BEFORE YOU BUY...
The story of The Archon's Assassin has now been rewritten and included in book 2 of Legends of the Nameless Dwarf: Geas of the Black Axe. The original Shader version is here available as a matter of historical interest, and due to requests from fans of the Shader series.
All the Shader and Rhiannon scenes have been removed from the version in Geas of the Black Axe, and it is now my intention that the Shader series ends with The Unweaving.
I began work The Archon's Assassin in 2010, but shelved it after 70,000 words due to restructuring the first three Shader books, and then being committed to completing the five books of the Nameless Dwarf series.
When I came back to Archon's, things had changed. A lot. Not only had I grown as a writer, but the characters had also grown, and their stories had moved in directions I could never have anticipated in 2010.
When I began revising the first 70,000 words, I soon gave up, and instead, wrote the first nine chapters from scratch, and then just kept on going. More than any of the earlier books, Archon's has been a joy to write (well, sometimes it was draining, especially when the characters get to Verusia...)
I've endeavored to write this book in a way that allows people new to the Shader series to jump in at this point, if they so wish. The Archon's Assassin begins a new story arc that takes place four years after the events of Shader book 3: The Unweaving.
Because this is the start of a fresh new trilogy, there's no reason not to start here. There are relationship and character issues that carry over from the first three books, but it is easy to trace what has gone before from the dialogue and interactions.
My hope is that new readers will find a quick and secure footing in the world of the Shader series, and those who have read the first three books will have the satisfaction of returning to old and familiar characters, who are plunged into deeper and darker challenges, and a story arc that will make life-changing demands on each of them.
I've included a glossary of names and terms to help refresh readers' memories, and to assist new readers with the nomenclature and background of the world, should the need arise.
My greatest hope is that you will find this a work that is first and foremost entertaining (by which I mean exciting, horrific, funny, sad -- the whole gamut of emotions you should expect from fantasy fiction).
I have been blessed to receive hundreds of messages via email and social media from fans of the series, many of which have offered invaluable feedback. With the changes I have been making to book 1, you'll see I've been listening; and with The Archon's Assassin, the feedback has really helped to shape what I think is my best novel to date (certainly, it's my favorite).
Fans of the Nameless Dwarf will find a big dose of Nameless here (not all of it easy). Shader fans may be in for a bit of a surprise, both at the beginning, and toward the end. Rhiannon fans are in for a rough ride, but she's definitely making waves. But most of all, this is a book for fans of Shadrak the Unseen, the diminutive albino assassin with a fledgling conscience in the form of his long-dead foster mother.

An absolute masterpiece

For me there has only ever been one author to dominate this genre, and that is JRRTolkien. I dipped into a few other authors but against the towering might of the Lord of the Rings, no one has ever even come close, until now.
DP Prior has produced another masterpiece, every bit as exciting, relentless, terrifying and hilarious as the Nameless Dwarf Chronicles, and in my humble opinion puts him on a par with the great Tolkien.
Where Tolkien weaves tales of middle Earth, Prior has created an Earth come to pass. This world or worlds that he is building is infused with hints about what happened to the world we know to create the ones where our heroes live.
There is great darkness in this novel, truly the stuff of nightmares and the evil the antagonist shows is terrifying. So too the courage and trials of our heroes, each with their flaws, making them all the more likeable and easier to understand. The pain and anguish they experience at the loss of their comrades is heart wrenching.
I haven't read books 1-3, I was actually saving them, and then I got a mail from Mr Prior asking me to read and review his latest novel. This was an offer I couldn't turn down, especially when he told me this was a new and standalone story arc. Still, I can't wait to read the first trilogy.
If you like this genre, dive in. Here, the first Shader trilogy or the Nameless Dwarf Chronicles. You cannot and will not be disappointed. Absolutely shogging spectacular.
I look forward to many more novels by this remarkably talented and highly imaginative author.

Shadrak has to stay virtually invisible as he is an albino, small person, who is hugely noticeable. Who knows when one of his knives will have your name on it? Even the Archon?
> Albert the Poisoner: aka The Fat Man: If Hannibal Lecter was a chemist and not violent, he would be Albert. Both like to cook and eat epicurean food, as well as live a lavish and worldly lifestyle. Even though Rhiannon may be used in place of Shader in some whacky schemes, it is clear that one warped plan of that "Big-eared, bald guy", has delivered results successfully and will continue to deliver well into the future.
> Nameless, Nameless the Dwarf: Ancient Destroyer of the Dwarves due to finding and touching a cursed black, double-bladed axe. The few remaining dwarves use magic to remove his name and lineage, as well as permanently seal a scarolite helm on his head, until the curse of the black axe can be broken. Known for drinking and singing dirty limericks and tavern ditties when he gets in his blue moods, Nameless is thousands of years old, has a luxurious beard, travels by a small single sailboat and can kick the butts of soldiers and Undead like Chuck Norris.
All four books are worth reading in order, though it's not necessary. The richness that you do gain by reading the Shader Quartet from start to finish is best described this way:
Shader 4 can provide a great thumping read, with well dressed, Undead, action, adventure, and the shortest overall cast outside of a kid's book.
'The Shader Quartet' takes teenagers, schemers, megalomaniacs, religions, God's, magic, evil, the Endless Undead, lands of dream, a Technochrat, many myopic schemes, an Abyss, and weaves them together with myths, stories, adventures, murder, religion and future prognostication into a four book series that is so great, it will make Derek Prior a household name for fantasy readers for decades to come.
Recommendation: If you appreciate intelligent writing with extensive vocabulary, imaginative fantasy, historically-based horror and the best, dead-panned, ironic writing regarding the Undead I've seen in years, then read THE SHADER QUARTET. The only downside to reading something as fine as Shader #4, as compared to the majority of other dreck-based novels that exist in the world today, I am intensely conscious of every second that I spend reading substandard materials until I find another singular achievement like Shader #4.
I would give all four of the Shader books six stars if I could.

"The Archon's Assassin" is a fantasy/quasi-horror adventure book in the 'Shader' series by author, Derek Prior.
This Kindle e-book was approximately 482 printed pages and sold for $5.95 at time of writing this review.

General Theme (minor spoilers)
The time of 'the unweaving' is 4 year past but new threats appear on the horizon.
This novel details the eventual coming together of Shader, Shadrak the Unseen, Nameless the Dwarf, Rhiannon and a few others as they strived to find several artifacts that will help ultimately destroy some of the evil forces that plague the world.
Some thoughts on "The Archon's Assassin"...
1.) superbly written and edited.
2.) an accomplished sense of pace and timing. No prolonged periods of inaction and no fill.
3.) a diverse group of characters as your ever likely to meet in a fantasy adventure. All are well developed, giving them personalities you can either empathize with of maybe love to hate. The character depth was exceptional in this book... the reader gets to see some inner fears, desires and demons that boil precariously near the surface in some of our heroes.
4.) several great encounters and battles. My three favorite scenes were...
a.) the Fire Giant
b.) Thelca
c.) the last dungeon sequence with Ludo, Otto and Shadrak.
5.) a sprinkling of subtle humor throughout.
6.) while this tale is not simply out and out horror, it does have its moments. There are a few scenes that will make your skin crawl or maybe even make you cringe in revulsion
7.) maps... to help the reader with a sense of direction, distance and topography. Maps -- the icing on the cake for any novel that involves travel or different locales. The ultimate gift for any reader who likes to become truly engrossed in a book.
8.) Glossary... it has a list of character names and places, helping to explain some connections between the players and the locales encountered. Also very useful as a refresher for those of us whose memory have slipped a tad with the time taken between books... lol.
Impressions:
Derek Prior is maybe one of the best fantasy/horror writers of this generation. His environments and settings generate a realistic scenario, permeated with a sense of foreboding and oft times, gloom and doom. His dialogues between characters are meaningful and the 'asides' he uses to indicate what his people are really thinking, often differ greatly from what's coming out of their mouths.
I've followed Derek's writing since his early works; this may be his best effort to date.
I read a lot of fantasy/horror writing and because of this I'm able to compare the attributes of different authors... Derek has that natural and accomplished story-telling skill that simply hits you as soon as your into the first chapter. This is, simply put, writing that is a cut above.
