Vigilante Mine (Relek City) (Volume 1), by Cera Daniels

Internal Affairs be damned, Detective Amanda Werner's ditching protocol to hunt the vigilante whose bullet landed her on the bench. But this is no vendetta. Evidence suggests he's the zealot offing corrupt public officials--the same zealot who's promised to set the city ablaze by week's end--and she'll risk her career and her life to save her hometown. Too bad she can't find anything stronger than Kevlar to guard her heart against her primary suspect: a masked man with a telepathic German shepherd, unstable supernatural hearing, and lips that invite a whole different brand of investigation. All businessman Ryan McLelas, a.k.a. Klepto, wants is redemption. But even if Amanda could forgive his itchy trigger finger, Ryan still has to convince her that his alter ego's no serial killer. No small task, with syndicate-paid police officers turning up among the dead. He'd better keep his own syndicate ties close to his chest and Amanda even closer, because if Klepto is unmasked while he's hunting the real killer, their passionate affair could mark Amanda as the next dirty cop on the hit list.

About the Author
Cera Daniels writes paranormal, science fiction, and steampunk romance. Sometimes behind the same cover. Her heroes are broken, her worlds are crumbling, but the love her characters find amidst the chaos stands on an unshakable foundation. Cera lives in South Carolina with her husband, daughter, a cat who thinks he's a human, a cat who thinks she's a dog, and a lizard who thinks he's a cat. Unlike the animals in the Relek City series, none of Cera's pets appear to be telepathic.

Solidly written debut urban fantasy romance that you should really check out!
By Chris
4.5 out of 5 stars

I'll admit I was a bit hesitant to try a new to me author with an urban fantasy story. Vigilante Mine has some of my favorite elements to an urban fantasy; a dystopian-esque society, an urban fantasy setting, no real super powers more enhanced/genetically mutated powers, and a subtle romance. I was very surprised when I realized that the story had sucked me in completely and I didn't want to put it down.

Ryan McLelas and his brothers Jay, and Zach seemed to steal right into my mind and make me want to read more and more about all of them. I thoroughly enjoyed the semi-super hero powers that each of them had along with their Spirit Animals that helped enhance each of their abilities. I will say that the missing half star for Vigilante Mine is because there is a decided lack of backstory on the three McLelas men and their powers and also on Klepto that really needed to be there to fill out the story. That is one element of an urban fantasy or even a paranormal romance that I feel is a must, particularly in a first book in the series. I hope to see more of the backstory shared in Jay and Zach's books just to give that completeness to the stories.

I enjoyed the concept of the spirit animals and absolutely loved that the focus was on Romeo, who is Ryan's Spirit Animal. The interaction between Romeo and Ryan, and Romeo and Amanda had me laughing in quite a few spots, even with the seriousness they dealt with during the story. I also liked the interaction between Ryan and Amanda, and Klepto and Amanda.

Overall this was a good first book in a new series that will leave you wanting more. I for one can't wait to get my hands on the second book in the series when it's released. I highly recommend this one for fans of Jaye Well's Sabina Kane series, or Patricia Brigg's Alpha & Omega series.

Stave off boredom with this superhuman romp. Rejoice to an indie author.
By Katherine Cushman
As a fellow writer, I'm always so pleased when indie Author's launch us into a world of their own creation. More so pleased when the world is crafted in such detail as the one Cera Daniels envisioned for this novel. It's easy to find yourself lost in the atmosphere of scenes, and the characters are real. Raw. You struggle through their personal plights and feel the emotional anchor just as strongly as they do. I never thought I could feel that way for a story with metahuman themes, but here I am, genuinely impressed.

Well, I can't wait for her next novel. Just a really fabulous indie read. I would recommend it to anyone even vaguely interested in the genre.

Loved this type of paranormal
By Mignon Mykel
4.5 / 5 stars

When one thinks of 'paranormal romance', many readers are going to think in terms of vampires, and demons, and wolves, oh my. It's not very often that the whole mind-reading, supernatural thing comes across. Maya Banks does it well.

I'm very happy to say that Cera Daniels does it pretty darn well, too.

Right away from the beginning, you're thrown into Ryan's world of superior hearing. And the telepathy is done extremely well.

Cera does a great job of describing Klepto, and the brothers' roles in this superhero role they've taken on. I loved Ryan and his thoughts, and quite honestly, I loved his dog, too. He was very... Dug (Up!) to me. I just could hear Romeo speaking in that 'tone of voice'.

This series revolves around the McLelas brothers; we have Ryan with his extraordinary hearing, Jay with his superb eyesight, and Zach with his innate ability to just know. Each also has their own spirit guide -- and Romeo the German shepherd is Ryan's.

Real quick side note? In a world full of seriousness for these men, I have to say I rather enjoyed their moments of comedy -- you can get the sense that these men are brothers in the way they talk and joke with one another:

I loved Ryan's need for do-good in his city; equally, though, I loved that he allowed Amanda to do her thing, too, in her official capacity.

Ryan is every bit the alpha male that I love -- he's possessive and protective, the two 'p's I love to see in my lead males. On the same token, though, he does hold guilt and remorse when he accidentally shoots Amanda, and I think that helps round out his character. A few rounded edges for that rough exterior, ya know?

So Amanda, then. Here we have a super hard-headed woman; she has to be, she works in Internal Affairs. She's a strong minded woman in a man's world. She carries a gun as well as any other police officer, and when she's put on the bench due to being shot... Well, she's grumpy just as an police officer would be.

I loved watching her mindset fold. Yes, she keeps her beliefs for law intact, but she slowly begins to understand Ryan and his role in everything, and she learns to accept it. This little melding of safety personas was fun to watch and I can't wait to see glimpses of them in the future stories. Jay's next with VIGILANTE'S DARE.
