Shadows 2: The Half Life, by Graham Brown, Spencer Andrews

For two thousand years The Fallen have walked the earth. Called vampires by some, nosferatu by others and demons by the Church, they exist as mortal enemies of human kind, living in the shadows, feeding off human blood and hiding from the Holy Order of the Righteous Fire: hunters commissioned by the Vatican to rid the Earth of their hateful scourge.
Most of the Fallen live a dark, barren life, preying on the weak for they’re only pleasure: a brief high brought on by drinking blood, where emotions and human desire can be felt.
Christian Hannover is one of them, but for seventeen hundred years he’s resisted the call of the blood and sought to find some hope in the barren darkness, some purpose to explain the curse. With the help of some unlikely allies he’s seen the prophecy of the Midnight Sun begin to unfold, he’s discovered the true source of the curse that affects him and he now seeks to put an end to it by destroying Drake, the king of the undead, the dark Adam who cursed them all.
Having wounded Drake in the bayous of Louisiana, Christian want’s nothing more than to find his old master and finish him, lifting the curse once and for all. But strange visons suggest he’s on the wrong path and the sudden arrival of FBI agent Kate Pfeiffer puts him in a difficult position.
To save Kate’s life, Christian infected her with the venom of his kind. Her wounds healed and she became otherwise immortal, but she’s now caught in the Half-Life: the agonizing transformation that accompanies the fall, as human warmth, emotion, and conscience are stripped away.
Knowing she’ll likely die or destroy herself before the change is complete, Christian takes her with him. If he can find and destroy Drake, Kate will be healed like all the others.
But Drake has not been idle. Not only is he recovering from his wounds, he’s now on the trail of a weapon called the Dark Star, a weapon so powerful that no man, angel or vampire can stand before it. As old as recorded history, and hidden for thousands of years, in Drake’s hand the Dark Star would become a weapon of subjugation with the power to destroy not only Christian and the Righteous Fire but the Angel of Redemption itself.

With the FBI and Righteous Fire hot on their trail, and Drake lurking in shadows up ahead, Christian and Kate race to find the Dark-Star. Danger stalks them on all sides, but the secrets buried in their hearts may prove to be the most deadly weapons of all.

Great book. Outstanding in every way. Only the best authors can dish out extraordinary and thoroughly-plotted story. A page tur
By Amelia G.
There's so much tension during the chase that I have to put down the book for a breather.

Shadows Part 2, The Half-Life is as exciting, intriguing and suspenseful as its predecessor, Shadows of the Midnight Sun.

Two plots:

Kate's transformation with Christian at his side in her time of vulnerability; and

And the battle between Good and Evil continues......

Two sides, good or evil, four groups fighting for supremacy and power.
On one side, Christian Hanover with the Staff of Constantinople against Drake with Jacob's Stone, another side is Leroy doing the best he can to reform the undead, Henrich against Drake and Christian, as well as on the other side Akash.

Book 2 ends, am like a dangling participle, I need book 3. Graham, hurry up.

Savage vampire fun!
By Steve Manke
Part two of series was everything that I hoped. It picks up where the first book left off and runs wild with mystery and suspense. Christian goes through the ringer in his search for Drake, and the climactic showdown is brutal and awesome. I can't wait to see how things are wrapped up in book #3.

This book was a lot of fun to read and is not just for the pre-teen audience. Great for baby boomers that want to relive the early sixties and the humorous relationships between 6th graders during the days of "Camelot". Looking forward to Volume 2!

A groundbreaking new book from the bestselling author of Shop Class as Soulcraft

In his bestselling book Shop Class as Soulcraft, Matthew B. Crawford explored the ethical and practical importance of manual competence, as expressed through mastery of our physical environment. In his brilliant follow-up, The World Beyond Your Head, Crawford investigates the challenge of mastering one's own mind.
We often complain about our fractured mental lives and feel beset by outside forces that destroy our focus and disrupt our peace of mind. Any defense against this, Crawford argues, requires that we reckon with the way attention sculpts the self.
Crawford investigates the intense focus of ice hockey players and short-order chefs, the quasi-autistic behavior of gambling addicts, the familiar hassles of daily life, and the deep, slow craft of building pipe organs. He shows that our current crisis of attention is only superficially the result of digital technology, and becomes more comprehensible when understood as the coming to fruition of certain assumptions at the root of Western culture that are profoundly at odds with human nature.
The World Beyond Your Head makes sense of an astonishing array of common experience, from the frustrations of airport security to the rise of the hipster. With implications for the way we raise our children, the design of public spaces, and democracy itself, this is a book of urgent relevance to contemporary life.

Pity the Poor Gym Attendant Who Suffers the Scorn of M.C., or, Do Gyms Play Emo Music Because of Kant?
By not me
"The World Beyond Your Head" is prodigiously erudite but overloaded with underbaked ideas. It aims to bring phenomenology into conversation with ethics and cultural criticism, and reaches the conclusion that mastery of a skilled craft or practice -- i.e., an activity which forces the craftsman to grapple with objective reality -- may be modern man's best hope for achieving genuine individuality in a world where business interests work overtime to seize control of our attention (before seizing control of our money). That's a powerful idea, and was more or less the thesis of the author's previous book, "Shop Class as Soulcraft." But whereas that book was fleshed out with (often hilarious) vignettes drawn from the motorcycle world and the author's own life, "The World Beyond Your Head" feels very serious. It throws together Big Ideas from philosophy, cognitive science, and social theory, mixes in acerbic cultural commentary, and tops it all off with a profile of a small Virginia firm that makes church organs. The author is clearly a smart dude, and many parts of his book are slap-on-the-forehead brilliant, but the overall argument feels convoluted and underdeveloped, as if the book were a work in progress instead of a finished product. I enjoyed "The World Beyond Your Head" very much, but I wish the author had gotten more help from genuine individuals skilled in the craft of book-editing.

Not Talk Show Self-Help
By William B. Harrison
in The World Beyond Your Head, Matthew B. Crawford examines the American culture of disembodied work and disembodied electronic communication and finds it shallow and distracting. He constructs his arguments from his own observations, but he supports his positions with ideas from the likes of Emmanuel Kant and Soren Kierkegaard. He argues for the value of work that brings body and mind together. This is not, however, Alan Watts giving a "Buddha light" homily on watching your breath and tuning in to the senses. While he wants these parts of the self brought together, Crawford's vision comes from the more active pursuits of cooking, motor cycle racing, and pipe organ restoration - active physical pursuits that require training, experience, and active intelligence at work for visible, worldly results.

Crawford's first engaging arguments is one for what he calls the "attention commons," public spaces that must be left free from advertising for the sake of our independent minds. I worked at a college where I sometimes needed to get away to a quiet place to grade a stack of papers, and I had a favorite student study lab in another department where nobody knew me. I would work anonymously, facing a large, unbroken gray wall at the room's front. But imagine my dismay when one day I went for the calm lab and the cool, gray wall and found it had been repainted with the school mascot. Glorious red and gold. I hated it, and along with the soothing gray wall went the calm of my own mind as I sat and tried to work. The new mascot felt really intrusive! This is exactly the sort of distraction Crawford brings to our attention as he discusses going through airport security and finding that the bottom of the change bowl at the metal detector had been sold as advertising space to an insurance company. He notes that the security check experience is rattling enough without this added intrusion. He also notes that it is pretty hard (impossible?damn} to think independently or to think at all in an environment given over so completely to advertising and corporate interests.

Crawford's observations on the world of Vegas-style, corporation-run gambling are equally insightful, even if you feel the industry should remain relatively free of government constraints. He notes an interesting shift in terminology over the last few decades: "gambling" has become the "gaming industry." During the time of this word shift, casinos have also added daycare for your children. He introduces readers to the phrase "gambling to extinction," words to describe the gaming industry's goal of engineering all elements of a casino - physical layout, placement of cash-out booths, and machine design - to keep a gambler enthralled until he or she spends his last dime. The gambler's resulting tunnel-visioned, hypnotized self has a pretty low value, Crawford says, with a poor quality relationship to the world beyond the head.

But then again Crawford's views may not so far from those of the Buddha or Alan Watts as I thought. His stories of the chef relishing the mid-rush scramble in which he must draw on all of his training and his present-moment wits certainly reflects a living ideal of engagement. The author's description of motor cycle racing and the experience gained over time reveals an impressive mastery that only arises after years of work and enjoyment around bikes. His discussion of organ building and restoration gives a glimpse into another world of senses, finely tuned over time, in service of precise results to be presented to the world outside.

The World Outside Your Head can be a tough slog in spots. Look at Crawford's summary in the back or pick and choose chapters if you like. Expect insights that may rattle around in your own head and grow larger after you've closed the book. Expect some ideas you may have to finish out yourself. Alan Watts and the Buddha don't think the way Crawford does. They don't argue from the same sources as Crawford, and they don't have the same intellectual context - but somehow, I think they might approve.

A lot to think about here.
By William Annis
I'm going to be thinking about this book for a while, which in itself is a good thing, even if it is occasionally to argue with it.

Interviews with the author are easily found online, so I'm not going to go into what the books about in any detail, but instead make a few particular comments.

He places the crisis of attention not at the feet of technology (computers, phones) which is a very nice change for this sort of book. Unfortunately, some public discussions of the book elsewhere have taken it (possibly without reading much of it) and plastered their own technophobia onto it. This is not a Luddite, anti-technology book, but makes more subtle points.

The ending is still rather remote. I have no idea how most people, especially those at the lower ends of the economic system, are supposed to put some of the ideas into practice. His discussion of the boy in school convinced into studying trigonometry by relating it to building a race car is barely a start.

Still, it's very worth the read.

The Conflagration of the United States of America: A Zombie Novel (The Great Conflagration Series Book 1), by Patrick Hurd

It’s 1882, seventeen years since the end of the American Civil War. And while the country struggles to rebuild itself and come to terms with its history and possible future, a new conflict befalls the young government.

A sickness has begun consuming the country, causing those with the ailment to crave the flesh of the living.

Now Tallulah, a displaced Choctaw - having been taken from her tribe and sent to become “civilized” at the Carlisle Indian School – only desires to return to her people, getting as far as possible from this new poison spreading throughout the white man’s world.

But to accomplish this she must rely on the assistance and bear with the aggressions of others also desiring to find safe haven; including two former slaves who had already experienced the worst the country had to offer; overly aggressive Cavalrymen coming to terms with their own war demons; and a less than open-minded tugboat captain struggling to keep his two sons safe.

Each of them trying to survive the beginning of The Great Conflagration.

By Ragnorak5215
Although I appreciated Stephen Baxter's world building, the stories seemed a bit thin and rushed . I liked the first story about the Magmoids better than 'Project Herakles' but was disappointed to get more of an explanation about the creatures themselves and the aftermath of the events of the story.

From Booklist
Unlike many sequels, this one pretty much demands familiarity with its predecessor (Wolfhound Century, 2013). The story picks up soon after the end of the first installment. Vissarion Lom, a police detective in the author’s alternate version of Russia, is on the run with Maroussia Shaumian, who possesses the key to opening the Pollandore, a sort of self-contained universe that is breaking apart, threatening to seriously impact this world. Lavrentina Chazia, the head of the Mirgorod secret police (a fictional stand-in for Lavrenty Beria, head of the Russian secret police under Stalin), has her own maniacal plans for the Pollandore. Meanwhile, Josef Kantor, a power-hungry terrorist (and, it seems, Shaumian’s father), puts into play his scheme to gain control of Mirgorod. But a wild card, a fallen angel in a forest thousands of miles away, threatens to bring chaos. Higgins has created a compelling Stalin-era alternate Russia that is populated by sentient animals, fallen angels, and other fantastic elements; amid all that, Lom is a very traditional character, a world-weary cop trying to protect an innocent woman. An ambitious and fascinating novel, at least for those who have read Wolfhound Century. --David Pitt

Review
"Like vintage Mieville or Vandermeer, but with all the violent narrative thriller drive of Fleming at his edgiest. I fell into Wolfhound Century and devoured it in three days."―Richard Morgan

"An amazing, fast-paced story in a fantasy world poised dangerously on the edge of quantum probability, a world where angels war with reality"―Peter F. Hamilton on Wolfhound Century

"A dark new Soviet alternative history with angels...an alternate history that will grab you by the lapels and snap you to attention."―io9.com on Wolfhound Century

"A brilliant exploitation of the power of fantasy: the tender green soul of Russian history set free for uncanny battle with its grey, gunmetal carapace."―Francis Spufford on Wolfhound Century

"[Wolfhound Century] captures its world with absolute conviction. Mirgorod is a city of crumbling infrastructure and frightened people, but it is also a living, breathing, and very much vital place, that lives in its narrow streets and filthy river and in the overwhelming sense of cold that becomes more oppressive every time somebody shivers in daylight or huddles in a doorway for protections. There's brutality and heroism in equal portions."―SciFi Magazine on Wolfhound Century

"I absolutely loved Wolfhound Century. Higgins's world is truly original creation, Russian cosmos and Slavic mythology filtered through steampunk and le Carre. What really captured me was his beautiful style and language: his metaphors and associations flow smoothly like the waters of the Mir, and, like Lom without his angel stone, make you see the world in a new way."―Hannu Rajaniemi on Wolfhound Century

"A compelling Stalin-era alternate Russia ... An ambitious and fascinating novel."―Booklist on Truth and Fear

Better than Wolfhound Century?
By JPS
This book is the sequel of Wolfhound Century. Just like it, it is an intriguing novel that is a hybrid and a cross between a thriller/spy story set in a parallel world heavily inspired by the USSR, with bits of fantasy and magic (giants, a shape changer, a sort of vampire, unhuman beings and extra-terrestrial forces). A gruelling war opposing “the Vlast” (the novel’s version of the USSR) against “the Archipelago”, and which the Vlast is losing, in thrown in for good measure.

The war takes on an increasing importance as Mirgorod (the novel’s version of Saint Petersburg), founded some four hundred years in marshlands by the sea and where four rivers met, and is bombed by the aircraft of the Archipelago and besieged by its armies. The allusions to the long drawn out siege of Leningrad during World War II are rather unmistakable. So are the gruelling resistance of the city, spurred on by its entirely fanatical and totally ruthless commander in chief while all dignitaries of the Vlast have abandoned the capital and retreated to the East, similar to what happened when the German Army reached the outskirts of Moscow at the end of 1941. Another allegory, which is also carried over from the first volume, and which sits alongside the horrors of a totalitarian regime and of war, is the opposition between nature and the de-humanised and huge city with its bleakness and polluting heavy industries.

There is much more to this book than this, however, because it has a number of additional dimensions to it. One is a struggle between the huge and endless forest to the East of the Vlast and a fallen extra-terrestrial Archangel, who, unlike his peers who died when they feel from the skies, has survived for decades, is stranded on Earth and seeks to take control of the Vlast (at least to begin with!) to return to the stars. Mirroring this titanic struggle are a couple of others, with one quite rather awful Laurentina Chazia (the author’s version of Lavrenti Beria, the Head of Stalin’s NKVD, which is called VKBD in the book), Head of the State’s Secret Police, at the heart of it.

Again, the characterization is superb and this extends to the secondary characters with the author having a clear fondness for the destitute surviving aristocrats of the previous regime, before the Vlast came to power. The hero is still the secretive Investigator Vissarion Lom of the Secret Police and a mysterious young woman which has affinities with both the forest and the old regime. However, the heritages that both seem to carry and are rather unaware of (at least in the beginning) are not fully explained in this volume, with this being one of the hints that a third book could be expected (at least I certainly hope so!).

Again also, the author has a rare talent for creating specific atmospheres through vivid descriptions. For instance, the first few chapters paint a rather bleak picture of Mirgorod and mirror some of the ones found in the previous volume. Other powerful descriptions are the bombing of Mirgorod and the siege of the city and the suffering of its population and defenders, more generally, but also the description of the north-eastern part of Russia (East of Mourmansk) and of a secret and huge complex where unknown but essential researches are being carried far from anyone’s eyes.

Just like the first volume, this book is extremely rich in content and well-thought out. Unlike the first one, however, the ending is not entirely abrupt. While it may hint at a third upcoming volume, if only because a number of things remain unexplained, the author has this time taken the trouble to tie up loose ends. A well-deserved five stars.

A stellar follow-up to Wolfhound Century!
By MyBookishWays
Shortly after the events of Wolfhound Century, Vissarion Lom and Maroussia Shaumian are on a tram headed into Mirgorod, battle weary and all too aware that they’re being pursued by Commander Lavrentina Chazia, chief of the Mirgorod Secret Police. Mirgorod is on the verge of war with the Archipelago, and they don’t have a chance against their vast armies, but for Chazia, that means an opportunity to remake the Vlast just as she wants, pure and united under her. Her patience is waning, however, and she’s convinced the Pollandore holds the keys to her success. But Chazia doesn’t know how to use the Pollandore, and she thinks that Maroussia Shaumian does. Chazia isn’t the only one after Maroussia, though. Josef Kantor wants her dead, and he plans on remaking himself anew. He has grand plans for Mirgorod and his capacity for hard work is inexhaustible, his desire for utter supplication unending, if it is to meet his goals. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away from Mirgorod, there are diabolical machinations underway of apocalyptic proportions. In the forest, an Archangel is stirring, and it whispers to Josef Kantor, much to Chazia’s frustration, and she continues to use angel flesh on herself, in an attempt to connect to the ancient being, the only living angel, but every day, every minute, it drives her more and more insane.

I was blown away by Wolfhound Century, so does Truth and Fear measure up? Actually, it more than does, and as good as Wolfhound Century was, Truth and Fear is even better. Lom is a man whose only goal has become keeping Maroussia safe, and he’ll do that even at great, even grave, risk to himself. Luckily, he has an ally, in the form of a shapeshifter named Antoninu Florian who seems to have his own agenda, but proves more than useful in aiding the two fugitives. Maroussia is a young woman whose fate is entwined intimately with the Pollandore and believes it has the capacity to remake the Vlast into something good, not this burning mass of chaos and war that it currently is under the psychotic gaze of Chazia and Kantor.

When Maroussia is taken, Lom sets off with Florian to save her, and their harrowing journey will lead them to a glass city called Novaya Zima, and a violent, earth shattering conclusion that will change his destiny. In Truth and Fear, as in Wolfhound Century, Peter Higgins has created more than just a story. It’s an immersive and rich sensory experience, populated by giants, shapeshifters, earthy magic, and the power of ancient beings. Lom is a hero in the truest sense, in that he doesn’t see his actions as heroic, they just are, and they come as naturally to him as breathing. Prepare yourself for quite an ending, and the promise of more to come. The world-building is superb, and Higgins’s writing is, as usual, lyrical and sometimes brutal. I love this world, and I love these complicated, flawed, and utterly unique characters. I can’t wait to see what Peter Higgins gives us next.

Superior Fantasy
By R. Albin
The very good sequel to the author's Wolfhound Century. Higgins has created an original fantasy world drawing on Russian and Soviet history combined with elements of Russian mythology. The quality of writing is quite good, significantly above the usual level of fantasy novels. In this book, Higgins continues the thriller elements of Wolfhound Century while expanding the use of historical elements in combination with further articulation of the supernatural aspects of his fictional world. Significant parts of this book are inspired by the Soviet Gulag, the Soviet nuclear weapons program, and the Siege of Leningrad. The integration of historically inspired elements and the fantasy elements is ingenious.

As has become typical, Higgins is apparently aiming for a trilogy of novels. This is the middle book. Probably partly as a result of his intention to produce a trilogy, Higgins introduces some new characters and plot lines. While Higgins has not written "filler" pages and these sub-plots contribute to the articulation of his fictional world, the plotting is a bit "busy." There will be quite a bit to resolve in what is likely to be the final book. The likely final book should be interesting.

Moore's task: hunt down remnant weaponry platforms left by the brilliant, mad artificial intelligence known as Copernicus, the being ultimately responsible for the Solar System wide civil war. Yet Moore is about to uncover something far more sinister: before his destruction, Copernicus had established multiple mecha‑warrior defended bases with the intent of resuming the destruction of humanity. Worse, an a.i. presence even more dangerous, evil, and clever than Copernicus may have formed an alliance with something else out there with a similar goal: wipe humanity from the galaxy forever.

But those enemies will have to face a fully armed and equipped military task force led by a resolute general and his soldiers who know they are all that stand between human life, freedom, and progress—and the total annihilation of mankind.

Taylor's books and really enjoyed them all
By J. D. Aumann
I have read all of Mr. Taylor's books and really enjoyed them all, so I was excited to see this one come out. However, the slipshod way the story is told, the gaps in time and the lack of explanation around issues in the story make it hard to follow. The previous stories make little if any mention of the AI which took over the head of the Seperatists, yet now this is the main character and the story comes across as if this was something which should have been known all along.

It's very disappointing to see such a good story idea treated so poorly.

Shoulda stopped at One Good Soldier
By Josh
I loved the Tau Ceti trilogy and was very excited when I first heard that the series would be continuing. Sadly it felt like all the things I really enjoyed from the previous books were missing. I loved the solid dog fights and descriptions of ground combat in the other books but somehow this book while it did have some exciting parts, didn't really have those truly exciting fights. It feels like the technology was getting to the point where anyone could do anything now. I mean AEM suits can now do the puke and death blossom and their new QM abilities allow them to move virtually anywhere on the battlefield. Engineers figure out how to create shields that make the ships undetectable to sensor except for the fact they can still be scene with the naked eye and the same shields will bend missiles away from their ship or even turn lasers away. Why not just create AI controlled mecha, battle bots and clones to do the fighting... oh wait they do... It's like all the tactics and strategy the other books used and broke down for us just went out the window in this book. The closest we got to a tactical explanation is let's do the battle of the 300 in space and pincer the enemy using the secret goat path that equates to use just QM jumping in front and behind the enemy. That's pretty much how Alexander outlines their battle strategy. The 300 & the battle of Thermopylae on space... In the 2nd half of the book, it turns into more capital ship battles. I thought it would get better but think, Star Trek TOS type of battles with beam weapons that can just turn in space at right angles to make sure they don't miss. The mecha pilots are relegated to the background. I think more time about Diana Moore is written in sex scenes than she is piloting mecha. The characters we have come to know and love feel like they make choices that are out of character just to make sure the plot advances. Jack Bolan goes from Advanced ground recon to CAG to CAG running supply runs in his mecha to capital ship captain. Also sentences would be repeated multiple times in just a few pages. I lost count of how many times/variations of "Nancy could see why Dee liked the Seal" was used. By the time I finished this book I felt like it was all over the place, and I couldn't really decipher an intelligent reason for the main characters attacking a new enemy. We now trust Capernicus and take it on their word to attack another group because he says they are the enemy... These actions just don't fit the Alexander Moore we've followed through so many other stories and the supposed jumps in logic the characters make boggle my mind. I was seriously shocked that the book is a cliffhanger unlike all the other previous books.

Judge for yourself, especially if you already have read the first three books. While I hope the Mr. Taylor continues to write, I'm not sure if I'll be reading the next book in this series. Sadly I'm just not interested enough to see how things turn out... Though I definitely am open to reading something else he may put out in the future.

If you liked the first three books you should definitely read this fourth book in the series.
By Nobody Special
This is the fourth volume of a series I particularly enjoy. The story changes significantly with revelations that come in this new volume and this indicates that there is a good deal more to come taking the series in a new direction. Only fault I can find with this installment of the series is that the book ends in such a way that you know exactly where the next part of the story will pick up. It was still a thoroughly enjoyable read.
