***This is a short story***
Sometimes it takes more than strength and training to complete a mission, sometimes it takes heart.
For twelve years Ehtishem Mahle has crisscrossed the post-invasion ruins of the Pacific Northwest, searching for Rachel Pryne, the missing, adult daughter of his friends Joe and Ellie. Twelve years spent sleeping on dirt, bathing in frigid rivers, and living off the land. But he’s an Ohnenrai soldier—a walking weapon—and he’s endured far worse on other planets in the name of duty. Yet a chance encounter with a young Terran refuge will have Ehtishem questioning whether or not he can protect a single child, let alone find and safeguard the woman who’s DNA holds the key to saving not only Ehtishem’s people, but every living species on Earth and beyond.
The Glass and Iron series contains adult themes, graphic violence, strong language, and sexual content.

This series just keeps getting better!!!
By Charmond
This is a short story told from Ehtishem’s perspective before the events of Girl Under Glass take place (there is also a short from Rachel’s pov that takes place before GUG called A Sad Jar of Atoms that is definitely worth reading).
I always look forward to Monica Pierce’s books because she has such a fantastic way of pulling you into her stories from the first page. She has a way of writing characters that are so full of “realness” that is almost impossible to find today. No, her characters are not the superficial, barely have any real thoughts and emotions type of heroes/heroines that you find in a lot of the stories out there. Her characters are full of depth and passion and have this fierce quality to them.
Girl Under Glass was the first book I read of Ms. Pierce’s (I found it on a friend’s Kindle and decided to give it a read because the description sounded rather fascinating and different) and I fell in love with Rachel and Ehtishem’s story. Ever since Ms. Pierce announced that she was writing a story from Ehtishem’s pov, I’ve been anxiously awaiting its arrival (I totally stalk her facebook page) . And let me tell you, I was not disappointed! Even though it’s a short story (not even 50 pages), it gives you a wonderful glimpse into Ehtishem’s true character and also a bit of who has (regrettably) been. It leaves you wanting to know more about the mysterious Rachel and what will happen when he finds her, seeing as how his species are pretty much hated everywhere for the destruction they've cause and are still continuing to rain down on Terra (or as we call it Earth).
I would definitely recommend this book [and series] especially to those who enjoy sci-fi, dystopian type novels. So go read it!!! :)

I saw Etishem's humanity--and he's not human...
By TeeKay
I don't think I have the words... Monica Pierce is one of my go-to authors when I'm looking for a story that I know will suck me in feet first. Her writing is simply incredible. Her stories are compelling.
Rust and Ruin is a prequel to her novel, Girl Under Glass. Told from Etishem's POV (the male main character of the series), so much insight into his character is shared. I love that I saw Etishem's humanity--and he's not human. :-)
I'll likely reread Girl Under Glass after having read Rust and Ruin, and a Sad jar of Atoms (Rachel-the female main character's story.)
This prequel is short. I bought it for my Kindle, walked outside and sat on the front porch, and read it in one sitting--I raced through it. I couldn't put it down.
Bravo, Monica Pierce, on another great story!

Now to read the rest of the story....
By W. Swardstrom
Rust and Ruin is my first introduction to Monica Enderle Piece's writing, and so obviously to her Glass and Iron series. As a short story, it can stand alone, but it's clear there is much more to this story.
We get this story from the point of view of Ehtishem Mahle, one of the conqueror's of Earth, but he isn't the being he once was. He is a warrior, but an honorable one -- one with a purpose, a mission. I enjoyed this story, as a dystopian example of what could happen in the remnants of earth after an alien invasion. The population turns almost feral in many ways, and Pierce isn't afraid to show that violence in her writing. Not overly graphic, but exact and precise in it's purpose.
Well done -- you've made me want to read the rest of the series it's based on.
