hungry for battle, a little bloodthirsty and is full of valour and courage.

Mary, Mary by Kirsten McDermott

The way this story begins with death, with familiarity and the Grey Lady is so intriguing! I’m not very familiar with the story of both of the Marys, both Shelley and Wollstonecraft but I loved reading about them both through Wollstonecraft’s eyes. I’ve always enjoyed stories that explore companionship of a supernatural kind that is not really of the ‘real’ world, the Grey Lady is a mysterious but compelling such companion and I loved the unfolding of her relationship with Mary. So much to love about this story!

Look How Cold My Hands Are by Deborah Biancotti

I’m not a horror reader, it’s fair to say that I go out of my way to avoid it. So I can’t say that I liked or loved this story, but it did resonate with me strongly. And I think it was so important to include this story in amongst the others in the book, stories of cranky ladies where their motives aren’t pure, they aren’t good people, because these women too are part of history, have been forgotten and their impacts largely unwritten and untold. A story of Countess Bathory, one of the most notorious serial killers in history, and especially as a female serial killer is a good example of this. Other than the fact that she murdered countless other women, what do we know of her life, her reasons, what really happened? Not much. Needless to say this story left me chilled and I needed a unicorn chaser (or three) after it.

All in all, this anthology is *glorious*!
