Better Dystopia Trilogy - Problems Arise from Population Control
By Rachel Barnard
“No one’s good,” she says. “We’re all just different shades of bad.” – Destiny (Kindle Location 3153).

The Destroyer should be called the Invincible, because although he can’t manage to catch Benson or keep Harrison in captivity, he does manage to survive again and again, becoming more and more cyborg with each act of violence. Benson and Harrison Kelly, along with their friends will try to stop Pop Con for good, but in a race with the Lifers and their more violent methods, who will shut down the branch of government enforcing deaths first? And how many will die to accomplish this shutdown?

After reading David Estes’ Country Saga and Dweller Saga, I think the Slip Trilogy is far superior. I also think it is one of the best dystopian trilogies out there (and it’s one of my favorite genres so I’ve read a lot of them). The Slip trilogy is well written, highly interesting, focuses on the right parts of the plot and characters at the right times, will hold your attention throughout, and incorporates just the right amount of rebellion and uprising and government bullying.

Flip was a great ending to the trilogy, tying up all the loose ends with a satisfying finish. Everything makes sense in the bigger picture of the story and the smaller subplots between characters. For once I actually liked the epilogue Estes included for a year beyond all the main action.

I like how Estes communicates something positive through all his books, and the Slip Trilogy was no exception, “No one should have to feel like they’re not wanted, hated simply for being born. In the end, we’re all just humans, connected by things we can’t touch, like laughter and love and our fear of being left behind. Our fear of death. Of not being included in something we think is important and great but don’t really understand.” (Kindle Locations 4650-4652).

My only negative comment is disliking the plot element/helper introduced seemingly at random with Lola the dog. She was sprung on us for apparently no reason but was instrumental in moving the plot and accomplishing certain things plot wise.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

Before I started Flip I have to admit I was a bit hesitant I thought Grip was a great book, but it also had been a hard book and I knew this book was going to be dark as well and the characters would have to get through some more hardship before the ending. My expectations turned out to be right, but I didn't expect the ending to be so beautiful and maybe it was even better because of how hard the journey was to get there. It was totally worth it and I really enjoyed this book. It's the perfect ending to this trilogy and I think this is David his best series yet, although it's also dark and depressing at times, it's really well written and worth it in the end.

Flip mostly deals with the build-up to the event at the end of the book, there was a lot of anticipation and build-up, but the characters certainly don't sit still. This book aligned all the pieces in the right way, tied of the loose ends and showed us some great scenes along the way and then when the I got at the ending I just had to keep reading, because I had to know what would happen next and how would make it out alive. I am not going to spoil more, but I was really happy with the ending.

Beside the story there is also a lot of focus on the characters and interpersonal relationships, there are a lot of changes and it was amazing to see. We have Harrison and Benson who are mostly together in this book and they are getting used to being brothers and it's so amazing seeing them become a family and there's Janice, who might seem crazy, but she says the smartest things sometimes. And almost everything that came out of her mouth in this book was quote worthy and even though she seems weird, it's perfect and how she fits into it all. The Kelly family is one of the best things about this book and it's great seeing them together and trying to be a family even though everything that happened that tried to tear them apart.

Then there's Destiny, she still has a long way to go in this book after the aftermath of the previous books and I liked the characters development in this book. There are also some chapters from the characters who are still stuck with the lifers, although just enough to keep up to date with their plans and what's going on. I also came to like Minda and Simon even more in this book and we learn more about both of them, there's this interesting titbit of info about Simon's past that we learn, that really surprised me. And then there's Lola the Botdog, she might be one of my favourite characters in this book. That botdog is amazing and there's this quote towards the end of the book that applies to her that was so touching and spot on. I want a botdog! There are some scenes where she plays an important part and I liked reading about her.

This series is very consistent in the amount of world building provided in each book, every books ads a bit and even though this is the last book, there are still things added, things that get into place, pieces of the puzzle that we only get now. And then there's ofcourse the botdog which we haven't seen much about up till now. And the cyborg and how it ties into everything. So even in terms of world building this book added a lot.

To conclude: I really enjoyed this book, it was hard to read in a few parts, but I loved the ending, it was perfect! There's a lot that happens in this book and it was exacting seeing things line up for that final event that would decide everything. There is still a lot of character growth and change in this book and the characters are certainly one of the highlights of this book. In terms of world building some bits and pieces are added as well, making it complete. All in all a great ending to the trilogy!

"Don't cry because its over, smile because it happened." --Dr. Suess
By Jenny@ Juliababyjen's Reading Room
And that's exactly how I feel as I am now at the end of this fantastic story. The Kelly family's journey through this trilogy was just amazing, moving from one extreme to the other. Although I'm sad its over, I'm thrilled I got to experience it!

Flip was all I wanted and then some. Everything that was good about the first two books continues here in the finale. The stakes have been upped, and the read was even more intense, with even better action sequences. But Flip stays true to the basic story of a family trying to be together and free in a terrible world.

**I should mention now that there might be spoilers for Slip and Grip, but none for Flip. **

Things I love about Flip:

The Kelly Family-- My absolute favorite thing about this trilogy, from beginning to end has been the theme throughout about family. This is such an important theme, and one that is missing a lot in YA. My family is the most important thing in the world to me, and I'm sure is the same with most people. How great to see a series touching on this in such a relevant and realistic way. This family is not perfect. They love each other and drive each other crazy at times. But in the end, it is their loyalty to each other that makes all the difference.

"“Family doesn’t go one way. It goes every way. We help each other, we protect each other, and we die for each other, if that’s what it takes.”

The Characters-- I'm not going to touch on each one, as they are all really good in this book. I feel that any character development that was lacking in the previous books (especially the first one) all comes together here. These characters are all complex, with moments of both highs and lows. And all of the main characters had a complete story arc that made sense and fit into the story perfectly.

The World Building-- One of my absolute favorite things in any series is when the world building just builds and builds with each book. The world building in Flip jumps leaps and bounds from the first two books. We get to see a lot more of this crazy world, and most of it is done through the ads and articles in between each chapter. Like before, it really gives us an insight to the public's viewpoint, as most of our characters are in hiding and almost in the dark themselves. Just really brilliantly done.

Comedy Hour-- Despite this being a very dark, intense story, I was LOLing through a lot of it! I love the humor throughout, and think its a perfect balance with action and suspense. A few of my favorite lines:

"Eventually, Simon shifts his position, grunting lightly, and then says, “Nice makeover.”
“Are you hitting on me?” Harrison jokes.
“All I want is to be your frienemy,” Simon jokes back.
“I’m not ready for commitment,” Harrison says. “Too young for that. "

"Minda says, “Yeah. Just do what Janice does and you’ll be fine.”
“You want us to all wear tiger-striped dresses?” Harrison asks.
“Sure. So long as you laser your legs first,” Minda says."

The Twists-- Again, lots more of them happening in the finale! I'm not sure I've ever seen a twist written as well as the big one in Slip, but the ones in here I think have topped it! MIND BLOWN!

The Writing-- Loved it. Just beautiful writing. I'll give you a few examples:

"“Words can split logs and start fires and break stones, but they can also hug you and warm you and fight the wars you don’t have the strength to fight.”

"But then I realized that life is a gift that can’t be replaced. Life is the purpose. Life is always worth it, no matter how terrible you feel, no matter what mistakes you've made, or others have made. This world isn’t for running. It’s for standing. It’s for fighting."

Need I say more?

The Action-- I mentioned it before, but these were AWESOME action scenes! They went on for pages, were very detailed, and the pacing was perfect. Really made the pages fly!

The Ending--One of the best endings to a trilogy EVER. Everything tied together nicely, it all made sense, and we got a wonderful epilogue that tells us what's up with our favorite characters a year after the story. Really loved that!

Flip was an EPIC finale and I loved every minute of this book! After the last page, I was in a book fog, and it took me a bit to come back to the real world. These characters were just so real to me. Slip is one of the best trilogies I have ever read. I will be thinking about it for a long while.

And I'll leave you with another favorite quote:

"It’s not the power of the universe rallying against him, but humans. Just men and women full of hate and evil and ignorance. Nothing more, nothing less. And humans can be defeated, no matter the odds. In the end, good has a chance to prevail if those who wield its mighty sword do not lose hope."
