Looking for Lovecraftian Oddities? Search no Further.
By Ian
This collection is magnificent, and not just because it is complied by the Lovecraftian authority Mr. S. T. Joshi. Anyone can make a "best of" compilation of a famous author. It takes a true understanding of an author and his themes to make a great editor and curator of that author's work. S. T. Joshi is just that, and he proves it by choosing tales that drip Cosmic Horror, anguish, ennui, and madness.

Some are more traditionally horrific, squirming and writing monsters and all. In others, our own sentience is the foulest enemy we could ever imagine. To that latter note 'The Girl Between the Slats" had my chest in a knot. It purposefully starts weak and by the end pile-drives the reader with shocking sadness: excellent.

The amazingly named W. H. Pugmire delivers a tale lyrical, flowing, and haunting - much like the poetry that makes up the crux of it! I think I'm going to have to look into buying one of his short story collections!

Also I love the odd and twisted images peppered throughout the book. They are in no way illustrations of the stories. They are simply random images of strange and sometimes horrific faces, melting geometric shapes, houses breaking or reforming into something larger. They make no sense, and that's why they're perfect.

[Edit 8/8/14] I was completely wrong about the illustrations! They are very much related to each story. I simply didn't realize that fact initially due to their abstract and twisted nature. But as I was finishing one of the stories it became obvious to me that the elements in the image were clearly relevant to what I was reading. I then went back through the book and looked at all the illustrations and felt like a fill for not seeing it earlier! This has given me an even deeper appreciation of the book!

I've only read to Hannes Bok's 'Miranda's Tree' but I am hooked. I would recommend buying this just on the first 12 stories alone. But I have no doubt the rest will be just as gripping and dark as the ones before!

A Fantastic Anthology!!
By Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire, Esq.
Having grown a bit weary of working with writers who are dead, the ever-adventurous S. T. Joshi is now working with we, the "living," and has edited quite a few substantial anthologies: BLACK WINGS, THE MADNESS OF CTHULHU, A MOUNTAIN WALKED, and the book consider'd here, SEARCHERS AFTER HORROR.

Ice Fishing, by Donald Tyson

Although the title of the book is taken from the opening sentence of H. P. Lovecraft's "The Picture in the House" ("Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places."), S. T. has pointed out that this is not a Lovecraftian anthology. There are nods to the Mythos, as in Gary Fry's superb "The Reeds," where we find a reference to Yog-Sothoth; but this solid story is so original that one hesitates to label it "Lovecrafian." The Great Old Ones are also mentioned in "The Sculptures in the House," but the real delight for me in this wonderful story is that it discusses the weird work in stone by Clark Ashton Smith. The theme of the book is the motif of the "weird place," those haunts that are touched by Outside influences. One superb aspect of the book is that no one story is like another--they are all unique and keenly effective. We can almost smell the aged bones in Nancy Kilpatrick's queer, atmospheric tale; and Jason V Brock's story, so modern in tone, is expertly plotted and mesmerizing. I think my favourite story in the book is the beautifully written "The Beautiful Fog Ascending." Strantzas writes so well, with prose that is precise and effective; and he conjures such an eerie atmosphere that one feels haunted by the story after having devour'd it. Richard Gavin gives us an abandoned site that is at first unnerving, and then diabolic; and his story does what all excellent horror fiction should--it gives ye the creeps. "Miranda's Tree" is a newly-discovered unpublished story by weird artist, Hannes Bok. And it is always fascinating to see one of the top weird poets, the remarkable Ann K. Schwader, dip her pen into ye pond of prose--and "Dark Equinox" is as excellent as it is spellbinding. There is not a poor story in the book, and each is graced by an interior illustration by Rodger Gerberding, and the wonderful jacket art is by Richard Corben. The book is handsomely produced, as are all Fedogan & Bremer books, and sturdy in construction. It is fabulous to see this renown publisher, who has filled the void left by the inactivity of Arkham House, return with new titles. Long may they wave!

Terrifying
By Emmett Hoops
This is not a collection of the year's best; not a collection of Lovecraftiana; not monster stories with a fantasy edge. It is a collection of stories that share an author's well-developed sense of setting, and the authors' using that setting to develop a gradual buildup of
king-size shivers.

At Lorn Hall, by Ramsey Cambpell, really gets this collection into the stratosphere. Followed by truly creepy stories The Reeds....Exit Through the Gift Shop...

Rarely is it so perfect a collection that your attention is drawn to the anthologist. Here, S.T.Joshi has done a prize-worthy job of defining a new sort of collection and executing it with exquisite care. And kudos to that great publishing company, Fedogan & Bremer, for the care with which this book is printed and bound.
